- ubergmr, on 10/12/2007, -3/+47i wonder why sierra is doing this? are they hopeing to sell more copies of F.E.A.R?
- Mortabus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32Looks like the same strategy that they used for Enemy Territory with Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Now they have ET Quake Wars Coming out as one of the most anticipated shooters.
- jamelt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+26They are doing this to promote F.E.A.R. 2
- avester, on 10/12/2007, -3/+28it's all a clever conspiracy with sierra and hardware manufactures to get users to upgrade
dun dun dun!!! - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -1/+22That's so weird that they'd do this. Maybe the game wasn't doing well financially. I thought it was really cool though. Love the slo-mo and gore effects, as well as the audio slo-mo and speed up effects.
Also, the scary crap was practically watching a movie, except more horrifying since you were in control.
Anyone else think they ripped some of the HL source code when it was leaked? - Axon77, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22Yeah, its probably related to the fact that the game sales for FEAR have slown down. So, they might as well release the MP portion free, build a huge following then sell the heck out out of the sequel.
- wrxpert, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21This is very cool. Kudos Sierra.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11Why not do this? Look how successful Counterstrike has been for Valve. Or Enemy Territory for id.
I haven't tried FEAR's multiplayer yet, but if it is good and gets a decent-sized community, FEAR 2 is going to get gauranteed sales.
I think it's going to come to a point where companies do more free promotions like this, or hire dedicated gamers to keep the servers busy. A multiplayer game without players, even if it is good, is going to fail.
Look at games like Counterstrike again. Are they so successful because they're really THAT much better than the competition, or because of the community?
Another factor is that some of these games that have become accept as defacto standards for multiplayer are being used as a platform in pro gaming and clan gaming competition. Brand new or obscure games aren't used, even if they are good. - jetpig, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12i didn't like fear. the demo was awesome, but the full game was repetitive (the effects were cool the first 5 times, but after 10 minutes and 15 times using it it got boring) the levels were poorly designed (why the hell were there so many bare walls?) and generally it wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. i find Prey far more fun, half life 2 (the orignial or the episodes) are also quite a bit better, and a ton more varied. i dunno i guess fear wasn't that enticing.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12"Anyone else think they ripped some of the HL source code when it was leaked?"
Not likely, given it looks much better, graphically, than HL2 did. - MOJIRA, on 05/17/2008, -0/+7@ jamelt, do you have any proof? FEAR 2? It's a little soon, are they using the same engine?
Oh wait, do you mean the FEAR expansion pack? Maybe, you're right.
Either way, it's a smart move. I can't recall any major studio releasing a game for free - this could be a good test and definate good PR. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Link to full article... http://www.fearfans.com/newsitems/103/
- supanaturalhigh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Too bad my laptop does not meet the requirements for RAM and the amount of MB for the video card... :-(
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think most people buying the game are doing it to experience the excellent single player mode ;)
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6
"Anyone else think they ripped some of the HL source code when it was leaked?"

If you've played their past games, like NOLF, you can tell it is an upgrade of that engine. Primarily, they added shader effects, physics support (the same Havok engine HL2, Doom 3, and Unreal use) and a new animation system, along with an improved AI. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Who was the tard that says multiplayer sucks? Get real... Sorry you cant hang with the best but the multiplayer was always incredibly fun...
This is just crazy and looking forward to it!!! - mhmm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is gonna get possible. As we know, any free multiplayer game on the net becomes huge. Even better is the fact that this game doesnt suck like the other free games.
- PokeSmot, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Sierra is well known for making past games downloadable for free.
- figvam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5"Primarily, they added shader effects, physics support (the same Havok engine HL2, Doom 3, and Unreal use) and a new animation system, along with an improved AI."
Doom3 doesn't use Havok, id has developed its own physics engine. - borninda818, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8me too. My poor lappy can barely play cs1.6
- dolphumous, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Fan base is everything.
- artaxerxes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Indeed. This is the positive repercussion of RTCW:Enemy Territory's success.
Unlike the situation where Splash Damage released essentially half a finished game (i.e. the multiplayer component only) to earn community good will. In this case Sierra has already sold X copies, and one hopes broke even. Now they might get some more sold from folks looking for the single player after playing multiplayer. In addition to, as noted by the insightful poster above, getting everyone psyched for the eventual sequel just like Quake Wars:ET - MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Nice move by Monolith or Sierra or whoever is in charge of this sort of thing. Everyone loves free games, especially if they are half decent - just look at Enemy Territory.
