- essrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Most of this stuff has been argued elsewhere but I especially digg that this is from PBS (as opposed to an obviously biased gaming site)

PBS Woot....One of the last bastions of good tv! - rubbsdecvik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe old, but I've never seen it. Why is "old" news such a travesty to post? I'm sure there is something that was posted that you haven't seen before.
Anyway. I think that its a good post. Thanks... I'm using this site now when i have to do stuff for research papers.
Digg++ - Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"@trin: "You play any online game and tell me there is no social interaction."
I agree -- To a point. I don't know exactly how much you play online but I don't think "HAHA YOUR A NOOB FAG!!!11!1" and "***** YOU RETARD I PWNED JOO!!!1" count as social interaction. Your experience may vary; hell, you may be one of the people who talk like this all the time so who knows."
Nope, I'm one of those completely literate forum dwellers that randomly goes onto games like Ragnarok Online. About the only time I encounter people who are acting like that are the people going "healplx" or "buffplzkthx"
And ziekke, to the "Real World (tm)" it appears like that, which is why the article debunks that as a myth, it may be what it appears like, but a lot of people who do it can tell you its not the case. Although I do admit the social interaction in FPSs is. . . limited.
Oh, and on a sidenote, I honestly hate the underlining of people's names in Digg. "Trjn" becomes "trin" there's about a one pixel difference between the letter "i" and the letter "j", one that few people notice. - SVPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Finally someone who talks sense. I've been playing video games since I was 5, including all the gore-fests like DooM, GTA, Postal 2 etc. and I still cry during films and have never hit a person with the intention of injuring them since I was in high school about 8 years ago. If anything violent games help me vent my angst and make me less stressed and angry when I get annoyed with something or someone.
If I could dig this twice I would...
++digg - chicomdk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK so it's old but not everyone saw it I never saw this before I digg it :-)
- jpowell180, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg, these are very important points.
- rhino_rampant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Someone should send this to Jack Thompson...
- Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Cabazorro - I'm not blowing $300 for an X-Box 360. Does that mean I'm not a gamer, despite my Gamecube, my extensive library of PC games, and the video card upgrade I just ordered from Newegg? I know a LOT of girls who will happily play The Sims or Mario Kart. Gamer is not necessarily synonymous with "hard-core gamer."
Good article, on the whole. Yeah, it's mostly stuff I already know, but I think I'll keep the bookmark handy to shove down any anti-gamers' throats. Anyone have Hillary Clinton's e-mail address handy? - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Shameless plug alert....
I interviewed Henry on my podcast at www.thunderbirdsix.org. Good stuff. Both him an Ernest Adams were on the show. Episode 9. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@trin: "You play any online game and tell me there is no social interaction."

Do they not teach English any more in schools? - masterofshadows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2no the atari had games that were MUCH more fun than any modern system, why? they had virtually nothing to work with so it had to be fun otherwise it wouldnt sell.
- xenoputtss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I couldn't agree more with this article. I think i have learned alot from games, even more so on-line multiplayer games. To list some things that I may have improved on because of the games I play are:
How to manage large groups of people (i learned this by being an officer in both WoW guild and planetside...Im not saying i made good choices either, but I have learned what not to do)
That helping others with things they need may not pay out initially, but the returns come back later on.
That just adding more people to a problem does not help solve it, and may actually make it worse.
That when adding more people to a problem, there is a high cost to training those people to become part of a team.
Yeah, i know all my stuff is centered around the "team" but hey, its what I like to do.. - Kanani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0*claps*
This article is so on the mark on every point.
1. girls + games
*woot* fellow girl gamer!
girls who play video games= hawt !!
guys who watch me play video games, buy me clothes, games and the latest graphic cards = sxy bf !!
2. games are for kids
err.. not anymore
3. games make you violent/anti-social,
um.. no,

