- mrfreeziexp, on 10/11/2007, -47/+24No, this doesn't mean the PS3 is a failure...
- ajrahim, on 10/11/2007, -13/+73It only "implies" it...
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -15/+28Really; I rather thought it did.
- bigbadgoat, on 10/11/2007, -37/+15Actually, it doesn't. I don't know of any console that can be considered a failure after 8 months.
You wont be able to consider it a failure for at least a couple years.
There is no reason to think that Sony will continue to enhance the functionality of the PS3 leaps and bounds above its capabilities now. Look at how the PSP has grown, look at how much it can do now compared to when it was released, and thats just Sony's sidekick console. The PS3 is very powerful, and very capable of doing a lot of things. No one besides a handful of companies even know what the true abilities of the CELL processor is, who knows what kind of rendering and graphics enhancement chips they have on the console but have not yet opened for use in the dev kits. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't sony intend on using the CELL as the graphics processor of the PS3 and only within the last 18 months of development decided to hand the duties to the RSX? Maybe the CELL can share the graphics duties with the RSX and churn out graphics that will blow our minds, along with ultra realistic physics. I don't know, but you guys don't know either. You guys can analyze all you want, experts or otherwise. Very few people know the CELL inside and out and even fewer of those work for Sony.
Christ, all you anti-PS3 people are really jumping the gun on this one. You say the system doesn't have a AAA game, yet you're willing to write it off before anything is released that even remotely demonstrates the systems abilities. Sure, when Final fantasy XIII, MGS4, Lair, Heavenly Sword, Home, Warhawk, Ratchet and Clank, Gran Turismo 5 and LittleBigPlanet hit in 8-10 months (which covers premiere games in most every category on the console, since, arguably, Resistance, F1 and Tekken are premiere FPS, racing and fighting games) and sales don't dramatically improve THEN you can call it a failure, but not before. If that happens, I will call it a failure myself!
Why does everyone have to be a ***** sensationalist? Until the big games hit, until online really gets the ball rolling, get the sand out of your vaginas and enjoy whatever ***** console you got! Sony aren't a bunch of idiots, the PS1 and PS2's success wasn't by accident. They took a huge risk with this console, right now it's sales are not as favorable as most expected, but you guys are fools if you expect this trend to continue. - LordofChaosIori, on 10/11/2007, -25/+2In other news, the Nintendo Revolution controller with be motion-sensitive!

- gDubz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+19Heh, I'm taking a course in Game Dev and the teacher mentionned this today. It's interesting that eveytime Sony ***** something up since he started, he was blamed for it. Also that his retirement was more or less asked for by Sony, it wasn't his intention.
- nextag82, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13i'm either way on this.....but we need the PS3 to still be comeptitive and drive good gaming and prices ( except right now for that $600 price tag ). If there was only 1 player in the market they would hold a monopoly, and hwo knows how much games, accessories, and online capabilites would cost.
- IamBobX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+13You know it's funny how Corporations won't let anyone fail. No matter how many good things you do, one screw up and you're generally gone. Remember the guy who make New Coke? He got fired. After years of Coke getting pwned by Pepsi and no one giving any new ideas, they hired him back. He's now the CEO.
- Samus, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16they censored the video where he walks out the back door and falls on his sword.
- rm999, on 10/11/2007, -7/+15With blu-ray set to win the next-gen wars, it is hard to deny the PS3 had something to do with this. Dominance in the Blu-ray market may be worth enough to Sony that they won't perceive the PS3 as a complete failure.
But as others in the thread have mentioned (and been dugg down, for some reason), it is too early to tell. - fauxXenophanes, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8I'm with nextag, more consoles = more competition and choices for the consumer.

