- terminalpariah, on 04/21/2008, -7/+170"ok this is bull, they stole my arctic shipment map idea, the exact same thing"
Even he admits it. They didn't steal his map, just the concept of DM on a ship in the middle of the ocean. I wonder if he's played any CoD4... - whoreable, on 04/21/2008, -59/+207I played over 5000 hours of UT2k4. UT3 is a joke. The maps, the weapon balance, the user interface, everything about the game blows. Epic never ceases to amaze me with the ***** they pull. The Unreal engine doesn't even look that good. I hope people realize the company, as well as their engine, is ***** and stop buying their games. Also I hope developers realize the engine is crappy and stop using it to make other games. That is all.
- zenmasher, on 04/21/2008, -3/+1125000 hours! Man, that is almost two years of 8 hour days. No judgment just...holy *****!
- gnayeifla, on 04/21/2008, -3/+108Mark Rein actually stepped in and unbanned the fellow.

Talk between Epic and modder in progress
http://utforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=25357 ...
*Mod at Neogaf changed the topic of the thread. LOL
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1083287 ... - inactive, on 04/21/2008, -13/+98Epic didn't steal his map, even if they are using his map in a completely unchanged form. He didn't read the fine print---if you make a map using the software provided to do so by epic, then it belongs to epic, period. It was theirs from the first moment.
No, it's not "fair". But it is the case, and maybe now someone, somewhere will read licensing agreements carefully before hitting ok. - rath5000, on 04/21/2008, -6/+76Very nice 2 articles on digg in 1 day about Epic being total douchebags i have to say im impressed.
- HydrogenY, on 04/21/2008, -24/+92From what I gathered from the forum..
Epic's map:

Jon's map:
http://i31.tinypic.com/2a65ged.jpg
If this is right then they did rip him off imho. The barge is the same, the scenery is the same. Could not be a co-incidence to that degree.
I doubt it was intentional though. They couldn't possibly have thought they could rip someone off in a public forum and get away with it. Maybe they were gathering footage for the trailer and just grabbed the wrong map. - hokeywebb22, on 04/21/2008, -5/+60Even if the game isn't that good the engine is amazing. The tools you have to use in the editor are amazing! I worked with UT2K4 and now am working with Unreal 3 and it's a world of difference.
- mashw, on 04/21/2008, -2/+44He even stated in the maps launch thread that he was inspired by CoD4. What a hypocrite.
- flashback99, on 04/21/2008, -7/+48Yes you do. It's a freakin' inanimate object.
- WhereAmI, on 04/21/2008, -11/+50I don't get Epic. They piss off their main userbase (PC users) with the comments on "PC gaming is dead." But then they go and give PS3 UT3 keyboard/mouse and mod support. Then they do something like this. Then they undo it (gnayeifla comment above.) Then they say the Wii is a step backwards in gaming (although I agree).
Just wtf? - iggiafrica, on 04/21/2008, -1/+38Not to mention UT99 had a map with the same concept, called DM-Kgalleon i think
- inactive, on 04/21/2008, -20/+53You don't have to be retarded to hate the Wii.
- saxreturns, on 04/21/2008, -1/+33Epic used to be so great in the '90s... so many classic PC games. What the hell happened?

