- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+37Oh wow the DS can play CGI videos. What does the game play look like?
- Stonelion, on 10/12/2007, -7/+39Dude, that is soo a pre-rendered cut scene...
Show me game play footage like that, and then we'll talk! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+24nmaster64 is obviously a newbie in the gaming industry.
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22What's impressive about FMV? o.O
- drlha, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Anyone who thinks this isn't pre-rendered is living in a dream world. Not even the PS2 FFXII looks that good when running. Basically a nice CGI trailer, which tells us nothing about what the DS game will be like.
- chicken101, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16The square-enix trailers are ALWAYS prerendered. The ps3 or the xbox 360 would have a hard time rendering stuff like that.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16shiny, you need a better sarcasm detector. Oh, and seriously those Metroid CGIs don't look near as nice...
- museo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Cause alpha male jocks are useless at saving fantasy worlds.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Probably something like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVMcmvYxj-U (FF3 DS Gameplay Video) - goat77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11The more I read the caption, the more idiotic I think this submission is. Marked as inaccurate.
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10Wow, a cutscene. I was expecting some indication of the DS gameplay.
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12I'd hit the elvish chick.
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Uh, maybe 10 years ago. Compressing 5 minutes of 320x240 video down to a few megs isn't exactly unusual, and flash (which is essentially what DS carts are) isn't all that expensive anymore.
It looks interesting, but there's nothing magical here. :p - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7whats with the 12 year old belly dancer
- goat77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Nmaster, Metroid Hunters uses dual-screen FMV. This video is not impressive in the least.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4That music was used in Final Fantasy 1 (The first, NES one, in good old fashioned square-wave synthesis). It's the theme of the entire Final Fantasy series, not Final Fantasy 4.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9Official Japanese website for the game is up:
http://www.square-enix.co.jp/ff12rw/
It's got some story and character info, though it's in Japanese. Art and wallpapers are there too though for non-Japanese speakers. - kobe81, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Er, Terra's from FFVI.
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yeah, I'm really confused as to how those pants could possibly go so low on her anatomy and still cover what parts they are suppose to cover...
- reda, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2and the "terra" song is another one .. it's the first song you hear on FFVI before you even start playing (the scene in mode7 with the tek robots walking to the city)
that song has been on all FF games - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I would think what we're seeing from Final Fantasy III for DS is a good indication of what to expect from Final Fantasy XII, at least in terms of in-game graphics and general gameplay. The battle system is the real question mark...
- oGMo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Also note this game is supposed to be "My First Final Fantasy:"
http://ds.ign.com/articles/733/733945p1.html - painting, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7when will there be a final fantasy where there isn't a gender bending male hero??
- motang, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Impressive cut scene, I wonder how the gameplay is going to be.
- sjm20k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think the FF series is dead. I've played since the first US release on the NES and guy who was responsible for producing all of these games quit after FF10. I think classic RPG gaming has gone by the wayside - the last one I played was the latest Dragon Quest for PS2. I hope the spirit of the old FF games (Im talking like 2 and 3) is revived elsewhere by people who remember how fun those games were.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5It isn't engrish. It's English pronounced as romaji, for which there are rules. It isn't just a poor attempt to speak English.
- t.toe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4here's why we're digging nmaster down: it's obvious that he originally thought these graphics were being produced by the DS hardware ("If this trailer really is rendered on the DS, it's among the best looking portable games to date."). of course, he's trying to play that off now, but the original text of his story, I think, speaks for itself.
- UberC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Um, some gameplay please?
- phort99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How can you even tell that the DS FMVs won't be all pixellated? First of all, it's not as though Square converts their videos to the DS's video format and compression, plays that back on the hardware, and then brings it back and turns that into a trailer, this is definitely going to be directly what they pre-rendered. Secondly, it's on YouTube, which compresses all of their video to FLV which gives it some hideous compression anyway. This quality is not going to be what you'll see on your DS, one way or another. Whether it'll be better or worse, I can't say, but I know that the FMV in MP:H didn't look bad on the DS's screen. If you're judging by the quality you see in video captures of games with FMV, that is re-compressed anyway and doesn't look as good off the DS than it does on it.
Oh, and your last post, nmaster64, still doesn't rule out the possibility that you're playing off that you didn't know it wasn't being rendered by the DS. ;) - seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Lay off the original submitter. Everyone knows that the first game trailer these days is always a cinematic trailer.
