- d1rtfarm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15TV Shows are yours to keep. You have 2 weeks to watch the movies that you download, and after you hit play for the first time, you have 24 hours to watch it before it is deleted off the HDD.
- mark_in_bc, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20This is really what the new consoles are all about. It's not just for playing games but for selling you other services. Imagine how much money Sony can make from selling their entertainment content to the owners of the PS3 (if it catches on)? I'm sure Sony had this in mind when they decided to make it so easy to install a larger hard drive. I'm also sure a larger or special external hard drive is on the way for the 360. With the Wii it will still be about the games but with the other two it's going to move to a war of down loadable HD content.
- cliffzdude, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9@LoungeActx,
I'd guess you downloaded your movie towards the roll out, downloads are just about as fast as your pipe allows. Now IF you are downloading at a proper pace, you can start playing the movie when just a small portion has downloaded. For me it takes about 10 minutes and I can start watching...
Downloading content can vary, your pipe can be congested, Microsoft can have a capacity issue during huge peak times. I'd imagine the day or two after Christmas we'll see some slow downloads.
When you think about it, having a service that is SO successful !Microsoft! runs out of capacity at roll-out is a good problem to have... - jfowler27, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I love the concept behind this service, but I really hope they get more studios on-board. The TV selection is pretty good though, I mean they have Invader Zim, how could you go wrong with that.
- hom3land, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7TV shows are yours permanently from what i understand and the movies only last 48 hours
- gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5You can re download tv shows after you delete them as often as you need to. But I think it's getting time for a bigger hard drive for the 360. I am sure it's in the pipeline or why would they have integrated the removeability of it into its design.
- thegreenone, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I like the service alot, I wish they were able to provide more movies though. Beats the hell out of Blu-ray for HD. I never buy movies and since no one is renting movies in blu-ray this is the best option.
- Lynn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@HappyScrappy
The TV shows start playing BEFORE they are finished downloading. I just buy the TV shows I want then delete them. When I wanted to watch them again I re-download them and can start watching within a few minutes. - Charlesbian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i dont have a xbox360 so Im wodering a few things. You probably cannot burn dvds with the xbox260, so are the movies you buy from the service permanently yours as in they remain attached to your account so you can download them if u delete them later? or are all the movies essentially one time downloads or rentals? also does the xbox have options to expand the hard drive? 20gb does seem awfully small.
- pooper, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Sony's already offering HD movie downloads in Japan, and they should be offering downloads here sometime early 07.
- msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm curious how long it'll take until people are downloading these HD movies, then moving the hard drive over to a PC and uploading them to a torrent.
- jellyroll713, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This article is about MOVIE DOWNLOADS, not MUSIC. Peddle your apple fanboy ***** somewhere else.
- nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6Ya, because we all know how fast you can download 25GB, right? Only a few seconds, right?
- christoscamaro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think it will happen unless someone figures out a solid way to crack the DRM the video files are no-doubt encrypted with.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mythos:
Yes we do. With every digital cable service I've had over the last 3 years - the ondemand service allowed me to watch many movies ondemand, with a touch of a button. This includes a lot of $3.99 pay per view movies, as well as free ones that come on HBO, Starz etc. They're also streamed, not downloaded then watched which makes it much easier and practical.
These shows / movies aren't in HD, however, so that's the only edge the consoles will have, I suppose. Who's to say the cable companies won't upgrade the ondeamdn content to HD, though? - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2netflix offeres both. I just signed up this week.
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm just saying this was my experience. Yes, it was during rollout, and the quality of the movie was awesome, and it was worth the wait of downloading it (although I wish I had a larger hard drive to put it on). I also didn't know that I could watch while downloading.
- readyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Off topic, but I am really surprised TiVO never tried to do something like this; considering that some of their boxes have 80 GB HD's in them.
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually I know of at least one Netflix type service that offers both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray rentals.
Don't remember the name, but searching Google to try and find it showed that both Netflix and some Blockbuster stores are offering them as well. - msgyrd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1But but but...that means I'd have to stand up!
- readyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Mythos
Yes, we have on-demand that is just like what you stated, but at least in my area you cannot record the movies with your DVR. You only get access to them for 24 hours.
Edit: gregharmon beat me to it! - nreynolds, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ gwolf
I think removability was so that you could take it to a friend's house. Originally I had a core and my friend and I were trying to beat some game (I forgot what game) and we would just bring the HD to whoever's house we were going to. - Microdot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2beating out the competition????? itunes still holds 90% of the video download market. how is xbl beating that exactly?
or is this just for game consoles? if so.... yay for xbl! you won a competition in which there is nobody competing yet. - sideshowRAHEEM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@tubejay
Also if they gave out free blowjobs with every purchace that would be nice to, you want a better device for less money not going to happen, but you can already use an exturnal USB hard drive with the Xbox 360 with the latest firmware upgrades so the people saying they need a bigger harddrive can stop complaining. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They need Seinfeld on there.
- GliTCH82, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually, the movies don't get deleted on your hard drive after they expire. They remain on there, and if you go back to the marketplace and purchase them again it will unlock for additional viewing without having to redownload.
I found out about this after my brother hit Play on "Unforgiven" to see what the quality was like, and locked me out when I wanted to watch the movie the next day. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I agree, I am really happy that they have Jack Ass and Robot Chicken : )
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That's why you can delete the shows and watch them later after you've downloaded....
I don't even know any one that has all of their hard drive filled up. I have tons of trailers, demos, and such on mine and I still have 8 gigs left, so I don't see how you have all that space filled up unless you have probably every demo on the market place downloaded which would be pretty ridiculous.
