- sohocode, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Its great to finally see all the mouse performance discussions made on ESR forums in the past years, summed up in this great article. Sujoy just took it to the next level this time. GJ
- sarcoma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12The one article any serious FPS gamer should read
- Spetz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Absolutely fantastic.
- Ezku, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I've been waiting for something like this to come out for a long while. Huge thanks to Sujoy and let's hope he can keep on updating the list as new mice come up.
Diamondback and MX518 were expectedly on top, but MX500's overclocked performance got me by surprise. That's a really good piece of hardware right there.
It's interesting to see that when we finally have a solid argument for laser mice totally sucking in the speed department, Razer is putting out a new mouse based on LED again - the DeathAdder. It's looking excellent so far, I do hope it'll be worth the wait. - plm0000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1not bad.
- plm0000, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1really not bad

we need your support to grow - shawnj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2ESR + Sujoy = good times
- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Perfect control is not based on m_accel, it is based on the linearity of the response
- shawnj, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2It's too bad that perfect control is based off of the use of m_accel, which I personally can't stand using.
- elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6No G7? What the hell?
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's a wireless G5, so I'd just take the G5's scores.
- Hale, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12no MX1000? It's not as though the MX1000 is terribly new, and the non-BT version has zero lag, why wouldn't it be in this competition?
- Krovvy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6You should suggest it to them, they will probably update these benchmarks with other mice.
- Krovvy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Definitely a good read for gamers, and this explains some things I've been noticing. I've always thought my Copperhead had poor performance compared to my older Diamondback, and even to my old Intellimouse; this proves it!
Dugg - SwiftP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I guess it's time for a blast from the past this Xmas. MX518 ftw!
- mustbepatient, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This was an excellent, professional article. Kudos to the writer!
- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Hopefully Logitech, Razer and Microsoft will start producing decent mice now. The laser lie has gone on for too long! And all those supposedly credible sites like Firing Squad and Toms hardware all bought into it and praised laser technology. This site just shows how optical technology beats laser mice anytime!
It is pathetic that nobody ever did a decent mouse benchmark before Sujoy did. What he did is great, but it ain't exactly rocket science :)- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1mistake
- FunkstarDeLux, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This maybe stupid, but I did Google it...
Just how do I over clock a MX500?- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Esreality has a thread for your mouse problems too!
http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=222946&flat=yes%22%3Ethis - RandomSkratch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I still don't see the overclocking information on that page.
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Actually it is on that page, Heres the link: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/System-Tweak/USB-Mouserate-switcher.shtml
It patches the mouse driver and asks you to restart, can be undone by running it again.
- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Esreality has a thread for your mouse problems too!
- gotamd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That's probably the best mouse review I've ever seen as far as objective judgment of performance goes. It's very interesting to say the least. These new laser mice definitely do not live up to the hype.
- SquisherX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The problem with this test, is that it is strictly testing horrozontal velocity movement. It is akin to testing the 0-60 of a car to determine which is the best, without any regard for its handling.
For the sake of argument, I want to assume my mouse is withing the threshold for perfect movement. What is the response lag and quality of tracking on different surfaces. For example, put those opticals on a glass table and tell me how the performance is now...- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Valid point, but at least he measured the response =) Which is more than the tens thousand other mouse reviews out there.
- Valarauka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Response lag shouldn't be much of an issue, considering that all the mice tested were wired. Of course, testing is still a good idea. Naturally, there *is* lots of room for more comprehensive tests, but this one article alone clears up so many questions that you can't really fault him for not doing more.
Excellent scientific approach too, basing everything on measured, repeatable tests and not giving any weight to "feel" or marketing materials. Much better than some articles I've seen from some more 'prestigious' review sites.
All in all an amazing article.
- code_of_life, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1OMG my MX500 rules them all.
0.01+$7 shipped from ebay! - schlongmeister, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Not an Apple mouse in the comparison? I'm kind of curious how they'd compare to the others.
- BarleyWind, on 11/11/2007, -2/+13Because serious gamers use one button mice.
- ChaperonNoir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Reading it. It looks like an amazing piece of work!
- coyo7e, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Wow, what a great article. I'd been wondering why my oh-so-snazzy IE4.0 laser mouse seems to send me into more random uncontrolled movements (both in and out of game,) than my old "crappy" intellimouse.. I had assumed it was the wireless connection though, not the clock speed on it!
...It's too bad that all the "Razer" branded mice are soo hard to hold onto for my large hands, 'cause I'd go buy a Diamondback tonight otherwise! - BT-Wang, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I don't know about anyone else, but I have a G5 and a big mouse pad, I can't for the life of me move it fast enough to malfunction.
maybe I'm just not that sort of gamer.
the G5s sensitivity is second to nothing else I've used, and the fatal1ty 2020 is a terrible mouse (just go to the nearest best buy and hold one.)
cool article, but it emphasizes top speed more than precision, which is understandable given the test they used.
precision as important as speed, depending on how you like your sensitivity.- shawnj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You're quite lucky then. My G5 constantly malfunctioned on me in FPS games - I had to go back to my mx500 because it was so frustrating.
- maarten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They focused just as much on precision as on speed.
- CptVague, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I second the desire for an MX100 to be tested. Maybe they'll do a cordless mouse roundup test. Lag testing would be crucial for such an article, imo. I've recently gone to a G5 from my MX100 and have been pleased so far, other than losing my "page forward" button.
- uncola, on 11/19/2007, -0/+0wish sujoy would add lachesis, g9, sidewinder, ikari to this
