Far Cry 2 single player could last 25 hours, No 100 hours!
joystiq.com — Players looking forward to shooting their way through Far Cry 2's 50-square kilometers of African wilderness best set aside the better part of a few weeks (at least!) to do so. Varying reports suggest it could take as long as 100 hours (for compass-be-damned wanderers, no doubt) to complete the game's single player campaign alone.

On another note, is that hellboy in the picture? WTF?- Terr01, on 05/30/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I think someone picked the wrong picture.
- dullnation, on 05/31/2008, -0/+11It's probably the one digg decided on. They really should make it default to select no picture at all because people don't choose relevant ones..
- BoonTobias, on 05/31/2008, -4/+1almost sort of like they know whose account to ban

- JettaMan, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I'll only spend 100 hours in a game if it has the kind of depth that Oblivion had. I ain't spending 100 hours doing the same running and gunning over and over again. I don't care if the next fortress looks slightly different than the last, or the next bad guy is wearing a different colored shirt. The game needs extreme variety and extreme depth to hold someone's attention for 100 hours.
- Terr01, on 05/30/2008, -0/+8Yeah, I think someone picked the wrong picture.
- Terr01, on 05/30/2008, -4/+11Now if only this time they gave it a real plot and story.
I was rather underwhelmed by the first game. It has like... what, one big plot twist and everything else was contrived "fight to get over there" situations.- trutek, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1the first FC had a ***** plot, i'll give you that. but multiplayer was the ***** on that game. the bigger the board the better for FPS multiplayer.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1They're eliminating all Sci-Fi elements from this game, although I actually liked the plot from the first game.

- Homerr, on 05/30/2008, -1/+103But on a high note, at 8 fps it will seem longer.
- t0x2c, on 05/31/2008, -5/+2Well remember one of the best things about Far Cry was that it could be played on almost anything. We all know Crysis is a beast, but who's to say Far Cry 2 won't be designed like the original Far Cry was?
- Dylson, on 05/31/2008, -5/+5Because it uses the EXACT same engine Crysis does.
- Stevethegreat, on 05/31/2008, -1/+5No it does not, Ubisoft made their own engine. The Cry-Engine 2 (Crysis's engine) would never work in consoles admirably (you would have to lower the graphics to the equivalent of medium settings, which is -by itself- nothing spectacular, many games already have better graphics on consoles).
- t0x2c, on 06/08/2008, -0/+1Oh great I get buried because you don't know what you're talking about, just how to manipulate the masses.
- Dylson, on 05/31/2008, -5/+5Because it uses the EXACT same engine Crysis does.
- googooly, on 05/31/2008, -0/+8thank god i wasn't the only one noticed the gameplay of all videos run average 20 fps.

- ocharry, on 05/30/2008, -6/+35I hope the game itself is good because I'd rather have 8 hours of awesome,

- mark076h, on 05/31/2008, -2/+23I'm just hoping it runs alot better than Crysis
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -12/+3If your PC isn`t up for it then it won`t. Oh, and "WTF I HAVE A CUSTOM BUILT XXX WITH THE LATEST XXXX AND XXXX" doesn`t mean *****. If the engine (Cryengine 2 and whatever UBI uses) is way more demanding than the current hardware can offer, then there is nothing you can do about it and bitching won`t help.
I personally hope the engine will be kick ass and will overwhelm anything on the marker. It`s about pushing it to the limit (and reasonable at the same time), not being limited by ***** yet latest hardware.
Crysis ran absolutely flawlessly and I hope this will run just as same.
Now bury me for speaking the ***** truth.- retral, on 05/31/2008, -3/+8Crysis ran flawlessly - lol. It wasn't optimized for *****.
- Maynza, on 05/31/2008, -2/+7I just want to make it clear I am burying you because you suck, not because you are speaking the truth.
- BugMeNot2, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Far Cry 2 is running on the Dunia engine, which was built from the ground up for the PC (Far Cry 2 was originally PC exclusive).
- t0x2c, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1You gotta remember Far Cry was built to run on like anything. I don't see why Far Cry 2 wouldn't be designed similarly. Crysis kind of screwed them because no one could play it, so I'm sure they want a wider audience.
- lasercannon, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Crytek isn't even the company developing Far Cry 2. Also, like the guy above you said, they're using a new engine, so don't get your hopes up.
- D4rkDrago0n, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1WTF I HAVE A CUSTOM BUILT htpc WITH THE LATEST windows AND super-go-faster stripes
I guess it doesn't work.
Also kudos to running crysis flawlessly, I run at full settings, but it can get dog slow on certain parts
- rrc589, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5It's not running on the same engine Crysis runs on, and the engine it IS running on is not as advanced as the Crysis engine.
- mrinsanity, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Oh, really? I gotta go delete some comments I left, then!
- arcooke, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Hey, you're right... I just checked and it uses a new engine called Dunia.
http://farcry.us.ubi.com/index.php?page=story
- bagboyrebel, on 05/31/2008, -1/+2which actually ran much better than anyone is willing to give it credit for.

