- nasalexport, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10i bet they run better
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4eBay ought to implement a fine for fraudulent listings.
- mcsweeney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wonder if PriceRitePhoto has any good deals on boxes today...
- zediker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Most of them are not fraudulent. Alot of them clearly state that they are not selling a real xbox, yet people still bid.
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm sorry, but if you're going to blow $650+ you better read the auction carefully. I don't feel too bad for these people.
- xodex, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2People don't know how to read.
- WackyT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Most of them are not fraudulent. Alot of them clearly state that they are not selling a real xbox, yet people still bid."
Then why are they selling empty boxes with descriptions of the XBox360 on the page? - Jadix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ya..i got scammed 3 times trying to get one off there. Im just going to wait for stores.
- mementh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1run scammer run.. were gonna slaughter you!!!!!
- Progression, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1tmozzelie, swindling and coning people have been around since the beginning of trade and commerce. Thanks to Internet you are just hearing about these stories more often.
- tmozzelie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Jeez, why is everyone trying to rip people off these days!
- tpimental, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regardless... I think these people should have their accounts suspended. They are obviously taking advantage of people. People would not get away with this in the offline world, why should it be ok online?
- kh4m3l30n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i guess i have two thoughts on this:
one, faux auctions are making it harder for buyers to sift thru the muck, and get to one of my actual xbox auctions. which i guess i should be upset about. even thou there are more legit auctions than faux ones, it can still give a buyer a bad taste for ebay.
and two, i have no sympathy for the winners. if youre going to pay $600 for something, you should take a moment to read the auction. its pretty much that simple.
i bought two xboxes at best buy, and i waited all night to get them. i have no interest in the system or in playing it. however, i did sell the first one for $800, which covered my costs. i cant say it didnt occur to me to just sell the box of the second unit and try this thing out. - ocelot67, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Take responsibility for your own actions.
A radical statement.
Just because you didn't read the description carefully doesn't mean the seller should be sued, fined or suspended. If it did, I'd be all over those Publishers Clearing House people for not sending me the $1,000,000 prize that I may have won.
Oh, and "their just idiots" is priceless, the__wallbanger. - vbob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hahahaha, caveat emptor. Anyone who would fall for this deserves to be parted from his money.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1at least the box won't overheat....ZING!....
- buss, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1http://xbox360box560bucks.ytmnd.com/ I don't know about you, but that makes me laugh so hard!
- Vulpes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This clearly shows how many stupid people with too much money for their own good there is in United States. Whats funny, corporations with even more money is defending them.
- tada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Someone I know tried to do this exact thing.
http://members.cox.net/boxonly/ - seriypshick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The word "Xbox" has a word "box" in it.
The bidders probably think that it's a typo.
LOL - jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0like i said in comments elsewhere, when something as hot as the xbox 360 hits everyone is going to be all over it, scammers, legitimate sellers, and just plain old theives.
your money is not safe on ebay, I would never ever ever spend more then 100$ on anything on that site, and I would only ever use paypal, because then, you may have a chance to get your money back - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I saw one of these and it clearly stated on the page THIS IS JUST THE BOX or something. People so stupid as to bid on something without being able to read very simple clear english used in the descriptions only have themselves to blame if they end up paying $800 for a cardboard box.
***** morons. - seriypshick, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For example: Xbox box
- jiub, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Also, why are people blowing hundreds of dollars more than they are actually worth to get one, what; 1, maybe 2 months earlier? Again, I don't feel too bad.
- jefferson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oh my god the idiot that payed for the auction of a box, was the winning bidder for my brothers xbox auction and wont pay, soooo funny
- The_Wallbanger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I feel bad for American bidders who don't use english as their first language. Some of the fine print disclosure statements could very easily be misunderstood. As for the english speaking bidders.. their just idiots.
- f1gm3nt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Being an owner of a video game store I can see how people do this. On my site I posted not only once, but twice that I don't have them in stock and people still ordered! Since then I have been able to get my hands on them but they are over priced and customers still pay to get them.
- Trigrhapy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Hell if people are dumb enough not to read the listing, they deserve to get a $600 box.
- geoboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't see how this is "scamming" people when the seller is being completely honest about the whole thing. I'd call it "taking advantage of really stupid people". And honestly, what's wrong with separating stupid people from their money? ;)
- Swampthing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0eBay doesn't HAVE to implement a fine for fraudulent listings because that's a matter for the criminal courts. Criminal charges of fraud can be filed against those who attempt to get someone to purchase something that really isn't what it was supposed to be. Refer the auction to the Justice Department and watch the little kid start crapping in his pants...
- chicomdk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This also happened when the frist xbox was released and the ps2 and i bet you it will happen for the ps3
- Oriole27, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1People are dumb.
- Philbert, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember this happening a lot when the PSP first came out. If I was spending a lot of money on something I would certainly read the description very carefully. I've purchased a lot of expensive electronics on eBay and on some of the the price just seemed too good to be true, so I read and reread the description. Ended up with some good deals in the end, and those actually came with the product I expected.
- telmnstr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01st, "box" is often a slang term used for computers.
2nd, there are LOTS of people that aren't net savvy, and are already scared as it is over eCommerce. This could scare off more potential eBay users.
3rd, it's lame.
But as other people put it, there is a sucker born every minute. Look at real estate, in many markets the prices have jumped 50-100% in 2 years, yet people still buy. There were bidding competitions over property... Uh yea, the seller wants to sell at a profit as it is and your going to pay $50,000 more because supposidly someone outbid you? Did you ask to see the offer, because the realtor isn't a licensed auctioneer.
