- Yukos, on 10/12/2007, -11/+46Star Wars Fan, when everyone in the consumer electronics industry refers to it as a console war, then I think it is okay to use the terminology. You don't have to be self-righteous and pompous just because your PS3 isn't selling well.
- sockpuppets, on 10/12/2007, -7/+33Lol, you call him self-aggrandizing?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+34The key to XBox 360 being the victor of this round (i concur w/ the article) is more than games.
Its the network. Its the 'extensions', its downloadable movies and tv and music. Its Windows Media Center Extender (xbox360). The games are good on both ps3 & 360.
Only the XBox 360 has will deliver the Whole Entertainment Experience that was all the chat during the last go-round...
It is MHO that the Wii has sold to its base, it wont have legs.
PS3 wont be able to touch MS's backend prowess and XBox Live becomes the killer app.

- arunforce, on 10/12/2007, -12/+31Don't even think about looking on Digg for news on the console war, it's biased as hell.
- Yukos, on 10/12/2007, -11/+30how does he come out and say that Sony is failing while Nitnendo is skyrocketing, and then come out and say that Sony will still beat Nintendo for install base? I remember this same arguement for the PSP and Nintendo DS: "Sure, the DS is winning now, but the PSP is going to catch it". As weeks went by, guess what? The Nintendo DS continued to outsell the PSP by a huge margin, where the hell is the PSP now? When is it going to start, you know, selling?
- chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -12/+29It is selling, just not as well as the phenomenal DS so you don't hear about it. In two years PSP has already sold more than both the Gamecube and original Xbox did in their entire runs, and yet people think it is still a "failure".
I'm happy with my DS, but I have friends who love their PSPs and showed me a few games coming out that make me wish I also owned a PSP. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -9/+25arunforce: "Don't even think about looking on Digg for news on the console war, it's biased as hell."
Apparently reality must be biased as hell, too. It's true a lot of people on Digg are fans of the Xbox or Wii, but that pretty much reflects the population at large. Ask the staff at any electronics retailer which consoles are receiving more attention. Look at sales totals for the systems. Look at search engine queries. The PS3 is losing all the way around. I'm not saying it can't make a comeback, and I don't think it'll be a failure (30-50 million by my guess), but so far it's a disappointment.
capitapf: "The wii just isnt powerful enough to play next gen games."
Given your narrow definition of next gen games you might be right, but I think you overestimate how much the average person cares. Average people don't give two flips about terms like next gen, 1080p, or Bluray. - Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13We give such credit and authority to game developers because they... you know... develop games.
When the person who is making games for the system you're considering buying says, "***** that, don't pay for it," you know that he, or his studio might possibly be considering switching off of the console.
Let's say your favorite director is Steven Spielberg, and he was making 10 movies a year. If your biggest reason to buy an HD-DVD player, is because you expect a lot of Spielberg flicks, and he says, "***** hd-dvd, i'm going blu-ray," would you still end up buying hd-dvd?
Again, it's not a cut and dry decision, but when the world's largest publisher, given the #1 spot as a Publisher/Developer in Game Developer for the past 3 years (or more, I've only been a Game Developer subscriber for 3 years) then you know you've got a venerable force there.
Edit: Also, it's not the entire company, I know, but when anyone with some sort of power in the company says it, there is something you should take away from that.
Edit 2: The reason he's not an economist is because he doesn't have to predict. His company moves the economy of the industry. - chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14"I disagree. Although the wii has done well so far, it will not be able to compete with the 360 in the long run. i give it a year before people realize that the wiimote has very limited uses. The wii just isnt powerful enough to play next gen games."
In a year, the majority of respected Japanese developers will probably be on the Wii. - UglieJosh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11No, developers want to make better selling games.
If more people were still playing their Atari 2600's than were playing the PS3 or 360, you would see Madden '08 (The Atari Edition) - UltraMegaFilms, on 10/12/2007, -8/+16@ PROLIFElovegod: It's not surprising that you back the PlayStation 3. You don't believe in evolution, and you think the world is 6,000 years old. JESUS H. CHRIST!!!