PS3 "failed" because of media and anti-Sony sentiments. I, personally, don't want the PS3 to "fail" so that competition will keep gameplay and innovation on the consumer's side.
- DiggerPlease, on 10/11/2007, -4/+7The PS3 probably only sold a "little less" than the Wii simply because it's still near impossible to find one. If they compared the rate of how long each console sits on the shelves it would be a different story.
I'm all for console competition and hope the PS3 does well, actually. It just sucks that the damned thing is $600 when its nearest competition is $400. - Wiinii, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3"defend its dominance in the video game industry"

It's news to me - CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -7/+5I could of sworn he stepped down a couple of months ago.. I also could have sworn that GTA IV exclusive DLC was announced well over a year ago. Goes to show you how bias digg users are that they regurgitate bad news on the PS3 and digg the hell out of it even know they've heard it before.
- dugbay, on 10/11/2007, -21/+11@bigbadgoat
it sounds like your trying to justify something. Maby you spent $600 and you trying to sell yourself on the fact that the PS3 may very well fail.- bigbadgoat, on 10/11/2007, -16/+26no, I'm tired of this blatant biased fanboyism, I and very happy with my PS3, and look forward to its growth as an entertainment hub.
- AntBing, on 10/11/2007, -11/+15I agree with the goat. I'm happy with my PS3 (it doesn't mean I couldn't be happier) and I am excited to see what Sony and the PS3 has in store for the future.
- CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11I love my ps3 and if for some unforeseen reason it breaks(since it wont break on its own like the 360... I don't know a yeti busts in through my window and has intercourse with it) I would buy it again.
- DiggerPlease, on 10/11/2007, -7/+3I love my Xbox 360 and don't really want a PS3, but Home and Little Big Planet look awesome. In regards to the PS3 and PSP... I wish Sony focused more on getting good games out the door than trying to push stupid movie formats that make the things cost so much.
- Xeth, on 10/11/2007, -2/+17He was effectively out when he stepped down as CEO months ago. How he's just off the board which was expected and inevitable. Lots of CEOs get fired that way: CEO->Board->Gone.

Tell that to the Jaguar, Sega Saturn, 3DO, and Dreamcast. They all had a very short lifespan in retrospect.- StingerMS, on 10/11/2007, -4/+17What are you TALKING about?! The Dreamcast is still alive and kickin' today!
- bigbadgoat, on 10/11/2007, -2/+12If it wasn't for Sega's complete lack of marketing, it would have done very well for itself. I still play my Dreamcast on a fairly regular basis, great console, great games. The Dreamcast sold very well before the PS2 came slumping out of the gates.
"what?"
If memory serves me correctly, the PS1 and PS2 had very slow starts, slower than the PS3 in fact. - Hobofuzz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4The Dreamcast had a few new games released for it a couple of months ago. It is in no way dead.

