- cygnus183, on 10/12/2007, -21/+120whole heartedly agree. the lack of HD-DVD and wifi is inexcusable.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+87Its not just that....the add-ons are just so god damned expensive!
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -9/+75While I agree with not-including HD-DVD, wireless is very important and becoming a standard in many consumer electronics. What is wrong with having the option to use wireless? If you are getting lag in online games the bottleneck is probably with your ISP connection, not the wireless. 802.11g runs at speeds up to 54 Mpbs while cable internet runs up to 30 Mbps and DSL at about 10 Mbps. While these technologies will rarely run at these optimal speeds, your wireless will almost always be a faster connection to the computer than your ISP connection. ANd with 802.11n becoming a standard the difference in speed becomes even larger.
I would much rather have built-in wifi than have to run a Cat5 cable from my computer/office area to my entertainment center (which for many people are in two different rooms) for the lifetime of the console.
The lack of HDMI 1.3 is almost just as bad. - doug_brit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+70$180 for 120gigs, give me a break.
- StingerMS, on 10/12/2007, -7/+62"2. It's still cheaper than the PS3. Cheap is a good thing. But for something to be considered "Elite," in theory it should probably also be the most expensive product on the market."
That's a pretty dumb thing to say. Just because something is more expensive doesn't mean it's better. - Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -23/+75Wait, wait, wait... they think it being cheaper than a PS3 is a BAD thing? What the hell?
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+50It should have come with a 133.7 GB hard drive.
- Kdog22, on 10/12/2007, -8/+32I wonder if Microsoft,, is going to have umpteen different versions of the 360.. like the bazillion different versions of vista...
Microsoft reasoning... not good enough make another version... - rockforever, on 10/12/2007, -5/+25@sandwiches
As best I can explain it. When the unassuming guy with money to blow walks into best buy and sees two game consoles he knows nothing about and asks himself, "Which is the best." He'll say, "must be the most expensive one." While that is some odd reasoning I do agree with the second point in that paragraph, the price gap just closed by a pretty big margin. 40% or so. If your not the SUPER Inexpensive model, i.e. the Wii, or not the Big Expensive Luxury Item, i.e. The PS3, your the middle child.
@Lukewind
They're not really pushing the HD-DVD thing because they still offer 2 model's without that addon. Remember this is supposed to be the ELITE. To me that means with ALL the bells and whistles. 54Mbps is more than enough to play ANY game without ANY hiccups. Its all about being the All encompassing model. MS just kinda half assed it with this one. - superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23The reason Microsoft is not interesting in including HD-DVD is less about Blu-Ray, and more about Microsoft figuring they are WAY better off if 360 owners are getting all HD media from Live. They are dropping HD-DVD because they want total domination of online media, where they think all sales are going - they have even said they think HD-DVD is the last physical format we will see.
Myself, I think there is still a place for a 50GB disc of data in a world where our broadband conenctions are still so pitiful. - coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26I think the craziest thing about this whole development is that all the Elite gives you is a bigger hard drive but falls short in a bunch of other sectors (sectors that are admittedly optional to gaming for the most part) but you're still paying just under $100 less than the PS3. It's crazy what good PR can buy you because I've really heard a minimal amount of bitching as opposed to the big stink that was raised about even the lower priced PS3.
- nbcivic, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16i agree, even the wii, the cheapest and least complex of all of these systems, can connect to my home network wirelessly.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+17"2. It's still cheaper than the PS3. Cheap is a good thing. But for something to be considered "Elite," in theory it should probably also be the most expensive product on the market."
PS3 with wireless and HD disc = $600
Xbox 360 Elite with wireless and HD disc = $779 - elvenseven, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Wait till you learn marketing.