God bless Amerika. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If you can't find and Xbox, just get 'em an iPod shuffle instead!
- zlibpt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And nobody tells about the emails they were selling?
There was several auctions selling emails like "officialxbox360@hotmail.co.uk". They stated that an "professional looking email for people that want to sell xbox over EBAY" would give the buyer really professional looking auctions, and there were several bidders. One that I noticed was sold for 450£!! - Madguy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I was bidding up the price on one of these as high as I could... the idiot trying to sell this either gets banned or has to pay a percentage of what the bid is.
And contract law says you can't have a contract unless something is given up by both of the parties.
And to all you "buyer beware" people, go visit PriceRitePhoto for an AWESOME deal.. or Overstock.com for that matter... - Cyberdactyl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0XBOX 360 EBAY Ad + M$ Fanboy = Explosive Fanboy Erection
- rhyno2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Fake Xbox's what?
- Noky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0A lot of people are idiots. They don't read and they have lots of money to throw away. Personally, I think these auctions are funny at times and the ones that aren't I don't disapprove of. If your too stupid to read over the description when your considering shelling out $600 then you deserve to be scammed. Hell, if eBay wasn't suspending accounts I'd do it.
Most of these aren't devious plots but lessons in common sense. True scams withload information and try to overcome reasonable doubt with incredible gains. Assuming to read and comprehend, there's no question that they aren't real. - spadin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I agree with eBay for suspending these fools. Most of you will vouch for these idiots saying that it clearly states it's just a box (or whatever)... The more important thing is perception, if you give the buyer a false perception then it is your fault.
- JBlaze, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@felch donkey. You reading comrehension seem to be as good as some of the morons buying these boxes. It clearly states that it is a DISPLAY BOX, in fact it is even underlined in red on that link. A Display box is an empty box that the stores put out on DISPLAY. it doesn't come with a 360 in it. Most stores don't like to have to open 20 360s so that they can build a display so they get empty boxes from microsoft. So in short you are as stupid as the people buying empty boxes for $500+
- Kyzer4689, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i would never pay a dime over retail for anything, just wait for the damn thing to come out in stores, why would you pay 25%-200% on something that doesnt work right and can be bought for 300-400 in a couple of weeks! i dont see why you just cant wait the thing isnt even that good
- benf2004, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0People are dumb.
If you're not smart enough to read the full auction description before you bid on it then get off the internet. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Same thing happened with PSP. I saw one PSP box that sold for over the retail price of the PSP in stores! That is beyond stupid.
- JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"That is the ***** reason no one can get an Xbox, they were all bought up by ***** like you trying to extort money from people. Buying the thing just with the intention of reselling it. ***** *****."
That's not necessary. The entire reason I couldn't get my Mustang for $16,000 is because of all of the ***** car dealerships buying them cheap and then reselling them at a higher price. Jeez.
Hell, isn't Best Buy and Circuit City, etc. getting them cheaper than you are paying for them there? Does that make them ***** because they are buying them all up and then selling them back to you at a profit?
I'm ***** pissed at the gas station across the street charging $1.91/gallon when I know his ass only paid about $1.75/gallon for it. If it weren't for ***** like him, I'd only be paying $1.75, too.
Damn economics and people trying to make money. It's not that kh4m3l30n did anything wrong... he could have sold them on ebay for the exact same price he paid for them.. and maybe you would have bought one, maybe not. But it's an auction.. if some friggin' moron is willing to pay more, then they'll get it. That's what auctions are all about... morons who are willing to pay more for something than what it's worth.. as I said before. - JackDoyle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm sorry, but the whole idea of an auction (online or offline) is "who is willing to"...
Who is willing to pay $100 for this piece of crap thing that is only worth $1? You? Okay, $110! Okay you, sir.. Okay, $150? Okay, you sir!
It's all about paying ridiculous amounts of money for something that isn't worth what is being paid for it. Sometimes it is, but most of the time it is not.
In this case, someone was just wanting to see "who is willing to" buy an Xbox box? Or even "who is willing to" buy a box that says xbox on it?
If it was stated in the auction that it was only a box, and someone is willing to bid on it, then that is exactly what auctions are for. There is so much junk on ebay.. so much crap that 99.999% of Americans would consider garbage.. but that .001% of America that is willing to pay money for it can do so.
If you're one of the .001% of America willing to pay $1,000 for an Xbox that is only worth $299, then God Bless America. If you're willing to pay $615 for a cardboard box, then God Bless America. If you're not willing in the end because you didn't read the description or even look at the picture, then God Bless you. - longman2g, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i bought two xboxes at best buy, and i waited all night to get them. i have no interest in the system or in playing it. however, i did sell the first one for $800, which covered my costs. i cant say it didnt occur to me to just sell the box of the second unit and try this thing out."

Look at the description. Doesn't it say there that the box was only opened once and nothing was removed from it? Even though elsewhere it says its just a box, isn't the description contradictory? - felchdonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"http://xbox360box560bucks.ytmnd.com/ I don't know about you, but that makes me laugh so hard!"
It's a completely fraudulent listing. Read what it says:
"This 360 box came from COMP USA and is still brand new. The box has only been opened once and nothing has been removed. You will in fact get every thing that comes in the box. This is a very good deal and wold be a same to not bid on this" -
