Ouch at the PS3 number. Getting outsold by the GBA? I'll wait for the usual Sony spin. - SGagnon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33GawtMilk, are we reading the same numbers? What I'm reading is the DS sold 485,000 units while the PSP sold 176,000 units. May be your fanboy eyes reversed the two numbers somehow?
- dime, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34"It's not released in Europe. There's reality's spin. There have been more than one and a half million Wii sales in Europe."
Miss the part on the page that says "North American Chart for the Month of February 2007", *****? - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Wow, NeoGeoColors are still being sold?
- DurkaMcDurk, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28maybe all the "fanboys" that were waiting for the PS3 realized it's a huge piece of *****...
- SGagnon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+23Looks like lots of people wanted the Halo3 beta invitation that was included with Crackdown :-o
- skywake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22wait... did GawtMilk just say that the PSP was outselling the DS?
and to justify that comment he replied with "in Japan"?
wait... what?
if anything the DS is doing best against the PSP in Japan

360 NBA STREET HOMECOURT 102k - chembro84, on 10/12/2007, -5/+20I am actually suprised that the PS3 is being beat by the Xbox 360, I figured the 360 was kind of on it's "Ok I've been out for a year and a half now" slump, but it's still beating the PS3, which should still be riding the "HOLY *****, IT'S NEWWWW!!11!!!" wave.... Hmmm
- miketuck3r, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21People are claiming the PS2 numbers are great but look at it this way... PS3 doing terriblw at present people are not migrating from PS2 to PS3...
So when that 1% of PS2's breaks each month (300,000+) what are they doing? buying another..
Its backed up by the pretty much non existent PS2 games sales in relation to PS2 console sales, are we really meant to believe that new PS2 owners are buying no games with their system? - DurkaMcDurk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19It's funny that the PS3 has no titles in the top 10 software...
- Paroparo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13Dugg for title alone. It's also nice to see the company I'm rooting for doing well for a change. Makes you wonder how much they'll sell when there are actually more than a handful of good games available and or they finally manage to ramp up production.

I dont see how you think the Wii doesn't appeal to traditional gamers, I've been a Nintendo fan since the NES days and their franchises havent changed much. Zelda, Super Paper Mario, Mario Galaxy, Metroid and SSBB are all titles I think traditional gamers would be into and are/will be award winning software. I would say the 360 is a much further departure from traditional console gaming because the bulk of the games on it are first person shooters. Also, the Wii's list of titles may not be all that impressive now but its only been out for a few months, think back to the lame titles that launched with ps1, ps2, xbox, and xbox360 - as their install bases grew so did their list of killer apps and by the looks of things the Wii is gonna have one huge install base. It is true that the Wii is bringing in a lot of new gamers but the old gamers want it too (I just wish I could find one). - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16With the sales discrepancy of the PS3 and Xbox 360, I think it's safe to say that at this rate, the PS3 might actually never catch up to the Xbox 360, if it's STILL being outsold nearly 2-to-1. Even if all Xbox 360 sales just STOP and no one anywhere buys this console anymore, it'll still take over a YEAR (at the current rate) for the PS3 to sell enough units just to MATCH the 360. See, the PS3 isn't even catching up. The 360's lead is actually widening every single month. That, to me, is really shocking, considering how much brand loyalty Sony has with the general public.
The Wii, however, is probably going to win. They're in a different market altogether, though. They attract casual gamers, which greatly outnumber traditional gamers. Their lack of compelling, award-winning software will also hurt them in the eyes of traditional gamers. But there's no doubt that they'll easily sell the most consoles, just because of their broader appeal and a much larger market that Nintendo has managed to tap.
Also, I'm surprised Crackdown is such a huge seller. As far as GTA clones on the 360 go, I thought "Saint's Row" was by far the better game. With Crackdown, it seems like they just stopped designing the game half-way through and said, "Hey, forget the single player campaign and let's just let the user go ape-***** crazy with superpowers." This might be the first time a "mod" was commercially released without being based on any real "game". That's what Crackdown feels like when I play it, at least.