- DanaLL, on 10/12/2007, -16/+29It is the most expensive console by a huge amount:
480 for the Xbox 360 'Elite' unit itself
250 dollars for online play over five years at 50 dollars a year
And that's not including things like:
200 HD-DVD addon
100 Wifi addon
Someone who buys the 360 Elite is paying 730 bucks for their system. And that's before you start adding on other peripherals. - xjgeek, on 10/12/2007, -10/+22I completely agree that the "elite" makes absolutely NO sense and it is just another lame ass attempt from M$ to extract more money from its customers. All of this "elite" ***** is just one of the many reasons that I sold my 360 and bought a PS3! Yeah, I said it. My 360 was great but when if I was gonna upgrade, it was gonna be a TRUE upgrade. So, I got my PS3 and I love it! It does need some firmware upgrade lovin', but so did my 360.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14This is even more inexcusable than the HD-DVD drive:
"5. It will still be really loud. By not including a more efficient, cooler-running 65 nanometer processor, we assume the Elite will continue to pump out an irritating racket when turned on, primarily due to its noisy cooling fan. Usually, loud-running consumer electronics are more akin to discount products, not the high-class "elite" as the name implies. This will totally ruin our experience while we drink Cristal and listen to Vivaldi (yes, we're audio snobs)."
Here I was assuming the Elite *was* getting the 65nm chip. When exactly do they get them? - DanaLL, on 10/12/2007, -8/+20No upgradeable harddrive - you are stuck with the packaged harddrive - unless Microsoft decides to come out eventually with another 'twice as expensive as retail' drive upgrade.
No HDMI 1.3 - all the cool highend audio features and video features like deep colour aren't supported
Same hardware as the currently defective 360 models - no 65nm or other hardware upgrades
No next gen movie format like BluRay or HD-DVD - Microsoft appears to be giving up on the HD-DVD 200 dollar addon
At 480 dollars + 50 dollars every year just to be allowed to play online games(250 dollars over five years) + the insane peripherial prices you are paying close to a couple hundred dollars more for the same old Xbox 360 with a bigger harddrive and and different connector versus a 600 dollar PS3 with BluRay,HDMI 1.3, freely upgradeable harddrives, free online play with dedicated servers, Wifi, cheap usb off the shelf peripherial support. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13It's just a name guys, don't go nuts over the 'elite' branding of it. BTW im not defending it, I would still buy the Premium over it
- Shuk, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Wait... its not gonna be quieter!? I thought this was the system that would come with the 45nm chip that makes it run cooler and avoid rings of death. When is that coming out?
- iRoy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Like what, elephants?
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11Weird. I didn't even realize the original 360 didn't come with wi-fi built in. Why would MS leave it out in a new model coming out in 2007?
- AntidoteSqrd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Some of the points made are pretty insignificant, "White is the new black", come on! That's not important, but I do agree that the lack of HD and wifi is pretty bad. Whatever, my premium system works fine for me.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Britney Spears concerts sell out too. This fact proves nothing regarding the quality of the content.
- Barnolde, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11#1 reason: It's the same crappy hardware!
The system doesn't have the cooler 65nm inside it and thus is just as unreliable as previous systems.
No wi-fi is just salt in the wound. - lockedon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+128. The machine isn't intended for gamers. ?
What about the gamer that likes media? Therefore he can have both media and games. - Aynatix, on 10/12/2007, -8/+15Well I have not bought a xbox360 yet.
I own a HDTV with DVI, so I was kinda upset that the first 360's didnt come with HDMI. Still I was gonna buy a 360.. it was just a matter of time. Figured I had until Halo3 comes out, then it would be must. Now this elite hits and is directed specifically for my market? You know people without the box and wanting HDMI. So it works out great, I am happy. 360Elite is "ELITE" to me. - atienza2, on 10/12/2007, -6/+12They should have written "Xbox 360 1337" to confuse the masses.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Actually it's almost four million sold now (worldwide)
- Kola, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Tell that to apple.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8"It should have come with a 133.7 GB hard drive."
