- jjalsop, on 02/01/2009, -10/+66I was going to pick this up on release, however playing the demo has changed my mind.
The controls are really, really slow. Like, autistic kid riding a turtle slow. The whole control scheme feels clunky and awkward, which is really annoying because this game looked like it had so much potential. I will pick up RE5 if; aiming speed can be increased, movement of the camera speed can be increased, they change "Hold A to run" to "push all the way forward on the left stick to run" and they at least give us the option to move slowly whilst shooting. - RicardoWilliams, on 02/01/2009, -5/+47if only they could make the movies as good as the game ::sigh:::
- LiamIsOnFire, on 02/01/2009, -3/+44Agreeing with most of the comments in here. The game is really fast paced, like action game-esque fast; so when I have to use controls that are designed for a horror game, it starts to feel like a mess.
- AeroZeppelin, on 02/02/2009, -6/+34I might be a minority here, but I thought RE4's control system was perfect.
- Slashered, on 02/01/2009, -2/+27Personally, I can't wait for this game as RE4 was probably my favorite game in the series, and I've played it since the original. Messing up the controls though is my biggest worry, as it was pretty much agreed upon to be the biggest fault of the early games. Lets hope all goes well.
Some other first impressions of the game - http://www.gamesradar.com/xbox360/resident-evil-5/ ... http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8979759&pu ... http://arandomgamer.com/2009/01/first-impressions- ... - czimmerman, on 02/01/2009, -3/+23It's weird, when I loaded up the demo, I had to go back and make sure I didn't accidentally start up Gears of War 2...
No offense to Resident Evil 4, it wasn't Resident Evil, but it was a hell of a good game...four years ago. As the article pointed, times have changed. When I played the demo, I just wasn't that impressed. I miss the old Resident Evil. - MasterPain, on 02/01/2009, -6/+20I played the demo & the controls are terrible. Can not move at all while aiming or using the knife. What is the use of having an awesome looking machete if you cannot move at all with it. Instead of hacking with it you swat with it. Of course it is also impossible to load a gun & walk at the same time in the resident evil series. The game looks very good but the controls are way to clunky, and while the co-op mode is cool it is nothing new to gaming.
- marconi88, on 02/02/2009, -1/+15In Dead Space your character can move while shooting; this is something RE5 lacks.
- reyoo30309, on 02/01/2009, -2/+16DS has the controls the RE series should have. And if you play re5 then play DS you can see that.
- ed4649, on 02/02/2009, -1/+14By the looks of things, RE5 could learn a thing or two from Dead Space, Gears of War and Left 4 Dead.
- wafflesomd, on 02/02/2009, -0/+12Have you ever been able to move and shoot in a RE game? No.
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+12RE2. Hands down.
- cerealjynx, on 02/01/2009, -6/+16Awesome, it's gonna be another rail shooter without rails with no horror aspects at all.
- staticneuron, on 02/02/2009, -0/+9Actually in addition to the controls I hated the focus on co op. I mean, when you play gears you could play the single player mode without even noticing there is a co op mode. So when you do play fo op it is even more awesome.
In the RE5 demo, they made it painfully obvious that it was a co op venture, with sheva's spotty AI and having to micromanage her the game felt more frustrating then scary or suspenseful. Its good that they added co op. Its messed up that they broke the single player to do so.
I am most likely going to sit this entry to the series out. - aspec, on 02/02/2009, -1/+10What they really need to do is ramp up the horror factor. Remember when it was terrifying to play an RE game? I bet a character like Candlejack would really he
- CalebBlusummers, on 02/02/2009, -0/+9I completely agree. Holding A to run kinda sucks when you use the right stick to change directions as well. The demo was full of running...stopping to turn a fraction of a degree...and then running more. Also, I played it single player, and every time i died was because the stupid AI controlled partner kept getting her head cut off. RE5 is no where near RE4 imo. Also...I like to be able to pause the game when i access my inventory.
- skywake, on 02/02/2009, -1/+9Dead weight? Have you ever seen an Autistic kid sit still? I am willing to bet that if you put an Autistic Kid and a turtle in the same room there is no telling what will happen to the turtle.
- Mejogid, on 02/02/2009, -3/+11Could you perhaps say the word "girl" one more time? Just to remove any ambiguity over your sex.
- phrenzy, on 02/02/2009, -1/+9Being dugg down by people that like SHOOTERs - being dugg up by people who like (and appreciate) SURVIVAL HORROR. Hint - RE4 is an action game - NOT survival horror.