C'mon! You guys miss that sentence. Thanks for breaking my heart submitter. - essrog, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Probably discussed to death and mentioned on digg often enough, but:
"Everything Bad Is Good For You" by Steven Johnson
... does a pretty good job debunking pop myths about videogames. From the author of "Emergence" (also excellent) - ProSam, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I digg it. Even if it's old it's new to me and other people.
- drjones, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The crummy thing is my local PBS didn't pick it up. Would have taken time from Antiques Roadshow I suppose. Ah well.
Oh and if you think all gamers are buying 360s you are missing huge chunks of the gaming population. Just take 5 min and ask yourself how man man hours have been spent playing Final Fantasy and compare that to solitaire. Console gamers with money to burn are a small fraction of the market numerically, many many more people have played simple cel-phone games on the bus then will ever play perfect dark zero.
Besides, one questions if a mathematically significant sample of women would hang out with a spotty gamer goon khehe.
-drjones - Buddybot111, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Damn old spammers, iv never seen it before and I think its very good information. Maybe I'll print it out and show it to my dad, course he could argue the game was directly effecting my grades, which of course is true. Either way, nice article, + DIGG!
- matsiescruff, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i like this article a great deal...even if i already knew this stuff. (it's freaking common sense for some of it! why, oh, why can't Thompson see that?!)
digg. - ziekke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@MasherSCF - its a little more than disturbing the amount of mistrust people that spend little to no time educating themselves have in people who are educated. So many people assume that just because they don't understand something it means that nobody can. Thus it is a mystery only to be explained by people who can spread myths and conspiracies. I haven't seen this article before, and I'm very glad that there were sources cited for his information. I digg it.
- ziekke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@trin: "You play any online game and tell me there is no social interaction."
Most people that don't play online games, or don't play them with the idea that they are playing with other humans, don't realize that it is social interaction.
To the Real World(tm) you just look like someone spending all your time on your computer. They don't know you are talking ot and interacting with dozens of people every day. I can see how people can be misled into thinking that just because someone hangs out in MMOGs means they are completely antisocial. It is a different type of social interaction, definitely. However, to call it anti-social is just wrong. - firehydra2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, i never expected pbs to publish something like this...
- Trjn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I've heard when your playing a girl in any video game your supposed let them win...***** THAT, I wanna win! Did I mention I'm single?"
My girlfriend doesn't mind losing, she comes in expecting it, but it doesn't stop her enjoying playing.
@Cabazorro, you seem to be confused, buying a 360 does not make you a gamer, and playing a PSP in a restaurant, or around people trying to converse with you is reasonably rude, has nothing to do with social isolation, just bad manner. You play any online game and tell me there is no social interaction. . . aside from Mario Kart, or hell, just read the points he makes about that myth.
And also, they forgot myth #9: Nintendo games are for kids. - CaptSnuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"no the atari had games that were MUCH more fun than any modern system, why? they had virtually nothing to work with so it had to be fun otherwise it wouldnt sell."
So by that logic early silent films were much more enjoyable than modern movies? Maybe they tended to be more fun in the days of Atari (in your opinion), but certainly not because of the limited abilities of the developers. - SyDIGG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0in fine print:
Study is possible with grant from Activision. - MasherSCF, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I can just hear the response, "Who cares what these MIT eggheads think, they're part of the problem." The inherent mistrust that most Americans have of academia makes this paper almost worthless. Good read though...

I would buy a 360, but I'm smarter than that. ;) Seriously though, I started being a PC gamer a long time ago, but before that I even had a Sega Saturn and all of that *****.

http://fuh-q.com - MattZed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0heh, my gf plays smb3, doesnt mean shes hardcore.. other girls love mario kart on the ds..
i thought that it was crazy when they said that girls play video games, but now that i think of it, it might just be true. although i have yet to see a girl with their own console/gaming pc. but that doesn't mean that they don't like playing video games. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0**Girls do play video games** I've been playing since Super NES and have been pretty hard core about it. I even kick some guys asses playing Halo every now and again. I was even excited about the 360! I think they should research the issue of whether or not guys who play video games have healthy social interactions with girls...
- wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, most of this is kind of a "duh". Unfortunately with idiots like that Assembleyman Yee running around CA with the typical "don't confuse the issue with facts, my mind is made up" they continue to pass idiotic laws (which are being stuck down as fast as they are passed).
One note, though, the "girl gamer" bit. Yes, there are more than some think, but it is still overwhelmingly male. Even in "crossover" games like WoW the overwhelming proponderance of players are men (so much so that most players claiming to be female are assumed to be 53 year old overweight men until proven otherwise). - mistshadow2k4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"why, oh, why can't Thompson see that?!"
Because when people like him get to believe something they refuse to ever entertain the slightest shred of evidence that contradicts their belief. It's called obsession, and it's about time that we recognize that overly vehement, evidence-ignoring advocates like him of anything have mental problems. - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Cabazorro, you are confusing anecdotes with proof.
