- SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -1/+41The PS3's Bluray drive and the 360's HD-DVD drive can read at 72mbps. The transfer speed of USB 2.0 is 480mbps. And yes the HD-DVD drive can be used on a PC.
- angelp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21No, Niko....USB is not capable of transfer speeds fast enough to play back HD-DVD. Microsoft just released a ton of these that can't even play back HD-DVD and duped all the buyers out of $199 each.

- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15I'm fairly certain the cable is used to send the compressed data read on the disk to the 360. As long as the read speed does not exceed the usb transfer speed it should be fine. The real challenge comes with software decompressing and decoding of the data, thankfully the 360 is just powerful enough to do this. Congrats to those that developed the hddvd code for the 360. The HD video is then sent to your tv. So the 360 does most of the work not requiring the hd drive to process and send too much data(giving it the low cost $200 price).
The big question is if it will work with a PC, I've heard it is recognized as a drive, but to be able to decode hddvd is another story. - spartan018, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9in response to rocke86's and reddevil3's comments, the drivers that enable the HD-DVD addon to be used on a PC are here: http://digg.com/gaming_news/Xbox_360_HD_DVD_drivers_for_XP

Making it 159$ - lucas448, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8what happens when u put a xbox, xbox 360, music CD, or DVD movie in the HD-DVD drive? i wonder it you can play music of a CD while you play a 360 game that would be really cool
- ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, considering you can use it on your PC...
I'd say it's a bit more than adding some functionality to the 360. Now you can read HD-DVDs on your PC, perfect for uh, backing them up to the HDD of your MCE or MythTV or whatever. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I picked mine up yesterday. I've only seen King Kong on it, I bought Batman Begins today and moved all my HD-DVD picks from Netflix to the top of my que.
The picture was breathtaking. The sound seemed a bit on the low side. But from what I've been reading Batman has better sound. I couldn't be happier and not only do I have no regrets about buying the drive. I actually feel that I got more then a great deal on it, even at full price.
My thought after watching a few minutes of KK was that I can think of no way some company will be able to produce a TV standard that looks better then what I'm watching right now. Though I know one day it will happen.
Also as I was testing. I popped in a SD-DVD. My first thought was: how will I be able to watch this crud again knowing that my TV can do so much more.
Yeah, I know. I sound like a fan boy. But it honestly looked that much better then even up-converted DVDs.
BTW: my equipment: Samsung HL-S6187W. Pioneer vsx-316. 360 connected via VGA cable. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5If you put anything in the drive that is not a DVD or HD-DVD then you get a message that says something along the lines of: "the disk that you inserted could not be recognized. If this is a audio CD or game CD then insert the disk in the drive located on the 360 console". The message doesn't go away until you remove the disk.
- djtodd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I think I am the kind of person that MS likes. I bought a 360 a while after launch. I buy a few AAA titles here and there and get the rest from GameFly. I just bought a modest HDTV and now, I'm thinking, "Hey, I should get that fancy little HD-DVD add on for my 360 for Christmas." I mean, is this not the logic they hope people follow? Furthermore, I look at the PS3 and think, "Whoa..that's a cool machine! Too bad there are not a lot of games out for it, at least not enough to justify its price. Hmmm, what about the Blu-Ray though? Well, I'll be cool with the HD-DVD on the 360 for now." And there you have it, in my opinion at least, is why I think the console war will be won by Microsoft for the next year or so. Look for a close battle in starting in 2008 though.
- Farmer77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6The guy is right, I couldn't tell the difference between regular DVD and HD-DVD on youtube.
- LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I picked one up. Very happy with it so far (only watched the King Kong disc that comes with it).
I dont really get the "increased noise" comment - my drive is really quiet, much quieter than the internal drive. The internal drive on the 360 is VERY loud for me, but thats easy to remedy - remove whatever game you have in there when you want to watch a movie and it wont spin.
Picture quality is excellent (I have a 46" samsung 1080p lcd). Colors are very good, sound quality is excellent.
I think my only gripe is that it has yet-another-power-supply to plug in. I guess there's not enough juice over the USB cable to run it?
Another quick thing to note: Netflix has HD-DVD and BluRay movies now, you just "enable" them on your account and they'll automatically add that version to your queue if available. I was suprised to find that 4 of the 30 movies in my queue were already out in HD DVD format... I'm definitely planning to go the rental route with these new formats, I have too many DVD's sitting in my cabinet that I've only watched once (or never!). - drwtsn32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5lol @ "another wise"
- marosnax, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just got mine yesterday (the only one that wasn't;t on pre order at my EB in Seattle) and i have to say it was worth every penny and the picture quality and sound is amazing. I am not worried about the blu ray thing cause if it ever becomes the standard all Microsoft has to do is release a new external which I herd from a developer on the team who was talking to major nelson is totally possible if it ever came to that. Besides the only 2 movies I own are mission Impossible 3 and King Kong (which both look amazing)
- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@ SimonX314
You are almost right
Blu-ray 2x = 72Mbp which is 8MBps
12x DVD = ~16.0 MB/s - Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@Mythos
Whoops, thanks for correcting me. - supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and there are 6 million xbox 360 owners, and maybe millions still in stores soon to be purchased for christmas.
Theres what, 10,000 ps3s or something stupid like that...
something tells me HD-DVD by the end of Christmas season will be a lot closer in te race. Im buying one for my xbox, and I thnk most xbox users will. - supermanred, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2HOORAY to microsoft for releasing the hd-dvd as an addon USB unit. NOTE SONY: USB not a ***** up USB-ish like cable. U...S...B... and with drivers so you can plug it into your XP box and play HD-DVD crap on your PC...
very nice. i like. it is nice. sexy time! - TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Real writing and proof reading is dead. Courtesy of the internet
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Not true. The first couple BluRay titles were sub-par. The titles released more recently (like Warner's Batman Begins) look exactly identical on BluRay and HD-DVD. They use the same codec on both, probably even the same digital data, just pressed on two different formats.
I wouldn't expect a player that plays both formats any time soon. - hanapbuhay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PC Drivers:

