- geekfrom99, on 10/11/2007, -25/+139how about the trend that just about every new game can be completed with less and less skill?
games shouldn't be about finishing them anyway. they should be about playing them. infinite continues? bah.
you should earn a finished game not get one by default because you bought it.
anyways, just my two cents
/rant - Junkyarddawg, on 10/11/2007, -38/+143What a rubbish POS list.
- KingMoses, on 10/11/2007, -12/+93This guy's whining about perfect women?
Fine, go see how many copies you sell of "Rosie O'Donnell Face-Stuffing Simulator" - masamunecyrus, on 10/11/2007, -6/+87Where is the "every RPG main character is an unstable emo bastard following FFVII" trend?
- saber134, on 10/11/2007, -13/+88Is it any wonder that the wii is doing so well this year compared to the other "hard-core" gaming consoles? Most people are sick of the same recycled junk. At least nintendo is trying to shake things up rather than build on the same trends that have been going on year after year after year....
- eplawless, on 10/11/2007, -10/+77Burnout 3 was incredibly different from Burnout 1, it really matured and evolved as a series. Sequels can be amazing.
This guy is an idiot. - mrgreen4242, on 10/11/2007, -11/+67I disagree entirely. Many games, especially the good ones, have a story to tell. I want to see that story... would you buy a DVD that didn't show you the end unless you watched 4 hours of test patterns first? You know, to prove how much you wanted to see it.
I actually like the trend of games getting easier, combined with getting a little longer and better stories, and adding optional difficulty levels for those who want "the challenge". - Rooster99, on 10/11/2007, -4/+56Am I the only one who has noticed that out of the mentioned '350' WW2 games that are around, you never get to play as the Nazi's. I know, I know they were *****, but its been over 60 years! Just once I would like to play from the enemies perspective, even if it means getting my ass kicked by the allies.
- mr.wizard, on 10/11/2007, -6/+57If you can't be a "Supersoldier" and you can't be "Regular soldiers" what should you be?
- spidoman, on 10/11/2007, -3/+39It's so stupid to complain about the women in games being too perfect.
Look at the male protagonists that we play. Are Kratos, (women throw themselves at him and he's able to please them with a few simple button presses,) Marcus Fenix, (total badass,) Snake, Link, Gordon Freeman, (a genius and an action hero,) Master Chief, and Spider-Man realistic portrayals of men? No! They have perfectly muscular bodies and are as tough as nails. Guys don't complain about those characters being stereotypical portrayals of the perfect, manly man.
It's called escapism. We like looking at pretty things, because most of the people in the world are ugly. It's the exact same thing that happens on TV. - KuJo6784, on 10/11/2007, -1/+33"A tough-guy private investigator maybe?"
I mis-read that as a tough-guy pirate investigator which sounds like a pretty awesome game in my opinion. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -8/+37Why isn't "Special Editions" in there?
Step up Gears of War, Viva PiƱata, Grand Theft Auto: IV, Halo 3, TMNT, Lost Planet, Need for Speed: Carbon, Perfect Dark Zero.... - dpcdomino, on 10/11/2007, -2/+31Without sequels we would never have seen Final Fantasy VII and GTA3
Sequels are not bad...rehashes are!
I hate the whole 3-D trend. Some games (thinking of Oddworld) are good in 2-D.
I also think the reliance on shiney sparkly graphics to compensate for the lack of gameplay is another trend that needs to stop.... - Jaymoon, on 10/11/2007, -9/+36Seeing as how this biased top 11 list won't mention any Nintendo flaws... I'll give you one.
Games that are nothing but mini-games.
Do we really need another Mario Party? 95% of the mini-games on mini-game-games are crap anyway. WiiSports, WiiPlay, Wario Ware, Monkey Ball, Cooking Mama, Mario Party, etc. Enough! Build a full game already, and cut out the "keeps the ADD kids busy for 2mins until they find something else to do" games. - kevisazombie, on 10/11/2007, -7/+31Gamepro always has, and always will. Suck.
http://gameprotvklassix.ytmnd.com/ - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27A car-jacking, gun-wielding thug. Oh, wait...
A tough-guy private investigator maybe?
OR, radical thought here, maybe there are too many FPS games because there are only so many themes available for them. - rocke86, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Microtransactions should be number 1. Nothing like spending your hard earned cash on a $60 game only to find out it is not complete till you shell out more cash.
