Yeah, who really thinks that Nintendo would take away buttons, remove the analog stick, and design it to be used with one hand... without doing something to make up for these changes?
If you STILL don't know anything about it... the big deal is having accurate 3D motion sensing including rotation, distance from the screen, and the point on the screen at which the remote is pointing (like a light gun). It takes away a lot of the awkward, arbitrary abstraction of using a 2D control scheme to control objects/characters in 3D worlds. Eventually, we will have to move away from the two-analog-sticks-and-a-bunch-of-buttons control scheme. Nintendo just happens to think the time is now... - SavannahLion, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is an OK article, it does gloss over some details. For instance, anyone worth their salt ripped the boot off the 2600 controller. The biggest complaint about the 5200 controller was because they didn't self center. It talks about the SNES generation controller having a "new" button on third party controllers, ie the turbo. I have NES, even Atari joystick controllers that have this.
Interesting article, but kind of light on the facts. It reads more like a promotional thing even though he does focus on multiple companies. - SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1TG16 was definitely NEC, I remember the ad ("What happens when a billion dollar electronics company enters the video game industry..."). I actually still own both, the Jaguar has some great titles, including my favorite version of Raiden, the original Alien VS. Predator, & Iron Soldier 1. I actually owned a TurboExpress before I purchased a TG16; it was awesome being able to use the same games on the console and the handheld (this was years before the Sega Nomad). The TurboExpress is actually quite impressive; it's active matrix LCD is IMO the best screen on any handheld until the release of the GBA SP (but the battery life was horrible).
- uptown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Where's the NES MAX? Best controller EVER!
- 404notfound, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Well-written and covers all the important points.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this article is boring and full of obvious information, it gives no benefits or cons to any controller design nor does it go in depth on any controller. Hell they dont even mention the reason Sony is changing the design is because they were sued for patent infringment...they alos left out quite a few controllers.
I've known of these guys since they started, they are incredibly biased and always have been, its a Nintendo fanboy based site and always has been, just recently they have branched off into other consoles but their roots show through in everything they do, no digg. - mattv, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah so this would be like if suddenly humans started being fish again? i'm pretty sure evolution doesn't suddenly go from a steady stream of slight improvements to "well maybe we had it right back when it was just a rectangle"
- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1ahh, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamepad
- christof53, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The Dreamcast controller remains my favourite controller, good to see it in there.
- clumsyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Basically, we went from hand movements (joystick), to thumb movements, and back to hand movements (Rev controller).
- uberphildo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Strangely ironic. This is exactly what we're covering right now on our podcast, www.insidetheconsole.com
We're doing a three-part series on videogame controllers; past, present and future. I saw this link on digg just a few hours after we taped part one.
Very good read though, I'll be sure to use it as a reference in the next two parts. - Noloco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/
Some of you say it's inaccurate and what not. Your right, but this site. I remember this site a few years back and I used to know the owner. It's very indepth and to the point. Someone posted it here and when I loaded up the Revolution history page all I could do was think about http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/ So glad to see someone submitted the link. Thanks. - jaybones1515, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0INTELLIVISION! I Cant believe no one mentioned it! Come on..with the light dimmer in the middle of the calculator. Nuthin like playing Pitfall on that thing.
- Groovester, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It s a good article, I like it, I'm a fan of that game network so that might bias me. However, if it was to get into great detail about all the controller, it would be forever long and lose my interest. They highlighted all the "major" developments in controls and whatnot
+digg - brownman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0good article
+digg - prkchpsndwiches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I meant to say disagree...
- meefman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've seen videos of the controller in motion and I was impressed. My major pet peeve regarding current gaming controllers is how awkward it is to play when compared to a mouse + keyboard configuration. My thumbs aren't made of steel. It seems interesting how the Revolution controller is placed sideways and steered like a steering wheel in racing games, and you flip it up to jump (super mario).
- condorhauck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dugg, but where is Colecovision
- prkchpsndwiches, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree with many of the statements made about this article.
#1. It was a cool idea, but more factual and interesting design details could have been implemented.
#2. It was very Nintendo pointed. I have nothing against Nintendo, and yes they did initiate many of the advances in what type pf potential a controller has, but of few of their controllers lack the (what I call "fluidity" effect) When I hold a Dreamcast, PS1/PS2, Xbox 360, NES or SNES It just feels right. All the buttons feel very easily accessible. The N64 controller was cool and fun to use, but I just never got the right feel with it.Especially when some games like Turok had you using the c buttons for other functions. The Gamecube controller also never caught on with me. The placement of the button s(especially the new placement of the Z) just didn't feel right.
#3. Th article was also obviously Anti-PS I personally enjoy the Nintendo line of systems and games over the others, but think PS has put many great products out there including their controllers. Some people are just better at redesigning than innovating. Just because one is your favorite doesn't mean yo need to knockdown another company. Gamers should have universal love for all games/game system and be happy with the variety of choices available to us. (Minus the Gizmondo and a few others lol j/k)
#4 I can't comment on the Atari or Sega etc, because although I had have played them, I don't think my experience is high enough to pass judgement or make comments.
Also in response to sega being a great controller for fighting games. I have seen a few ps2 controllers made to go along with one of the street fighter games. It has the same setup as they moved one set of top buttons down, so it looks like a sega meshed with a PS2. Very cool.

