- tpimental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Please read the article... the title of this Digg is misleading. The author is saying while Thompson makes some decent points, he's still a moron.
- danhuard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3+digg for a fairly well-written column and with every point there's a counterpoint, as it should be.
- joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem I have with his logic is this:
His presumption is that a given person, given a gun, and a copy of GTAIII, will, after playing the game, go shoot someone.
And his solution? Get rid of the game, as the gun certainly had nothing to do with it. - Superfluous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Good article. You have to love when people bring in facts and rationality. I love how he points out why everyone hates him, it isnt that he is so much wrong as he is approaching the situation so horribly that it is earning him contempt rather than recognition. Also, i for one plan on not lodging my revolution controller up my ass.
- billizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't go as far as to say Jack Thompson is right...
- thedonnybrook, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Thompson makes a point, that doesn't mean he is right. So far, two federal appeals courts have found that video games fall within the protections of the First Amendment. What Thompson is talking about is a direct affront to one of our fundamental Constitutional rights. Does that mean that the Supreme Court will agree with the Appeals Courts? No, but the point remains. This is a new medium consisting of expressive content, and it should, to some degree, have First Amendment protection. As a result, people should stop blaming their problems on others and take responsibility for their actions.
- dignan2681, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great article. Well thought out and researched. Very rare in this day and age.
- slapout, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The title of the article on the linked site is
"Five Reasons Why Jack Thompson is Right ...and Five Reasons Why He's Not"
The digg title if just listing the name of the article (and leaving off the sub title). - Blhnex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Jack Thompson is an idiot. His proposal to create a video game where vid game execs are murdered completely undermines him. If he's so against violence why would he create a violent video game."
I don't think he actually wanted a video game where you killed video game execs. As in the article I think he was trying to make a point to say "How would you feel if there was a game based on someone killing someone that has the same job as you". I'm not saying I agree with him because I don't, I'm just saying if I was a cop and there was game to kill cops I'm pretty sure I'd be pretty upset about it.
Any who great article and very well thought out - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2"Ok..first off. Change the damn title of this ***** Link. Read the article. It is a good article. It presents a balanced argument, but the article does contain reasons why Jack thompson is wrong. This isnt a matter of Is Jack Thompson right or wrong. The guy is a dumb motha piece of ***** that summarizes everything that is wrong with our justice system. The article should be titled "The influences of popular media on the public" or something similar"
Damn pissed off 12 year olds, the title made you read it didn't it? Most people see it and probably won't just skip to the comments, they will go and actually READ it.
Great story, dugg. - TheTrueSora, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Awesome article. I'll be watching this site from now on.
- IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good article - worthy of my Digging.
- nstern2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"one industry study predicted that one hundred times that many gamers will wind up getting the new Revolution controller stuck up their ass." "So is that Nintendo's fault?"
-That made me chuckle. - Orunitia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"For comparison, one industry study predicted that one hundred times that many gamers will wind up getting the new Revolution controller stuck up their ass. "
Oookay. - RWVolkl158, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very, very good article! I never quite thought about his first point like that before... Anyhow, Jack Thompson is never "right", but this guy has some insightful points.
- lickmygiggle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I will never listen to a person that uses bully tactics if they don't get their way or someone disagrees with them. Jack Thompson is like Bill O'Reily, sans soapbox.
- WickedOwl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0great read. the story name should be changed though.
- doddilus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Jack Thompson is an idiot. His proposal to create a video game where vid game execs are murdered completely undermines him. If he's so against violence why would he create a violent video game."
can't you do that in postal 2? you can go into the studio of Running With Scissors (makes of postal 2) and kill them all? - GuitaristTom, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahh yes, mr. thompson is starting to come to the realization that he cant win and is now making the same points that have been stated by millions. he's not gonna win or be right ever, but at least now we know that he wont be doing much more harm before he just shuts up
- RevnCliffie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Very well written article. Much can be gained by using a valid debate over "You Suck". Jack is defiantly the kind of extremist we all watch waiting for their fall, but in the meantime we have to at least take a look at what's being talked about. This article does this really well. Between articles like this and the actions of Penny Arcade, the gamers are looking better and better.
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good article. It had Jack in it, and it was still fun to read. Whoa~
- itaylor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fair, balanced point of view - a good read.
- Zeuser, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still waiting for someone to make a "Kill Jack" mod. Hopefully that one in a million (.00003%) will act on it.
Oh, did I say that? So sue me Jack! - Guano, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love that graph.
- anvilon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0To expand on point number four - "games don't teach you how to handle a gun" - he seems to have missed Clive Thompson's (doubt he's related) interesting experiment from 1999:
http://www.media-awareness.ca/english/resources/articles/video_games/good_clean_fun.cfm
This guy seems to have been remarkably adept with the real thing after years of only playing video games. Caveat: He had played arcade-style games with the plastic pistol. - phrenzai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@p00p -- Basically, it's not. In 1980 there were no recorded cases of criminals who claimed Grand Theft Auto III made them commit a murder, now there is one, so you *could* say... "Grand Theft Auto III has dramatically increased the number of murderers". The author was *trying* to make a 5th point for Jack but then says "Okay, so I only had four.".
- gattmolson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Excellent article, the kind of argument that should appeal to all people. No flames, no attacks, just common sense. Worth the read!
- p00p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can someone please tell me how this snippet is relevant?
"In fact, as recently as 1980, there were zero recorded cases of criminals who claimed Grand Theft Auto III made them commit a murder." - joeyjojo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can someone please tell me how this snippet is relevant?"
It's relevant because it's not. (The point is, folks like Jack don't use relevant correlations) - movieguyjon, on 04/03/2009, -0/+0I think the article was mediocre at best. But this issue has kind of bored me as well. Nothing will happen to violent video games, no matter how Mad Hatter Jack tries to stop them.
- solidblu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Great article!
I am Jack's raging hard on for attention. - MightyGiant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I almost cried. Damn good article.
- msodrew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Does Jack ever read anything like this? If someone is halfway supporting him perhaps he'd realize how much of a pencildick he's been.
- drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good read, several good articles on his site.
-drj - avg_bear, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0decent article. still, giving credence to anything Jack Thompson says is a mistake.
- BlueStarr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0He's right you know........hehe....kinda funny but it's serious.
- dori, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Possibly the best article on this subject I have ever read...a very well put together article indeed.
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Decent article, but ***** Jack Thompson.
- lollerskates, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, all of this is true, but Jack Thompson is still an ambulance chaser.
He doesn't acknowledge that games are art media as well, and he doesn't acknowledge that books as well as TV can cause the same effects. He doesn't stop to consider that maybe, just maybe, those kids are pinning the blame on GTA to get out of responsibility. Or maybe he doesn't _want_ to consider it.
He is still, therefore, an ambulance chaser. - hypnotiq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0hah ROFL
"For comparison, one industry study predicted that one hundred times that many gamers will wind up getting the new Revolution controller stuck up their ass."
i eat this stuff up, funny digg - akira117, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0+digg / I agree with lollerskates /
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"You've never heard a song that made you sad? Never cried at the end of a movie? Ever? Not even at the end of Return of the King when the King says, "my friends, you bow to no one?" And all the king's men bowed to the little hobbits?"
Spoiler! - coolchris330, on 07/09/2008, -0/+0The page is dead.
- da_bradler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0***** jake thompson he stands for everything that is wrong with the american political system and he's mean to penny arcade
- Jerryskid02, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I like cookies.
- squall25, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ok..first off. Change the damn title of this ***** Link. Read the article. It is a good article.
