- evilesttoast, on 10/12/2007, -3/+89Yeah...but...Doom!
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -0/+69What? An airline is stepping up that won't suck off the government teet funded by my tax dollars?! What a disgrace to capitalism!
[/sarcasm] - SickFinga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+47Imagine, LAN party on a plane. Those 6 hour flights might become a fun thing to do.
- jermm, on 10/12/2007, -2/+35Counter-Strike on a plane:
"DEFUSE THE ***** BOMB"
Next stop... - RichPowers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29Here's a Slate article talking about how ***** stupid the FAA regulations are regarding foreign ownership of domestic airlines. Basically these regulations were created in the 1930s and haven't been updated to match the times. God forbid if the legacy airlines have to face more competition from competent airlines :/
http://www.slate.com/id/2156777/ - chazcross, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Looked like Doom was having frame rate issues.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27That video needs more doom music.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -17/+34Must be running on a PS3.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15Probably running on some 400 MHz value/embedded processor. Even so, Doom ran on my 386-40 MHz so WTF.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Looks like a cool idea. If any of the U.S. flagged carriers tried this, it wouldn't be free in economy class, they would charge $1.99 per 15 minute segment, and have a library of about 100 mp3s. Then complain about all the money they lost and declare "the people don't want entertainment on their flights" after it fails due to non use.
- rm999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Too bad it runs at 10 frames per second. I think my phone can run it faster than that...
- dmsean, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Who cares about business practices, they run teh linuxes!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why did it appear to be lagging? It didn't look like it was the camera causing it.
- noreturn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12JDawg, I don't know if you realize it, but American-owned airlines are the laughing stock of the world. The service is terrible, the prices are exhorbitant, and most Americans that haven't flown on other airlines are just bending over and taking it up the ass. The Airline market NEEDS a real competitor and a real open market. If that means the demise of some of the world's ***** service, then so much the better for you, the consumer.
- inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12@Gir53457 - You are right! The cost of air sick bags alone will put them under...
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Unless you're attached to the wing or you frequently bring your zorb onto the airplane, I don't know how it is you're getting motion sickness.
Save for turbulence, I doubt there's many ways to get motion sickness.
Unless you have mad vertigo and had the balls to order a window seat. - inigomntoya, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12I should have flown while I was still a virgin. Sounds like they have more fun...
- omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"This airline, if allowed to fly here, would grealt (sic) impact the recovering airline industry."
Good! Half of them shouldn't be in business anyway. - wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Looks like virgin skimped on the processors. This is very strange because virgins never skimp on processors.
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7They should have multiplayer poker, that would be a nice use for that credit card reader...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Here's the VA site containing a petition to allow them to fly in the US.
http://www.letvafly.com/ - gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Thank God I'm not the only one who saw that.
- Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Looking at the video we see that their systems are powerful enough to playback video but can't play doom properly? Somethings wrong with the settings.
- zombiedog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Ah, but there is USB, and Ethernet, and AC power jacks at every seat. You will have some functionality to use your own toys with the Red system, with more in the future as airborne internet becomes more cost effective and gets better bandwidth.
Up front we have all our charts and manuals on a touch screen tablet PC called an electronic flight bag, so for me it means no more 50 pound chart case and endless tree killing manual updates. The plane is also very fuel efficient and is fly by wire computer controlled. Not to worry, there are 7 computers running the flight controls, 3 types with 3 different OS's, none Windows. And yes, the front end and the cabin are on different systems.
I'm looking forward to driving you guys around in this fine ride. Thanks for your support and visit www.letvafly.com - drizek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I can play Doom on my mp3 player FFS and it doesnt lag.
- heynow21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5This is a terrible idea. What if a citizen of Boston is on the plane and mistakes one of the guns or monsters on the screen as the real thing? Panic will ensue and the plane will crash, that's what.
- tylerni7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Seriously... my iPod runs Doom faster.
Still though, if they get that and other games running faster it would be awesome. - talman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ridiculous for the government to be helping a corporate entity from rightfully dying. Sure you want the best pilots, but doesn't make sense if a business can't afford them.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Old school warcraft would be fun to play on these things. Maybe some simple games that would be easy for anyone. Like multiplayer scrabble, chess, checkers, backgammon.. I think you get what I mean.
- wisebob134, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4The problem is if you watch Aqua teen Hunger Force on it Someone might think you have a bomb
- rodrigo74, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Some PopCap games too
- iamafatguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Neat, idea, but touchscreen? Not only will you have to contend with the dolt kicking your seat and hammering the tray back into it's upright position every 10 seconds, but now, we'll all get to enjoy the ham fisted pounding & fingermashing being transferred through the seat to the back of our heads. People won't be using this thing as gently as that guy in the demo.