Modder's reply
http://utforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?p=25357 ... - inactive, on 04/21/2008, -2/+31Amen brother!!! I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has played many many hours of Ut2k4 then, when I went over to UT3 recently, I found I was vastly disappointed. Everything you say is true. I also would like to add that it feels so much like the game is designed to be a controller consoler, which I guess would explain the complete butchering of the game that used to be so great. Its like they ignored the old roots... the PC!!! Well, thats how it feels, gameplay wise. I liked 2k4 so much more...
- Books, on 04/21/2008, -0/+29If I read another 'Epic Fail' or 'Epic Win' or 'Epic..' anything for that matter, I'm gonna hafta choke a bitch.
- fulibs, on 04/21/2008, -3/+29Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
- cinnix, on 04/21/2008, -1/+27I've got to say this, the whole transition from UT2004 to UT3 is sounding a lot like what it was like for the Original UT to UT2004. A lot of the hardcore fans were lost during the transition, including myself.
While the game was not for me, it was not exactly unplayable; it just didn't have that magic the original seemed to have. Despite what myself and a few other fans seemed to think, you can't deny that the game was still extremely popular, and the underlying engine even more so. The unreal engine has been the basis of so many reputable games - saying that the engine is ***** just because of your personal disapproval of the game is just silly.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unreal_Engine_games
Look long and hard at that list, and then come back and say the Unreal Engine is *****. A good few of those game have defined major milestones in gaming history.
I'm not being an Epic fan boy, I'm just being sensible and doing some of my own research before jumping on the bandwagon. I don't believe in making ridiculous claims either, especially without anything to back them up with.
Finally - http://utforums.epicgames.com/showpost.php?s=a6eaa ...
Points towards this whole submission to be inaccurate. - chillypacman, on 04/21/2008, -5/+29UT3 is a rip off and a scam.
Two gameplay modes cut for an all new 'warefare' mode which is just absoloute ***** remake of a previous gameplay mode, virtually the same no less.
Back early on in its development there was talk of 8 teams of 8 players fighting to accomplish objectives on HUGE maps and new gameplay modes the likes of which we have never seen.
In the end UT3 is the worst in the series, it's a throw back to UT2003 only worse because the graphics don't even stand out so much.
Screw you epic, UT3 is the one game I wish I downloaded rather than bought. - GiJoeBob, on 04/21/2008, -5/+29Start reading at the end of the thread. Epic didn't steal anything.
- MAGZine, on 04/22/2008, -7/+31dugg for pun.
- XtremeBug, on 04/21/2008, -4/+26Those two pictures are of the same map.
This is Epic's map:
http://images.gamersyde.com/gallery/public/8245/77 ... - TOBR, on 04/21/2008, -19/+39Well if Epic didn't steal or riped the layout why did they ban him the first place !?
Shouldn't they come clean and explain it to everyone!?
The decision of banning him without explanation only makes me and alot of people really think that they actually riped the map and now are trying to cover up up their ***** up. - smacksaw, on 04/21/2008, -2/+21Next time you should try installing it on your computer instead of an oral installation.

- troydoogle7, on 04/21/2008, -9/+25lol as soon as it gets to digg, they unban the guy and promise an investigation........
He even got personally unbanned by a VP of epic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Rein)
http://utforums.epicgames.com/showthread.php?t=610 ...
I can't help feeling a bit sad that the blatant ripoff of user generated content, has to get to digg before they do something.......Really Sad. - retrovertigo, on 04/21/2008, -0/+155000 hours? Seems a bit fanatical to me. You're too hardcore. Of course you're not going to like the newer version if you're spent that much time with it. My question though: if you spent 5000 hours with UT2k4 how did you at least spend more than 1 hour playing UT3?
- Testies, on 04/21/2008, -5/+20I will NEVER again download Epic games for free!!
Ever!!! - ha1f, on 04/21/2008, -2/+17The issue has been resolved.

