- olddirtycr, on 10/11/2007, -13/+62Microsofts E3 conference :
"Look at this brand new halo painted xbox!!!" *crickets* - jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -9/+54No announced price drop from Microsoft really surprised me. No Metal Gear surprised me more. No 65nm or hardware fixes just blew me away. None of the pre E3 rumors for X360 panned out.
- Sparke, on 10/11/2007, -3/+42It wouldn't be wise to cut the price until after Halo launches. You know it's going to sell a lot of consoles, so why sell yourself short? People want Halo, they'll pay whatever it takes to play it on the 360, so ride that train while it's hot, then cut the price after the holidays.
- dunezone, on 10/11/2007, -3/+35Oh man that was great, he held that thing up and everyone in the crowd was thinking, "thats nice but we already own 360's you jackass".
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -5/+28You caught that too, I actually felt bad for Moore. He had to clap for himself.
- alvinrod, on 10/11/2007, -3/+25They'll probably save the price cut until closer to the holiday season or once they manage to get a new revised hardware design in production. Waiting until the holidays might help to generate more buzz. Either that or with the new extended warranties, they can't afford to cut the prices quite yet.
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -1/+22Another great entry by Destructoid...they quote Shane Kim, but didn't bother to actually read the whole interview, where he said Microsoft need to lower the price: "We need to compete effectively for that customer and part of that is getting to the mass market price point for the console,'' said Kim. ``We definitely are working on that area.''
hardly shrugging their shoulders :p - DogEars, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15Between GTA4 and Halo3, why would they bother? You will have your price cut after those system sellers ship, and before the holiday sales rush.
- battletrax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Just read the comments on that site.. hilarious.
"I don't think GTA can be considered a "System seller""
The Grand Theft Auto Series has sold 43 million on the ps2 alone!
http://vgchartz.com/worldtotals.php?name=Grand+Theft+Auto&console=PS2&publisher=&sort=Total - Sirocco, on 10/11/2007, -10/+22>> The 360 is easy to develop for, so there isn't much more optimization
>> that can be done to 360 games to make them better
So you think ease of development equates to a lack of room for optimization? That is likely the dumbest thing I'm going to read all day. Hell, probably through the whole weekend. - Ajajadude, on 10/11/2007, -2/+13Is that maybe why they're called rumors and there is never any reason to believe them until they're officially announced as being true?
I don't see how Microsoft could've given a price cut given the chunk of change they're throwing down the drain on the extended warranties. One can only hope for Microsoft's sake that they aren't forced into issuing recalls if it's found that the hardware design they've been using is defective. - Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -5/+15They just admitted its defective
- totorototoro, on 10/11/2007, -5/+14Not to mention, its hard to lower the price when you just had to write off ONE BILLION DOLLARS for the extended warranty and repairs for the red ring of death :p
- inactive, on 10/11/2007, -9/+17I really don't know who the hell would buy the halo edition 360, I mean besides the mindless fanboys
its greyish-green, and looks like ***** - tpzoso, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Lol, Microsoft can afford to do pretty much anything.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11Cap locks don't make what you say true.
- SSCrow, on 10/11/2007, -1/+8its not as loud as people complain it is.
You could hear it if you listened for it. But if you have the volume on your TV at a typical volume, its covered. - joaob, on 10/11/2007, -3/+10It's show and prove time. I am hearing a lot of talk about how powerful the PS3 is but I am not seeing it. So until then it is just talk.
American Muscle cars with huge V8's get their butt's kicked on the track all day by little 4 banger Japanese cars.
Its not about whats under the hood...its how you use it. Of course I've never heard that line before ;) - BurntToast, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9The 360 does not need a price cut. Well, it would be nice to have a price cut sure... but MSFT isn't desperate to up sales like Sony was with the PS3. The PS3 is still more expensive even with the price cut.
There's still plenty of time this year... besides, announcing a price cut now would have been a non-event. If MSFT wants to do a price cut, they'll do it either right before Halo 3 launches or before the holiday shopping season... then it'll be an event. - watership, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Looks like the PS3 price cut is temporary.