- ryannerd, on 10/11/2007, -3/+6For some reason I keep singing the parody: "How to kill your brand"
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -1/+20Ken Kutaragi is kind of a two part story.
Part I: how to change an industry and most one of the most successful products in history, generating billions of sales that, at one point, supplied your company with over half of its revenue.
Part II: how to piss it all away by being an arrogant ass.
I saw when Part II came to be, when Microsoft announced the Xbox at E3, and there was a three way interview between the Microsoft guy, the former US president of Nintendo, and Ken. Ken sat back and basically said "Well, the PS2 is the #1 selling console ever, so it's left to you two to fight it out for second place." And he gave this big old smirk.
And half of me went "Well, you are right." And the other half went "What an ass."
So, like Nintendo and Steve Jobs and others, he started well, rose high, then acted like an ass and karma just bit him in the ass. Steve Jobs went to Next, blew millions on a failed project, became humiliated, and came back wiser and better for it. Nintendo fell, lost some respect, but they've come back better than before.
Will Ken? I don't know, but I hope he takes some time out, thinks about why he failed, and comes back better than ever. I guess we'll have to see.- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I wouldnt say that Steve blew millions (as in it was a total loss), Apple bought next, and Next became OS X essentially.
Check out this demo of NextStep. It is very similar to the beginnings of OS X
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j02b8Fuz73A
I wouldnt call it a loss, I'd call it research for OS X before Apple bought it. And Steve wasn't a wayward son who left Apple then came to his senses and then came back. It was Apple who was suffering horribly and then asked him back and he lead the company to what they are today. - amish, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2man...i love the way he replied...very funny and very accurate too :)
- johnhummel, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6thinkbox: Check out "The Second Coming of Steve Jobs" - he sank a lot of money into his "research project", and actually it was Pixar that put him back on the map. Maybe Apple would have called him back anyway, but with Next going bankrupt, Pixar proved he could still manage a company.
The truth is probably more in the middle, but Steve pretty much screwed up at Next as far as the financial were concerned, even if the tech was great.
- ThinkBox, on 10/11/2007, -2/+4I wouldnt say that Steve blew millions (as in it was a total loss), Apple bought next, and Next became OS X essentially.
- killbot13, on 10/11/2007, -8/+2Good riddance! I always hated him.
Maybe now the PS3 user base will grow, because even though I like the XBox 360 I don't want Microsoft to be a dominate leader. They are already overcharging for some things. And Microsoft needs to be kept in check, otherwise things like charging $200+ for Windows happens.- christian689, on 10/11/2007, -8/+3oh because charging $600 for a ps3 is fine!
- ryannerd, on 10/11/2007, -6/+4M$ overcharges for their O/S and everything else because they are M$ and they know they have everyone by the nuts; not because there is zero competition from Sony now that Sony killed their own PlayStation brand.
The Wii is a good console and I am glad that at least one brand innovated, and is seeing success because of it. - CReyes4182, on 10/11/2007, -3/+3Right the ps3 only plays games.. its only a video game console and it doesn't do anything else.
/end sarcasm - killbot13, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I'm just saying that if the PS3 does better then M$ won't overcharge for 360 stuff.
I have likes and dislikes for both systems. But lets face it, M$ is known for overcharging. (Monopoly lawsuits in the 90's)
- westers47, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3I knew this was going to happen. Putting blue ray technology in a cosole is what did it. Blue ray raised the price too much and it was not really needed. Its dumb to make every one buy a part of technology that is expensive and most people wont use. Im glad im a xbox 360 person and not a ps3 person. At least microsft has its HD DVD drive as an oppotional add on.
- 13tongimp, on 10/11/2007, -9/+8People who bash Ken Kutaragi are uniformed, short-sighted fanboy morons.
They guy designed the SPC700 sound chip for the SNES that paved the way for some of the greatest soundtracks in video game history. That alone should garner your praise and respect, but no...you'd rather focus on the PS3 because you are just that stupid. Read a little bit more about video game history and you'll find out the he was much more than that.- Dymphna, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4fanboys (especially anti-sony fanboys) on digg? No, say it isn't so! - 1ofMany, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2@ 13tongimp

What I don't ***** understand is this: Everyone claims that Digg is FULL of Apple fanboys...So where the ***** are all these Microsoft fanboys coming from? If "dominance in the video game industry" were a train, Sony would be that guy that wakes up and realizes "oh no, my train left 30 minutes ago" - razorsharp, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2I think a lot of people forget that Kutagari was already moved out of the game division and he came back to work on the PSP and PS3. Kutagari excels as an engineer, not a businessman, so from here on Kaz would probably do a lot better job. I'm glad Kutagari ran up the costs on the PS3 despite pissing off Stringer. The PS3 is ridiculously feature-rich, and you know Sony's losing a bunch of money on each unit sold. But manufacturing their own hardware allows this to only be a temporary problem, and it's PS3 owners such as myself that reap the rewards.
- mos6507, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4If he excels so much as an engineer why do PS3 games not look that much better than the XBOX360 despite the much-hyped Cell processor? The cell is turning out to be an architectural failure as far as it not really pushing the envelope.
