- Ramzy, on 12/01/2007, -5/+94Let me just start off by saying that i never much liked Jeff Gertsman.
HOWEVER, the issue at hand is the fact that huge multi-national companies can now effectively control what score their games get. This, in essence, means that companies such as Microsoft Game Studios, EA games, Eidos, Ubisoft, and many more now have complete control over reviewers, as if they were their puppets.
What's more distressing is that this 'issue' may not be unique whatsoever. This may have happened many-a-time without the gaming public ever hearing about it. Which makes quite a bit of sense as there have been some "WTF?" reviews for certain games over the last few months (certain games scoring too high or too low)
The thing that annoys me the most is that now reviewers such as Alex Navarro, or any of the others on staff will be inclined to be less heavy handed when it comes to negatively reviewing a game. Which means in the end, viewers such as ourselves can nolonger really take the reviewers word for what it's worth.
Shame too... All this news came on the virge of me renewing my GameSpot Gold account. Suppose i won't be doing it now. - jggr, on 12/01/2007, -6/+91I just wish one of the two companies would grow a set and just admit what happened. I know that if the worst of the rumours are true, then admitting it is similar to admitting to your girlfriend that you cheated on her... Sure it's the right thing to do (admit it, not cheat), but you're still probably gonna end up being single. (Although we really can forgive a lot if we wanted to.... And being a big enough person to admit it sure goes a long way.)
But as of right now, I will not be buying this game (or any other Edios game) nor re-visiting Gamespot until the issue is cleared up.
Who's with me? - RichPowers, on 12/01/2007, -1/+55Imagine the great endorsement on the Kane&Lynch box: So awesome that we paid Gamespot to give it a great review!
- dansmeek, on 12/01/2007, -4/+51duke nukem forever?
- Betrayer, on 12/01/2007, -1/+37Hey DIGG admin... you now have another techie to swoop up and make part of REV.
love him or hate him at least we know JEFF is an honest reviewer, and has some followers.
You should call him up, SET UP A DIGG GAMING SECTION and have him do a weekly show (altho you will need several other (HOT) co-hosts to assist him) id recomend a panel of 3 reviewers with totaly different views on gaming. - wafflesomd, on 12/01/2007, -6/+33Maybe this will cause GS to lose credibility.... Wait, you can't lose what you don't have.
- docholliday101, on 12/01/2007, -1/+26Wow....gamespot has blocked user reviews for the Kane & Lynch game now...Down with Gamespot!! Down with EIDOS!! You've betrayed the gamers trust!!
- inactive, on 12/01/2007, -2/+26seen this in too many other places, but dugg for jeff.
- shahruz84, on 12/17/2008, -4/+28it seems as if the majority of video game-related companies are starting to get a little too commercialized with its securom rootkits, corrupt reviews, etc... props, however, to those who don't buy into these corrupt methods, such as Epic, who allow its players to play without any cd required in the drive, and no copy protection being installed onto the PC at all.
- reed311, on 12/01/2007, -0/+21Remember when you could actually return ***** games that you bought? Yeah, those were the times. Now you're stuck with those ***** games, unless you want to take $15 from Gamestop for a week old game.
- CrashnBrn, on 12/01/2007, -5/+26Guess what game I'm not buying?
No seriously.....guess..... - pronouncable, on 12/01/2007, -1/+21For some real fun, check the user reviews for the game out
http://tinyurl.com/2xbfts (long urls are cut off?)
Also, they're locked down as of now. - koheed, on 12/01/2007, -3/+22I love the guy for the review of Zelda on Wii. Everyone else seemed to think the game was the cat's ass. It was a very good game, but it didn't change my life. Good luck, Jeff. Hope to see you around.
- DavidGX, on 12/01/2007, -1/+17For anyone that actually wants this game I'd suggest renting or buying it USED. Eidos deserves no money whatsoever, not after this *****.
- GrimReeper, on 12/01/2007, -2/+16***** EIDOS/GAMESPOT!!
- norman619, on 12/01/2007, -0/+13So what's wrong with him speaking his mind? His job is to tell the fans of Gamestop.com what he thinks of a game. If he felt it was a POS you don't think he should tell us so? I'd have been pretty pissed if he watered down his review and I go buy it finding out it truly is a POS. Remember the only reason websites like this get ad revenue is because of people like us.
- tyler71, on 12/01/2007, -2/+14R.I.P. Gertsmann, you will be missed....
Nothing will ever replace your antics "On The Spot". - NathanielJ, on 12/01/2007, -2/+14Have you paid ANY attention to this situation, or do you just like jumping into things you have no clue about and calling others morons?
- Subvexer, on 12/01/2007, -4/+16Refer to the wisdom of Penny-Arcade, as always:
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/11/29 - SineCurve, on 12/01/2007, -0/+12Well, they have taken down Gerstmann's Kane&Lynch review at Gamespot. His other reviews are still up, though. Interesting.
Anyways, here's the review: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aBD0cUeeEQc - ahoyhoy, on 12/01/2007, -1/+11They just did the crappy PC port. Square is responsible for the genious
- nickj6282, on 12/01/2007, -0/+10Why not demand a refund? If they refuse, you can always get your bank/credit card company to do a chargeback.
- mrferg, on 12/01/2007, -1/+11I'm with ya, it'll be easy considering I don't own a single Eidos game and never trust reviews anyways.
- krabat, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9I'm so glad this happened. I wish people would realize these "gaming review websites" are mostly a place for companies to throw their money around to hype their games. They are like the Nintendo Power of the Internet. There are a few, like Penny Arcade, who have some balls and credibility, but they are very few and far between.
