MAC: "Whatcha doin, PC?"
PC: "I'm playing this new game."
MAC: "Oh really, which one?"
PC: "Any."
MAC: "Oh."
(silence) --- (fade) - Twinked, on 10/11/2007, -5/+69Hey I was able to get them too!! But wait... I've got an nVidia 8800GT! Oh Em Gee!! I must have h4x3d Steam! ;)
Basically, Lost Coast & Deathmatch are free to anyone who purchased HL2. Not just those who use ATi cards. - allenobendorf, on 10/11/2007, -3/+47Only Lost Coast and Deathmatch?...Oh well, nothing beats free.
- lordigor, on 10/11/2007, -1/+34lost coast is already free if you have HL2 and deathmatch comes with hl2 or hl2 episode one, i forgot which. point is, they're both basically free as it is.

If you couldn't figure out how to stop Steam loading up upon system Startup, you officially qualify for the status of "fool".
Simple two step process!
1) Click the conspicuously large "Settings" icon at the bottom of the Steam Window
2) Uncheck the prominent checkbox marked "Run Steam when Windows Starts".
Hardly rocket science. Cease the FUD! - Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -13/+35thats right, your OS is soo good you have to boot into another OS to compensate for its shortcommings
- Puffball, on 10/11/2007, -2/+23I tried it, and it works. Pretty cool.
Not sure what a RadeonT is, but my Radeon 9250 passed the hardware detection. - ekso, on 10/11/2007, -6/+26I would prefer better driver support for Linux from ATI...
That would be only reason to go back. - praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -0/+20My nVidia came with a coupon to get HL2 for free :)

Sweet offer. - BugMeNot2, on 10/11/2007, -1/+17HL2: Deathmatch lets you play Half-Life 2 mods.
- Sep11insidejob, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13You should try it, you will finds many MANY free 3rd party mods.
Steam used to suck the big one, now it is good enough. - macgyber, on 10/11/2007, -2/+14@GawtMilk
Hacker free? You have to be joking... - NiGHTSChao, on 10/11/2007, -1/+12Despite the fact that Steam isnt the greatest program, thats a very stupid reason to bury an article :/
- SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Hope my 4 year old Radeon 9600 pro makes the cut.
- potterboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9I have onboard Radeon graphics on my motherboard so I pulled out the 7900 and installed it, then I put my card back in.
- Loonacy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Why?
No, really. Why? - Ramzy, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11@llda
Yeah, because HL2 is just SO damned expensive, right?
Get a clue, moron. - violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8@Canada4Life (#6947059)
I'm surprised you don't already have these games if you own a 9600. When I bought my 9600xt it came with a coupon to redeem for HL2 on Steam (HL2 hadn't yet launched at the time). The package deal may have been exclusive to the 9600xt though. It was the greatest purchase I didn't even know I made. When they introduced the different packages for HL2 (gold, silver and bronze) I was automatically upgraded to the silver package, which gave me Counter Strike: Source, the original Half Life, and several other games I haven't even tried yet (I believe Day of Defeat was one of them).
All that said, HL2DM is great for fast paced FPS action, Lost Coast is just a short demo to showcase HDR though. If I remember correctly (it came out almost two years ago), you can't die in it, and the enemies are on unlimited respawn, no to mention it takes a grand total of about 10 minutes to play through (if you listen to ALL the commentary). - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8inigomntoya, msconfig is your friend!
- leszek, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7steam works fine with wine.
You can install it very easily by installing wine-doors:
http://www.wine-doors.org - doshindude, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7awesome offer.
too bad i already had those 2 games though... - SuperSloth, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6Lost Coast was free to owners of HL2.
- macgyber, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9HL2DM Rules, and it's good to know there will be a new influx of n00bs to pwn :D
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5I much prefer internet-enabled activation over StarForce or any other protection where you must keep the disc in the drive. Except for having to load the client before playing a game, Steam is really quite transparent and convenient. My girlfriend and I sometimes both log in to my Steam account simultaneously, and she'll play Uplink while I play Half Life 2. I checked with Valve whether this was okay and they said there's absolutely no problem with this as long as we don't play the same game at the same time. That's friggin awesome.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -0/+5Now if they'd only do this with team fortress 2. :/
- disciple83, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5This isn't the first time ATI and Steam has teamed up for free stuff. Anyone remember the 9800XT? Of course you do. If you bought one of those you got a free download of HL2 when it shipped. Although, the keywords "when it shipped" made it seem worthless since I bought my card and almost 8 months later HL2 rolled out after that whole source engine leak thing.