- krum0786, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Final Fantasy XIII has a female as the main hero.
- blcarson, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Anybody else crack up from the engrish at the end?
- jayfarer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The GBA could have cool cutscenes, too.
Anyway, looks like Skies of Arcadia. - phort99, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe the title's saying that you don't have to fantasize anymore because that's the writers' job? So your last fantasy was your Final Fantasy? There's no sense in trying to make any logic of the title, and it's not going to be changed because it's already been used for a megaton of games by that title. If they changed it to "Continuous Fantasy" or something like that, they'd only be affirming that they've maybe made a few too many games.
- Kuipo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good to know thanks for the link. Still sounds interesting tho, as long as the story is good the weaker gameplay might be worth dealing with.
- seneyr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Right, and we all know how well Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was recieved. If people want a good starter FF, give them IV. IV is probably the most streamlined game in the series, with not a whole lot of side quests (almost all of them are just for summons) and not many options in terms of developing your characters' skills (ie. no Job, Esper, Materia, GF, Sphere system to speak of).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think this digg sums it all up to be honest....
http://digg.com/gaming_news/Final_Fantasy_XII_wtf - jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Everyone remember how impressive Blizzard FMV's were for Diablo and WarCraft? :D
- JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its not illegal to have sex with digital chicks who look 9.
- Raids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Terra... FF6 main character pretty much
- BleedingHollow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why is this marked inaccurate this game was announced.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've been a gamer for over 15 years, and a game journalist for over 4. I'm in the middle of working towards a Master's Degree in Computer Science, and I maintain above a 3.0 average at one of the best engineering colleges in the country. Trust me, telling the difference between pre-rendered and gameplay footage is a hell of a lot easier than studying Calculus 3 and Data Structures in Programming.
The first point you made was EXACTLY what I've been trying to say. The video looks amazing sans the YouTube compression, so if they can keep that level of quality when moving it to the DS, I will be extremely impressed. But yes, the recompression might pixelate it just like all the other DS FMVs, and in that case, well, blah who cares anymore. If anyone can do it though, it's Square... - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3*sigh* Look, it was just a mistype on my part when I wrote the story. I used the word "rendered" incorrectly. I would never be so gullible as to ever believe those were in-game graphics. I have trouble believing the DS can even pull off that nice of FMVs, as all the ones for current games look extremely pixelated and no where near this high quality. I expect the in-game graphics to look more like FF3 DS, as I noted in numerous other comments.
I apologize to everyone for the slip-up, the sentence should have read more like "If this trailer really is what we'll see on the DS..." It was simply nothing more than a typo on my part, I'm sorry. - itsmattadams, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Looks better than the FMV's in Resident Evil Deady Silence, I can't to see some of the gameplay though.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Just to let you know, the only FF games that I would actually consider RPGs would be FFXI and maybe FFV. Other than that, they are all adventure games. A role playing game isn't where you just play a role... if that was so, then sports games would be RPGs. Tomb Raider and Prince of Persia would be RPGs. D&D is an example of an RPG. You actually create the character and play it's role. Fable was an RPG. Now, if you could take Cloud from FFVII and have him join Sephiroth and Shinra and help make Arieth a tasty shiskabob, then that would make it an RPG. So, please, stop calling the FF series an RPG series.
- igraham09, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1she looks like she's about 9...
so...
no thnx. - Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Up until FFX-2 and the new FFVII game, there were no sequals to the FF games. Final Fantasy 1 ended and Final Fantasy 2 started a whole new story with new characters and stuff. So, in essence, that fantasy/epic/story ended. If you want to go with semantics, the movie line Neverending Story should still be going on. I only count the first and second one cause the third was crap.
- Raids, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0everytime i hear that song it brings a tear to my eye.. soo many good memmories..
and to the people saying it is "terra's song" your wrong.. that song been in the series since the first final fantasy.. after you defeat garland and the king makes a bridge at the very start of the game.. you cross the bring and get a bit of a story and the song plays.. - kikuchiyo11, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1The music is probably just stock stuff. The major theme was the Theme of Final Fantasy, which was, surprise surprise, in most every FF main series FF game.
More likely than not this is either some "new" genre that SE is branching out into (and probably not well), a strategy RPG, or an action RPG along the lines of Slime Mori Mori or Zelda. My money's on SRPG (it's the same Ivalice as FTTA). - J6stik, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Why is everyone digging nmaster64 down? Jesus, he's just saying that he thinks the video looks good.
