- SpectralSounds, on 12/29/2008, -1/+11How about I bury you because you asked for a Digg.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+9Yep but sometimes the classic could use a makeover, without touching the game play, such as Sonic 2 HD: http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sega/2008/04/sonic- ...
- panic, on 12/30/2008, -0/+6Anyone who enjoyed the Sierra classics of the 80s and early 90s should check out www.agdinteractive.com and www.infamous-adventures.com . AGD has remade Kings Quest 1, Kings Quest 2, and Quest for Glory 2. KQ1 and 2 were taken off the site while they revamp them, but they'll be back soon. Infamous Adventures remade KQ3 and is currently working on a remake of Space Quest 2. All of the games I mentioned are very professionally done and have kept true to the classic spirit of those games and they're free!
- K4Lic0, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5I think more games need the MegaMan 9 treatment. Maybe a new 8-bit Castlevania? Another 8-bit Zelda?
- leandrotami, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5Usually game remake projects are started by fans who are strongly motivated and feel they have the technical abilities to make them happen. Companies usually try to take advantage of successful old franchises and create entirely new games which are hardly related to the originals (examples that come to my mind are Prince of Persia, Alone in the Dark and Leisure Suit Larry).
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+5New Super Mario Bros, Chrono Trigger DS, and Contra IV come to mind...
- NexusV2, on 12/30/2008, -1/+5Buried 'cause you asked for a Digg....
- TonyLocNE, on 12/30/2008, -0/+4When I first began to click on this article, I hadn't read the whole title yet... I thought it was going to be an article about Digg's picture and article recycling center.
If you drop off the 2nd part of the title, it would work perfect as MrBabyMan's slogan. - danielsan79, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3Other than the stage layout, it barely resembles the original. The gameplay is awesome. I too hated it as a kid, this one is a blast. Plus the graphics and music are top notch. It should be the blueprint for remakes in HD.
- Cyberdactyl, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3BattleZone (1998) to this day. . .has an active playing online community.
Some of the smoothest vehicle control algorithms of ANY game, to this day.
It was considered one of the best games of the late 90's by many game review site insiders.
It can be downloaded for free (released by Activision in 2003) here:
http://battlezone1.freeforums.org/downloads-bz-1-4 ...
And no, this isn't some spam or banner *****...just a freakin free download.
ENJOY! - SquigglyP, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3I've not played that game, but isn't it basically the exact same gameplay with just updated graphics? The 'physics' in it are just the same 'physics' that was in the old game, as far as I'm aware.
I'm still not going to play it. I hated the original. - SiXiam, on 12/30/2008, -0/+3I didn't know they were remaking Metroid 2...
Awesome, I loved that game when I was younger. I think it was my second gameboy game, after Tetris of course..
I did get lost a lot and it took me forever to find the Varia suit. Actually if I recall correctly I found the way as part of a ceral box advertising the game. Keep in mind this was pre-internet and 1-900 help lines cost money, that I'm sure my parents wouldn't have let me pay for... - Accolade1, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Touche
- leandrotami, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2If you haven't already, check out Maniac Mansion Deluxe by LucasFan Games. It is a faithful VGA remake of the original LucasFilms game from 1987. It also includes mouse support and background MIDI music. It has been translated to dozens of languages (I had the privilege of participating in the Spanish translation). Although http://www.lucasfangames.de/ has been dead for more than a year, you can find the game with just a simple Google search.
There's also Maniac Mansion Mania, an open collaborative project which provides tools and resources related to Maniac Mansion and Zak McKracken for amateur adventure game makers. There are lots of MMM episodes, many of them also available in several languages.
Adventure games are *NOT* dead! - sg7791, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2...Just like in the Long, Long Trailer
- itsripitsrip, on 12/30/2008, -1/+3some games shouldn't be touched, unless all that's changed is online capability or something of that nature.
goldeneye/halo 1/killer instinct on xbl...*drools* - inactive, on 12/29/2008, -1/+3i was hoping to see a pic of street fighter 2 ryu hadokening street fighter 4 ryu
- tgc1, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2I think what would be cool is if they expanded some of the classic games. Give us more levels. More campaigns. Stuff like that. I've always wondered how big and expansive some of the old games could have been if it weren't for the hardware and memory limitations they had. Think about it, back in the 8-bit era games were a few Megabytes. Now we have Gigabytes to play with. Could you imagine how big a game could get, how many characters and such... using the same game play of old? You could have thousands of levels. Make games epics. Sure they would take you a year to complete, but holy hell would that be interesting.