- hollywoodone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2the drivers arent there anymore says may be illegal?
where can i get em - MidnightWatcher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, it works on a PC. You can play DVD movies, and even read the file structure of HD DVDs if you already have Nero7 installed. To play an HD DVD on the PC you just need WinDVD8 (HD DVD version). No confirmation yet on whether or not you need an HDCP video card. Read more here:

- LowFuel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree with you (though, I did buy one - see my comment lower in thread). Thats why I'm mostly planning on just renting this time around. I remember all too well having a large collection of obsolete laser discs... :P

- lucas448, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2hay if it wasn't for the Sega CD (the first CD system)there would be no PlayStation (or xbox)due to the fact the PlayStation was made by Nintendo and Sony together to to compete with the Sega CD and Saturn... later Sony split with Nintendo and scraped it to make the PlayStation 1... correct me if I'm wrong

- melfster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So far the Blue Ray titles has been sub par. HD-DVD have been better. Form all indications there. Its split down middle in terms of market. I have hd tv set but don't plan on getting a HDVD or blu-ray player until there is a player that plays both formats.
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Yeah, same here with the PS3. Even though I'm getting one, I'm only going to be renting until this sorts out - hopefully within 6-12 months.
- thund3rstruck, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Definitely going to wait for the reviews on this one. The original XBOX and PS2 DVD movie playback looked really pitiful when compared to standalone DVD units. I'd have to be absolutely certain that the picture clarity of this unit was equivalent in quality to the standalone HDDVD units

http://www.chasr.org/ - UMDWei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I got this and it's cool. However, MS may need to do another update for the HD DVD player. I think they recently stopped the problem of displaying notes about your friends signing on and off of Live during DVD play in the fall update, but the problem now exists for HD DVD play.
- UMDWei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The VGA cable is key...
- chriskzoo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Why would anyone pin their hopes on HD-DVD? Let me break it down for you: There are about 25,000 HD-DVD players sold thus far in the US. Now consider that beginning next Friday there will be 12x as many Blu-Ray players sold, as every PS3 is a Blu-Ray player. If you're a movie publisher, whou are you going to cater to - 25,000 people, or 400,000 people. Then consider that every subsequent PS3 ups the Blu-Ray player penetration, but not every 360 ups HD-DVD penetration.
So you have to consider attach rate for the HD-DVD to 360's sold. It's probably going to be 5-10% at MOST, which means as far as HD-DVD is concerned, 360 sales are not that importatnt.
That being said, for people with a 360, this is a very chead hi-def movie option, I just think that HD-DVD is going to languish in the long run, unless those dual discs pan out. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Andreo, good summary.
Kotaku said the same thing. Why would someone who has an HDTV not want an HD disc player?
Sony says the same thing, so they built it in and saved people money in the process. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5Someone has to buy this guy a tripod...
- TheDiggMan, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7That guy needs to get a tripod.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2***** massive.
- carguy84, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Shouldn't be an issue, the average data rate of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs is around 20Mbps, far under USB2.0's 480.
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -12/+2No I don't think you can attach the HD-DVD drive to a PC and use it. It's solely for the 360.
- Nezzari, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Bury this
- mikoyski, on 10/12/2007, -17/+4It's not a "Low Cost" Device. It's an expensive "Attachment". I mean, what does it do to the xbox 360 other than play HD-DVD movies? Will there be xbox360 games on HD-DVD? If so then we are seeing the second coming of the Sega CD.
- NikoKun, on 10/12/2007, -57/+6Wait... It attaches via USB? O_o
um, Is USB even capable of transfer speeds fast enough to playback HD video???
cause I know usb tv tuners really suck down ur tv frame rate... lol So this can't be good...@_@ Unless maybe it reads off the disk, caches it all on the 360... and THEN plays it back... but I would think that would cause horrible load times...>_>
This all just seems like Microsoft trying to 1up Sony's BluRay.
(IMO neither of these formats should be coming out yet... but meh...)
