- Ike0, on 12/03/2007, -11/+151I and most of the gaming community support you Jeff. I'm boycotting GameSpot and everything it stands for. It makes me sad to see how far it has fallen because for me back in 2002-2005 it was the absolute golden staple in gaming journalism and I was an active member of the community. I became less active in the community (especially the forums) back in 2005 after the reformatting of the site but I still always read the site for news, reviews, and previews and continued to do so until this recent event. This situation is ***** and I hope everyone realizes that no matter what CNET or GameSpot says on the matter tomorrow. Gerstmann did not deserve to be fired.
- LogitechG15, on 12/03/2007, -3/+93Very humble man, hopefully he finds a better job elsewhere.
- i64X, on 12/03/2007, -6/+76***** Gamespot.
- AwesomeMonster, on 12/03/2007, -3/+50Here's for hoping he gets a job at 1up. I'd love to see him write for egm.
- DCJoeDogaswell, on 12/03/2007, -3/+42It's nice to see he hasn't turned all Ebenezer Scrooge on gaming journalism.
- ronnsprocket, on 12/03/2007, -3/+38it's ***** to do something like this before the holidays.
- digjam, on 12/03/2007, -2/+32i remember a stupid game called Perfect Dark Zero was giving 9.0 /10 and I innocently bought it just to realise later that it was a fkd up game...
screw u gamespot - retrovertigo, on 12/03/2007, -2/+25Was the 8.8 review of Twilight Princess really that bad of a score??? An 8.8 is a fantastic score! If people are still bitter about that, y'all need to get a life and stop over analyzing a score that is 0.2 less than a 9. Nobody would have made a big deal about it if it hadn't been for the hype and the fact that it was a Zelda game. If this was the same exact game without the Zelda franchise characters, NOBODY WOULD HAVE CARED.
- zizzy, on 12/03/2007, -5/+27"***** Gamespot" is the new "***** THE RIAA"
- JCrusader, on 12/03/2007, -2/+23Gamespot = the next MTV
I bet it wouldn't be in the direction of game reviews anymore, but rather in the direction of game deception :( - Tippis, on 12/03/2007, -2/+20Eidos pays Gamespot for K&L ads.
Gamespot plasters entire site with K&L banners
Gertsmann gives K&L a 6.0
Eidos retracts ad spendings
Gertsmann is fired from Gamespot
<insert twighlight zone music/>
'net goes wild about game journalism corruption - EvaMonkey01, on 12/03/2007, -0/+14Some sort of reality TV channel.
- zydar, on 12/03/2007, -6/+20I was waiting for what he had to say before passing my judgment. He has earned my respect with those words.
Whether it's game development or "the editorial side" he eventually chooses, I wish him all the best.
Honest reviewers who call it like they see it ought not to remain with Gamespot for fear of losing their own personal integrity by being branded. Jump ship, Alex and others. We're behind you. - mburk, on 12/03/2007, -3/+16Gamespot was great until Greg Kasavin left. It's been all downhill from there. This never would've happened under his watch.
- Subvexer, on 12/03/2007, -1/+12It may be difficult to have been fired, but this is his claim to fame. He won't have trouble finding work at any other reviewers that want to seem 'hip'.
. - duggtodeath, on 12/03/2007, -6/+16I pray that Jeff starts his own review site, mayb he can link up with some old buddies or maybe some disgruntled GS employees. Who knows, we can get the equivalent of a PC Accelerator magazine in website form!
- vhold, on 12/03/2007, -0/+9Even if he didn't get paid off, he probably would want to keep his options open. Bad mouthing a former employer is one of the biggest mistakes you can make when you are trying to get a new job. Nobody wants to hire somebody that will eventually part ways and smear them.
- Robart, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8A good gaming program on Revision3 would be nice........
- Dustin00, on 12/03/2007, -0/+8What's MTV?
- EvaMonkey01, on 12/03/2007, -2/+10I heard he got fired for stealing office supplies.
- Fox318, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7I just hope he doesnt burn the office down.
I heard he has a thing with Staplers. - inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7I used to go to Gamespot to check reviews on all games that I was considering buying. I will never visit their site again -- even with an apology.
- vhold, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7This is 100% true. Gamespot tends to give lower scores. An 8.8 on their site is quite good. I agreed with Gertsmann that Twilight Princess felt like a GC game with Wii controls tacked on, which it was.