Admittedly I haven't played the FEAR MP since it was in beta but I remember it being pretty good for ***** 'n' giggles.
"Does this mean we'll have to agree to VU Games spam?"
Just sign up with a temporary e-mail address. Plenty of sites supply them. - Ollin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess they see that ET is still very very popular with the crowd because of the fact is free. When you think about it, this is a real good way to build up a fanbase for future games. Give them something free and profit big later :D
- super_spyder, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5or expansions
- ilovenicotine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It's in the title of the page here you ass. Look up. I guess I should say, scroll up because you're probably looking at your ceiling right now.
- imhigh, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Standalone, Hence FREE
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I wish they would do the same for the Tribes series again.
- appidydafoo, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Well, this is actually a pretty good idea... as you know, with most games that sell in the range FEAR there can be a sharp decline in multiplayer presence (servers and players) once the initial buzz wears out... in all reality, the experience they sell in the box and advertise for is the single player campaign, but what everyone comes back for (in terms of engine longevity, mods, etc) is multiplayer. I think they want a community to be able to take root in this franchise and I can't think of a better way to get players motivated than giving them the entire multiplayer component for free - even if I don't think it's particularly impressive!
- sunyata322, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4They did that before with tribes? Seems a little odd because Tribes used to be solely MP, although that changed (kinda) with Vengeance. Anyways,, I picked up Vengeance a few months ago at Fry's for only $10, not bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm having trouble figuring something out here..
Do you have to own a retail copy of FEAR to play this free multiplayer thing.. or will it just be a free game to download like America's Army? - Tochi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sierra has always been one of the more customer orriented publishers... I think they even have a policy that they will send you free backup copies of a game you've purchased if your copies break or get ruined somehow.
{edit}Bleh the reply button for the post below me put my reply on the post above it... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This is not to promote "FEAR 2". It is likely to promote the expansion pack, which I believe is NOT MADE BY THE ORIGINAL DEVELOPERS. The devs lost the rights to the "F.E.A.R." name, but have control over all the characters and stuff. "FEAR" 2 will own the expansion pack.
- Muncher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This makes me very happy, because I loved the F.E.A.R. multiplayer demo. I might buy the singleplayer game anyway, though.
- cyberghost232, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2why bitch about something that's going to be FREE!
- LazyBoy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2great move on sierras part.
- kontact, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nice! I remember playing the multiplayer demo, it was so much fun.
Best news i've read all day. :) - razicop, on 04/18/2008, -0/+1ya, its working...thanks!
- bdub92, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya, if you look at the main page you can see links to the new expansion pack coming out, as long as the 360 version coming out, this is defenitly a great move by Sierra to get a following behind the game.
- Lono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1so where is it?
12:20 ET and no link to the download yet - asmodeus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't say they're the most generous. id and many other companies have released the source code of their older games under the various open source licenses, which is one of the main reasons I'll buy any id game as soon as it comes out (provided my hardware can run it at the time, of course). But what Sierra have done with some of their games is a lot more generous than most other games companies.
- OBKenobi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1
Sierra has always been one of the more customer orriented publishers...
Isn't Sierra now under completely different management? - Crass22, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4SWEET, when i illegally downloaded this game several months ago the only thing i was missing was the online componet. what fools.
- theventure, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3 Why do people keep digging down people who say the multiplayer isn't all that good?
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is crazy only like a week or two since its been out and it keeps getting crazier and crazier, I've just downloaded 3 mods for original f.e.a.r. but its made for online play and it luckily works on this game f.e.a.r. combat. Its just doom and duke nukem put into the f.e.a.r. world. Also, a little gun mod that adds g36c to the game (my fav weapon). This game is the *****, I can't wait to get enough money, possibly I'll buy it when the expansion pack comes out, so the game's price itself will drop.
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Nice but Im still going to buy a copy just for the intense single player mode, multiplayer is alright not too much of my likings, but single player is instense especially how its so subliminal. Kudos though and I hope theres something new to it instead of same multiplayer of disc copy hoping like new maps and since it came out last year, just a little bit more refined graphics.
- NismoDrift, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1wow 12:26 eastern I registered like 7 days ago and still no combat key or download in my email no change on the site what is up with that?.
- MMilitia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Could be because if they don't like it they shouldn't have bothered reading this article. No one really cares about their opinions.
- Lono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1site now down @ 12:49
scratch that 12:50 back up - Lono, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1links for cd key and dowload up, but broken @ 12:52....