Also it wouldn't be a trend since nintendo and sony are not following it, but Microsoft charging you for live is just money grabbing since most of the game hosting is done using our xboxes and bandwidth, and the cost does not cover MMORPGs. - ahawks, on 10/11/2007, -3/+27Nintendo isn't just pushing the front with the Wii. It started with the DS.
People scoffed at the DS. Why in the world would you want a microphone, 2 screens, including a touch screen. Who would want to take their fingers off the buttons and touch anything!?
A few years later and the DS has outsold all the other consoles combined.
Sure, they're gimmicks, but they work. After all, video games started with pong: a ball bouncing left and right on screen. Sounds like a simple gimmick to me. All video games are gimmicks.
The Wii remote is simple, and quite often misused by developers, but given time it has already made it's mark on the gaming scene as something new and unique. Sure as hell beats yet another WWII shooter, or racing game, or skating game. - nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -17/+41I'm not so sure using a lot of buttons is a bad thing. Sure, for some games it would suck, but for the more complicated tactical games, if anything we need more buttons. There are so many actions you can do using only a few buttons would be stupid. I think the PS3/360 controllers are pretty much perfect for tactical games, maybe there could even be another button on each side on the bottom, below the triggers where your middle finger rests. If the 360 controller had another button in a convenient place, no one would be arguing about the Team-Speak (halo 3) controversy because you wouldn't have to take your thumb off of the joystick to talk.
EDIT: Sorry, i didn't mean to click reply and cheat the comments - chaesar, on 10/11/2007, -11/+34@ junkyarddawg
Gimmick controller? You mean the thing that completely changes the way you play a video game? Sorry if you have to stand up once in a while, fatcakes. - mookiemookie, on 10/11/2007, -1/+24How about games that are knowingly shipped with major bugs, with the attitude of "oh we'll patch it later....maybe"
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -2/+24Is that the hidden bonus level for Cake Mania?
- psbpv3o, on 10/11/2007, -9/+30Oddly enough, I completely agree with this list. I never thought I would say it but I'm tired of supersoldiers kicking ass and hot ninja girls. It's become wayyyy to familiar and I think we should move on to something more original....
- JurneyAhed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20RE4 also had good looking men as the heroes, so I don't see what their point by singling out women is.
- flave, on 10/11/2007, -0/+19Why did they rag on GTA for using a licensed soundtrack? That's one of the best ways those games set the mood. Can you imagine Vice City without the 80's cheese spilling through the radio? It was perfect. I agree that in many cases licensed soundtracks are lame, but GTA games are the perfect fit for it. Plus, they use it to spoof the time period as well.
- unusualbob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+22anyone notice that they used a screen from Killzone in the 'Regular Soldiers' item, but didn't list them as an offender?
- chalkboy, on 10/11/2007, -5/+23@psbpv3o (#6868584)
Because it is a game. You are getting shot and fighting some demon spawn. You want the women to be more realistic but don't mind getting shot 200 times and not dieing. It is a game it does not have to be realistic. All the guys in games are big buff dudes unless it is FF game then they look like a girl. But people do not have a problem with that. - fuzzboxer, on 10/11/2007, -6/+23This list is lame. You can apply this to any year.
- xerus, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Seriously. Special Editions are just another way for companies to nickel and dime gamers, who apparently don't mind shovelling money down the throats of these companies without question.
- jonohull, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17They did mention it, with the Halo "special" helmet.
- psbpv3o, on 10/11/2007, -9/+23Why can't we just have more realistic women?
- 43percentburnt, on 10/11/2007, -2/+16"It would just be nice if our culture embraced extra fresh ideas from time to time (nudge, nudge, developers)"
like warioware, cooking mama, loco roco, katamari damacy, ico, etc.? not every game that is released is going to be groundbreaking and innovative. nor is every album, book, or movie for that matter. - crila, on 10/11/2007, -7/+20#1 worst trend online...
1. lists of peoples ***** opinions
this list sucks bad. oh i cant remember all of the buttons. you are stupid. oh i dont like hot chicks in games. you're retarded. halo and gta are played out. um what blockbuster games have you made lately.
quit your bitchin'. - spoonie11, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Why can't we just have more realistic women?
Cuz they'd just nag us about playing video games too much and make us turn the game off, that's why.
DUH! - WoodenKimono, on 10/11/2007, -8/+19Honestly, this list is much better as a top ten. That #11 is really inaccurate. Those woman aren't prefect, they are all wearing clothes.