- Tunguska, on 05/31/2008, -1/+24I thought the original Far Cry was excellent. Had that sense that you were truly on a deserted island.
- jerrycan, on 05/31/2008, -0/+30deserted? I found plenty of guys and they had guns.
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -0/+14And mutants, with guns.
- palehorse864, on 05/31/2008, -0/+13You must have walked the wrong way. When I played it I had the sense that I was on an island with a bunch of angry guys with guns shooting at me.
- SyntraFTW, on 05/31/2008, -5/+24Oblivion has 500. :)
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -12/+2Too bad Oblivion is a piece of ***** compared to the previous ones. Every single thing in that game is spoon fed and absolutely nothing is left for you to figure out without any help.
- SyntraFTW, on 05/31/2008, -2/+5Sorry for them wanting to make a game that isn't immensely hard?
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -2/+8How about "..for anyone with a triple-digit IQ"
Oblivion was so piss easy it`s pathetic. My dog would have finished it, and he`s dead. - BugMeNot2, on 05/31/2008, -2/+2But at the same time, Bethesda created a game that is not rewarding or satisfying to play.
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -2/+8How about "..for anyone with a triple-digit IQ"
- Lazydriver, on 05/31/2008, -2/+4Agreed. Hell, the tutorial was too ***** hard.
Honestly, if you're gonna want noobs to play your game, you don't give them a ***** impression: lost in the dark dungeons without an idea on how to open the god damn map!
I nearly quit Oblivion over that, actually. Luckily for me, I have patience, and I completed it and I must admit, Oblivion's a fantastic game with a ***** tutorial and lack of good optimization for slower processors.
- SyntraFTW, on 05/31/2008, -2/+5Sorry for them wanting to make a game that isn't immensely hard?
- lennybird, on 05/31/2008, -1/+8There is no way you can get 500 hours out of oblivion. I did the main quest from the 80th hour to around the 90th. I did almost every quest possible, guilds and Knights of the Nine included. I was done with the game at 110 hours, 200 the most. Maybe with Shimmering Isles, you can get a little bit more...
- poet, on 05/31/2008, -2/+4You missed something,
- lennybird, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6When the main quest is less than twelve hours long and I'm going city to city and region to region searching for ANY quest, I highly doubt I'm going to find something that will bump my play time up from 100 to 500...
- poet, on 05/31/2008, -2/+4You missed something,
- Harbinger67, on 05/31/2008, -1/+13And 450 of those hours are spent crawling through hundreds of identical dungeons looting the same useless ***** from the same boring enemies.
Another 20 hours are spent on load times.
The final 30 are spent on the main quest and the more interesting side quests. - staticneuron, on 05/31/2008, -1/+3This length of a game crap is BS. GTA4 supposedly over 100 hours, assasins creed was supposed to be 40+ hours.
But it turns out that the actual completion of story time is alot less. Then they are adding all the sidequests, that the majority of gamers cannot be bothered with, and it is a completely inaccurate way to measure because people with either finish every task faster or they can do it slower. Or if they are bored they can wander around the world(sandbox types only). I think devs should really stop talking about length like this because it is misleading.- bigdoglj52, on 06/01/2008, -0/+1I completely disagree with you. I love it when reviewers/developers tell me how long a game is. This is one of the main things I look for in reviews.
- myshl0ng, on 05/31/2008, -12/+2Too bad Oblivion is a piece of ***** compared to the previous ones. Every single thing in that game is spoon fed and absolutely nothing is left for you to figure out without any help.
- JasonCox, on 05/31/2008, -0/+49Crysis lasted 100 hours too... If only because I had to stop every 10 feet and wait for the cloak to recharge. ;-)
- casual7y, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4I actually believe that. I think i spent about 30-40 hours on crysis, myself.
And that was busting ass going directly from objective to objective, I didn't do much exploration - mrinsanity, on 05/31/2008, -0/+9Show yourself and fight like a man, American pig-dog! Yankee-shankee!
- lacronicus, on 05/31/2008, -0/+7I could easily spend 100 hours in Crysis; I love that game. But then, I personally enjoy the challenge of perfect plan execution. I remember one particular mission where I had to sneak across a rope bridge guarded by two machine gunners and no less than 4 patrolling guards. It was too long to cloak across, and being noticed by any of them meant death by chopper. The thrill of trying to score 6 perfectly timed headshots (since you couldn't let any of them see the body of another without them calling for reinforcements) was a rush I've felt in no other game.
- webcrumb, on 05/31/2008, -4/+1Death by chopper?
Dick-tasting RPGs?
WTF is up with the comments today?
- webcrumb, on 05/31/2008, -4/+1Death by chopper?

- Condemned, on 05/31/2008, -1/+40I'm not saying this is true of Far Cry 2, but I hate games that say they last for an amazing amount of hours, when really they only last for that long if you just do a lot of mindless crap that everyone hates. Assassin's Creed is a good example of this.
- casual7y, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6but but but... wasn't it worth it when ALL the viewpoints showed you scenic vistas of the cities?
- kingtobo, on 05/31/2008, -1/+13100 hours is only a good thing if the damn game is actually fun.
- DefaultGen, on 05/31/2008, -2/+35And Oblivion is "400" and Morrowind is "200" and GTA4 is "100." Seriously, these numbers never mean anything.