That costs $1337 if you buy it separately. - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Apparently, those of you who don't think "real" gamers use WiFi either have a cable modem right next to your console or you don't mind stretching out 50-100 feet of ehternet cord just to see who in your friends list is online.
So you all pay an extra few bucks for the built-in WiFi adapter that you know you'd take advantage of, what would be the big deal in that? Having both the PS3 and the 360, I tell you I use my PS3 a lot more just because I don't have to untangle and stretch out my long-ass cord (then worry about someone tripping over the cord and yanking my console to the floor...that's never pretty).
From what I gather, the big difference (other than the outside color) is the addition of the larger hard drive...what's the point? - WileEPeyote, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@nbcivic
Usually it isn't a problem, but once in a while mine makes a noise like a turbine firing up and keeps doing it for about 5 minutes, forget about watching a DVD with it. I don't mind not watching movies on it though, cause I bought it to play games... - Ajajadude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Does that announcement come with a coupon for a free 100 ft. ethernet cable?
- Philodox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I'm in the same boat. Although I'm still having a hard time deciding between it and a PS3. The content sucks on the PS3 right now but I know there are exclusives coming down the pipe that will make me buy one.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6They really should have put everything in the box and just made it $600. Everything... the bigger HD, wifi, HDDVD, and all the other stuff (wireless controller, headset, component and HDMI cables). They could have had a really nice product line then. A direct competitor to the PS3 at $600 (they'd have very similar feature sets, and MS would have a small edge with bigger HDD and free HD cables in the box). A direct competitor to the Wii with the Core at $300 - a little more expensive but at least it's available! And a nice middle ground with the Premium system at $400 for those who want a bit more feature and tech wise than a Wii has, but don't want to spend $600 on an HD movie player.
They could have then switched the upper two models to the 65nm CPU (at some point) and price dropped the Core to $200-250 to really put some squeeze on Nintendo. People would buy the Core at $200 even if it was louder/hotter, I think. - smitty22, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The author's main point seemed to be that the Elite is designed to be a slightly better multi-media machine (larger HD, HDMI) that does next to nothing to enhance the gaming experience and I'm inclined to agree with him. I came to the conclusion that this machine wouldn't help my gaming experience about two days after I first considered buying it. Yeah, the black box would be nice, but I would want the 360 to run cooler & quieter before it really became a consideration for purchase.
Honestly, my money would be best spent either saving for a PS3 or plopping down a pittance on a PS2 so I can play the 5 or so exclusives that interest me on the PS consoles. While the $250 trade in offer makes for a strong incentive, MS's admitted lack of a solution for porting saves, etc... from one box to another makes it more of a hassle than it's worth. - ffejrey, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10"4. The current 10 million 360 owners are getting the shaft. - This is like saying we shouldn't come out with new cars because people who bought last year's model are getting the shaft."
Consoles aren't cars...I don't remember the last time a console received such an upgrade as this.
"5. It will still be really loud. - Including the 65nm processor would have been nice, but if this keeps the cost down, I'm fine with it."
What a lame excuse for not putting in a cooler running CPU so they don't overhead all the time. (I had 2 of them overheat)
"6. No HD-DVD bundle. - This should not be included... it would drive the price up way too high."
But it would make it "Elite." The whole point of this article
This article is spot on. But there are too many fanboys here for it to get any diggs. - hyperden, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5PLEASE MICROSOFT: Install fans that do not make so much noise!. The Playstation 3 is way quieter then the 360, almost as quiet as the orginal xbox. I really hope they have done something about the noise when it is released. Otherwise I am buying an older 360 and installing some better fans myself.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4@wileepeyote I agree that it's not much money but it's enough to keep over 50% of X360 customers from using Live. So what does that mean?? It means if you buy a X360 there is a pretty good chance that your friends still won't be online. And that is the big factor. With PS3 everyone is online because it's free.
- kingmoffa, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6"5.
This is what puts me off the xbox period.
