- TweakNF, on 01/29/2008, -5/+201Alright. This is probably my favorite book of all time, but if they make this into a ***** game I'm going to be really disappointed. It has so much potential to be addicting. Laser tag in zero g? However after looking at Chair's website, There's one hell of a chance this is going to suck.
- ncraig, on 01/29/2008, -2/+161game?
lets get a movie rolling! - Moskie, on 01/29/2008, -4/+108Is this really what people think the book is about? "Laser tag?"
Isn't it about a kid coming to terms with who he is? And finding some form of solace in the fact that he was responsible for so much death?
I'd also like to point out that Ender's "game" referred to in the title isn't laser tag, or space flight simulation. It was the fantasy game that taught how to face his fears....
all right, i'll shut up now. - Marvelboy, on 01/29/2008, -1/+64Just remember, the enemy's gate is down.
- bryant, on 01/29/2008, -0/+52This is either going to be incredible, or *****.
I'm going to be very pissed off if it's *****, which it probably will be. - WinnemuccaMac, on 01/29/2008, -1/+49I'd love to see a Risk/Age of Empires type game based on the Ender's Shadow (Bean) series. It would have factions in India, China, Thailand, Brazil, Muslim Nations and the International Fleet. Also, it would be made out of Awesome.
- Gryffydd, on 01/29/2008, -2/+35This is one of my favorite books of all time, so I look at this with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. I have a hard time imagining how it can become a really good game, the book was really about people and relationships, not about the battle room or the simulations.
- Jawsh91, on 01/29/2008, -0/+29"...today announced their partnership to create the first-ever video games inspired by the legendary “Battle Room,” featured in the beloved literary classic, Ender’s Game."
They're making a game based on the battle room, not the story of the book, RTFA... - naugrim, on 01/29/2008, -7/+35Yet another stab at ruining a fondly remembered bit of nostalgia from my formative years. Way to go *****.
- GSullivan, on 01/29/2008, -3/+31Recalling how the book ended, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable playing this 'game'.
- Mr.Gone, on 01/29/2008, -0/+28You remember back when people would make movies and games and TV shows that weren't based on a book or movie or game or TV show that came before them? Thos were good times.
- nospinhere, on 01/29/2008, -0/+26Where the hell is the Movie? That is what I want to know.
- godspoken, on 01/29/2008, -0/+22I don't think the "game" in the title is referring to the fantasy game. In Enders Shadow, Bean refers to the final battle as "Ender's game".
- Coug, on 01/29/2008, -0/+21I'm sick of hearing people bitch about things making the front page on low number diggs, we all know the algorithm changed, and every time someone says this ***** about a story the story is worth reading anyway. As far as I can tell the new algorithm is doing just fine. So everybody quit ***** complaining, find some real proof that something is wrong with the algorithm other than it having less diggs than normal.
- noodlez, on 01/29/2008, -0/+20there's basically no chance that this is going to live up to any expectations, no matter what form (especially crappy follow-the-movie style) they do it in.
- bigdoof, on 01/29/2008, -1/+19I don't think anyone thinks the book is about "laser tag," but it's the most obvious thing to make a game about, aside from controlling the invasion fleet. Making a game based around the fantasy game would be a trippy, yet ***** game, and running around avoiding getting a beatdown by your classmates would be equally boring.
- CaptainM4d, on 01/29/2008, -0/+17I grew up reading the Ender's Game series, so they better not ***** it up. Actually, I can't see how they can make it into a decent game. The book is so powerful.
- AnarchyReigns, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15From the Wikipedia article:
"The latest author-written screenplay was finished and submitted to Warner Brothers by Orson Scott Card in May 2003. David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were later signed to write a new script, working closely with Wolfgang Petersen. However, as of December 15, 2005, all previous attempts to write a script had been dropped. Card himself has announced he will be writing a new script not based on any previous one, including his own.