Again it was a great idea, that with effort, could have made a great story. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's a shallow article
the NES was not the first to use a D-Pad. - pavelich, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0ahah i am with ya christof, something about the dreamcast controller was just right. The lcd is an awesome innovation and would be great to play with a game like madden nowadays

so classic"
Thanks for posting that I didn't remeber that other controller on the list and I thought I was going nuts. - quack3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone remember if it was the Turbografx 16 controller that was massive and had as much buttons as a keyboard?
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Javaru, cool link.
Anyways, the TG16 controller is http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/tg16.html
The Atari Jaguar is http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/jaguar.html - hadem, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't understand why lots of people seem to like the Revolution's controller. When I go to play a video game, I want to be lazy and relax on the sofa. I don't want to have to do a work out just to play a FPS. It could be really cool when it is used right, but I have a feeling that many developers are going to use it in very lame ways.

so classic - neocitron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0dance dance revolution is the best controller ever
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0N64 controller still wins hands down! Only way to play a first person shooter other than a keyboard and mouse (ps2 is a joke).
- SDNick484, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not a bad summary of controllers, but some interesting ones were left out. In particular:
TurboGrafx 16 -- controller with built in turbo switches (I think that's the first OEM controller with turbos).
Atari Jaguar -- Kind of a cross between the 5200 controller and a Genesis controller, too many buttons
Sega Saturn -- The original Saturn is probably the last traditional (NES-style) controller before the PS1/N64 came out. - fuzzweed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Oh yeah!! this is more like it http://www.syntaxerror.nu/joysticks.html ....
- Flyngwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, alright, I could write that article better. Fun to reminisce, but dumb article.
- spectre_25gt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This article had way too many important controllers missing. NES Advantage anyone? It was also misleading as far as the original developer of the analog controller. Sega made that popular with their 3d controller bundled with Knights Into Dreams.
- 4tygames, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Personally, the N64 and GameCube controllers feel great. For some reason, the buttons on the GameCube feel like the right size, unlike the Xbox controller. I do miss the z-trigger and I wish that was on the GameCube controller. The WaveBird was a godsend. I know I spent a good 3 minutes or so untangling cords. I like the Genesis controller over the SNES, just feels better in my hands. I can't stand any of the Playstation controllers, they are too small and the analog controller sticks do not feel right at all.
+Digg - Tobey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0While the author was incredibly biased towards Nintendo, I think he had every right to be. I mean look at all Nintendo has done! They're almost like the Apple of the console world.
- positron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Evolution... Joo keep use-een dat word. I do note theenk it means what joo theenk it means."
Evolution is not defined by a steady progression towards more advanced forms. Evolution is simply the process of incremental change towards more suitable forms in which to survive in a particular environment. I'm no Nintendo fan-boy, but I think the correct definition of evolution more accurately defines that company. Is there any other console manufacturer which has survived in this market as long as Nintendo and still managed to turn a profit with each successive generation? - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Eh, no reason to have the PS2 controller up there, as they said, it's almost exactly the PS1 controller, the console may have been an important mark in history, but the controller was not.
- fuzzweed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0There's one classic for a start http://www.clive.nl/detail/23260/ . Left AND right handed. top fire button and, yes, a trigger while the Nintendo was still in daipers.
- fuzzweed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0what about the hundreds of real joystick designs we went through with the C64 and Speccy??? Atari to Nintendo in one fell swoop. I think not....
- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I love reading shoddy articles like this and coming up with like 10+ errors only from memory. It's a great idea tho. I would really like to see this article done wikipedia style, cause this author is a retarded n00b.
- akatrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the author has a major reason to be biased towards nintendo. they are practically the only company that offers any innovation to gaming. the only thing sony had to offer was a second analog stick, but nintendo already had the "C buttons" that were supposed to function the same. microsoft offered what? the black and white buttons? but those got made into trigger buttons on their next gen console. so it still stands that nintendo is the leader of innovation

A very big database of controllers. It es has the paddles and it yes has Nes Max. Even I have Nes Max along with many other paddles. There is another article someone else posted as a link in the comments with a nice list, but http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/ is a really well done list. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Sega Saturn -- best control pad (the japan version, same as US rev. 2 version) -- SEGA MAKES A USB VERSION! You can get it from lik-sang and other such companies. A must have for emulators, etc.
Gamecube -- best 3d pad. Buttons all have a unique feel, so you don't have to take your eyes off the screen. Can play smash brothers all day and not get cramps (ask how i know...). OEM RF controllers available early in the console's life cycle. - shakin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You wanna know where modern controllers got their design? Just take a look at the NES Max. I used to go over to a friend's house just so I could play with this thing.
http://www.axess.com/twilight/console/detail/nes_max.html - TurmoilTech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still waiting for the Analog/Tracker ball combo controller. The capabilities of that kind of controller would be as good as using a controller will get. The accuracy of TrackerBall (mouse) and the freedom of an analog. A controller like that would be unmatched by ANY controller scheme currently on the market to date.
- dalle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Not that "in depth" but great article anyways!
- quack3r, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Thanks guy for the info. Yea I got it wrong its the Jaguar 64 with the huge controller. I remembered that thing cost alot for its time. Use to play it at the local BEST store before they ran out of business.
- lorcan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i agree!!! well worth the 29.21seconds i spent reading it. Great detail........
