- duggtodeath, on 07/11/2009, -1/+84Why not just give the game to GameSpot to review? They rate games on a scale of 7 to 10 as long as you buy ads for the entire site.
- GhettoHmbrglr, on 07/12/2009, -0/+52And if they don't, people get fired.
- gcnaddict, on 07/12/2009, -0/+33Wouldn't be the first. They were tampering ratings with Kane & Lynch as well.
We still remember that GameSpot fiasco, right? - rwiggum, on 07/12/2009, -0/+25Jeff Gerstmann says hi.
- OSXpert, on 07/12/2009, -0/+25Apparently you were in a coma when the movie "Batman and Robin" came out in theaters. In any event, I'm jealous that you didn't have to see it.
- FirstCuts, on 07/11/2009, -1/+25I find this totally believable. How many BAD reviews leak out early?
- Snakedal337, on 07/12/2009, -0/+19I'll just wait for the Giant Bomb review.
- Branchex, on 07/11/2009, -0/+18You can't bribe someone once then ask for the benefit of the doubt on the issue the next time around.
- AnimZero, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15Who then form their own website which puts the old one to shame: http://www.giantbomb.com/
- loneraver, on 07/12/2009, -0/+15And 90% of the rest of the staff quits out of disgust.
- RyomaNagare, on 07/12/2009, -4/+17This is a hard one, on one hand this is EIDOS, they've done this many times before.
on the second hand its the ***** batman. how can it suck? - BREZZZ, on 07/12/2009, -0/+6Overhyping batman on the internet? It could be possible.
- Urbanninja622, on 07/12/2009, -5/+10I'm still going to buy the game, it's ***** Batman.
- JediPilot, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5I thought Batman Returns for the SNES was pretty good.
- cyrix, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5Hah. "It's powered by pancakes, booze, and viewers like you." My kind of place.
- MimedBaboon, on 07/12/2009, -1/+6Ahem - Batman and Robin.
- rwiggum, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5It must have been a long coma, considering he clearly missed every Batman game ever made up to this point.
- inactive, on 07/12/2009, -0/+5Batman for the NES was pretty good for its day.
- Stormwern, on 07/12/2009, -0/+4Same, the original Ram Raider post has no details or sources at all though..
http://ramraider.blogspot.com/2009/07/eidos-seek-9 ... - gothsquirrel, on 07/12/2009, -1/+4Batman and Robin for the Genesis (Not the one for the SNES) is good other than that they have ranged from bad to horrendous
- Buckwyld, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I concur with this poster.
- 1807, on 07/12/2009, -0/+3I think the issue of game review tampering is a lot larger than one company or one game reviewing website. I believe there is a lot of sales to be made off reviews and summaries. No one could convince me that a video game that gets horrible reviews will still be picked up by in abundance by a main stream audience. Now, some games will be picked up based on their name alone (Batman, Mario, Zelda, etc.), but for games without a household name, the only way most people will give it a chance is if someone recommends it to them and reviews are made for just that reason. Like a baseball player being accused of taking steroids, a football coach accused of taping other teams or an Olympic athlete taking performance inhancing drugs, I think the game companies should be held accountable for cheating. We shouldn't just be o.k. with it. I see so many diggers who responded "I don't care, it's BATMAN." Well you should care. Why should you care? Because 60 dollars of your hard earned money may go to a steaming pile of plastic which turned out to be nothing like the reviews described. Because if companies get away with this, what is to stop them from taking their scandalous practices further? Humans have a tendency to only fix problems when they greatly effect our way of life. It would be nice to nip this in the bud before it gets out of control.
- AndrewDB, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3It comes from a gaming site.
Hm. HOW REPUTABLE! - painting, on 07/12/2009, -1/+3great article, so insightful.
- MaxReboCLZ, on 07/12/2009, -0/+2This game looks like the perfect Gamefly rental.
- Krlll, on 07/12/2009, -4/+5WTF some blogger makes a claim, reveals no sources, says he is "sick of the games industry, and the world in general" and everybody instantly believes what he says....(from reading comments in the article).