- daizaru, on 04/21/2008, -1/+15He used epic's textures and everything. He's mad that it's a boat in the arctic... that's the stolen idea. The layout is different, most everything is different except the idea of a boat... in the arctic. The guy was being an idiot, probably deserved the ban but it only fooled people in believing there was any merit to this guys claim and basically "the digg effect" hit epic hard even when they didn't really deserve it... this time.
- CaptEnder, on 04/21/2008, -5/+19Ripped...it's not a fruit.
- Myonosken, on 04/21/2008, -0/+12Because its all stock scenery and models.
- teamr, on 04/21/2008, -4/+16Epic needs to hire a PR department pronto. They've contracted a major case of foot-in-mouth disease over the last few months.
- Jhiaxuz, on 04/21/2008, -2/+14This franchise is mostly built around the work of modders and map makers. Without them, UT would cease to be what it is today. Hell, you need mods to make UT III a decent game.
- Abomonog, on 04/21/2008, -3/+15I read some of the discussions surrounding the maps and you're not looking at the whole map.
The problem is that both maps use the single ship mesh that came with U3. If that mesh is the whole map then no one is guilty of anything. Epic made the mesh for something else and the user put it in an arctic ocean. So what if Epic eventually did the same thing? Ships in oceans are so unoriginal that there are old Quake3 players signing up for the lawsuits. - PurpleSfinx, on 04/21/2008, -7/+19...Look at the pictures, people. They're just both set on boats at night. They look very, very different.
- goblindegook, on 04/21/2008, -0/+12That's not a very good analogy. It's not like most filesharers out there are taking credit for someone else's work, or reselling the music they download, or both.
- flashback99, on 04/21/2008, -1/+12No, Epic destroyed UT3 sales.
- xNIBx, on 04/21/2008, -1/+12They betrayed the master race and joined the consoloids, that's what happened.
- spammishking, on 04/21/2008, -0/+10Thanks for the links, I had a feeling there was more to the story than the OP's thread
- x1soundgarden1x, on 04/21/2008, -3/+13This kid clearly doesn't understand US copyright law, or the user agreement he agreed to when he installed UT3. Now, if he had made a map of this idea and Epic copied it verbatim, he'd have at least a moral standpoint and could justly complain that he didn't get any credit. But as is, this kid doesn't have a leg to stand on and I'm glad they banned his dumbass. He isn't entitled to any money, and credit, and any use of their forums. Buried for stupidity.
- Jektal, on 04/21/2008, -2/+12Likewise!
I absolutely loved UT2k4, and really wanted to love UT3, but I just couldn't get into it. They took out a the Assault gameplay mode (and I think Survival?), a lot of classic maps (Morpheus, 2Face/Facing Worlds), and IMO ruined Onslaught with the addition of those spheres. Little balancing things like guns I can forgive (although I still kind of miss the ole Impact Hammer from 99) since it's a new version, but UT3 feels cheap and stripped down from 2k4, and not in a good way.
I'm just hoping that they follow their lead with 2k3/2k4 and make this an "engine release" like 2k3, and then in another year or so release a proper version of the game with everything in place (like 2k4). - Tyrghast, on 04/21/2008, -4/+14Maybe it's only cus i scored my copy of UT3 for free through my college, but it's a fun shooter. Sure it doesn't have some of the things that made 2k4 special, but it doesn't subtract from the overall experience. But one thing I really love about the latest rendition of the unreal engine is how easy it is on your machine. It looks great and doesn't stress the hardware.
- Droniac, on 04/21/2008, -2/+12Sure, Epic screwed up quite a lot about UT3. But don't forget that UT2004 was hardly flawless either and that many people consider that game to be wholly inferior to UT in the very same way that you consider UT3 to be wholly inferior to UT2004.
The truth is that, in terms of weapon balance, UT2004 is entirely outclassed by UT3. Realistically, if you look at which weapons are used by players at any decent level of skill in either game, then in UT2004 it'll be 90% lg/shock. A fact you should know quite well after 5000 hours play. If you do the same for UT3, then you'll notice nearly all weapons being used in relatively equal measure.
As for the maps: I do not recall many maps in UT2004 that were particularly outstanding. Both games feature loads of maps which are all about graphics and just not about gameplay. UT2004 certainly did not do any better in this regard, in fact: moving about maps was more difficult in UT2004 thanks to the higher numbers of annoying fancy meshes you'd get stuck behind.
I'm not saying UT3 is a good game, nor that Epic did a good job. They certainly did not.
Just try not to be blinded by fanboyism as you compare the two - they're both inferior to UT anyway ;)
Oh and judging by the comparison screenshots further in that forum topic it looks like the Epic maps is nothing like the user-made map. In that regard calling it stealing would mean the user-made map was stolen from CoD 4, which was in turn stolen from a dozen other games, which in turn stole it from Epic's very own UT (DM-Galleon I believe?). Come on - it's a ship at sea. How many variations of that are you gonna have? Not many. -