While Ender's Game is officially in pre-production, according to IMDB[6], the movie rights to the book is still looking for a financier.[7] Nothing has been released on the content of the approved script, or casting, however based on information from Orson Scott Card's previous scripts, it will be a fusion between Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, both of which take place in the Battle School at the same time, but the former from Ender's point of view, and the latter from Bean's point of view." - Rhix, on 01/29/2008, -0/+15At first I thought "Awesome". Then I realized it could not possibly be as cool as reading it, and I'll only be letdown.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+14i think it's a lost opportunity for valve.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+13kids, battle room, video game.. jack thompson is on the case!
- tibbon, on 01/29/2008, -0/+12I'm from OSC's hometown, and I've heard for the past 10 years about a movie on and off from people pretty close to him (his family, church members, friends, etc). I'm starting to think that we'll see, "The Day the Clown Cried" first. Maybe we'll see a game in 2025
- Hickeroar, on 01/29/2008, -3/+13Agreed. :-p It was definitely one of the WEIRDER sci-fi series' I've ever read. Not so much the first book, but the subsequent ones where they get into "other things." You can kinda see at some points where Card draws from his Mormon beliefs for ideas in the story. I really enjoyed most of the books.
I've still got to give the "best ever" title to Alastair Reynolds though. - NoodleGuy, on 01/29/2008, -0/+10OSC is notoriously picky about any adaptations to his works. This is one primary reason there hasn't been an Enders Game Movie made yet. OSC insists that it is done right or not at all. I think this has potential to be good.
- LetsGoHawks, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9The only problem with a movie is.... the book is about kids. So Hollywood would make it a kid movie rather than just trying to make a good movie. As an adult, I'd be rather disappointed by that.
Plus, it's Hollywood. They have a tendency to turn good books into *****. - venir, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9Don't forget The Matrix.
- Talonkarrde, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9I'm actually fairly disappointed. I think an RTS based on the Ender's shadow series and the FPE and their conquest would be nice, but I always envisioned Ender's Game as being, at the least, two separate games - one of the Battle Room and individual squad command, and one of the simulator and controlling fleets to defeat the bugger intelligence.
The first one would presumably be some variant of a FPS with squad command, except in zero-G, obviously, and hopefully with really good AI. The simulator, if possible, should be pretty much as the book describes, with three-D wireframes representing the ships and a gradual (but hellish) learning curve. Something like the zoom-mode in the Homeworld series would be nice, except with more detail than just dots, of course.
The likelihood of either of these games being good is low - and lower than a small independent studio is developing it. No offense to Chair and Provo, Utah, but I imagined that this would require the resources of a company more like Blizzard. - dubloe7, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9ender's game refers to many things, not just one. the whole book is about games, from 'buggers and astronauts' with peter to the invasion sequence.
- rupric, on 01/29/2008, -0/+9If I remember this book correctly I would be playing a video game about playing a video game that is really happening but I didn't know it was really happening but in real life I know it's not really happening???
- Zakalwe2, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9You're off the cool list forever.
- FredFredrickson, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9The author's personal ideologies aside, it's really a good book (the first one is the best). And this is coming from a liberal artist.
- ThinkBox, on 01/29/2008, -0/+8The Enemy's Gate is Down!
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -1/+9Can't wait to hear Jane.
- hablabla, on 01/29/2008, -1/+8"The "Ender's Game" series was bad writing at best, psychologically creepy and embarrassing at worst"
Uh, the critics don't agree with you...
1986 HUGO and NEBULA Award winner- Ender’s Game
1987 HUGO and NEBULA Award winner- Speaker for the Dead
1992 HUGO Award Nominee - Xenocide - Neticule, on 01/29/2008, -0/+7Im wiggin out man!! ;)
- WoundedCow, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Ender's Game, Speaker for the Dead, Ender's Shadow, Xenocide, etc...oh my GOD! I think I just pooed a little hearing this. Never in all my reading have I enjoyed reading a series of books, including my own! I met Card at a writer's conference and how that man writes is the same as the way he talks to gushing young writers like myself. Well done! Oh, and I read Ender's Shadow so many times, I now quote from it on occasion to people just so they look at me like I know something significant.
