Five reasons to own a PSP
destructoid.com — Sure -- the Nintendo DS is leagues better than the PSP. But what about us poor schmucks who bought one at launch? Turns out there's lots of reasons why we should be happy we sold our kidneys to buy a PSP, and the best might actually be yet to come.

- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Those reasons are kinda wiik and not very clear, here is a better version.
1. With homebrew you can play any PSX game ever made running at perfect speed, thats thousands of games.
2. Older Emulators, you can play NES, SNES, SEGA, GBC, GBA, even Apple 2e. Oregon Trail on the go? yes.
3. If you wanna take a break from gaming, you can listen to some mp3's, or some photos you have uploaded.
4. Wifi internet browsing, whether bored at a friends, at a coffee shop, or stuck at an airport, you are ready.
5. Porn on the go, although mentioned in the article it really deserves a spot. You can take the day off to J off anywhere in the world, if there is a road to world peace this is the first step.- Puffball, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I don't know about Itazura, but I'm too wiik to stop myself from using a wii pun in a PSP thread! But also, its shame the first one voids the warranty. But the other four are A-OK with me! ;)
- Buddhist, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2#1: The games.
#2: The Capcom.
#3: The homebrew.
#4. The future.
#5. The porn. - z00k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Seriously though... I am PERFECTLY fine with my GP2X.
That's why I bought one for me and my friend... and at a great price too! Only problem I have at all is the fact that the place that I bought them from was shut down ... due to Sony.
R.I.P Lik-Sang. - Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@puffball
The first one does not void out the warranty, it works almost near identical to the homebrew emulators and iso programs. I am currently playing Vagrant Story and at anytime I can go back to a perfect original firmware of 1.5, there is no hardware neccasary.
- skate3214, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Voids the warranty? How exactly is Sony going to find out, considering if your going to send your PSP back to them for repairs etc.. that you wouldn't send them your memory stick with it. And I'm pretty sure if your returning it to target or something that there not going to go "Oh you used PSX games on this, sorry no warranty for you!"
- Brocclibob, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Theres always the dumb person who will forget to take their memory stick out.
- Sabin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Umm.....to play PSX games on your psp without getting them from sony you need to install a custom firmware which sony will easily know you have done. You can take out your memory stick all you like, the firmware is....well on the internal firmware.
- joshman5k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It voids the warranty when you downgrade your PSP.
And they know you downgraded it because of your serial. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can you switch back to Sony Firmwares from the custom ones?
Just in case...
- DarkEnder, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3I have a friend who also bought his PSP at launch, like the author of the article. Cept he only uses it for porn.
- italianandproud, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5i could never figure out why the DS was "leagues ahead" in the first place besides the price
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9hmm........maybe it's the wide array of much better games
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5indeed... better games, touch screen, pricing, etc.
But IMO I'd rather spend bucks on the PSP because it's an overall better system. It's like a cross between a video ipod on crack and your computer. It just needs better games. - incabulos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1@ m3mn0n
Better games? That's like saying the PSX, NES, SNES, SEGA, GBC, and GBA aren't quite good enough. I suppose at least we could take the time to appreciate a few of the PSX games that just aren't quite up to DS par like... FFVII, FFVIII, Resident Evil, Grand Turismo, MGS, Castlevania SotN, Syphon Filter, Destruction Derby, Tekken, Twisted Metal, Driver, Ridge Racer, Grand Theft Auto, Street Fighter (Alpha?), Grandia, Parappa, Final Fantasy Tactics, Madden, Lunar, Wipeout, Crash Bandicoot, Soul Reaver... just to name a few. Nah... PSP has no good games. Definitely not worth it. *cough* *cough* /sarcasm =)
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Seriously though, as soon as I read that 'backed-up' PSX games were playable, I've been playing with my PSP ever since.
Maybe its cause I missed out on the PS1, and been trying to catch up on the games I've missed. ;P - zyle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I've made bad investments, and I've made bad investments. And I've invested in the PSP.
- Lkr721993, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2The PSP is a horrible system, and DS has better games. The only time I use my PSP is if I DESPERATELY need internet and I'm not near a computer or I wanna play Super Mario on the go.
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So... you have a PSP, but you consider it a horrible system?
Wow.
the PSP isnt only a gaming machine.
I use mine for 90% Movies, 5% Homebrew Tetris, 5% Games. - CharlesDWard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's where this lovely thing known as "Difference of opinion" comes into play. I have both a PSP and a DS, however it is my DS that is sitting in my closet gathering dust, because I realized that I could do so much more things with my PSP such as surf the internet or watch movies when I don't want to play games or listen to music, and thus I have more fun with it because of it's plethora of options. Sure, the DS has a touch screen which is a good idea in theory.. but most of the games I did enjoy had taken part of the fun of a touch screen away by having one of the screens a map or inventory window only(As with Castlevania and Metroid) which is a poor use for two screens.
Also, if you think the DS has better games, shouldn't you at least mention a few, otherwise it's a fairly weak argument. You should have things to support your argument, not just "Well I don't like it, therefore.. it's trash".
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So... you have a PSP, but you consider it a horrible system?
- unixer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4mmm.... I wonder who owns the domain
hem.... hem... http://www.alliwantforxmasisapsp.com - bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I have had my PSP for awhile and I don't know why people bash it...sure the DS is great but if you are willing to drop that extra cash the PSP is the way to go. I have the most recent custom firmware which allows TONS of PSX games to be played. Its main format is MP4 which also works with any iPod video. I can also add PMP support to my PSP which has really nice quality. The list can go on.
Only thing though is that the multi player doesn't seem as much fun as it is on the DS. They were able to pull it off with the shooters (Socom mainly). Also the battery has never been an issue with me. It has lasted a good while and it does not need recharging every five seconds *points at his iPod mini - h4mx0r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I got mines at launch. Still 100% pure 1.50 firmware.
Alas, I could never be convinced to use a DS more than a PSP. Never got use to the games (the ones that needed the stylus like metroid) and flat buttons.
But if I ever get my hands on a SD Gundam G Generation DS, I'll be happy to buy a DS at full retail price.
Anyways, these are all valid reasons to support the PSP, especially emulators and homebrew. I wonder why Sony tries so hard to destroy their own product : / - usefulidiot, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2As a gamer, you owe it to yourself to get a psp. Now with the advent of full speed psx emulation, no other device can compare to the wide array of games the psp is capable of playing. If my PSP was stolen, i would DEFINATLY buy a new one. 3.02-OE-B Rocks. (BTW Yes im bad, i downloaded a 16GB torrent of roms, and i downloaded the 45GB psp iso torrent, now to find all those psx iso's...)
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Wait a minute,
PSX ISOs mean like PS1 or PS2?
Im confused, please help.
The PSX was a PS2 w/ media center, released in japan, right?
It was also a codename for the PS, right?
thanks - incabulos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@foolfromhell
I am pretty sure he's talking about the PS1 when he says "psx".