- active1x0, on 12/01/2007, -0/+9AMEN.
Side story - just bought Time Crisis 4 at Gamestop for $90. Asked them what the trade value was in case the game was a giant bag of ass.
Their reply? $28. - arcticblue, on 12/01/2007, -2/+11He died?
- tylerjames, on 12/01/2007, -1/+10Hello Kitty Island Adventure?
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9Martyrs can't be fat?
- DirtySnachez, on 12/01/2007, -2/+10I've always used them as a fairly reliable source of info and news, and probably still will.. but it'll always be in the back of my head now that this happened, and will probably read their reviews a lot more analytically from a marketing perspective than as an honest game(rs) review.
- Jadinlee, on 12/01/2007, -1/+9Gamespot just may become the next SOE in terms of fan outrage. I know I'll be getting my gaming news elsewhere (and happy to do so). And there is no way in h*ll I'll ever touch an Edios game again. Really dumb move that will do far more harm than the original review ever would have done. While not a huge fan of Jeff's... I'll certainly support him wherever he goes next. If any other gaming news sites or companies are out there I hope they're making Jeff an offer. He's golden right now.
- keviniskool, on 12/01/2007, -0/+8Big Rigs: Over the Road Racing
- krabat, on 12/01/2007, -1/+8That was mostly retards who were "mad" about 8.8.
- UtopiaInTheSky, on 12/01/2007, -0/+7http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/kanelynchde ...
- marvinmatthew, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6Why isn't anyone getting on Cnet's case? It seems like it would be logical.
- Tippis, on 12/01/2007, -1/+7No, just resting...
- jggr, on 12/01/2007, -5/+11Yes, yes I do. And apparently that's something special in this day and age. These people create and produce media for my entertainment. Know what I call people who don't pay for things they use? Thieves. Know what I call people who don't want to pay for something and expect the cost to be absorbed by others? Communists.
You're not a thief or a commie, are you? ;)
/Stipulation: Try and then buy is the only acceptable loophole. - Frostman3D, on 12/01/2007, -1/+7I'm going to watch this very carefully over the coming days. If this guy was fired for his review I'm boycotting Gamespot AND Eidos. It's not like either of them are worth a ***** to begin with, but I'll boycott them nonetheless.
- norman619, on 12/01/2007, -0/+6Yes. You got a phone. Use it.
- marvinmatthew, on 12/01/2007, -1/+7A message needs to be sent to game developers that threatening the gaming press is unacceptable.
Eidos deserves everything they get. - Glitchwerks, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5I have not played Kane & Lynch, nor will I ever. Reports from my friends say it is terrible, and Jeff was probably being generous when he gave the game a 6 out of 10. I was going to go out and see Hitman in the theater. I am going to download it now. I was highly anticipating the next Hitman game. I will not buy it now, until I find it in a bargain bin at a used video game store, which means Eidos won't see a penny. In fact, I don't think I'll be buying anymore Eidos games ever again.
I don't think this is a "free speech" discussion as it is one man deciding he's not going to be a corporate shill. It's too bad that these things are terminable, but they are, and Gamespot had every right to do so. We, the consumers, have every right to voice our opinion on this matter by choosing with our wallets. Have your Gamespot account deleted. Don't visit their website ever again. Don't buy Eidos games.
Of course, while I don't feel this is a freedom of speech issue entirely, it does reek of questionable ethics, as major news outlets manipulate what you see and hear, all the while being guided by corporations with their own agenda. This has been going on for decades. Time to wake up. - staticneuron, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5Honestly, I don't like the guy either but I saw his review and even if I may not agree with his review there was nothing wrong with the review. His tone was that of someone that is dissapointed in a promising games. And he even points out the features he thinks would be special but then he hands it to the veiwer ad a complete package and says it is subpar. Dammit.... that was a good video review. What the companies should do is take heart and then fix the issues. i am going to rent the game for the story and to see how bad it is (cant be worse than the new soldier of fortune right?) but as far as gamestop goes... my trust has been waning greatly because of their seemingly loaded reviews for all three companies. I am done with them.
- AngelicRaver, on 12/01/2007, -0/+5Edios should have made a Freedom Fighter's sequel.
- jellygraph, on 12/01/2007, -2/+7i see, so you would grade a game by its graphics and how many consoles its been released on... and not the game and gameplay itself.
- chkdg8, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4Freedom of speech is going down the ***** tubes and for all of you who deny it's happening, at least pay attention to what's playing out right here. I would love to hear what Jeff Gertsman has to say about the rest of the journalism industry and not just on the gaming front. This is almost reminiscent of a mini Operation Mockingbird. Read it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Mockingbird ... hopefully before they edit the information.
- alphaeno, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4If he was fired for being a douche, then it would be ok. But people are saying he was fired because he gave a sponsored game a bad review and the sponsors withdrew a lot of money from the site and so the "douche" was fired. Its not affecting just him, but all reviewers. This is bad news for us, the readers and video game players who rely on unbiased and honest reviews.
- delmar14, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4So long as there is demand for unbiased reviews, there will always be at least one objective game review site out there.
- Richandler, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4Why does anyone here go to a mainstream media source?
- JudgeMonkey, on 12/01/2007, -0/+4I generally don't read reviews too much myself at all, but this is seriously messed up. Don't think anyone can disagree with that.
- gypsi, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5i've never been impressed with cnet's "reviews" in text or video. i look at them and i'm not sure what the hell i'm looking at - it's like advertising copy.
- CrashnBrn, on 12/01/2007, -1/+5damn....you got it......