- bipolarruledout, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Welcome to the thrift store economy.
- diggduggDOOM, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Yes, but how many childrens were you?
- SirFink, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Okay, that made me laugh.
- tech10171968, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2I don't think you can talk about PC gaming classics without mentioning Fallout 1&2. Those two titles had so many ways to play, and so many ways the story could turn out, that you could play the game 5 different times and get 5 completely different outcomes. *HIGH* replayability value. Maybe that's why I still have the original CDs in my collection.
While I'm thinking about it, Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri was an Oldie But Goodie, too. - DforSpiD, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Something about reliving childhood dreams would be far less creepy
- DarkWhitty, on 12/30/2008, -1/+3REMAKE SONIC FOR CHRISTS SAKE!
- bagboyrebel, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2You mean someone is actually doing that? That's awesome, last I saw it was just concept art.
- LucerinRed, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2the DS castlevania games are fine. No need for an 8-bit castlevania game when the genre has stayed 2D and stayed completely awesome.
- bagboyrebel, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Castlevania doesn't need to go back to 8 bit in my opinion, it's been doing fine on the DS how it is. Zelda on the other hand, could use another SNES style game (and not Phantom Hourglass, it was my least favorite game in the series not including the CD-i games).
- DforSpiD, on 12/30/2008, -0/+2Please don't go, the drones need you, they look up to you.
- bergur1, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I was never introduced to Bionic Commando as a kid and playing the Remix was a real treat. The grapple mechanic shone the most from modern physics engines and made a platformer without jumping EXTREMELY fun. While playing the game I was also pleased with the rocking soundtrack and the little easter eggs.
- robbob, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1nostalgia sells because some people would like to crawl into the little boy/girl they were
- Carrot1991, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Street Fighter HD was also wicked.
- leandrotami, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I had a great time replaying King's Quest I "Quest for the Crown" and King's Quest II "Romancing the Stones". Sierra On-Line couldn't have made them better. Each game has full digital audio voices and soundtracks. Plus, KQ1 is available in several languages!
- HimThatSpeaks, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I claim to be at least two. I like to think I was the kid that went on treks five miles from my house at the age of seven all by myself, or with a friend, and I was also the kid that played games and mastered them. We all have many different perceptions of our past and thus, referring to being more than one entity is perfectly acceptable. Unless of course you lived a dull dry monotone childhood, or you have become enlightened and see yourself for what you were.
- ortucis, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I never played the original and I hate the new one.. so I doubt it that I would have loved the original (***** controls).
- appleseed1234, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Mah boi, this game is what all true players strive for.
- inactive, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Someone please resurrect the XCOM franchise. If I could get the original UFO Defense to run on Vista I'd probably be playing it now.
- Accolade1, on 12/29/2008, -5/+6Why read this when I can play Super Mario Brothers 3 in Firefox right now?
Sometimes it's better to leave classics alone. - Mujokan, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1I'll give FreeCol a try. There is a well-made version of Privateer, the space exploration game from the 1990s, available from sourceforge.
- StankInTheBank, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Jetpack.
- davenport651, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Check out Valve's content delivery system, Steam. They seem to have all of the old XCOM games: http://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=xcom
Also, I thought there were some open source games in the style of x-com. - short, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1An Autoduel remake would be nice. However, there are some classic games that should just be left alone.
- aterimperator, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1"A few visual tweaks, a new control scheme, and a remixed soundtrack"
Remixed is better than completely new, but part of the nostalgia comes from hearing the same songs in their 8 and 16-bit forms. - jthei, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Doug asked you for a berry.
- shandromand, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1Oh wow. Messiah! I got that game solely based on two things: Fear Factory did the music track for the intro, and the first words you hear as the game starts are "I'm a cop!" Never did beat that damned thing either (I know, I suck).
- pwdrskier, on 12/31/2008, -0/+1Is there going to be another supersmash?
that is the only question i have - TheInimitable, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1http://forums.sonicretro.org/index.php?showtopic=1 ...
Sonic 2 HD, if you've not seen it yet. - ProfessorRiffs, on 12/30/2008, -0/+1It's like a big fancy cover song.
- utvolmiles, on 12/30/2008, -0/+0I love the classics especially when they are close to their original form
- cubicledrone, on 12/29/2008, -3/+3Seems the game industry is hiring Hollywood management. "Remakes and sequels only! We are too irresponsible and immature to green-light something with risk attached! Oh, and everyone is laid off as soon as it ships. There's cake in the conference room! (clap clap)"