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=26704
Once the 60 GB is sold out, it won't be restocked, and the 80 GB model will be the default PS3 @ $599 USD. The 60 GB is expected to sell out in the by the end of the month. Is this a screwed up price cut bait and switch? Or is it a ploy to sell 60 GB PS3 right away..? - frygar, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8I kinda feel bad for them. On one side, you have Nintendo, going after the casual gamer with titles like WiiSports and WiiFit. On the other, you have Sony, who are attracting the high-end HD hardcore users. Both Sony and Nintendo *know* their market. And in the middle, you've got MS, who started off going after the high-end crowd, but once getting a whiff of Nintendo's success, started to waffle. So sales are stagnant, the games are alright, but we're treated to... a new xbox SKU and pastel gamepads?
"Halo 3, guys, just keep on telling yourself that." - Shaflugi, on 10/11/2007, -2/+8The Wii is basically an overclocked Gamecube, though.
Don't you dare digg me down, you know it's true. - Shaflugi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5What resolution are UMD movies..?
- Aldhelm, on 10/11/2007, -3/+8It would the foolish for Microsoft to have a price cut. If I remember correctly they were making a 70-100$ profit for every console sold. Halo 3 is going to come out in a couple of months. We all know what that means. The game will be leaving shops faster then the French collapse at the Battle Of France.
Microsoft could sell at least an extra million 360s. If they bundle Halo 3 and start to promote it they could sell more. Then when the sales falls down to their normal level. That's when they should cut the price.
For me. I'm saving up to buy a 360. But I won't tills the 65 nm version comes out. - DragonQuester, on 10/11/2007, -4/+9Is the system really that noisy now?
- scyform, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6seriously...who cares? you're comparing your car-penis to someone's analogy...
unlike the 5.0, the ps3 is pretty to look at ;P - oolatin79, on 10/11/2007, -6/+11"The 360 is easy to develop for, so there isn't much more optimization that can be done to 360 games to make them better. "
I'm assuming you know nothing about software development here, so I'll give you a pass. However, in general, a robust(aka "easy") API (programming toolset) decreases core development time, thus allowing more room for optimization (making things prettier). Also, just because the PS3's hardware is more powerful than the 360, it doesn't mean that 360 games will not continue to evolve along with PS3 games. As "joaob" stated, american muscle cars with huge V8's get smoked by 4 banger japanese cars all the time. - VirtualCtor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7For sure, but what makes you think that improvement won't happen with other consoles?
- Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8Hardware fixes were already in place prior to E3.
- taxman, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4MS is in kinda of a catch 22 situation.. The 360 sales have stagnated but its still heaps above PS3. Plus almost all their hyped games have made tons of money cos the attach rate is pretty high. They were looking to turn this division into a profitable one his year but the 1 billion extended warranty bill postponed that.
Either they can stick with this price and hope that Bioshock,Halo,GTA and Mass effect offsets sonys price cut or they can drop the price and lose more money. I am sure they are watching PS3 sales closely and if in the next 2 months, PS3 hardware sales exceeds the 360 sales, i am sure they will cut the price. - puppethead, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5"but as Sony shaves off $100 from the PlayStation 3's price"
You missed the "in america" part off that, in Europe unless sony follow through with a price cut the PS3 is finished. No one is going to throw £425 ($850) on a games console. - ibeetle, on 10/11/2007, -6/+10Microsoft is tuning into a one note tune.
Hey, Microsoft you are having your ass handed to you by Nintendo.
Microsoft's response: Halo 3
Hey, Microsoft Sony stands a chance ( a real good chance) of playing a little catch-up.
Halo 3 everybody... Halo 3
Hey, Microsoft the Playstation 3 is out selling your system in almost every market except the U.S. and is quickly becoming the number 2 guy.
Halo 3 is coming... just wait... look we even have a Halo 3 military green XBox and Zune.
Hey Microsoft your system has a 30% failure rate... and there is growing evidence that it maybe higher (substantially higher). So bad you took a 1 Billion dollar hit in repair/replacement cost. Are you going to improve the quality of your game consoles?