Anyway, Steam holds on its word. If you don't have these games yet, they'll be free to you if you are packing a Radeon, but I can't really think of any reason why you wouldn't have these games yet.
@ AndrewBarker,
If you'd read the article, you'd know that if you buy a RadeonT HD 2900XT, you'll get Ep.2 and TF2 when they ship... - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Associated Tube Industries.
www.associatedtube.com - s1mph0ny, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6Steam isn't slow? Try using it on release day.
- pcp777, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Anyone have an ATI card I could borrow?? For like an hour or two???
- justice7, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4completely disagree with you
i prefer the stability i've had with ATi over the random crashes and bugs i had with my old 6800GT - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4P.s., since I don't think it's been said elsewhere yet, Lost Coast is totally awesome! It's just a quick tech demo for Source engine upgrades, but it's packed with fun stuff to do. There are beautiful sights to see, the HDR effects are fun to toy with, lots of weapons and enemies, a little puzzle to solve... Last but certainly not least, you can turn on the optional director's commentary to hear really fascinating in-depth information about the intricacies of the Source engine, level design, texture art, water and glass reflection/refraction effects... Gabe Newell even say a few words and gives his personal email address so that you can tell him personally what you think!
Very classy freebie for HL2 and Radeon owners. You can tell that Valve really loves what they do. I don't care how long they delay their games because the polish makes it worth the wait every time. - pegisys, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8"Basically, Lost Coast & Deathmatch are free to anyone who purchased HL2. Not just those who use ATi cards."
not everyone that has an ATI cards bought HL2, also it was only free with the silver package IIRC - spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Because you bought Half Life 2 and those expansions are included in the price. Doy.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Does Steam work on Linux?
- MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I know there is a "Steam Installer" for Cedega, so I assume so.
- Ziak, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3came with HL2 I never got HL2 Episode 1 and I have it
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I got the HL2 coupon with my radeon 9600XT. I was going to go nvidia, but HL2 was just too damn tempting, even though I was going to have to wait months and months before it was released (and I misplaced th coupon and stuff several times during the delay).
- moofree, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5While steam isn't very good, WON was worse. Much worse.
- violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@ohgr (#6955060)
AFAIK DM was always free if you owned HL2, regardless of what package you have. Either way, HL2 clearly wasn't designed to be multiplayer, it was only after it was a hit that people thought it would be cool to play against each other. - MasteRR, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Agreed.
However, since I already have a Radeon card from before I was a big Linux user I wonder if I can get these games for free via Cedega.
And, I wonder if they will still work on my new machine after I get an Nvidia card. - fffizzz, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Wonder when the OS X version of Steam will be released? :P
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3i think ini has problems with his steam,
its called the user being a ***** who can't work out how to A. use msconfig or B. change the settings in steam itself.
im willing to bet the crappy graphics are either him running in on a vastly underpowered machine or being unable to use the "options" menu in the games itself - violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@AndrewDBarker (#6953933)
I wish. It's going to be packaged with HL2:EP2 and Portal though. That makes it worth the purchase IMO. - HelplessSEAL, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2well that's true and all, but DM gives access to a motherload of mods to tinker with. My favorite hidden gem of all time: Sourceforts, I really wish that people discover this game as well, it's so satisfying building your very own base, it bring back childhood memories alright. Can't complain about other up and coming mods like 007:Goldeneye or Perfect Dark, all diamonds in the rough.
- violentvinyl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@corrupt2k (#6954757)
I had issues once, but it turned out Peer Guardian was blocking Steam. - ChronicColonic, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3@Nitro187
I don't think I have ever seen five negatives in a sentence before...Five negatives = one negative. Okay, I will dig you down. - Murdats, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2really inog? works perfectly fine for me, run a steam game, if steam isnt running, it runs, then runs the game
- kinadian, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure if I got the same error but for quite a while I couldn't connect. It turned out that I had my system setup in the DMZ of my router. As soon as I disable the DMZ, Steam connected without a problem.
I never understood how having my system in the DMZ prevented Steam from connecting but I haven't had an issue since. -