But they are not gullible to believe in magazine reviews oh no,no way. - Krlll, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2Hmm post was a bit mixed up.
I mean to say they consider themselves savvy because of their lack of faith in magazine reviews but then they go and believe some nobody with no proof! - deweyhewson, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Eidos is the original developer that focused development entirely around consoles and then on making crappy PC ports long before it became the norm. So there's reason numero uno why I can't stand them.
But secondly, I have no doubt whatsoever that buying off reviews is a likely possibility for them. Until there is conclusive proof I won't claim they have, but based on their track record I see no reason why it wouldn't happen again. - appleseed1234, on 07/12/2009, -3/+4I'm not going near this game, it's ***** Batman.
- Bulletbillx, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1This game actually looks good, and judging from the gamestop demo will play good as well. Thankfully they delayed it to August rather than just rushing it out at least.
- xcise, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1this being on the front page of digg, they are actually going pretty good then.
- Planets, on 07/12/2009, -0/+1Refer to your first statement, Ryoma.
- SuperSneaks, on 07/12/2009, -2/+3Looking like another Kane and Lynch.
- Bulletbillx, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1Batman Vengeance was good on the ps2.
- Anji-Mito, on 07/14/2009, -0/+1The post this article refers to: http://ramraider.blogspot.com/2009/07/eidos-seek-9 ...
My understanding is that this practice is somewhat common. Embargoes are definitely a hindrance, but video game magazines play into this. They've chosen to feed a market where writing about something first as a success and this is definitely a product of that practice. So you can definitely fault Eidos but, this speaks more about the print-mag industry than anything else. - danwallace, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1Batman doesn't really have a strong history in the videogame industry.
- Sephiriz, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2Or maybe Eidos paid RAM Raider to posit these false claims so that they could rebut, and thus generate a good deal of public interest in a fake "scandal"? Honestly, I never heard of this game until I read this article, and the screen shot this article posted of the game kinda made me interested... not to imply nobody else heard of it, but seriously, this is generating some kind of interest from parties that may otherwise not be privy on this game in the first place!
- MrFisty, on 07/13/2009, -0/+1People need to remember that reviews are the opinion of the reviewer.
- taxman, on 07/13/2009, -1/+2Pretty much every exclusive reviews in IGN gets higher score than par. Conduit, Resistance, Infamous, Uncharted, GTA, MGS 4 comes to mind( but with my memory, i am probably wrong). But i think it is IGN which takes the scores to the publishers and tells them, "hey, we think that the game is great and gave it a great score. Can be print it early to make you guys look good?".
Seedy things like the publishers pressuring to give a better score happens too. - decay, on 07/12/2009, -1/+2review scores are ***** anyway. rent the game/play the demo.
- Cyborg326, on 07/12/2009, -1/+1We have not forgotten
- HappyScrappy, on 07/12/2009, -2/+2Why would Eidos even bother denying this? This is absolutely standard for games. Previews are absolutely expected by the publishers to be positive or else. Just look at the metacritic figures for any game the week before it comes out and the week after it comes out.
The average for the previews is always higher than for the reviews. - inactive, on 07/12/2009, -1/+0this is why i usually only trust user reviews for games on message boards.then again the best bet is to try it yourself.
- brainboy7777, on 07/12/2009, -3/+2NEVER FORGET THE GERSTS-MAN.
- geenope, on 07/12/2009, -3/+1and it looks good too. Eidos does not need to buy reviews. This game looks excellent anyway.
- dubey, on 07/12/2009, -3/+1Is it just me or is the monster in that picture shaking?
- chuckles08, on 07/12/2009, -5/+3Who cares? It's the goddamned Batman!
- Fuel90, on 07/12/2009, -8/+3da da da da da da da da da BATMAN!
- vichussmith, on 07/12/2009, -8/+2Obviously an exaggeration, but I have to give you props for a) a good joke and b) a nice call back to the whole Gertsmann fiasco and whatnot.
- dinglebutt, on 07/12/2009, -9/+0There were no spoken lyrics in the theme music.