- NaziHatinChimp, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6And MGS 4 and GTA IV and Spore and Little Big Planet. It's another great year for gamers.
- feanix, on 05/31/2008, -2/+16A 100 hours of what, exactly? Action packed gaming or getting lost in the savanah?
- Skooma714, on 05/31/2008, -2/+10Traveling from point A to point B to get stupid ass FedEx missions and kill x number of y.
- InuX, on 05/31/2008, -0/+16I don't care how many hours a game is. As long as it's good, count me in.
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Bingo.
Portal was about 3 hours if you kind of sucked (like I did). The awesomeness of a game can't be measured in hours.- Carrot1991, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1Yes It can, gears of war disappointed me, it was only two hours long...
- Cl1mh4224rd, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4Bingo.
- jonask84, on 05/31/2008, -1/+10It's interesting to note how awesome and groundbreaking Portal was with its two and a half hour gameplay,
yet still some developers seem to think 100 hour long "go to X and bring me back Y"-gameplay is the best way to go. - hmunkey, on 05/31/2008, -2/+3I really doubt the 100 hours figure is accurate. That's like saying GTA IV will give you 1000 hours. It's all assuming that the player will explore (or they will be given monotonous travel tasks), both of which people dislike.
That said, I'm excited to see what's in store. - WileyK, on 05/31/2008, -6/+8100 hours of gameplay...
yet 0 of them will be fun.- bob12321, on 05/31/2008, -0/+4In the future there will be 500 TV channels but nothing to watch.
- AlexanderZero, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Really? I have 900 and there's nothing to watch.

- Balath, on 05/31/2008, -4/+6Oh my god, Far Cry was torture to play. Nothing died unless you filled it with all your bullets. If you tripped over a root, you'd lose half your HP, and the main character was apparently an asthmatic judging by the distance he could run.
And yet, I really am looking forward to this. I'm afraid, very afraid, but just as excited.- t0x2c, on 05/31/2008, -0/+3I liked the difficulty, it allowed you to not just run in and spray everything. I can actually take the skills I've developed (in online play) and use them.

- Balath, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1You all got me all wrong. I loved the difficulty. It's still one of my favorite LAN games. But I still remember it with a shudder or horror - what will this next installment do to me?

(well this is in the gaming section.) - SpeedSteamBoat, on 05/31/2008, -0/+20Portal proved that "x hours of gameplay!" is neither here nor there when it comes to how good a game is. There is a reason that you don't see movies advertised as "OVER 200 MINUTES OF CINEMA!" and books as "1900 PAGES OF READING!" When the rest of the game industry figures this out we might start to see more good games.
It's not about a game lasting forever or being too short at some specific number of hours. It simply shouldn't wear out its welcome or leave you feeling cheated out of something.- Amadeus2490, on 05/31/2008, -1/+4lol @ "1900 PAGES OF READING!"
- DestroyFascism, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1Yep sounds like the PHP bible second edition.

- NaziHatinChimp, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Hell according to my leaderboards I have played CoD4 WAY longer than that.
- lacronicus, on 05/31/2008, -0/+6Keep in mind that Far Cry 2 does not have a "story' per se; it is a completely open ended quest where the only story objective is to kill some warlord. Everything else in the game, from your allies, to who dies, to what factions fight each other, is all dynamic. With that, the game is as long or as short as you want it to be, and will be as action-packed or as low-key as you want it to be.
- ortucis, on 05/31/2008, -3/+4Way better than Crysis this one will be.

- ultraJesus, on 05/31/2008, -0/+5Its not using CryEngine 2. They made their own for it.

- debuffplx, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1This is one of the only PC games I'm looking forward to. I enjoyed the cheesy story of the first.
This is not the cryengine 2 and has nothing to do with the crytech engine so this cannot be compared to crisis.
This game uses the far superior Dunia engine. - AppleGeorge, on 05/31/2008, -1/+1What if you suck ass and always die when playing these games? The it's pretty much infinite hours because I just give up because I suck.
/Runs off and plays Doom. - VVCephei, on 05/31/2008, -0/+0Oh please. Are you all saying you never got even the slightest bit disappointed with games that only last a few hours? Because I am tired of paying £40 for a game that I will enjoy for about an hour or so then finish and never play again. Besides, short games can suck too. And yeah so can long games, but put it this way, in a long game there is a greater chance of the game getting better...
- Apokalyptik, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1The reason for this is, because the moment the first enemy guard spots you, he instantly communicates your exact position to every other enemy in the game-- sending them all hurtling in your direction, almost completely hidden behind some brush, to kill you.
- wafflesomd, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1I beat the first one realistic. I laugh at all those who discredit this game for being difficult.
- Pinmonkey555, on 05/31/2008, -0/+1Crytek is gone and Ubisoft is developing it, no thanks. Ubisoft needs to remember its a publisher and leave the game creating to real developers like when Red Storm was in charge of the Clancy games.
