- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Dark_Alex is a god. The man in conjunction with a few others is almost single handedly making the psp the device the users want.... unfortunetely, like on many other fronts, Sony has no concept of what the consumer wants or needs. They're determined to force their vision down our throat. Dark_Alex saves the day.
- b0wl0fud0n, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Unfortunately Dark_Alex is considering ending involvement with psp development:

From his site: 'Tired, tired and tired. I was already tired in my personal life, and i'm now getting tired of my "virtual" life too.I don't feel secure anymore in the net. I don't feel my computer secure. Because of this, I'm considering to stop any psp development.' - molecool, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Last week I turned one of my PSPs into a brick with one of those downgraders. My fault really - I looked but didn't see the serial number inside the UMD drive which indicated that it couldn't be updated. Generally, I'm extremely pissed at Sony - they released this thing over a year ago and are copy-protecting the device to its death. Could have had great potential if they would have opened it up and supported things like MP3 playback, podcasts, games off the memory stick, etc. I actually had to install a crack on my other PSP so that it could play fullscale video from my memory stick, ridiculous. What they don't realize is that kids have a choice these days and if you lock down your product then it will be happily ignored. And the PSP is a prime example of that happening because it's got a great form factor, wonderful screen (more colors than any PMP out there), good interface, battery life, etc. Sony is ***** it up and the management is at the same time scratching their heads why they're getting their ass kicked by Nintendo. Well, duuuuh - tons of people have turned their PSP into bricks attempting to get it do things they really want it to do. Nobody wants your ***** UMD games and especially those UMD movie releases - which btw are waaaaay too expensive. Get a clue Sony and open this puppy up!!!
- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Basically it gives you the ability to run homebrew applications not originally intended to be ran on the PSP, such as emulators, wifi sniffers, etc. For whatever reason, Sony, in all their infinite knowledge, decided it will NOT allow homebrew to happen on PSPs, and so they have done most everything within their power to prevent homebrew (possibly because it allows downloaded and copied UMD disks to be run from the memory card.)
- siliconentity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Could someone explain what you can do with a downgraded PSP that you can't do with a regular one? To someone who is not familiar with the scene?
- shadus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5You're wrong, dark_alex is making sony money. I'm NOT buying a PS3, and I'm NOT buying games I already own from the PS1. The fact that I *can* now run my old PS1 games without spending more money is the ONLY reason I got a new PSP.
Running my old PS1 games on PSP without paying for them again... Check
Running my old NES, SNES, and Genesis games on PSP without paying for them again... Check.
Purchase PSP... Check.
There was -zero- reason I would have purchased a new psp after my old one broke since I couldn't downgrade and use what I wanted to with it.
I won't pay for something I've purchased once again without a compelling reason... graphics upgrades would be compelling, a different platform isn't. - xelloss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No 2.81 yet :(
- Johnkers, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and since then he's released at TA-082 Downgrader, OE-B Custom Firmware as well as various smaller things like a Devhook port and such.
Doesn't look like he followed through with that to me - GeekedAtBirth, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So you have to have two PSPs?
- SLSSNAKE, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a risky, convoluted process, but I can say from experience that getting 3.02 OE-B and getting your own PSX games running full speed on PSP is worth it. I'm just glad I don't have the restrictive motherboard.
Honestly, if Sony had given us at least a way of getting PSX games without a PS3, maybe people wouldn't have to resort to this... but it's just a bit frustrating to have a 200+ dollar investment require a 500+ dollar extra to work.
But I guess that's the nature of big business. :P - plastek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Any hope for a ta-082 with 3.0?
- caselogic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i think this keeps people interested in the system and allows them to buy newer games (not me) because they can keep there emulators and homebrew while getting the new features of the firmware upgrades.
with out people like Dark_Alex psp would have been dead along time ago. it keeps me into seeing what's out there and btw FF7 on PSP is amazing. - doogiemac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Must be getting closer for the 2.81..
In any case what an awesome contribution to the psp scene. - Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A slight correction: my younger brother's PSP has a TA-079 motherboard.
- Daisuke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"I'm just glad I don't have the restrictive motherboard."
Only 3 days ago, I bought a PSP with the intention to run homebrew on it. It came with 2.6 firmware, but unfortunately had the TA-082 motherboard. Thank goodness for Dark_AleX though, because as soon as I updated to 2.71 and then downgraded to 1.5 using his special tool for the "restrictive" motherboard(s?), it worked just as well as my younger brother's psp, with 1.5 and a TA-082. Basically they're exactly the same now - no real special considerations after using the special downgrader that I'm aware of. - matriculated, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is by 0okm not Dark Alex. It does use some of Dark Alexs tools though.
- duccodude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i dont think so
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@shadus: your logic only works if Sony is making money of selling the PSP hardware. They aren't, so Dark_Alex and the likes are causing them to loss money.
- DBXMe2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I dont get what's so special about downgrading your firmware off your psp.... for this perticular version???
Figure out how to hack Location Free TV so we can start taping into other people's streams!
have a nice day ;) - bergur1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2Well what Dark_Alex is doing is loosing money for sony. If we won't buy their games who will?
On a lighter note though I was surprised when someone manage to one up Fanjita. I am running 3.02 OE-B and I am loving everything about it.
