yeah curious to know how a social news site is going to handle that issue as a result of the new equation ---> zero friends + zero influence = happiest
yeah, i realize they called off the revolt and everything, but the more i think about it the more i wonder, what the hell is the appeal of social news minus the socializing?
Did you notice that the next entry in the screenshot after ballstriker is Kevin Rose, who managed to make the FP with 207 diggs? ;) His friends list is trimmed at 99, which is interesting. First of all, I'm suprised he subjects his own diggs to the digg algorithm. Second, given who he is, wouldn't virtually all of his submissions make the FP no matter how many friends he has?
So, what if EVERYONE un-friended all their friends? All you'd have to do is keep all your friends submission pages on RSS feeds, that way you wouldn't miss a submission, and all the Diggs the submissions received couldn't be counted as from friends (coz you wouldn't have any). It would just be counted as normal NON-friend users Digging your submissions. Surely that's the answer? I guess I'm BANNED now lol.
I guess if the only reason you're on digg is to see how many articles you can get to the front page, and don't care about what your friends are interested in, and also don't care about their comments...sure, then it makes sense to unfriend everyone so your articles can get to the frontpage more easily.
I didn't realize this was a competition. Some articles are interesting and will never make it to the front page because they're interesting only to a limited group of people who have probably friended each other or will in the future. You people are ridiculous to complain about an algorithm change...it's not like the news will suddenly stop just because different people are submitting the articles.
I think it's a different number depending on your TOPIC.
The 19-digg article is "Other Sports". A relatively obscure topic compared to "Apple", "Design", "US Elections 2008", etc.
It may also have something to do with how quickly it gathered those 19 diggs. Their algorithm is fairly confidential, who knows what factors go into an article making the front page?
Is it such a bad thing that the criteria for reaching the FP has been shaken up? It seems to me that this will bring some new blood into the stories everyone sees. Everyone so often magazines and newspapers hire a new writer, or bump someone up to writing features. Think of this as the same thing. How could it be bad?
It is in the sports section. This happens quite often for sports, actually. The make front page in 20-30 diggs, then get buried off of all, cause digg users don't really digg sports stories (why it got front page so quick in the first place)
Seriously. This is nutz.
Suggestion. People without friends, 150 diggs for something to end up on the front page. People with lots of friends, the number of friends plus 100.
Read the title: "TOTALLY AMAZING TRICK SHOTS"!! If that doesn't factor into the digg algorithm and get put on the front page immediately then what does?? ...I mean, they were amazing!
Perhaps...WHO CARES!?!?!?!? Get a frikkin' life. Go DO something. Who cares what's on the "FP" of Digg? Jesucristo! Do you really spend that much time considering such things? It is a website. That's it. A website.
you guys still dint get it.????... its simple...Kevin Rose simply promotes articles he reads and likes to front page from his admin page...
theres absolutely no rhyme or reason to what ends up on the front page...and u are fooled into believing its an algo... ;-)
Who the ***** cares! You don't understand the algorithm. It has LONG been established that it is NOT based simply on number of Diggs. You are NOT going to reverse engineer the system. Stop trying to
I must be one of the few people who consume only on Digg. I think I tried to post a couple lame articles soon after joining the site in 2005, and realized I didn't give a ***** about posting stuff. I've added people to my friends list, but I am indifferent about them since I don't post. Hell, I don't even care about their activity.
how did this make the front page...lol. Look how bored we have become fellow diggers! digging a story about a picture that has a shot of a 19 dug story. Lets go outside and live!
Why, yesterday was everyone clamoring about it taking to many diggs to reach the front page? Now that one with less than 200 diggs hits the front page and suddenly everyone is surprised, it's amazing, it's like digg actually listened to it base users. Quit acting shocked