- FloorModel, on 01/29/2008, -1/+7sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!!!
and a movie would be okay too. but starring who? - Bilabrin, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Just do what I do when they make ***** sequels/spinoffs/movies/games....Etc. Pretend they don't exist. Denial is a pewerful thing my friend!
For instance did you know that there were in reality no sequals to any of the following movies:
The Never Ending Story
Poltergiest
Darkman
Lawnmower man - heffae, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Just because I disagree A LOT with his politics doesn't mean I can't find his Fiction moving and brilliant. OSC also did refer to Serenity as the best Sci-Fi movie ever so there are some things I can agree with him on.
- kickcows, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Ender's Shadow is an excellent book.
- AttilaD, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6Its from back when titles were clever and deep, not just "Blank of the Blank"
- WhiskeyTango, on 01/29/2008, -0/+6If I remember correctly, Chair is actually the remnants of the team that made Advent Rising, which was another OSC collaboration, and when you got past a few minor game play glitches, was an absolutely incredible, epic story line, and pretty great game play to boot. So this gives me some hope that Chair may actually have the abilities to make a decent game out of this. I'm just not sure that there's really enough "gameplay-esque" content in Enders Game to really make a killer gaming experience. Here's to hoping it's handled with care.
- Mystyrys, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Wow. I was wondering when someone would get around to making a video game of this story. With the video game being such an important plot element, it was only a matter of time until someone made a real video game about the events in this story.
I first read it when it was a short story in Analog: Science Fiction/Science Fact magazine. Then again when it was expanded into a full length novel. I've read the entire series I don't know how many times and now my sons are reading the books. I love Ender Wiggins and his whole family and the Piggies and ....
I hope it makes it to launch. I'd play it. - jimb0, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Ender's Game is one of my favorite books. I don't know how you could design an effective game based off the battle room. Sure, a battle room simulation would be fun for a few times. I just don't know how they could create an entire game experience. Much of the book is what Ender is thinking, which won't come off into a game. What if they created the dream sequences as playable, that would be trippy. I am hoping they come up with something cool. This comes from someone who actually kind of enjoyed Advent Rising.
- omegaredIX, on 01/29/2008, -1/+6Please god no. Do not ***** this book up. I pray they NEVER EVER come out with a major motion picture of this movie because it will suck balls. Hollywood will do what hollywood does best and throw in a bunch of stupid ass hollywood must haves and totally ruin the series. same with a video game please the book is PERFECT as it is. I can guarantee they will ***** this game up no matter what. Unless they are ready to dump millions upon millions into the game to make it perfect i highly suggest and hope that they stop this project and all future ender projects. The ONLY company i could remotely give even a little trust to make this a successful game is Blizzard. And im pretty sure this is the last thing they have on their mind. God this game is going to be so bad.
- heffae, on 01/29/2008, -0/+5Well it's basically an impossible book to write. The Hive Queen and the Hegemon essentially created a new religion for people. Writing it would be like writing the Necronomicon from the Lovcraftian stories. Nothing actually produced could even hope to live up to the myth required of it for the stories.
- llamaguy132, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4RTFA, they give you a link to the interview were Card explains all his video game ideas and answers most of your questions. This game will be based on the Battle Room, were kids are split up into Armies made up of small toons. Its going to be a strategy game based only on the battle room.
Card also wants to make many other games like the ones 80% of you are suggesting, but i think we can all agree this is the simplest to make and potently the most addicting. the link to the interview: http://news.filefront.com/gaming-todays-exclusive- ... - nonsequitor, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4I hope there's a Giant's Drink mini-game in there somewhere.
- inactive, on 01/29/2008, -0/+4have a feeling this is gonna be a strat not unlike starcraft and c&c where you sit in ender's seat to save the world from the buggers. i just hope the graphics kicks ass
