- gbm85, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6People are ***** idiots. How many people have posted online about problems with crashing? 100? 200? 500? Even at 500, which is probably way more than the real number, that is still a small percentage of overall sales. All I see is a bunch of anti-MS fanboys trying to make a mountain out of a molehill.
- jediboytj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4read: we rushed it to market.
thats always the way a big company addresses the issue... it happens with EVERYTHING... the PS2 and Dreamcast were two of the bigger problem consoles that were annouced as "a few problem consoles" same with the iPod Nano "a few problems..."
although, usually the ones with the problem consoles are going to be as vocal as possible since they are probably very pissed off... while the ones with the working consoles waste their life away in front of the TV, so you dont hear from them often... - stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"How many people have posted online about problems with crashing? 100? That's right, because I'm sure everyone having these issues rushes right to that message board to register and then post. *rolls eyes* - Amadeus2490, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
Well, Sony fans, you have to remember that the Playstation 2 didn't exactly have a wonderful, bug-free launch. . .
Did anybody else watch the news around the time it came out? I heard about memory cards erasing themselves whenever you tried to play a DVD in them, overheating, and the STILL unfixed "Disk Read Error."
As a person who made the mistake of purchasing the PS2 on October 26th, 2000, I have vowed never again to buy a console on launch day.
And yes, are you familiar with the NES purple screen of death?
*i'm not a fanboy on either side, by the way. You watch how many bugs the PS3 has when it first launches, too, as well as the revolution* - swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I found a mouse with a syringe inside my 360.
- simpled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great, they didn't even test the damn thing.
- acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been playing my 360 most of the last 2 days and have not experienced a single problem. It does not over heat, does not lock up, does not throw an error, nothing. I can assure everyone that the reports you hear are from the vocal minority,
- shoop008, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2What the heck are you people talking about? "Its a common thing for problems during the launch of new consoles.". That's a bunch of BS. Nintendo has never had any problems with any of their systems at launch. The only system they've made that hasn't worked for my entire time owning it is the original NES. It still works but you all know the drill when playing the NES.
- est1984, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1for the price of the console, you'd expect more criticism. the more money spent, the more expectations one would have. and with a shortage of 360s, i doubt it will be so simple as to just exchange it. i see some of you shrugging it off saying it should be expecte. while this is true, i say companies have an obligation to their public. to provide a tested and working product. how long will companies, how long will microsoft, use these same excuses about their flaws? I love hindsight. still, with a launch of this "magnitude," you'd think MS would have something in place or some sort of preparedness. peace off.
- Olle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This the following is of course an uninformed opinion based on bits and pieces of unreliable information on the Internet.
But I read somewhere that the current XBox 360 games were using only one of the 3 cores. I'm not sure that that is true. But for the sake of argument, lets say it is.
So, if the XBox 360 overheats when only one of the cores are running then what will happen when all 3 cores are running?
Microsoft must surely have dimensioned the system so that it can run with all 3 cores running at full blast. Lets say that they were cutting it close with the cooling but that cooling would still be 3 times bigger than it has to be if you are using only one of 3 cores.
Hence, either:
1) The guy that said that the current XBox 360 games are using only one of the cores is full of bs.
or
2) The problems aren't caused by the CPU overheating. It can of course be the GPU or some other component that is overheating, but the CPU is in the clear.
Well, who knows if my logic holds water but this is my reasoning. - Cryptecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I blogged the story and posted my full opinions there, but in short, this is what people get for getting overhyped and spending way too much money on the whole launch.
- aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently, according to Gamespot, anybody with troubled Xboxes can call and MS will overnight them a prepaid shipping box. Affected users can expect a five day turnaround.
- smithco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hey acemilo,
Since you've just posted the first report that I've seen that reports that the 360 does not have any problems you statement can't be true.
One report of it's all OK vs. many reports of problems. I must assume that the number of working 360s is the minority.
(Yes, that's a joke. Laugh.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well.. that's what happens with the #1 shipment regarding what console it is.. remember the PSP for example back in march, tons of dead pixels and sticky buttons.. heh.. wait for the #2 shipment.