All in all, very surprising statistics all around. - ontain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@ GawtMilk
Europe Launch wouldn't effect NPD numbers. it's for the US only. if we take worldwide numbers the ps3 gets killed worse by the wii. but at least then you could talk about Europe. - DurkaMcDurk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10the company itself was never doing poorly, but their main console was... the GC had a few good games, but it couldn't touch the ps2 or xbox...
The DS is a completely different story... oh i *heart* the DS - Renton, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Actually, the Gamecube sold about as much as the Xbox. The difference was only 2-3 million.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I think it's happening because everyone said that the Wii would be just a fad and never pick up. They counted Nintendo out once the name was finalized, the way the games would be, and the hardware of the Wii was announced. This is just all the people who supported Nintendo shoving it back in the faces of the nonbelievers.
- adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I think it has more to do with the people that acutally saved up and bought one Vs. the kids who got laughed at when they told their parents how much they needed JUST for the system.
"It'll take time untill the big PS3 exclusives start coming, then the sales will pick up. I'd imagine Sony would do a 'relaunch' when their game library is bigger..."
Maybe you haven't been listening but it seems like all the companies that are sony exclusive are starting to jump ship or seriously think about it. Sony HAS to start moving a serious amount of units or they are going to see a lot of the PS only titles ported over to the 360 and Wii. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7@retrocide:
Here's the Sony spin you were waiting for:
"According to NPD data, February 2007 showed a 67% increase in retail dollars generated year-over-year for SCEA in the US with total sales of $377 million. With this increase, the PlayStation brand remained the number-one revenue driver for the month in the industry owning 38.5% of total sales." - loof, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Technically this is an update on how all the consoles are doing, it just happens to state who's winning in the title.
- jellygraph, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7on top of that, the Nintendo DS outsold all total sales on all of Sony's products (PS3, PS2 & PSP) _combined_.
DS - 485,000
PS2 - 295,000
PSP - 176,000
PS3 - 127,000
-----------------------
Sony Total: 439,000
DS - 485,000
Wii - 335,000
GBA - 136,000
NGC - 24,000
-----------------------
Nintendo Total: 980,000
360 - 228,000
------------------------
Microsoft Total: errr... 228,000
Sales ratio is (N) 4.3 : (S) 1.9 : (M) 1
Nintendo sells more than Microsoft and Sony _combined_.
They are totally kicking ass. - jgennoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I think you Sony number is a bit off: 295,000 + 176,000 + 127,000 = 598,000
- ShoulderKnight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Pretty impressive for Crackdown (Or Halo 3 Beta) to push that many units in one week. It's a brilliant game, but I wonder how many units are thanks to Master Chief.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5It's more simple than that, really: MONEY.
If you spend on a PS2, you have less money for a PS3.
If you buy PS2 games, you have less money for PS3 games, which push Blu-Ray.
It's nice to see SONY not dropping the PS2 for those who can't afford something more. Here it may seem silly, but in countries where people still buy rip-offs of the Super MegaDrive system, it's a lot more serious... however, well, it won't make them win the "next-gen wars", that's for sure ... - Omega697, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@loof:

- silenteulogy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well I guess the PS3 is done for. The Wii is the hot new console. The 360 is selling extremely well also and it's software numbers are monumental. With the impending 360 price drop and release of Halo 3 and GTA4 this year, there is no way the PS3 will recover. And before someone says "well GTA4 is coming to the PS3 toooo!!" I'll ask which console are people going to buy to play it, the $300 360 or $600 PS3?
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8The PS3 isn't riding that wave because... It's new, sure, but the 360 has most of the games, and better ones. It's got a bigger library.
The Wii is still riding the 'OH MY GOD SO NEW!' wave, because it's different, and doesn't have something where the games are pretty much identical, except on a cheaper system.
It'll take time untill the big PS3 exclusives start coming, then the sales will pick up. I'd imagine Sony would do a 'relaunch' when their game library is bigger... - opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Some people like sales numbers. - jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4MS is doing great in game sales.
- DeucesWild, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No wonder M$ is hesitant to drop the price on the 360, they seem to be selling well enough as it is for the time being.
- grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3### Saying that the Wii doesn't have any good games except Zelda is completely subjective.