- mracid70, on 10/12/2007, -5/+12Wow, how confused some people are. Its all really simply actually: the ps3 will not get developer support unless it is established. It cannot be established because of its insane price tag. It cannot lower the price tag, at least for now, because the parts are still to expensive. By the time PS3 drops the price, the 360 will do the same, and the situation will not change. If you look at the history of extremly expensive video game consoles, you kinda see a patten: THEY ALL FAIL! The PS3 aint a bad machine, just released way too early, kinda like the dreamcast. Well, we all know how that turned out.....
- rick2k, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10And why should we listen to anything one EA developer says?
- dagamer34, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Let's do some number crunching:
Xbox 360: 10.5 million
Wii: 4.5 million
Playstation 3: 1.5 million
4.5 / 16.5 = 27%
Now, that already is quite good. Some more interpretation:
LTD (Life to date), Wii has already sold ~50% what Microsoft has sold, but in only 3 months.
LTD, Wii has outsold the PS3 3:1.
Still, the real shocking numbers will come when Nintendo finally meets demand, but that could be a while. - mvent2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I for one, don't want the 360 to be top dog. While the 360 is an excellent game machine, I fear that if it does win it will be like what Microsoft has done when they're the top with their other markets: stagnation. Windows is still far behind OSX and Linux. IE received no updates for years. If Microsoft now takes over the console arena, we might only see minor updates (if any) to the graphics each generation with a video game crash soon following.
Digg me down if you wish, I just had to get that off my chest. - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9bahahahahahhahaaahaahaaaahaam, chriskzoo you are friggin hilarious

Based on your own market research?... - mywhitenoise, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5haha, seriously, those guys make the absolute worst video games.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Eh, mainstream consumers don't care too much about those stuff. Not yet anyway.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7As smart as I'm sure you think you are, you must realize it's possible for people to have honest opinions contrary to your own without having been paid to think that way, right?
- davidwho, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6hey... i loved mario on my gb :(
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The 360 is doing decently, not phenomenal, not poor, just decent. Microsoft is only shipping 12 million consoles through June,a downgrade from 13-15 million, and witha a year's head start. Nintendo is ramping up Wii production to 9million units ship in the same time frame and its easy to see how the Wii is catching up rather easilly.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6It's true that price is the main reason I won't buy a PS3. There are other things in life I choose to spend money on, but that's no reason to dislike something. The reason I dislike the PS3 and Sony in general is because of the amazing amount of hubris and downright contempt they've shown for their customers over the past year, and other related incidents such as the rootkit fiasco, perpetuating an HD format war, and their exploding batteries. While many companies offer horrible customer service I've never seen an entire corporation be so anti-consumer.
Just my $0.02. - xtmno3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Why do people listen to EA anyway? Last I heard (unfortunately played) they took good game franchises and ruined the hell out of them. I almost want to fore go playing C&C3 because they are doing it.
- noseeme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Ugh. I don't have enough money for either of those consoles...
- BadassCheese, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12I have a Wii and a 360, I prefer the 360. Just my opinion though.
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Price IS the main reason. It's not the consumer's fault for speaking with their wallet.
- catalysis, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Thats true. Kids and college students don't have HDTVs yet. They still use 27'' CRTs for gaming and have no need for blu-ray, HDMI 1.3, Dolby trueHD 7.1, etc., etc. What good is a PS3 if you have nothing to hook it up to?
- chicbicyclist, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Madden is the best selling game last year, and it was made by EA. It sold 6.5 million units. The 2nd best selling game only sold 2.7M.
- StateofMind09, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Thanks for the tip EA. Maybe I can help you out: stop copying the same games over and over every year, get decent servers, and shove micro transactions up your ass.
- durrty, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This subject seems to getting overplayed by now, but I wanted to through my last 2 cents in. And that is, if this is a all out console-war then that would mean that they are battling because you are only going to purchase one console. The Wii, I would say, in this respect takes itself out of "war" in that just because you own a 360, PS2 or PS3 doesn't mean you wont go by a Wii.
