- Makubex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+29I, for one, am really hoping that this game is more like FFT then FFTA. Don't get me wrong, advance was still a good game but it had this childish, dumbed down, feel to it. It just didn't leave me in awe the way that the original tactics did. To be completely honest, I wouldn't complain if they just stuck with the original graphics and perhaps just updated some of the in game art (i.e. cut scenes) and magic animations.
The original FFT is still one of my favorite games, just the complexity that they managed to squeeze in is mind boggling. Square could easily turn this into its own franchise. - rugger, on 10/12/2007, -2/+28If this version has laws like the last one I'll be pissed.
- aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+23The storyline of Final Fantasy tactics was like War and Peace the game.
- eric1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Agreed. The political nature of the first one was far superior to the kiddy atmosphere of the GBA version. A true sequel to FFT would be phenomenal.
On a side note, I'm probably one of the only people that (generally) enjoyed the laws. It added an element of strategy that made you use lesser used classes at times to get around the restrictions. - VitaminK, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Surely getting a new game instead of a remake is a better deal. I really enjoyed playing through both games, and would love to see a new entry in the series.
- Jagdhund, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15FFT is my favorite game of all time. Not only was it an awesome strategy game, but the storyline was great. Medieval politics mixed with Japanese high fantasy (which I usually don't like). It was great. The fact that all your heroism is lost to history is the best ending ever. That and Delita being stabbed.
FFTA was slightly disapointing. It was like a childrens' book and lacked the bloody good storyline of the first.
I hope that the next sequel will bring back the spirit of the original game. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15I cannot wait to see how this works on the DS. The one for the GBA was more or less the best game for that system (right up there with Advance Wars 2 and Warioware)...and I can not imagine Square messing this one up.
As for the laws....they were OK, but they did kinda suck once there were 3 or so laws in effect during a match - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It is illegal to complain about games on a Thursday. Go to jail.
Yeah, I really hope it is like the original FFT. I'd kill a man to get it if it were. - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I don't think it'll be a sequel to Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. That game didn't really need a sequel. They're probably keeping the same name, though, just because that's what Square-Enix does.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10If anything FFT deserves it the most...
- pooper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Oh shnaaps, FFT is still my favorite FF, as long as they take care of the PSP's load times...
- ryanfelix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9@qweedo: They're releasing a FFT remake for the PSP, and releasing a new game on the DS (Final Fantasy Tactics ADVANCED 2)....
But seriously, this is amazing news. I've played FFT coutless amount of times and is, if not, the best Tactics style of game ever created.
They need to creat a true sequel to the original.. - Gundam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Ya, I think the PSP is getting the better deal because it is getting the original, the DS is getting a sequel to the Advance version, yuck.
- tknaught, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think the political nature of FFT had a lot to do with director Yasumi Matsuno, who also directed Vagrant Story and FFXII, both of which had similar stories.
Unfortunately Matsuno no longer works at Square, so I've given up most hope on getting a proper FFT sequel. - katsanes, on 01/30/2008, -0/+7Learn what Prozac is used for?
- djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7"Did they ever make Disgaea or Makai Kingdom in english?"
Get off the internet, please. - Konklone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5FFTA took place in an explicitly made up world. Look at the Wikipedia page for "Ivalice". FFT, Vagrant Story, and FFXII all take place in Ivalice, and FFTA takes place in a fake Ivalice. This is canon. So, if they reference the "Final Fantasy" series, that's only meant to reinforce that the world is an illusion world spawned off of someone in "our world", something which never happens in a real FF. FFTA intentionally breaks the fourth wall, in an attempt to be charming. Whether it succeeds on you or not is a personal matter.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+13Speak the truth! FFTA sucked and everyone who likes strategy rpgs knows it.
- VitaminK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I'll reserve judgement until the game is out. I just want more FFT!
- tknaught, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I have to disagree. While the localization and presentation work for Nippon Ichi's games is top notch, they are nowhere near the level of the original FF Tactics, or even Tactics Ogre or Vagrant Story 2.
NI games tend to have boring job class systems that consist of pallette swaps of the same basic 10 classes and very simplistic skill systems. If you want to be able to get any of the hidden stuff in those games, you have to spend 100 hours grinding through gimmicky stuff like the Item World. - Trinitrogen, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7I also hope the sequel is more like the original FFT. I almost turned off Tactics Advanced when the character actually mentions the Final Fantasy series.
- staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Hmmm, gameplay was amazing in disgea (haven't tried Makai yet) but for FFT the gamepla and story was beyond belief. I really disliked FFTA, I made sure to beat it but I could help but feel that it was subpar in so many ways. Sort of the same feeling when comparing xenosaga to xenogears.
- VitaminK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4So someone who can't get the name right is more credible than a scan from Shonen Jump? It's Advance, not Advanced.
- fakesinatra, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5FFT was/is a masterpiece and one of my favorite games of all time. I would rate it a 9.5/10 and it loses that 0.5 because square botched the translation very badly making the plot very hard to follow. Sure it was possible to follow it in a general sense but to really catch all the little ins and outs you had to read an FAQ,
If the PSP version corrects the translation, adds a custom battle mode (where you select a map, select enemies, objectives, etc) and adds some form of multiplayer then I will buy a PSP to play it. If it's the same FFT from the playstation then there's no need for me to buy it because I have the original game.
As for a sequel to FFTA...
I don't know. FFTA was a good game but I found that it got really dull because it was just way way too easy. I really liked the law system though. I would be willing to give the sequel a try if it gets good reviews. I was prepared to buy FFTA regardless of the reviews. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3tknaught: crap don't reveal those type of things to me, never seeing a true FFT sequel is very saddening to me :( sigh
oh well, i will buy a PSP just for this remake alone... sigh
(and i have a DS but ill completely ignore the game if its like FFTA) - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5buy a handheld. When you are sitting back on your couch, its very convenient.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Sure, FFTA wasn't as good as Tactics Ogre for the GBA but I don't see how people can claim it sucked.
So what if the laws were frustrating, but they made the game more challenging, and made it impossible to use the same tactics in every level (which would make for an extremely boring game) - azathothx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4FFTA missed the point of FFT. While we loved the complex (thanks mr. translators!) story and incredibly deep gameplay of FFT, in FFTA we got a dumbed down mass-market game. I personally never thought it would be any other way. FFT was quite an adult game dealing with many issues totally unheard of in normal kiddie games. It was Square back in the days of yore (like in FF6, suicide and teen pregnancy to name but two taboos) when they weren't afraid of doing things a bit edgy. FFTA was the 'New Square' fresh from its merger with Enix it decided to try and get some quick funds together and put out a family friendly Final Fantasy game to bring in the cash. It is exactly the same as what happened with Crystal Chronicles. Attempting to take a relatively mature franchise and make it more accessible. It was a misguided idea as both games sold rather poorly, the majority of regular FF players deciding they were too gimmicky and some (especially with the release of FFX-2) actually turning from Square altogether.
Square have taken these lessons relatively onboard now it seems. Final Fantasy XII was the game FF lovers had been craving for and the GBA and DS remakes have been very favourably recieved. Games like Dirge of Cerberous however show that Square isn't ashamed of raking in the cash with a piece of tripe so scepticism should still be at hand.
Hopefully FFTA2 will learn from its mistakes. I personally felt the Law system wasn't all as bad as everyone makes out. It was quite strategic at times but would, i admit, more often than not completely shut down your team.
A remake of FFT could be good if it is indeed a remake and not a port. Slightly beefed up graphics, an easier to navigate menu system (so many pages to flip through), needed bug fixes and a much improved translation will be the orders of the day. The remakes of FFIII-V have been quite impressive with upgrades keeping ahold of the charm that the originals grabbed us with. The PSP is a pretty charmless console, so lets hope Square can overcome that and give us the game we've been waiting for all these years. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I just hope that the DS has enough grunt to make it look like FFT did. It was simple 3d but very effective. Sometimes on FFTA I lost characters behind objects and alot of shots were unnecessarily hard to judge because I couldn't rotate or zoom the map.
The PSP version should be closer to a true FFT sequel, if nothing but for its 3d power. - aahpandasrun, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5I'll be happy for a new Final Fantasy Tactics if they make the story better and get rid of the laws.
The FFT series still pales in comparison to games like Disgaea or Makai Kingdom however - Hindu_Wardrobe, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Yeah, I don't see how you guys hate FFTA. I love this game to death, it's great for killing a few hours on a long road trip with your parents. :P
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@ZenMojo
What about "Advance Wars: Dual Strike"? it retained the 'Advance' in it's title, despite being a DS game.
