First official Halo 3 video released by Bungie

bungie.net — A Microsoft employee made a video using the halo 3 internal beta. Apparently the bungie guys liked it so much that they put it up on bungie.net.

      Halo 2's single player campaign was such a spit in the face to those who enjoy a single player campaign. Multiplayer isn't everything would... would the Half-Life games be as highly revered as it is today without the campaign backing it? (mods do not count ... and neither does episode 1)

      Water is one of Bungie's favorite things to make, and make well. If a Bungie beta or alpha image has water and it looks bad, it's a placeholder.

      Actually, they don't. The only thing in regards to graphics that Frankie touches upon in the weekly update is the water. He has also said numerous times that the water in these early beta vids is a placeholder. He's also said that they are not going for GoW quality or Half Life 2 realism (with all the extra things thrown in for realism). Halo has its own unique look.

    • BlackKnight6, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14Just in case you guys didn't notice, which it looks like a lot didn't notice, that was a 480i video, it was also badly deinterlaced, this was recorded with a regular PC capture card. In other words, not HDTV, signal loss, conversion, and bad deinterlacing. If you look at screenshots and try to imagine it in motion, it actually is alot better looking, think of some of the behind the scene vids where bungie actually made the vid (in which they either own 1,000 dollar HDTV component capture cards or simply use a dev kit or dev PC to render out an AVI). Hell, graphics shouldn't be THAT important. I see it this way, much bigger levels than GoW (I love GoW btw), vehicles with some nice suspension physics too, 16 players, and its still beta!

      An auto-transfer service would be very nice though.

I mean Gears of War does look absolutely great, but take away that and the gore and what's left is a pretty boring and repetitive game. Halo 3 may not look as realistic as some other games, but it has the most fun and perfected shooting gameplay out of any game I have ever played.

      The recording feature is like an animation file or replay file, similar to a saved replay in PGR3 or a "demo" recorded in Counter Strike or other HL1/2 engine MP games. The guy just played, probably on an HDTV to get the sharper graphics (helps sniping), saved the replay/film, switched cables and hooked up to a PC capture card, then played the demo back and recorded it.

      Come off it man, i can pay 400 and get a top of the line console and play on the same level playing field as every single person. Or I could pay 800+ and play with players on a variety of handicaps graphically and speed related. We get uniformed frame rate, peripherals, speed, graphic qualities, etc. It's the only level playing field (excluding the cheaters and lagger but those are the exception rather then the rule).

      Basically it's just a more solid platform, sure there is a direct ceiling on each console, but it is the same experience for every person therefore the multiplayer is more enjoyable since you don't have to worry that you have inferior hardware. Console is 100% based on skills. Not saying PC gamers don't but all the skill on a crappy PC can't always compete with someone decent with sick hardware.

      EDIT: The above comment changed. He was talking about not getting console games and how console gamers aren't hardcore and how console dumb PC games down. BTW, I still stand by my comment.

Nevertheless, this'll be great for both the machinima side of things, and the competitive side of things. As well as even the casual side of things. I love how they're leaving the campaign of an "oh yeaaah" then surprise with an incredible ending to the best storyline ever.

That being said, I can't help but be a bit let down by what I'm seeing. I completely understand that this a beta we're seeing and it looks good, but there are some things I don't think will be improved in 6 months time and I'm just kind of bummed out. I guess the thing that bothers me the most are the big angular rocks and the trees. I don't know why, but they bother me. They look almost identical to the ones in Halo: Combat Evolved.

    Regardless, this game will be a blast to play and I'm sure the single player will be excellent.

  • CommunistEagle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3Halo 3 basically has the skeletal form of the original Halo, which makes it a great FPS. So, integrating the mutiplayer from Halo 2 just makes it much more excellent. Although I'm not a Halo 2 fan, it's multiplayer is a tad addicting.

    That being said, I'm going to watch the video again.

I am not a big fan of Final Fantasy, but I know a lot of people love it. Cool...good for them. I'm sure it's a great game for people who love it. The LAST thing I have time and energy to do is go around to message boards and social websites like Digg and bag on that game. The insane amount of hate Halo gets is simply a testament that it is a juggernaut. Oh, and as if I needed to repeat what others said, the graphics are Haloish. Bungie themselves said they are NOT trying to match the environmental complexity of games like GOW. The sweetness of Halo lies in its simplicity, gameplay, and the almost cartoony style the game brings to the table.

I really don't understand why people like one shot kills from 3 miles away. It really is boring for the other player. Personally, Gears of War games are ruined by the sniper rifle(fortunately maps limit the amount of sniper rifles but it's still kind of crazy imo) and I wouldn't like to see the same thing happen in halo 3.

    I find that the only game that seems to get sniping right is unreal and that is simply due to the massive speed of the game, the teleporter, and the shield gun preventing games from becoming snipe-fests.

      There is no flame thrower because it wouldnt make sense in MP. The Mark VI armor is fire proof.

    1. Spartan Laser does take skill to use, this guy is just flat out good with Halo 3.

    2. Some guy earlier said that he didn't understand what was so great about Halo, it's just like all other FPS'. Well, it's true. Halo wasn't innovative. There was nothing life changing about it. Instead, they took a genre (FPS) and perfected it. That's why there's already 4 million copies of Halo 3 pre-ordered. Because, as far as FPS games go, Halo is at the pinnacle, on any system.

    4. I'm still seeing people complain about the graphics. All of this footage is either Alpha, or very early Beta-- how can anyone talk about graphics right now? Pleasus.

      Interesting proposition, since (if history is any indication) we won't be seeing Halo 3 on the PC until 2010. So yes, Episode 2 will be better, because anything is better than nothing.

  • Darksoul, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Lets be fair everybody seriously each side has their point and are both right but to talk about the points everybody here is saying first off everybody digging the people down the one that are saying it looks like not like it should for being even a beta have a point the excuse well its a beta its going to get better I have heard that excuse from game company's for ages I have beta'ed alot of games and its always oh things will change it will look and get better case in point battlefield 2.

    But at the same time I do have to say this isn't the time to freak out until we see the game go gold and actually play it we need to not worry. But if once the game goes gold and we actually play it and it still looks like that and nothing has been changed since halo 2 then yeah we need to be pissed seeing as this game is supposed to be the cream of the crop of games for the 360. So relax everybody.

    BTW. I own a 360.

  • achillis01, on 10/12/2007, -4/+0Damn, all the jumps you did in this..... I had already done on my own in the alpha. But Mr. Jukes is good, never had the chance to play him. It was good to see that some of the players he was playing against are very familiar to me. KEBAM, XMAC, and GARBAGEstar are pretty good. when the beta for the public comes out, be sure to look for these guys. If you see SmokedYetti or Fry on the same team..... your ***** will get pushed in!