- kurtiscaston, on 02/02/2009, -1/+9In the demo you can change the controls, I found Control Type B not too bad at all. The game is awesome, and I will probably at least rent it. My only gripe is that an enemy with an instant kill chainsaw is cheap as hell!
- jjalsop, on 02/02/2009, -0/+8I love how the autistic kid on a turtle thing has generated discussion.
- RSAgent007, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8You sir, are an idiot.
The PS3 does not have a better controller, nor does the 360. It's completely up to the player's preferences. Personally, I think that the 360 analog stick > PS3's analog stick, but PS3's d-pad > 360's d-pad. Again, it's an opinion.
Don't try to shift the blame of the game's poor controls to Microsoft. - reyoo30309, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8I have no problem with not being able shoot/stab and move at the same time. re4 was like that and it was awesome but the controls are just bad in re5 the devs knew it thats why they have like 6 different controls settings (sadly they all still stink).
- Yage2006, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8Do you still have to press left to turn left right to turn right and up to go forward down to go back?
That was the dumbest control scheme I have ever seen in a game and is why i stopped playing the first one. - skywake, on 02/02/2009, -2/+9Wouldn't a turtle move faster with an autistic kid on its back? My niece is autistic and she would be just as likely to pick the turtle up and run away with it. Are you trying to say that the turtle stole your controller? :o
that bastard!
:o - Spandia, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8It's not the exact same control scheme. It's slower and awkward. It's like RE4 but not as good.
- alkajazz, on 02/02/2009, -1/+8Bad controls are nothing new to the franchise. I'm willing to take the bad with the good. I love the Resident Evil franchise.
- 33PercentGod, on 02/02/2009, -3/+10Resident Evil 4.5
Seriously though, this game has taken a great step forward in it's gameplay design, but 10 steps back in the story/atmosphere. The game used to be a creepy,zombie/mutant story about the tyrannical Umbrella Corporation. Now it's just another action game that lost all of it's atmosphere and scares for a bunch of explosions. - lcmatt, on 02/02/2009, -1/+7The controls also put me off. Without the demo RE5 would have been an instant purchase however after playing I won't be parting with my cash.
My biggest problem with the game is the zombies. They've been watching too much L4D and then suddenly realize than they can't run stopping metres away from you to walk. - BlackKnight6, on 02/02/2009, -0/+6People keep referring to Dead Space as a survival horror that has evolved with the times. You can't roll or jump or do any crazy acrobatics but you at least WALK while aiming and reloading and healing and looking at inventory. RE4 was a great game but its controls were that way because of the controller, not the game type. You can still have monsters or zombies "lunge" at you even if you can walk while doing things like aiming or slashing a knife. And people aren't asking for Halo or Gears player movement, we just want plain MOVEMENT when doing simple actions in the game.
Nothing pissed me off more in the demo than walking up to a zombie, pulling out the knife, slashing, oops not close enough, put knife away, walk forward, pull out knife, slash again. It was clunky with todays controllers. Just let us WALK SLOWLY while aiming and etc. Thats all people's complaints are. - inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+6Why do you care?
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+6Frankly I found the controls in the demo debilitating and tear inducing after having finished resident evil 4 on wii. I'm sorry but the xbox360 and ps3 need compatibility with the wii remote or at least bring the game to wii in a graphically reduced form, I didn't see anything that couldn't be done on wii in the demo, with crapper textures and less geometry. Resident evil 4 was awesome due to it's gameplay, involving story and exceptional presentation, I'm afraid shader effects and high res textures won't save resident evil 5 from inferiority compared to it's older cousin.
I felt like a cripple trying to play the game with controls that no longer suit this kind of game. - Nobody1307, on 02/02/2009, -0/+6Exactly, and that's what made the game (among other things)
-Ability to strafe while aiming is awesome
-Not having to hold a button to bring up the weapon then press another button also helps... automatic melee no slow pull out weapon and aim swinging...
seriously Dead Space's controls were probably one of the best in any horror game - Katana314, on 02/02/2009, -0/+6Okay, I really wasn't expecting much from this game, but my ***** detector went off reading this. "Controls fit for a horror game?" If I'm right, that's how it's MEANT to be; you can't be dashing around zooming away from monster attacks WHILE aiming at them; otherwise you'd never have those moments of a monster lunging at you with you trying to shoot it away. And the comparison to Left 4 Dead was just retarded. I love that game, but they're MEANT to be completely different. Also, anyone who was actually scared of Resident Evil 4 probably shouldn't be playing M games anyway...
