- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -12/+63Another nail in the coffin.
- OGla, on 10/12/2007, -4/+42Nintendo DS Lite is the first handheld game I have bought and its great! I was thinking of buying a PSP but when I tried the games available I felt it was just the same Playstation games I have been playing the last 10 years in a hand held format. The DS is something new. Fun games should be obvious but I think a lot of game companies got lost on the way and tries to compete with flashy graphics. Not thinking of the fun factor.
- Tiabin, on 10/12/2007, -6/+35There's something nostalgic about all of this. Reminds me of when I had a Sega saturn.
- tomsentest, on 10/12/2007, -6/+33that only makes sense, ds owns psp at the moment
- cambrown99, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28That is the first time I've ever heard anyone categorize New Super Mario Bros. as bad. Actually, it's the first time I've ever heard anyone suggest it was anything less than brilliant.
- rolosworld, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22quote from EA:
"...we were excited by the technology, but the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun. "
This explains why most of their games sucks...
Lets hope they will listen more to the consumers, the ones who actually play the games. - mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22... in terms of games that actually make use of the full potential of the hardware they are on.
PSP is a really nice piece of hardware with a couple good games. They play great, look great but it only lasts so long. The DS has software with more replayability. I may be a geek but I love Brain Age and I can play that for ages. Nothing wrong with trying to improve my brain and play at the same time. Beats running around with guns in GTA:LCS (been there, got the t-shirt). Helps Jack Thompson make a better argument against us "violent kids". - mc900ftjesus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+23Great, now there can be 110 sports titles sold at maximum price every year plus a few hundred Lord of the Rings rehashes, I'm so excited I crapped my pants.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+19Consumers actually want fun?
Inconcievable! - jpcoombs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Actually, its with your two cents plus $249.98.
- eilorux, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17I have a PSP and the only thing that's worth playing is Lumines. It's a good thing that homebrew is alive and well... now if only SONY would embrace it.
- soccerpmn, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18@ aplardi:
The Opera browser is only available in Japan, ATM, and you don't need any hacks to browse the web on a PSP, you don't even have to pay for a UMD to go online. - billypw, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16When reading between the lines, his statement:
There’s no doubt that EA has historically bet more on PSP," Gardner explained. "I think we were excited by the technology, but the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun. We must never forget that what we need to focus on is fun and so EA is putting more effort behind DS games—and creative ones that really take advantage of the hardware."
What he actually said:
---
There’s no doubt that EA has historically bet more on PSP (or Sony's video game platforms) because that's where the money is. I think we were excited by the awesome technology because we're graphics/power whores, but the consumers have proven that the less powerful Nintendo DS is more fun. We must never forget that what we need to focus on making money and so EA is putting more effort behind DS games because that's where the money went —and *try* to create creative ones that really take advantage of the hardware.
---
Coincidentally, you can replace 'PSP' with 'PS3' and 'DS' with 'Wii' in the above. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -9/+22Amazing how EA contributed to the failure of the Sega Dreamcast by repeatedly trashing it for being an underdog and refusing to put a single game on it, and now they're rooting for another underdog (Nintendo). I suppose it's a good change in tactics, but they're still *****.
- über, on 10/12/2007, -18/+31Sony, your days are numbered.
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18MKDS, Super Mario Brothers, Tetris, AC:WW!
Just to name a few.... Those titles hardly incorporate what makes the DS so different.
Craziness! - Alegis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Doesn't have too many great games? I thought PSP had 3 games with sales over a million, and DS around 18.
- Frank_the_Tank, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Exactly. Let's not forget the last Madden for PSP and it's bugs. EA hasn't exactly done anything to further the PSP's progress or reputation.
- feelingkettle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13What about the Castlevania DS games? Dawn of Sorrow is an incredible game, and Portrait of Ruin looks like it's going to be even better. And how about a Starfox game coming out for the DS, and the 3d remake of Final Fantasy III?