- NealV, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, because they decided to network the user-accessible computers to the avionics of the airplane. There would be no reason to connect the airplane's computers to this entertainment system. You could no more hack the plane from your seat, than you can from your mother's basement ;-)
- aserer511, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Beautiful. Eons and ages above jetblue's, but jetblue will probably rollout touch screen systems with similar functionality soon, really a great system
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The thing that may have interested me the most about this was the statement that they're going to be asking Linux game developers to develop for their platform. As rarely as I fly, games on a plane aren't a big deal to me. If the airline and their plans take off, it could help improve the gaming situation on Linux as a whole by expanding the market and the profitability of Linux games. After all, if you've already made a Linux-compatible version of your game for the airline, why not sell a version for home PCs?
- BloodShed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well this gives a new meaning to deathmatch on the fly ^_^
- JRPereira, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That's pretty amazing - not doom I mean, but the various menus and everything looking great and being functional, and running on Linux which is just icing on the cake. The video and food ordering is top notch, and I like how the video is still visible while performing other tasks.
- SirBryce, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All I want is free on-flight food and beverages (save alcohol) and decent looking flight attendants. Is that too much to ask? I already have a freakin' laptop. If I'm going to shovel a bucketload of money out my ass to fly across the country, all I want is nice service, I can bring my own entertainment. Bring me a steak.
- Yage2006, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Doom was lagging like crazy . I have played doom 2 on a 486 dx2 with 64meg of ram back in the day and it performed way better then that, No lag and a good fps. Dunno what they have for hardware but it must be really cheap crap .
- Cimlite, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think most of you guys are getting carried away with this.
The main feature of the system is the video playback and ordering stuff. Games like Doom is just a side-effect to the whole thing being linux based.
What would be REALLY cool though was if they added an internet browser to the system and added accelerometers in the remotes so you could move a cursor. Of course some heavy filtering on what sites you could get to... - ariza, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4DOOM will not last on these flights, if it ever happens. Some mom flying with her 5 yr old will complain about a teen sitting next to them shooting it up on DOOM the entire flight.
this is just a shady way to get the DIGG community to support this airline.
oh and the banner ad for Virgin America at the top of this Digg page is just going to far. Its some Altoid ad now but it was VA earlier today. http://www.letvafly.com/
sick. I hope digg made good money from this - 955701, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I want to see a port of a video game whose main plot is hijacking airplanes and crashing them. Then I'm hoping for a followup news release about someone hacking the video on all of the sets and feeding them all video of a pilot (presumably theirs) announcing that the plane has been hijacked and being routed to Iraq. Then I want some taco bell and a dachshund.
That would be a killer day! - RickySan65, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Problem 1. Air Plane = Motion Sickness
Problem 2. FPS = Motion Sickness"
Your in a plane, use the barfbags! - MrFlesh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The government isn't helping the airlines by making it an excruciating violation of every fliers privacy rights. Which s just a pony show anyway......what good does it do to screen the flights but not patrol the border or not inspect 99% of the cargo that comes into the country? I'll tell you what it's good for.........keeping Americans afraid. That aside if a Airline offered at least quality games that I could play against other players on a plane It would become my preffered airline. I played some soccer star from south america at lumines on one flight and that was pretty cool.
- DeFex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i think they are VIA CPUs which are pretty weak.but on the plus side the explosions in the earphones will mask the screaming brat behind you. and bits falling off the plane.
- ImSoFnAwesom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@JDawg2007
your an idiot... i fly all the time, and i would LOVE To fly virgin, US Airlines are TERRIBLE,
terrible food, terrible service, and you want to force a company, who actually has GOOD Service, to shut down?
you obviously never fly, or your just a complete idiot..
im going with the latter. - spinb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually fly Virgin Atlantic whenever I travel to the UK. This technology is already available on their air crafts and I have to say it makes a 11 hour flight so much more bearable. I've flown many different airlines and in fact used to be a huge American Airlines fan but I had to take Virgin on a return trip from London to California one time and I will never fly another airline again. It would be excellent if they were able to offer US only flights. I do not know about their wage practices for their employees and I don't think that it really is that much of a concern as the service is always exceptional.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why did it appear to be lagging? It didn't look like it was the camera causing it."
I'm sure that it's still a beta version and there's bugs they need to work out. This kind of project is not one that you want to mess up so I'm sure they will make it good when it's all done. - toppgun, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2al gore hates you and so does the enviroment
- neverwalkalone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Music library, chat, ethernet, a hot foot button, but will it blend?