Simply having 'Advance' in the title isn't evidence that it will not be a DS game. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2uh, and he also created FFTA....
Matsuno won't be critical, there are a lot of intelligent designers out there... - Exodin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Unfortunately the joy everyone is feeling is going to be short lived.
The guy who created Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre/FF12 has left the company. These sequels are just going to be mediocre cash-ins.
To the article: It is not a true blue sequel if it's a sequel to tactics advance. - enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The new tactics on the DS should follow the same gameplay as the original FFT. Drop the silly laws and bring back the old class system. To make it better they should add more classes and perhaps some more combat options. The advance version was not nearly as good as the original, though it was a decent game.
- Vaynard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Wow, I've just got to say wow. This made me happy enough I felt I had to leave my first comment on here. FFT is still my favorite game of all time, and to hear of it getting any love is enough to make my week. It looks like I might be having to buy a PSP and a DS in the upcoming future.
Only bittersweet piece to this is that the sequel is to FFTA and not FFT. While FFTA was an alright game, nothing approaches FFT. But this still makes me happy. Good story to read! - Xenogis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4FFTA sucked. I don't like games designed for 5 year olds. I was so excited to hear it came out then I went "oh, they tacked the 'advanced' onto the end" whenever a game is remade and has "advanced" on the end it sucks ....
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The laws were a great addition. They were hard to keep track of when they were stacked, like you said, but the limits made it much more challenging. It'd be like playing Resistance then in a difficult level, having everything stripped from you but a handful of hedgehog grenades. It forces you to reevaluate your playing style and work around the limitation.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Thanks for the spoilers!
- BenSerwa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2It's pretty much sealed: Square Enix is back to making games for Nintendo's consoles, aside from FFXIII itself. You can't blame them for putting FFXIII on the PS3, as that system suits it's capabilities as far as ***** awesome graphics are concerned. FFXIII's in-game graphics will look like Advent Children, mark my words.
This is still awesome news for Nintendo fans, though. - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@PowerCat: Darth Vader is Luke's father. Romeo and Juliet both die at the end. Jesus rises from the dead and goes to heaven.
After so many years, you can't really be expected to continue avoiding discussion of core plot elements. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2yea because we need zany anime sequences between battles. I like disgaia, but it's more of a FFT + 500 more hours of sidequests and useless time wasters...
- john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1caps lock, idiot.
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7They are taking care of the load times....but releasing it for the DS.
- dagooh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I didn't mind the laws so much (you could always work around them, just one time in the entire 20+ hours that I dedicated to that game I found a law that was broken for my entire party), that game was a lot of fun to me, I'm looking forward for a sequel.
- aweraw, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"FFXIII's in-game graphics will look like Advent Children"
The cut-scene pre-rendered videos, yes, that's totally feasible... the in-game 3d models? Not a chance; the Cell processor is powerful, but no where near that powerful.
Do you have any idea how long it takes to render those kinds of CGI graphics? A single frame can take hours to render - on a 100 CPU cluster. - contradictator, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yanno, I would much rather the new game strike a balance between both previous Tactics games, while still bringing some fresh new ideas to the table.
I liked both games. They both had their pros: Tactics was deep and intriguing, Advance was light-hearted, simple and the frustrating but cool "law" system.
Both can also be considered cons, cuz while Advance may have been "kiddy" and stripped down, Tactics had a confusing, sometimes melodramatic plot and added micro-management elements that barely impacted the gameplay at all (yeah, Zodiac signs are cool, but come on folks).
Honestly, I understand everyone has their preference, but this looks way too much like the Wind Waker/Ocarina Of Time debate. Some games are MEANT to be kiddy, it makes it more fun, more accessible. Some of the most addictive games in history are light-hearted like that: Pokemon, Kirby, Monkeyball, Pikimin, Katamari... The list goes on. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Let's hope they fix the following for the PSP port:
-God-awful translation (Altima?!?)
-Multi-staged battles where if you saved in the middle and you couldn't complete all of the battles, you were pretty much hosed and had to restart.
-Disappearing characters.
-Being completely unplayable (the 2001 re-release). - thefaithful, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Where is our new Vagrant Story game in this whole "Ivalice Alliance" deal?!
- thomasthecat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2*****. Yes.