Before I got the DS lite, I hadn't bought a video game system since Nintendo 64. The DS has a great balance between old school games (that I love) and new games, and WiFi action is enough to keep me playing a game like MarioKart DS for a long long time. And with games like Brain Age and Tetris DS, it seems like there are games out there for everyone.
Anyway, I love the DS...Nintendo got it right this time, and it was enough for me, a Nintendo fan since the NES days, to finally pick up video games again. - the_atomic_ned, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13@Frank_the_Tank
"I hate this fanboy *****." and "I hate you people"
Yeah, That's enough to rate you down right there. I really don't need to read the rest of your comment. - Supernova36, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13"but the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun."
Well done EA. Too Good! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It's simple: the DS is a 100% game device whereas the PSP isn't. When the numbers of units are close, and one platform has gained significant momentum for being designed for "innovative games", where would YOU spend your money developing new titles?
- Bootes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11PSP is great EA just makes crappy games. NFS Most Wanted for PSP is probably one of the worst racers I've tried.
- IdanE, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11Man, that's just plain wrong!
You want games? how about new mario bros. ? or mario64 ? and if you want RPGs, you got a FF game coming, a great mario RPG out there, lunar, etc. add to that great quick games like wario ware and rub rabbits, mix in a couple of games like trauma center and phoenix wright and you got the most diverse lineup after the PS2, and all this on a relatively cheap handheld that came out just 2 years ago.
As for the PSP (which I own, btw), it pretty much has only ports or rehashes that are any good - megaman games for example. Daxter was good, and lumines was amazing. But other than that, I want originality. I want games that actually feel fresh - and that's what the DS does.
But hell, you'll probably brand me a nintendo fanboy (Even though I own all current gen consoles and portables) - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9The hardware is great but most of the games flat out suck. My PSP is almost exclusively a video/audio player now. Haven't played a game on it in about 6 months.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"but you didn't exactly help it from doing so with your subpar, watered down, control-clunky craptastic ports"
now you know how gamecube owners feel. - deadbaby, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10The only PSP RPG worth playing is Generations of Chaos and that's a port. Exciting.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8it's called The Princess Bride, and don't let the name fool you. check it out sometime!
- psychicfriend, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8IRONIC: isn't it game publishers like EA that are supposed to MAKE the games that make the console FUN?
So this guy is basically saying, "instead of making games for the PSP, we're going to make games that are fun."
I didn't even know that faster hardware / bigger screen prevented fun. Consider me pwned.
At least now I know why I prefer the DS - up to now I always though it was because Nintendo actually cared about the games that go on their platform. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+11It's not the PSP's fault that your games sucked, EA. 989 Sports' baseball games were actually BETTER than yours. Do you hear me? That's like a statement from BIZARRO WORLD.
The PSP is sinking, but you didn't exactly help it from doing so with your subpar, watered down, control-clunky craptastic ports.
In a few years you'll probably jump ship to another platform because, "People want fun." - samdu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I'm amazed it took this many comments to get to this point (maybe I shouldn't be what with the blind Sony hate that proliferates Digg). A piece of hardware isn't "fun." A platform isn't "fun." It's the software that's either fun or not. A stylus and a second screen are just a stylus and a second screen. It isn't until you put some great software on that screen and utilize that stylus through software in an interesting way that you get anywhere near "fun." The GameBoy is the best selling console of all time and it didn't have a second screen or a stylus. Is anyone saying that the GameBoy wasn't "fun?" No, of course not, because it had great software. There's no reason for EA to scale back on the PSP except for one thing. Sales. Currently, the DS is outselling the PSP. Go where the money is. But for EA, a publisher, to claim that a piece of hardware is more "fun" than another simply exposes how limited they are as a publisher. I bought NCAA 2007 for the PS2. Guess what? It's "fun." But I'm also a college football junkie. At any rate, it's the publishers' and developers' jobs to make hardware "fun." I can almost guarentee that the EA software for the DS will be no more "fun" than the EA software for the PSP. EA is simply not a publisher that pushes limits anymore. They're too big to take those kinds of risks.