Its not just one gaming magazine that gives Wii games low ratings, but basically all of them. This doesn't mean that the Wii will fail to sell, it just means that the Wii attracts a very different kind of 'gamer' then everything we had in the past. Thats not bad for Nintendo, but I as a gamer am very disappointed with the Wii, instead of bringing innovation in gaming that I actually care about, it brought us games that are so simplistic that grandma can play them. Good for grandma, boring for everybody else. The thing with the Wii is simply that it went to cater to a new audience instead of expanding its already existing one. Good sales don't mean that it does or will ever provide games I care about, just as a million sold Britney Spears CDs don't make good music. - opnickc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"Now mod me down for staying to objective facts..."
Saying that the Wii doesn't have any good games except Zelda is completely subjective. Yes, you did post reviews (and thank you for actually doing so), but historically what the critics think doesn't really affect sales.
Though I agree that the Wii could use some more western titles. I'd love to see Valve make a good shooter for it. I'd also love for developers to actually push the system; I know it's not in the same league as PS3/360, but the Wii is significantly more powerful than the cube. The fact that the games now look like PS2 games (likely because many were ported from said platform) is quite annoying, especially since companies think they can get away with it since "the Wii isn't about graphics". We know the Wii can do better; SMG has motion blur, depth of field, fantastic specular highlights, soft-shadowing, and crisp textures. Let's see some of that in third-party and more realistic games! - silenteulogy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4No Microsoft has been making ~$75 on each 360 for awhile now.
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Nintendo has 4 titles on there, I wouldn't say MS is owning the charts. They have the lead, but not by much. If MS had a handheld system and that was on the charts you'd classify it with MS, why not Nintendo? That darned GH2 snuck in there. But once GH for the 360 comes out, I'm sure there will be another one for MS. I know I will be getting a system and the game when it finally comes out.
- silenteulogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The $499 PS3 is so impossible to find that it has lead to the belief that it has been discontinued. While I don't think it has been actually discontinued yet (keyword), I do think that Sony is not shipping it on purpose because they lose more money on that model.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4ps3 got rolled.
- joey368, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2With a headline like that, how was it able to draw attention?
- burnblue, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You don't actually own a Wii, do you?
- bj00rn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3The story here is not Nintendo but the PS3.
- thekoan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"PS: Now mod me down for staying to objective facts..."
...ha. nah. you're completely subjective, guy. you state that the wii only has zelda... that's your opinion. subjective.
...fact is, the wii's "drought" is a result of third party trepidation in the lead-up to the system launch. that will become less of a factor as third parties see the rapidly increasing sales numbers. i mean, the thing's done more than half what the 360 has in a third of the time. the install base will be there, and the install base-- not system power or hd-capability-- is what encourages developers to spend the money on AAA titles.
...ps3 loses exclusivity on gta, why? install base not big enough to support development. more studios leaning toward development for both big-box consoles, why? 'cause the 360's got the install base to justify the risk and the ps3's got the name clout.
...taking that into account, what do you think the developers are going to do when they see a system that is:
1- cheaper to develop for with a faster development cycle
2- easier to develop for
3- sporting a ~~~steeply~~~ rising install base?
...why, they're gonna put some money behind AAA games for that system. sure, some will be weird, casual-esque games... but you'll get some of the genre-specific stuff you're looking for.
...so, no... you're not modded down for "objective facts"... i'm modding you down because you're just rather myopic on the subject. - Lonecow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I want Nintendo to stay on top for a long time. Not because I'm a fanboy and I want the other two loose, but simply because this means one day maybe a third party developer will pay attention to these numbers and think, even just fleetingly, "Hey maybe I should try and make a decent game for this system instead of porting crap I made for a handheld."
I can dream. - jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sony look at what your arrogance has done...
- levitatingdog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I don't get this whole "my console is better than yours" movement. What a waste of time. Go play it if you love it so much.
- silenteulogy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That and they need to get their 65nm process chips up to speed before they drop the price.

- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@grumbel I have a Wii and PS3 and I agree with what you said. The Wii was really fun around christmas, but hasn't been on in our house for weeks. Meanwhile my PS3 is on at least once a day even if it's just for a quick race on Motorstorm. Secondly as a gamer I like that Sony is pushing the envelope, my Wii controllers are awesome, but the games I have Wario, Zelda, and Monkeyball all feel like more of the same from the gamecube generation.