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm curious what the actual extent of this problem is. It seems pretty clear to me that there are at least a few units with (what seems to me) to be a very serious problem with overheating and crashing (either CPU or GPU, maybe both), in addition to a few with power supply problems, and some other I/O issues.
But how many are actually having problems? Yes, there are some vocal folks on the Team Xbox (and other) sites. But you have to figure that there are several people with problems who aren't bitching in the public forums for every one that is.
The PowerPC chip will run hot, and if the cooling system in under engineered MS is in big trouble. - angelwspr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ah the benefits of patience... debugged 2nd gen 360s...
- ScottDaMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Since I've seen reports of CRACKED XBOX CASES from newly opened packaging, I'm assuming most of the problems could be from shipping/mishandling.
By the time X360 has decent games, PS3 will be ready. So, for me, if I cant get one by the first of Jan, I'll end up waiting for PS3. I think this hype will hurt MS not help. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well, whatever the problem is, big or small, it appears the defect lies in the hands of MS and not the user. Bringing attention to this defect publicly is good for the consumer because MS and other companies know that bad PR doesnt sell units and therefor should be quick to act upon this and to insure that problems like these do not happen in the further hopefully.
- Marmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1If it's a software problem with PGR, they can patch it over the internet *IF* the system that comes with a hard drive. They may be able to upgrade the console's firmware without a hard disk, but game patches would be quite a different deal.
Personally, I don't think it's a software issue. If PGR crashes as readily and severely as the video suggests, there's no way that kind of software flaw could have slipped by the testers. I bet there's a heat/power or some other strange hardware issue at play here. I'm sure we'll learn more in the next week or so.
As for this being a small minority of consoles, don't forget that a number of these consoles are tucked away as Christmas presents, some of which may have the same problem. Whatever the case, the real interesting thing will be to see how Microsoft manages this. Their response will determine if this will be perceived as a first generation flaw, or if it will permanently mar the reputation of the 360. Especially with their previous track record, Microsoft should take this very seriously. - pltu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1well it is all good and well that they have 1800-piece of crap to call for trouble shooting but if i spent 300-400$ on it i want it to work
- pox05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i guess a statement saying they expected makes it all alright...
i guess - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1GameCube is unstable and crashes quite often. So does Linux.
- kenkyomausu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Can't you xbox fans just come to terms and admit that you guys had a nice run in the best system poll. X-Box 360, Latin for Hype or Dreamcast, just isn't that great. The PS2 and X-box never had a Bad Start like this. This is enough to totally kill the X-box 360. When the Inexpensive, More Innovative, Super Backwards Compatible Revolution comes out, X-Box might just Lose its 1st place...

- chrbeam101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0well i guess releasing the 360 early to take better control of the market wasnt the best choice for microsoft. they should have tested the system and worked out the bugs a little more.
- Aluzion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice digg. Why am I not surprised *roll eyes*
- mdyoke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's unacceptable.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+0"Great, they didn't even test the damn thing."
As usual. MS new products are beta, making the first buyers beta testers.
MS EULA is a bad thing, the Xbox 360 EULA isn't an exception. - ThomasAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Can't you xbox fans just come to terms and admit that you guys had a nice run in the best system poll. OK, you know what kenkyomausu, yer an idiot. I admit the 360 had a bad launch, but those arent the games that people are anticipating. I do think the revolution will be cool and all but once again yer an idiot, you havnt seen any games coming out for it, no screen shots. Nintendo is coming out with a semi cool controller, thats all you know about. They already came out and said theyre not going for graphics but for innovative playability and all that hoo-haa. Many parents will get their gay little child a Revolution and theyll buy one or two games, get bored, and bitch for a 360 because theyre little minds cant hold onto a concept. Im still going to get one, but to say that 360s gonna tank under the wake of a system with specs you have no idea about, makes you sound like an ignorant little bitch with the heart of a hopeful fanboy that, on the inside, knows revolution will not be in the adult market, its a ***** happy meal toy. - wantsagame, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It is true that you can get a replacement unit through MS tech support. The replacement they send you is a refurb. I have had first-hand experience. I sent my console in, then in about 4 days I got it back. I played my new refurb unit for about a week and it started to have problems. I sent it back and MS sent me yet another refurb. I have had it for a little over a month. It has only given me problems on Xbox Live(with freezing). I hope the third ones the charm!