Wii's low price point has made it extremely popular with those who already own a next-gen console, and so if you are going to factor the numbers wouldn't you need to subtract the people who own a 360 and a Wii? or a PS3 and a Wii? Because Nintendo didn't "win" their household regardless of sales numbers.
Any war, it would appear would be between the 360 and PS3 because the price points on each unit makes it much less likely for the average consumer to buy both. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I didn't say anything in my post about people hating the PS3. In fact I really didn't specify a reason at all. The negativity surrounding Sony is certainly a contributing factor, but as you pointed out the biggest factor is price. The PS3 is likely to always be significantly more expensive than the competition this time around, so that factor will continue to be a problem for Sony.
The point is that Sony is in trouble, regardless of reason. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3as long as there is:
1) parents who want to get their lazy kids off the couch
2) moms and dads who want to get more involved with their kids games
3) moms and dads who don't want their kids playing all those 'shoot em ups'
4) the plethora of star wars fans who can't wait to wield a lightsaber
5) lots of broke gamers who can barely afford ramen
6) nintendo exclusives (zelda, mario etc)
the Wii will sell.
It wont necessarily win this "console war" but it will perform very well - L4stM4nSt4nding, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's not like they sell more games than pretty much every other developer or anything...
Seriously, I hate EA as much as the next guy, but come on. - mracid70, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Thats why the 360 didnt really hit it off until the PS3's price tag was announced. When people found out about the 600 bux theyd have to drop on that thing... Anyway, my point is that the PS3's lack of market and inability to gain any (due to price) is what propells the 360 market. Had the PS3 shipped w/o a Blue Ray Drive, and instead been priced at the same level as 360, we'd have a real slug fest. Unfortunatly for Sony, they had to throw in another failure of a disc format.
- JackSeoul, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I'm guessing Andrew Garrett will get a talking to from management about saying things he shouldn't in a public forum. Sony will put a call in to EA asking for a 'please explain' because one developer's opinions posted on a forum has been made to look like it's the official opinion of the whole of EA.
Back in 1999 I did the same thing while I was working for Epic - someone posted a message on UT forums asking whether to buy a 3dfx or Nvidia card. I replied strongly recommending a 3dfx card, which then got reported as Epic's recommendation on the news sites. I got a nice phone call from Nvidia :-) Oops. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4As near as I can tell you're arguing that if so many people didn't dislike the PS3 it would be more successful. No ***** Sherlock. The truth is there's a lot of animosity towards Sony and the PS3 right now. It's not because of any super-secret smear campaign against Sony of a drug induced mass hysteria. People have any number of valid reasons for their opinion.
It's not just Digg either, as much as you might like to believe it's all some kind of conspiracy. You can complain all you want, but Sony is the only one who can fix the problem at this point. Sadly, rather than admit their mistakes, they never miss an opportunity to rub salt in the wounds. - brombie, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Skip the PS3 is a good advice for the moment. I'm not a fanboy of anything, I just want good content. With my Wii, 360, and PS2, I have almost 99% of the good/great console games you can buy today covered, including classic Gamecube, Xbox games, and Virtual Console titles.
The 1% is Resistance. It makes it incredibly easy to skip that 1% when the price tag comes at $700 with tax and a game. - chocobomog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4"because by this time the DS would have sold more than the Gamecube, Xbox, and PSP did combined"
Where do you get these "facts"? The DS isn't even near half of that. It is selling well, but don't blow it out of proportion.
"You make your game for the system which most people are likely to buy it on"
Exactly, the DS and PSP are two very different systems graphically and control-wise, and games that work on one will not on the other (in a design or playing sense). There are very little (if any) games that look and play the same on both systems. They are almost two different markets. Vice City stories wouldn't work on the DS, and Nintendog wouldn't work on the PSP. Developers can make games that the PSP excels at and know people will buy them, same with the DS. Thus both systems have a rather large base of people who will buy games for them because those games won't be found anywhere else. It's not like the PS3 and 360 where two games could be very alike with a few minor graphical difference. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I wholeheartedly hope that they stick to their promise to boy-cot the PS3.