I have really enjoyed it so far, I've downloaded several shows of Jack Ass and South Park so far and it's all been good fun. - walter909, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Its fast I have regular cable and the SD content buffers in 2 min ....Its more convenient then bit torrent for me because I don't have to spend time finding, downloading and converting that takes to long ...its a matter of would you rather spend time and effort to get this content X way or would you like to pay a couple of bucks and get it fast on live ..for me my time is worth more then i would spend downloading and converting this stuff X way. so thats why iv been buying .. a 21 year old male consumer/time killer side point of view ...
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's been a month since the release/opening of the Xbox Live Video Marketplace, and, so far, Microsoft has released two or three new movies. Also, they're pretty slow when it comes to getting new TV shows out. I can download them off bittorrent in an hour an hour after they air. However, on the XBL Video Marketplace, it takes two weeks just for them to be released and two weeks for them to download, because the XBLVM is so slow.
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Lounge:
Cheaper? Faster, sure, I'll buy that. Overnight IS a long time to wait. But some of us spend $5 just to get to the movie store (Gas, cab, whatever. We don't all live right in town), that's without renting anything. Also, isn't blockbusters prices pretty scary, or am I off the mark (i don't rent movies there, but I do rent games, so it's not like I've never been there).
What *I* think would help Microsoft the most would be like a $20 a month all you can eat option, but that's just me. - sinderphytik, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0@TheBeast205
I don't know what you're talking about. I consider myself a relatively conservative downloader on Live, and my HDD is full. With demos pushing 1GB each nowadays, I can barely have 10 and keep room for any movies or other content. I'm definitely looking forward to a bigger HDD when they release it. - andreo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ Bootes
GamezNflicks offers HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. I was going to sign up with them this week. But the page to put in your credit card info it's secured. I sent an email to them about it and I've heard nothing back 4 days later. - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2This is really surprising when you think of the little fact that the 360 only has a 20GB hard drive. I hardly have any room left on mine after all the demos I've downloaded, so I haven't even thought about buying a show. I'll wait for the (inevitable) 100+ GB hard drive to come out next year
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Awesome. So If I have nothing else to download, and I don't care much about fast forwarding, I can watch it again as I redownload it!
How about they just give me a way to back it up instead? Save us both some bandwidth.
If I just wanted to redownload it every time, I could watch shows off of abc.com or nbc.com for free. - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2Redownloading takes too long with media this size. Just give me a way to back it up locally, even if I have to move it back to the Xbox 360 to play it (or just stream it through the 360).
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -12/+9So much for BlurRay, that's for sure.
Hard Media is sooooo old. - DFENS, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4To quote the article - "Though exact sales figures aren't available from any Web site or studio, insiders agree that it's the most, and maybe only, positive story in digital movie downloads this year."
Obviously poorly researched. While the story may be positive for XBox adopters (i'm one of them), the big enws this month was iTunes and it's digital downloads being one of the top ten storefronts for music - counting the brick and mortar stores. It beat out Tower and Borders and Sam Goody. That's incredibly good news for the digital realm. I'm not typing this to knock the 360's service - I'm happy with it on my 360. But Apple has over a 70% share in the digital realm - this article simply means Microsoft is beating everyone but apple and the brick and mortars.
Apple, however, is beating brick and mortars too.
http://news.com.com/iTunes+outsells+traditional+music+stores/2100-1027_3-5965314.html - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5It appears the article fails to compare against iTunes, saying it only offers purchase, not rental.
It's unclear Live is really outperforming the competition when you include the actual competition. - DFENS, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1That's not my point - I'm not saying it's slaughtering in numbers - I'm saying the big news is that for the first time in the history of digital downloads, a digital download store beat of brick and mortar. Reread my post. I'm not an apple fan-boy - just stating how amazing that is for technophiles everywhere.
When digital downloads first started, people thought they were cute, that they would never be able to compete with a real store. Apple proved them wrong - and that's an amazing feat. considerably more amazing then the fact that the Xbox Live service isn't a failure. THAT is all the article is about - how amazing it is that this succeeds. I've been coming to digg for a long time, only recently beginning my posting and commenting. There is no way this is Digg-worthy news. It's an article about how people are buying something. No numbers, no upsets, nothing. Just the fact that people are buying it. It's barely more then an advertisement.
And so I point out that this year had bigger digital download news. And you, the rabid angry troll, tells me I'm a fan-boy. :) - adml_shake, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4I'll just stick to downloading TV shows on my PC.
- LoungeActx, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4I don't know, I downloaded 'V for Vendetta' and it took me all night to download it. I could have driven to another state and back and picked up the movie, and it would have been cheaper and faster than downloading it on the 360.
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4They're yours until you need space on your tiny 20GB HDD.
Honestly, with the crappy 20GB HDD, everything's a rental. - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2This begs the question, when are we going to get an updated XBox 360. It's clearly time for Microsoft to give it a small update to help those of us who have nice high def TVs. The 360 desperately needs an HDMI output, and it desperately needs bigger hard drives.
Finding 360 component cables at the lengths a lot of us need them (I need a 25 ft cable to put a 360 in my living room on my big screen lcd) is almost impossible. That's the only reason I haven't bought a 360. I have no way of getting a cable long enough to get to my TV mounted on the wall. Plus HDMI looks better. Sure it's got tons of DRM, but honestly I'm not stealing anything, so I don't really care. I just want the best possible picture to my tv.
If they came out with a 360 with HDMI out, a 100g hard drive, and lowered the price of the 360 by $50, you could kiss Sony goodbye. They would absolutely knock sony out of the game. - totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -20/+5They cite no figures, no sales numbers to compare Amazon/Xbox/Apple/etc. The Variety story quoted mentions "Though exact sales figures aren't available from any Web site or studio, insiders agree that it's the most, and maybe only, positive story in digital movie downloads this year."
Well, as long as they all agree. Those insiders, I mean.