- kamildiouri, on 02/02/2009, -2/+8the controls for RE5 are definitely a dud
- dice4death, on 02/02/2009, -1/+7lol 3th person shooter
- staticneuron, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5......... by the way, sheva has some nice boobs.
- slicecom, on 02/02/2009, -3/+8I hated RE4 and I'll hate this one. Bring back the old, dark, scary Resident Evils please! There are enough shooting games out there already.
- inactive, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5That's when you run like a little bitch
- aggies11, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5RE4 (and RE5 more so) use the "limited" controls as a way to increase the tension the player feels. When you can't just backpedal while shooting at the chainsaw wielding zombie it definitely increases the pressure felt. You have to be methodical, do you stand and shoot, or turn around and run? Sure he walks slow, but just like in the movies that slow moving monster sure catches up to you pretty quick.
Deadspace definitely has more "freedom" in it's controls, personally though once I became competent with the controls (45mins or so) the "monsters" were no longer a real threat (scare). I was able to dispatch them with ease, which seriously lowered the amount of tension I felt.
If RE5 gave you this freedom, then you'd probably need fast moving zombies (it'd be too easy with the slow moving ones). However once you have that, you have Left 4 Dead, and it's no longer Resident Evil.
Yes the controls are an artificial limit, but without them I think the game would lose much of it's appeal/style. - BlackKnight6, on 02/02/2009, -0/+5Stop acting like people want it like Gears, I JUST want to WALK SLOWLY while aiming or reloading or having a knife out, not be able to roll around all fast like gears. I expected the controls to be like Dead Space. RE4 controls were fine for the GC's controller and having one main analog stick, but there is a new standard when it comes to controllers these days, we have TWO analog sticks. You couldn't move while aiming in RE4 because when you aimed you lost your damn stick you used to move! Same way we wouldn't like an FPS to have controls like Goldeneye. Was Goldeneye awesome at the time? Yes. Would a moden FPS's controls be nice if it were like Goldeneye's?
I think most would say no. - Nobody1307, on 02/02/2009, -1/+6Yea that's true, if Candlejack was in it this would be
- MrFoodMonster, on 02/02/2009, -1/+6I thought it was awesome. I'm sure the focus on the 'gunplay' is because it's the demo and they want people to get hyped for it. While the full game may be fun, I don't want to wander and solve a puzzle in the demo. The guys you fight in the demo are hardly something to be called boss battles. If you've played RE, you know they've got much better, real bosses in store. I also don't mind the controls that much, it works for the style of gameplay. The only thing that bothered me was the 'real time' inventory. I liked hitting pause and being able to re-equip, take a green herb if I need it, or whatever. Trying to heal yourself in the heat of battle is pretty tough in real time.
- o0jrock0o, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4There's a main difference between the two. In RE4, the left stick was for moving and turning, period. All the right stick did was control the camera. By default, in RE5, there is a "shooter" control scheme, where you walk and strafe with the left stick and look side to side with the right. You can set RE5 to have the same controls as RE4, though.
- phrenzy, on 02/02/2009, -2/+6Comments on this thread are proof that people won't be happy until they've stripped everything out of RE that makes it RE and turn it into Gears Of War.
Lots of kids wanting to play grown up by blowing ***** up that don't understand the value of SUSPENSE. - uberduger, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5Or the Hypnotoad. That would be so scary that th- ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD.
- Thorpe, on 02/02/2009, -0/+4Half the time, I am trying to combine ammo whilst avoiding zombies. It's really tedious and I think there should be a more easier way or applying herbs/ammo and such.
- jermm, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5I'll wait for the not as well produced but much more fun Left 4 Dead mod.
- Jaysunli, on 02/02/2009, -2/+6I'm surprised people are complaining about the controls.
Yes, it is slow but that is the entire point. This game is not Gears. It is almost exactly the same as RE4 and that is a good thing.
It took me two tries on each level of the demo to finish it. The only awkward thing to me was the knife controls. The partners A.I. is fine and helped me out a few times. People will complain about anything. - VipeNess, on 02/02/2009, -1/+5Game demo had alot of potential, but not being able to move and shoot or reload i was not enjoying. I do hope capcom considering changing with game andvancement instead of sticking with what worked back then should work now idea.