- DEIx15x8, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have an Xbox launch console with no problems and those were known to have bad DVD drives and HDDs that were changed in latter batches. Now after hours in the rain i have the 360 (not playable till Christmas) and it will be the same way, some will have problems and all latter ones will be fixed based on that. I think the main problem is ventilation, the error looks like a heating issue and similar to the ones that stores were having. If you keep them all enclosed like the stores did of course it will overheat, it must breath and be in open space, that's why my consoles always go on a wire rack to give it plenty of breathing room and gets it off of the floor where carpet or other things could block ventilation on the bottom.
- ExplosiveNixon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Noxel, you have not played the PS3; it's not even out yet. So how in the hell can it be dead?
- comdak, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have a huge suspicion that these crashes are being overplayed. Consoles have issues, especially the first revisions. I will not deny that Microsoft has rushed this console out, and probably will see quite a few "updates" via Xbox Live, but c'mon with the hundreds and hundreds of thousands of consoles that were bought in the past 32 hours... there I can bet are less than 1000 real problems. I understand alot of people are having issues, but alot is people doing stupid things like putting it in a tiny little shelf with no airflow, or are striaght up making ***** up.
- Quatre, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Saying that only a few being broken is a bit stupid to me. Even if it is only PGR3, that still a very big problem. What does that mean about the caliber of the games being produced. Of course that is complete *****, but you get the idea. And since Microsoft's name is on it... ipso facto, they need a quick fix. Fast.
- hogrod, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0damage due to shipping is what I'm thinking, have you seen how poorly this this is packaged?
- ElHefe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I was with my friend when he bought his 360. As an Xbox owner I wasn't that impressed. The design was mediocre, the disc tray seems pretty flimsy & the games just looked like pretty Xbox games, but didn't seem like total advancements like we saw with the jump from PS1 to PS2. Madden was a complete mail-in.
- Misos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, I think this crash thing is being overplayed myself. Regardless, it will be interesting to see official figures in the coming weeks.
- hectorhector, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Seems fishy to me. 30 seconds of gameplay and then the video ends 1 second after it freezes? The editing bugs me.
- sjunkins21, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By "a launch of this magnitude" did they mean a launch plagued by shortages and lack of inventory?
- ThomasAnderson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I heard some guy was playing his 360 as usual and he heard a noise like a boeing 747 exploding out of his 360. He opened the drive and retreived the remains of PDZ. Apperently, the lazer actually went into the disk while it was spinning and cut it into two peices. I wouldnt be suprised if my 360 launched a nuclear attack on Russia.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's funny, I never read anything about Gamecubes crashing. Maybe it's because, I dunno, some companies actually care enough about their product to test it properly before releasing it.
Xbox ***** indeed. Sad. - Quatre, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Shipping? How could shipping cause a certain game to crash? That's like saying Windows only brakes if you broke it... and your running Doom 3 on it.
Also, IF it was shipping... that's Microsoft's fault. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"That's a bunch of BS. Nintendo has never had any problems with any of their systems at launch. Nintendo systems crash like *****. NES crashes crazy as *****. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0An MS product has GLITCHES? Is this really a surprise to anyone?
Switch to Linux today! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"its bound to happen"

make better products that don't crash.
first windows, but then ported to your living room. Are they going to crash in my bedroom or kitchen next!? WTF
+digg - kjartan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That's the problem with Microsoft. They know that problems may/will arrive with any of their products. They have that "crutch" to lean on all the time, and use that as their excuse for making sub-par software with great potential.
- Soma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0At least theres not another shipment til after Christmas, and they'll have plenty of time to work out the "small isolated problems". Way to rip off some poor blokes for $400 though...