If the ps3 is quiet (I've yet to see one) I may go for it - linux support allows MythTV frontend - hyperden, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In addition fix the CD DVD drive as well to reduce the noise.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Xbox Signature Edition! Just like Elite, but is signed by Peter Moore!
http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Ultimate-Numbered-Signature/dp/B000M2WPIQ/ref=pd_bbs_6/002-3308317-2020054?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1177037498&sr=8-6 - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Yeah. HOW DARE PEOPLE WRITE ABOUT THEIR OPINIONS. That is ridiculous and must be stopped.
- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@fallenomen No games?? PS3 already has the best fighting games, and the best racing games on the market. PS3 also has the largest back library of games available, many of which are classics and can be found for less than $19. Meanwhile X360 hasn't had a big hit title come out since November.
And yes PS3 is much quiter, X360 is a turd in build quality. - DollaDollaBill, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5probably cause all the xbox fans are now giving the same excuses as the PS3 fan were when the PS3 was called expensive. talk about role reversal.
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2im supprised that Danall got dugg up for his fairly baised post.
HD-DvD drive is not really worth it
WiFi is really kinda pointless to buy that adaptor, if i was going to blow $100 on a wireless capability for my console i would buy a Linksys N router and use that as a gateway point so i can stream HDTV to my 360 rather than buy that little piece of garbage that Microsoft offers.
$250 for 5 years of online gaming eh? ok you can include that, but honestly you are paying for lag-free games and a much improved online experience. i blow MUCH more than $250 in coffee or soda or candy individually. but if you are scraping for money there is always the XBL Silver.. which is free.
so essentially its $480 for the console... $630 if you want lag-free online gaming, or $580 if you want to stream HD-TV to your 360 over your network wirelessly.
compared to what the PS3 is offering in comparison:
Lag filled games (whats that? developer provided servers and matchmaking? they go offline if the game sells poorly or a sequel comes out? so sad)
Internet gaming disconnects
wireless G built in (no N, so you can really only stream SDTV, not HDTV)
lack of any kind of community (Home looks OK, but looks like alot of work for something you do instantly on the 360) - dandonia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3im shocked that they are releasing the elite without the hd-dvd drive with it. Most the improvements made are for multimedia yet they left the next gen player out. Seems like a bad idea. I dont mind buying a ps3 at 600 because its blu ray dvd is worth that alone + a better standard of hdmi (dont really care about that) and a kick ass gaming rig. But why shell out for the elite - oooohhh a bigger hdd for 500 notes you can pick up about 3tb of external hdds n i presume most people that can download from xbox live have a pc so why not save the money. then stream to the 360.
- Ender008, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9What I find interesting is that every pro-xbox comment that I've seen so far has been dugg down...am I the only one that finds that a bit strange?
The article seemed pretty damn biased too...
And what's this about no wireless internet? I think people need to research more, I run live off my wireless adapter and it works perfectly fine. It seems that the fanboys have their pitchforks... - omgJOHN, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6While I don't like the Elite myself, most of the points raised in this article are just friggen stupid. I could think of better arguments on why the elite is no good.
1. Three systems is two too many, this I agree on.
2. This is retarded. Since when is cheaper a bad thing?
3. Wireless should have been included. Agreed.
4. So the 10 million users should have just waited for the elite to come out? They made their choice to get it early on. I got a 360 a month before this was announced. I don't regret it one bit. I would have had to wait several months to get the elite, and I wanted to play Gears of War damnit.
5. The DVD drive is whats loud you dolt, and a firmware upgrade may be coming out that fixes that.
6. HD-DVD is an unproven format. Why spend the extra money on it when it may be dropped all together in a year or two.
7. Who the hell cares that much about the color? Really now?
8. Oh no! Microsoft is trying to market to a different crowd! How dare they try and make money off their system!
I do love my 360, but I think the elite is going to be a total waste. It's a damn shame really, it could have had such potential but it was wasted away ... just not the reasons the article listed. -