Yes!... Right after we release Halo 3. - Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Sales AREN'T that low though. They're lower than they were, but not low.
- otatop, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Comments don't do anything. Diggs are the only thing that can make an article more popular.
- johnnliu, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5If everyone in the crowd already own 360's, a price cut wouldn't exactly benefit them either I think.
It would have helped with buying a new one should their old one break down, but the 3 year extended warranty kind of covered that ground already. - Zipp425, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I think that even though they just gave up a ton of money for the warranty, they will cut the price for holiday season to get ride of the rest of the bad consoles before they make the switch to the new 65nm chips.
- SSCrow, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5Xbots huh?
Sounds like someone is biased against Microsoft. - Bega, on 10/11/2007, -4/+6poorly designed kiosks with poor ventilation are no reason to hate on the system. If the 360 was on that, odds are it'd probably go red ring of death on you.
Also come on now, stop buying into that crap; the previous model was 60 gb, they dropped that price to 500, and released a new (albeit barely upgraded) model for the old price. - aguraki, on 10/11/2007, -5/+7You're a cheap bastard. Have a nice day :)
- OwdenBowden, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3If you were to ask the developers which current (nextGen) system they wanted to develop for they would all say (in order) 360, Wii and none would say PS3. Why? Because 360 and Wii are easier to develope for even with the new XNA architecture where as the PS3 is way too complicated. The fact that it uses the 3cell processor makes it super time consuming and about triple the cost to develope for. That is why most of the games for PS3 are still developed with the PS2 architecture and then Upconverted for PS3. Don't fool yourself in believing that since the PS3 is slightly more powerful that it is the best to create new content for. A great way to look at the Development angle and why the 360 is the ***** right now (except the Wii for the wemote but I still say that is going to get playout fast) is to consider the fact that You can go out and create the most powerful computer with zillions of processing power and 100 Gigs of ram with the best of the best in sound and graphics cards but if you are still hooked up to a 56K modem then it don;t matter how mighty you are as you are at the mercy of the connection.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2And they're discontinuing the $499 version by August. It was basically a hoax.
- watership, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Recalls happen, when all units are prone to failure. you know that's not the case, but you call it a defective pos. 360 not selling in japan has nothing to do with it's build quality, and the cultural differences in terms of games and buying choice.
- jacksons98, on 10/11/2007, -12/+14What Charlescheese says is correct. All Playstation consoles have been a pain to develop for, but as time goes on they prove the technology is there. Games just get better and better. Look at what they are getting out of PS2 today, it's unbelievable when you see games like Rogue Galaxy and God of War2. All indicators say PS3 is the same way.
- Elranzer, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2480 x 272
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2To be fair, the day before E3 he said he was looking into 360 development.
- vinhcenthao, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Sony's price cut wasn't in relation to Europe though, again Sony screws Europe. But at least Microsoft announced Europe are getting a video marketplace now and the 360 Elite. Lets all be honest and say this E3 DID suck.
- otatop, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3Because Destructoid games the system to get their stories front paged.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Microsoft would be stupid not to enact a price drop on all 360 SKUs and cut the core system.
The Elite looks like a terrible deal compared to the $500 PS3... Don't get me wrong, I love my 360, but $30 more and you get wifi, a fairly comparable hard drive, a BluRay player, and an extremely powerful console (whether or not it has enough compelling games, the hardware inside of the PS3 is more advanced by far).
To get a unit that's comparable to what the PS3 offers you for $500 now, you need to spend $470 + $170 + $100 ($740).
It initially doesn't seem like a crazy price difference (and it's nice to be able to choose whether or not you pay for a high-def disc player), but now that it's just a $30 difference, it is a bigger deal than it was when there was a $130 difference. - Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Perceived va-? Stop pulling ***** out of your arse please.
- Myonosken, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Indeed. I was rather surprised at the extent that Sony has forgotten about Europe. I know so few people with a PS3 tbh, and it's a shame- if it could sort out it's strategy and get developers back on board, it could very well get back on top. As of now, gamestation in Sheffield city centre is selling 8 PS3s a week :-/.