- mcraigw, on 10/11/2007, -11/+22
I play video games to escape reality. If I want realistic women, I go see my wife, or for you, you could go see your mom... - donnyburnside, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13"1. lists of peoples ***** opinions"
Couldn't agree more. - bIuebonics, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9who whoever came up with the konami code was just being lazy?
- proxima, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11If you don't want the special edition, don't buy it. They really do not detract at all from the actual game, and some people actually like the bonus goods that come with one.
- Harbz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I think it depends on the genre. Ex. If Final Fantasy started requiring you to be lvl 99 before you can see the final, glorious FMV scene, I would be pissssssssed.
- Bullsnot, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8"according to the article, you should be a teenage girl"
But you have to be an ugly one. - TheUngod, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Wait...Rosie was in a game that sold plenty. Ever play Dungeon Keeper? Remember the Bile Demons?
- Topher06, on 10/11/2007, -5/+13What a dumb rant. I paid $70 for a game, I can't stand it when I get 1/3 through it and the boss fight is super crazy hard and I have to do it 16 times to advance to the next section and scales the difficulty up by a factor of 3. Nothing ruins a game like not ramping up difficulty properly. Its a problem with many games that they are either too easy, or too difficult, game developers don't seem to know how to do it right.
Bottom line is, if you paid for the game, there should be something in the game that allows you to finish it, whether its setting the difficulty mode or finding that easter egg that sets God mode or whatever. I can't stand stupid debates about "cheats". If you don't want to cheat in a game, don't. If your a good enough gamer to be skilled enough to finish a game on nightmare mode, good for you. But there are more gamers these days that are 30+, have a career, family, you know, a life, so they can't afford to spend 8 hours a day hopped up on Red Bull to 4 am just to get skilled enough to get through a difficult section. I enjoy actually seeing what the game has to offer, you know, all that crazy hyped up graphics that everyone raves about. I paid for it, I want to see it all. Gaming is about entertainment, not whether you can finish the game without using a single health pack or some stupid claim of bravado. I agree that a game that only has one difficulty level that is way to easy doesn't appeal to hard core gamers, but neither does a game that is way too hard appeal to the casual gamers.
What ticks me off more regardless of difficulty are the games that either need 100+ hours to finish, or can be finished in a couple of evenings. I could care less about difficulty if I either have to invest a lifetime to finsih the game, or don't get my moneys worth. Game developers have to target the largest audience, but nobody likes a 100+ hour snore fest or a game that can be finished before you pay your credit card bill.
The bottom line is, a decent game developer will add difficulty modes, and ensure there is at least enough difficulty to appeal to hard core gamers, but then also ensure that there is enough ease for the casual gamer to get their money's worth from a game. If there are no difficulty modes, and the game isn't an online multiplayer game, through in a few cheats, give the average player a chance at least. - arbulus, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think that a large number of games these days don't focus their game play 100% on completions. Look at the Final Fantasy games for example. Yeah, you can beat the game, but experiencing the story is a large part of it, and then once you beat it, you can just keep on playing and tweaking characters, finding secrets that you missed the first time, etc. So even when you do beat it, it's not over. Now, with that said, I do agree that the actual completion of games is getting easier. Keeping with the Final Fantasy example, compare VIII to X and it's a completely different skill level involved. Beating VIII is very difficult if your characters aren't on level 99 with their final weapons, or damned close to it. And getting to that point is no easy task. X is a walk in the park compared to that.
- brufleth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Agreed, the music in Vice City was a huge part of the enjoyment.
- fnaqzna, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8He missed the most damning trend of all.
No one is making anything new. It's just the same game over and over with increasingly better graphics and sound. - BenO169, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7These trends seemed to bag on Company of heroes a lot. Anyone else think that game was spot on?
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10The author complains that women are portrayed as flawless-looking, uzi-toting killing machines. Ummm, aren't men portrayed in exactly the same way? Look at the guys in Crackdown for *****'s sake...who looks like that?
- sexybobo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6@Zgrendel (#6868360)
WW2 is a good game setting. the problem is all fps games have been the same since doom came out with better graphics each time. if you don't believe me go check out Doomsday it is a source port for doom that completely replaces all graphics and makes all models 3d instead of 2d. it is still the same game but with a modern skin on it. then compare it to almost any other fps game.
The world war 2 fps i am waiting for is a mmofps wont be fun till you have a team of 30thousand people on your team. and having to guard your land so the enemy wont take it. - dasilva333, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8in regards to #1 i think that trend is associated with the fact that a majority of guys buy video games, and a study that was posted on digg shows that men unlike female take pleasure just from looking at the female form even if it isn't sexual
