- stealthboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+26The reason they're not releasing the sales numbers is because it's something like 125,000 instead of the 400,000 they predicted. Sure, they sold out quickly, but who cares when it's only 125K units?
Nintendo's 600,000 in 8 days blows them completely out of the water. - flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -6/+18maybe because the ps3 was only half of what people expected.
- jasper976, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11sales were half because units shipped were half, how is that surprising?
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10So what were the sales figures? Sony seems to be way too tight lipped on how many they actually sold at launch.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10I can't say for sure, but I think the 80k in Japan with about 175k in the US is about spot on. This is what the analysts are saying and if Sony disagreed with it they would have launched counter numbers already.
- socalrob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The headline is pretty lame, it does sound anti-PS3 but the article does state due to shortages and low shipments. The article does though make it seem like the PS3 isn't selling well. If you sell out of something it must be good. The Wii has sold 600k units and everywhere I go trying to find one they are always out. Seems to me the same would happen if sony could ship 600k units.
Sony sells on name alone, and they are going to sell out of PS3's right now no matter how many they put out, because its christmas time, and its new, and parents want their kids to stfu... so they buy one to put under the tree. 6 months or so it will die down, but until then they will sell all that they can make.
And the 360 has a year lead on both systems so its unfair to compare 10million units to 600k of the wii and 200k of the ps3. - elitexero, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Didn't they only have a limited shipment, and as far as I know, they all sold.
- 13tongimp, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Yeah, this is a production issue, not sales as the title would have you believe.
Inaccurate - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8More digg anti-PS3 FUD... totally inaccurate head-line, as per usual.
- ForlornHope, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10The Dreamcast is going to take it all.
You read it here first. - giveer, on 10/12/2007, -4/+9Against an innovative new machine, the wii.
Making several bonehead moves/suggestions over a year or more.
Plus a well-timed doorcrasher by the other party (Gears of War)
Being +700 bucks once all the fancies are purchased didn't help either.
This poor-showing was certainly was a train you could see from a distance.
Being the last out of the gate never means they lose though. There's still 3 - 5 years till the next system comes out. - levi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@oxyrubber
6 weeks ago Sony was predicting 400,000 units less than half of what was originally promised, then actually shipped less than half of the 400,000. - hark, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Thats because the sold out... not that it didnt sell.
- FrankieB078, on 10/12/2007, -8/+11I am confused. So your telling me there are still systems I can go buy? The answer is no. I can't go to Best Buy right now and buy one, so therefore, they must have sold all as expected because they cut the units by half.
Article makes no sense. Please stop looking for anti-PS3 stories and go back to playing your Wii.
-Buried. - DaJackall, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I agree, the title is pure BS, but the article is not really supporting any one console. Like other people said, there is huge demand on the wii and ps3, and theyll sell out no matter how many they make. The 360 is also selling well, but the damand (of course) is no where near as high.
- dizzydigg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2
If I were a developer like EA in the story here I'd be pissed.
Seriously, you spend so much money developing a title and the console manufacturer continually drops the number of consoles available at launch and then lies about it up to the last minute...wtf? By the time they get the number of consoles out to actually sell an acceptable number of discs the '07 games are old news - especially with sports titles. - Krayzie_Bone, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4How can sales be lower than expected if there not comming out with more untill after christmas at most places
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9well no one knows how much were shipped, but sales?
say shipment, it is directly related to sales.
@ furtwan1:
that is assuming no one else will buy the PS3 later on, you know. If you just posted how much the 360 sold at launch, then you would have had a point. But every PS3 has sold out, and there is still demand. - se1zure, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3so ea expected them to sell out twice on launch?
- DaJackall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In not positive, but I think its more like 6 - 10 years for the next console. But who cares about that? This generation of consoles has barely even started
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Headline is inaccurate according to the article. Buried as such.
- agentstewie, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4u kidding me... how can you say only half were sold.
this article makes no sense .. stop posting anti ps3 ***** - seandaly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Can tell either an Xbox or Wii fanboy posted this, notice that they left out the rest of the sentence that explains the low sales numbers were due to shortages.