I bet he was also thinking ahead to when a full fledged Wii Zelda eventually came out and blows it away. It's kind of lame to to give the weird ported game a 9.5, only to barely be able to give the mind blowingly awesome one a slightly higher score. - m3mn0n, on 12/03/2007, -2/+8Yeah. ***** C|Net
- McTim, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7I'm sure his lawyer advised him saying anything of real content would be a bad idea.
- ChrisWalkr, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5Your mum.
- fourcorners, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5No it wasn't that bad, in fact it was the only honest review. It's annoying how a lot of gamers try to get every top list filled with everything Nintendo. Haven't these people and reviewers gamed on anything other than a Nintendo consoles? Arcade, Sega, PC and to some extent Playstation titles never get the attention they deserve after their prime. Just a few days ago here on digg in the pc game section about some stupid water effect pictures a bunch of people where up in arms that Wave Race 64 of all mediocre things wasn't pictured.. Jet Moto wasn't pictured either and no one should give a damn because both of these games are on the same level. Being on a Nintendo console doesn't make a game magically amazing.
HotSpot won't be the same without Jeff it was one of the best podcast out there, it beat the piss out of the 1up Yours but wasn't quite as good as the 1up Show. I'm going to play some Samurai Showdown later in memory of hotspot and g-a-a-a-a-amespot dot com. - EvaMonkey01, on 12/03/2007, -0/+5Do you often find yourself yelling at younger people who won't stay off your yard?
- marksweb, on 12/03/2007, -5/+9a company that does this to any member of staff just for the outcome of a review is obviously as credible as Fox news.
GameSpot obviously gets paid to review games how the producers/designers want them to. No point reading a review if its only going to turn out one way.
don't believe the hype!!! - inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4*****' A
- Laxaloot, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4like a rev3/twit but for gamespot's death instead of techtv?
- MrFisty, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4I think he'll have plenty of options open to him. There aren't many people in the industry who can attract this level of support. It's a credit to his work.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4Um because they really can't legally come out and say why they fired him? It's called employer/employee privacy laws.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4so that Gamespot, RIAA, MPAA, CRIA, IFPI, FBI, CIA, Brien.... Did i miss anyone?
- mlvassallo, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Gamespot= The next IGN= The next MTV...
- vhold, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Odds are GameSspot is just waiting it out and trying to keep as quiet as possible, because the short attention span of angry people on the internet means that actually addressing it has a tendency to just draw the problem out. We really don't know how much damage this has actually caused them, it just looks bad from this little microcosm, but what percentage of their users even know this is going on?
- gypsi, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3riaa? absolutely, ***** them too.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Bush?
- bffoley, on 12/03/2007, -4/+7On one hand I feel bad for Gertsmann who lost his job over something so stupid
On the other hand, game magazines and sites have been paid off like this for a very very long time. They've always given extra love to "big" games and get advertisement $$ in return. Im just amazed how people are treating this like Serious Business. Are they really that surprised? - credence, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Also: Penny Arcade gave a quick comic on the subject @
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/11/29 - ripstuntz, on 12/03/2007, -4/+7He really doesn't seem to shaken up about the whole thing. Can you blame him though? I mean seriously, how easily is this talented man going to be picked up by IGN or other sites just like GameSpot. He's a very intelligent and creative writer and was fired for doing his job.
- hereisjohnny, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Jeff was the only reason I visited Gamespot after Greg Kasavin left. But frankly, nobody knows why he got fired. Maybe he took a dump in the staff room's coffee machine or was caught watching animal porn and that's why he was terminated. What I'm saying is lets find out what really happened before we start a riot.
- skyfire1, on 12/03/2007, -5/+8Gamestop wrongfully rated Twilight Princess 8.9 when it should have received a 6.8.
- Hoogs, on 12/03/2007, -1/+4Ahh, ok, thanks. That doesn't seem fair that he got fired for being honest.
- Laxaloot, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3rev3 should try to get him and grab morgan webb, along with her webb alert
- duggtodeath, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2That would be awesome!
- vagarach, on 12/04/2007, -0/+2Cnet didn't buy Gamespot yesterday. When G4 and TechTV merged the effects were apparent from the start, while Gamespot has managed to be itself for quite some time after.
- fightstrife, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2yeah get jeff and rich gallop back together on Rev3 Network!! DO IT!
- inactive, on 08/11/2008, -0/+2Why would he want his job back with these corporate fascists?
- gothsquirrel, on 12/03/2007, -3/+5I didn't actually feel his review was all that controversial. Not his fault his company is being paid off and the game makers didn't like it.
