- shyguy01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Thanks again to Engadget - they've given us so much console info over the last few weeks
Great job guys, and we're all a little jealous that you didn't have to queue to get yours ;) - Lobut, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10O.o
Hack this thing so you can pay less for software?
What a wonderful euphemism for saying you don't wanna pay anything. Cheapskate =P. - aussia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7this is a random question, but has anyone else noticed their cat or dog being really, really interested in the Wii?
- bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, that's what Nintendo expected. You see, they don't market it to gamers only, but they want to appeal everybody: be it the little children or your grandparents... And apparently, also the pets...
- stuartcow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Answered a lot of questions I had about the Wii...
- bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I believe, technically all that is doable with some firmware upgrades. Keyboards, mice, USB HDDs, avi playback, ...
Considering it has a 24/7 connection I wouldn't be surprised (but happy) to wake up one day and have my Wii support something new :) - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4It seems like the GameCube part of the Wii is very very separate from the Wii. I doubt you'll get these features.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I was really hoping for .avi support. Too bad.
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Oh. Well, the "predicted words" feature is nice. Press the upside-down eject icon (above backspace) on the keyboard to turn that on.
- unloud, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Everything electronic is using "neat little mechanisms"....I suggest that you stay away from modern entertainment mediums if you are so afraid of them failing.
It's just a chance you have to accept in liking electronics.....Personally, I trust Nintendo hardware. - Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3You can hit the "home" button on the wiimote and it'll bring up a menu. From this menu you can click on the wiimote image in the bottom-left corner which will bring up the wiimote's settings. You can adjust the wiimote speaker volume here.
I tried turning my volume down while playing Zelda and no matter how low I set the volume it was still as loud as ever, although the speaker in the wiimote isn't used all that much. I then turned the volume down to 0 (zero) and it quit making sounds. I didn't notice whether or not the sound effects then came out of the TV or not, though. Maybe someone else can verify that or not. - ICSU, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3more like keyboard/mouse support
- StickyShoez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3So after the 47 hour wait at my local Wal-mart, I got my Wii and went home to play it. I have to say I really wanted the blue light to be on all the time....but I know that if it was, I would just get sick of it. Still, I wish there was the option to do so.
P.S. I love this machine. Excellent. - Koray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm pretty sure there will be a firmware release that will allow keyboards. I think the issue is drivers, but they should be able to whip up a generic driver that would accept key input (who cares if you can't use your stupid "email" and "media" buttons?).
Then again, they just may create their own keyboard and charge 50 bucks for it. :/ - mtvkilledusall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3B button can be used as backspace.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, but more mechanical parts = more parts to break. I understand where you're coming from Unloud, but I also see where ohgr is coming from as well.
- theaceoffire, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Trust with a grain of salt. Still, Nintendo has been good about taking care of their users...
- shit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The lack of USB keyboard support really sucks. Even the smallest messages are a chore to type.
Also, is there a quick erase? Whenever I click a wrong letter I have to traverse the board to backspace. Hey, about time I look at that manual, I guess. - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I guess theoretically they could have an update that adds additional video format support, but who knows if they actually will.
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2in response to their #15 about not knowing when the batteries will die, when you click on the "home" button it should show 4 batteries across the bottom of the screen. The more juice the batteries have the more of that controller's battery icon is filled in with gradient lines.
Not sure how accurate it is, but it's better than not having any idea when they'll die. - SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's weird that you mention that. I have one cat that typically ignores whatever it is that I'm doing, but when I was unboxing the Wii, she was right there checking things out. Although once it was all hooked up, the cat went back to ignoring me again. Maybe the Wii boxes were next to pet food in the devliery truck.
- OpCzar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Kind of difficult to form an opinion on a story like this though...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Their response was: "We don't see why not." and went on to say they didn't get any messages saying they couldn't, but it's not verified.
Maybe it depends on the game. I can't try at the moment or I'd pop in Wind Waker, but I know Paper Mario wouldn't go without a GC memory card in there.
Can anyone else confirm/deny this? - grumbel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wondering if one can at least copy savegames from GC memory card to internal memory and back. From what I have seen one can access them from the Wii menu, however not sure about the copy part.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Can you use Wii game save slots for GC games?"
I wondered about this too, but Paper Mario complained there was no memory card to be found, so any progress would not be saved. I at least figured the Wii would create some sort of space on the internal storage and trick the GC system into thinking one was actually there..
Unless I'm missing something. - unloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But this type of drive has been around a while. Similar drives were in the 2002ish Powerbooks and were then removed because people rarely use mini discs in normal computing. It's not like these have never been used before, and in exchange for more moving parts you get backward compatability with gamecube games.
- coheedcollapse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wow, incredibly fair and balanced considering all the hype that Wii's had lately. I expected "OMG MOVING = COOL!" but they actually told it like it is.
I'm getting the Wii soon enough, and I'm glad Engadget was around to answer all of the questions I had so I'll know what to expect. Cool stuff. - styromaniac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1New Question: Can the remote's speaker be turned off so the sound comes through the TV?
- PathDaemon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This person fails at pairing BT devices with a Mac. He shouldn't have let the computer generate a passkey, which won't work on headless devices like the Wiimote.
- schurkenstadt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great! I has WPA! If only the DS could do WPA, too ...
- pageld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm with you on the cat and the box. She just wouldn't leave it alone. Then of course when I'm playing she had to sit right infront of the sensor bar. Keep this in mind, you can't play with a fat ass cat sitting infront of the sonsor bar.
- Bloodwine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wish the Wii did 802.11g so I could need my home wifi network in pure-G mode instead of mixed mode to allow 802.11b, but that is a very minor gripe.
- dslartoo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Great FAQ. I have no plans to pick up a Wii at present but that definitely answered a lot of questions I had about it.
- velvet396, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1actually my dog gave it a good sniff & stare from about 6 inches back, and he's never really interested in anything...
- robbiedo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nintendo had had this weird habit of incremental updates with their handhelds. I wonder if there will be multiple versions of the Wii?
- pageld, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0At least in my limited experience with my system, the card cannot be copied to the internal memory. It just can be copied to another memory card. Now I need to buy a memory card for my saves on my brother in laws gamecube.
- djbnice1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0i played wii sports yesterday, and it was a great. it's not graphics that made it so enjoyable, and don't get me wrong, the graphics are decent and get the job done. but, when we were doing the bowling or any of the other sports games, we actually were standing up and going through the actual motions. if developers keep things fresh and give gamers new concpts of wii-mote use down the road...then we'll be happy for a long time...djbnice1
- ZeroMP, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Yeah .MOV is a god-awful format.
The last time I actually opened a .MOV file I threw up on my keyboard (all on the lower left, caps/shift, zxc area) and I had to replace it. Now I don't open .MOV files anymore.
I definately don't want to throw up on my Wiimote. - Rice, on 10/12/2007, -11/+7Now, please. Someone hack this thing so that we can pay for less software.
- Domestiques, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2hmm, if I didnt know better I would say that nintendo are having a concerted effort to make sure that at least one wii story appears on the main page hourly in favour of wii.