Digg post = "EA Chief Says Sony PS3 Sales Were Only Half of What Was Expected"
Article = "Electronic Arts Inc. CEO Larry Probst said on Wednesday that initial sales of Sony Corp.'s new PlayStation 3 were half of what the console giant had targeted, due to shortages."
That said, Sony is totally ***** for 06!!! - G-Force, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I think PS3 could have sold as many units as nintendo did no problem. However Sony as a company has been struggling in their home electronics dept including computers.
After seeing what PS3 games really looked like it is in my opinion that it is no more powerful then 360. Sony did the same thing with PS2 that is market pre rendered videos as actual gameplay. They overhyped their machines graphics and yet do not have the nicest looking game. Sony will no doubt come out with games but I think if they don't lower that price tag eventually next year they will loose a lot more exclusives and the PS3 will die faster the Steve Irwin in a tank full of sting rays. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11. Only a fool judges a new console by the launch titles. We all know how much trouble developers had adjusting to the PS2, history is repeating itself.
2. The word 'lose' when used as an antonym to 'win' only has one o. - QACJared, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Now that Steve is dead it just aint as funny.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1blargh. negative dig the frog. *insert snide Wii comment here*
- oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4From TFA: "a clear winner will not be known for as long as five years."
I'm willing to bet otherwise. If there is a winner at all, we will know by the end of next year. - oxyrubber, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3It depends on when you look at expectations.
A year ago no one knew (for sure) there would be such a shortfall in supply of the BluRay lasers and low yields of cell processors. Six weeks ago everyone knew about both of these (and hence expectations should have matched actual supply/sales of PS3 consoles).
Demand for PS3 games is completely dependent upon availablilty of the consoles and how willing PS3 owners are to purchasing multiple game titles at leaunch time. - ThinkBox, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2yeah all console and no games
- luke9807, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0oooooooooooooooooooooooo
this is how it works ea sells games to stores stores sell games for more money to the customer so pls do tell how ea would lose money?
and 360 is complete crap and the only real real reason WII sold out like it did was beacause ps3 was all sold out
not saying its that bad ive played it its fun to play but the games look like *****
and 200,000 was to north america dont mean they didnt sell more than that - johnsto, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The real point to this news (it's been reported elsewhere as well) is not that it "only" sold 125,000-200,000 units, but the fact that Sony had explicitly said there would be ***400,000*** shipped to America.
i.e. Sony only shipped half the PS3s they said they would. - staticneuron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"Electronic Arts CEO Larry Probst announced today that, although Sony shipped fewer PlayStation 3's than he expected, EA's overall holiday sales so far have met or slightly exceeded his expectations. Even though the company's overall sales outlook was positive, the PS3 shortage and the disappointing Superman Returns: The Videogame pushed the company's shares down by almost 2 percent."
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/748/748170p1.html - razordancer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0The title isn't misleading... Just read this story:
Sony makes PS3.
EA makes games.
Sony says 400,000 PS3s will ship.
EA ships X% of 400,000 games (Game sales are directly tied to console sales!)
Sony ships ~200,000 PS3s. (Roughly 50% of estimated volume)
PS3 sells out immediately.
EA sells 50% less games than they were expecting, the other 50% sit on a shelf. - shelle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Bottom line: Sony still pwned THEMSELVES.
- Tantrum, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Sure it's hard to make back your money when the market is only 200,000 people. But it also doesn't help that almost every game you released this year for Xbox360 has been utter JUNK. And now with all this 'Charge for Everything' going on, people don't want to play your garbage even if there's nothing else to play.
- SSCrow, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1http://www.vgcats.com/comics/images/061012.jpg
I believe this applies to the article. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5"Against an innovative new machine, the wii."
The Wii is neither new nor innovative. It's just a repackaged Gamecube. However the controllers might be considered innovative. - xenovis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1http://ps3contest.ytmnd.com
*shameless - waytoorandomx, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2I saw this coming.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -20/+8so... 8,000,000 360's vs <200,000 ps3's. Bet sony wishes they didn't delay 1 year.