Who needs this EA crap anyways? - bobjsmith, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yeah, EA's opinion is really important because they've been doing so many innovative games lately...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Dugg down as a Dupe
This same story has been posted on digg about 4 times now
and its just lame, EA sucks ***** donkey ***** to begin with
their games suck ass and all they do is leech the industry by buying out smaller companies that are actually skilled at developing underrated titles - theblackgecko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I would take EA's opinion on the North American market and the lead North American publisher.
However, even if the 360 is the console to beat in North America, that doesn't change the fact that it is a miserable failure in Japan. Japanese developers like Square-Enix will make quality games for the PS3. North American developers will make quality games for the 360. When it is profitable, there will be portings and localizations. - PadreHomer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I have a Wii and a 360 also and the Wii gets played more often, well actually I never play the 360. Its not because there aren't a couple of games for the 360 I am interested in, its just that I have no time. I am a father of 2 children under the age of 2 with a full time job and I have a hard time fitting games into my schedule anymore. My wife loves playing Wii sports, especially Wii bowling and frankly its an easy game to just pick up and play when you have a free 15 minutes or half an hour here and there. There are a few games on Wii actually that have this kind of appeal, where the non-hardcore gamer doesn't feel intimidated and you don't have to devote several hour blocks for days at a time to play them.
This is where I think some people are missing the mark. For years and years the games industry, or perhaps more specifically the console industry, has been focused on a certain group. Those who don't have a lot of responsibilities and who have a lot of free time to devote to games have pretty much been the de facto market for video games, what has been ignored is everyone else. While I think there should always be games for hardcore gamers, previously being one myself and having an Xbox 360 because I do plan on playing one sometime, I think Nintendo's strategy to design, build and market a machine that all people of all ages and all life situations could see themselves buying and playing and having fun with is a pretty smart move and will probably make them a lot of money. I think Sony and even Microsoft's insistence on seeing their market as only one kind of gamer and thinking that the general consumer needs to change themselves to get with their version of video games instead of the other way around is extremely limiting. I applaud Nintendo for actually making games a part of my life again. - therightclique, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2its also important to remember that at the time 3DFX kicked a lot of ass and then magically disappeared.
- taxman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Sony doesn't necessary lose this round but in the interest of the gaming people, sony monopoly over gaming needs to end so that in the next round they wont even think about pushing a video format into our faces and Japanese developers get off their sony bandwagon and make games multi-platform.
Wii also needs to get atleast 30% of the market share so that the other console makers would think about introducing something new.
The 360 also needs get atleast 30%-40$ of the market share so that everything that it got right with xbox live is implemented with every console.
An ideal gaming system would have the 360s processor and live, Wii remote and sonys Japanese game developers support... Only if all 3 of these systems win this round, will see us getting our ideal console next time around.... Besides competetion is good. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4brindon...you REALLY make yourself look like an idiot with your comments.
It is hte mark ofa VERY weak mind to just say "You must be PAID by the company" whenever someone doesn't agree with you. Hence, it is clear that you have a very weak mind and are woefully prepared for an intelligent debate. Your ***** you ***** just hammered the point home even further.
PErhaps you will grow out of it when you graudate junior high. If you already have...then you seriously should kill yourself. You ***** up your life beyond the point of repair then. - deardahl, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm no console expert, but he sounds like a tool.
In a year from now, the PS3 will probably be fine and more people will have HD TVs and better games will be out.
It's not a sprint, but a marathon. Kinda surprised not more people understand this.
Anyways, I'll buy a PS3 and a Wii. No need for 360. - UrfTheWog, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I have the PS3 and recently just bought a PSP. I USED to get torqued about the "PS3 sucks" diatribe. But actually, I WANT people to beat it up. Why? I can see the potential in the hardware and I want people to hammer Sony to make sure they don't slip. Sure the first gen games are OK at best - so what - it's been out for only a few months. I'll probably also buy the next "catch-up" Xbox later this year (Xbox360 is ALSO a great machine).
Please - keep bashing Sony so all the R & D will be well spent- because a year from now it will be a different story. -