DIsclaimer - I own a DS Lite. I don't own a PSP - yet. - NTolerance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@PunkFenixJT
Thinking of the announcer from NBA Jam saying "That's the nail in the coffin!" always does it for me. - atmofunk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8" ... but the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun... "
damn! ...glad they were waiting for the statistics before figuring that one out 0_o - gage006, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11@Arch77:
Keep that PSP for a couple of months and see how long you're still interested in it. It looks great at first but the lack of games worth owning on it kills it quick. I'll stick with my DS. - iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9@Frank
but the DS does have good rpgs. In exactly thirty-two days, the DS gets a full final fantasy game. And it already has Mario and Luigi and Castlevania (i'd say it counts as an RPG). It may be less than the PSP but they're damned good games.
Quality > Quantity
(p.s. Don't forget all the great GBA rpgs!) - 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Inconceivable.

What do YOU think it means? - Ubish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Maybe if EA would have released a football game for the PSP that didnt' have some sort of fatal flaw in it, people would have purchased more. Although they fixed the issue with Madden (in a re-release) they are still working on the NCAA rushing bug. Maybe it is too difficult to program for the psp? Whatever it is, if they churn out the same crap on the DS they will have just as many problems.
- QuarterRoy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I don't know if this is good news. Most of EA's games for the DS have been crap. Every game EA has released for the DS has been a half-ass port of a something that you could play a lot better on the consoles or the PC. So far EA hasn't used the DS to its full potential. Hopefully this announcement means that EA will start to create some high quality original games but judging by what I've seen so far from EA on any handheld I'm not impressed.
- fuchila, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6My EA boycott is still going strong, hows yours?
- 5thfreedom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Well, if that is the case, then I apologize. Although I am over the age of 15, and did not catch the reference.
- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4of course, now that Lumines is coming to the 360 and it's already on mobile phones, it shows that the game series won't just stay on the PSP. I wouldn't be surprised if we see a DS version of the game some time
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"The whole Mario thing is just old -- I've seen it before and Metroid's graphics looked terribly dated."
Well at least the gameplay ideas aren't terribly outdated like on the PSP. - xpaladin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Against my better judgement, I bought a PSP for my birthday. After going through GTA:LCS, I haven't used the thing in months.
I regret it well after the fact -- I can't see a need to buy any games for it. None of them look at all interesting to me. The DS, on the other hand, has a few interesting titles that would probably keep me entertained for at least a year. I own an old school 1989 Game Boy as well, and I got at least 5 years of life out of that thing.
This PSP is just a $250 brick. I think the best I could do is to try buying an undiluted platnum chip, modding it myself, and then ebaying the working kit to break even and get a DS. - Metman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Personally think they should work on their customer service and tech support first.
- mike_p, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@Daniel591992: I think Jack Thompson was looking for a statement from you. Don't tell him we enjoy killing virtual people all the time.
- lane.montgomery, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8This is foreshadowing of events to come.
- iluvatar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I am quoting a movie, and I suspect omgwut had the same movie in mind when he made his post.
It's an incredible movie, and everyone over the age of 15 should know what I'm talking about. - macgabriel87, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7@ maxtypezero : are you sure it was a lot of people? are you it wasn't just TWO people?! to be completely honest here, playing NSMB is just as good as porn. I can spend hours beating the game, and then afterwards i would pick it back up and collect all the coins. it's so rewarding to nail koopas right in the ass or take their shells and toss them to goombas.
- TwoD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3They couldn't think of a way to make something else than ports because it's just a portable playstation.
With the DS it can innovate with the touch screen. Get new tools, make something you couldn't before. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Hey IdanE, I find it funny that all the games you listed for the DS are exactly what you said the PSP faults at, rehashes, remakes, and ports. Mario64? port. Starfox? rehash Mario? remake. Ect. Ect. Ect."
He said the DS makes them feel fresh again, thats why he was talking about all of the games like that. -
