- drtyfrnk, on 12/20/2007, -3/+122Duke Nukem: How can it blow us away?
By actually coming out in the next century. - LordSeth, on 12/20/2007, -3/+51Man I hope censorship doesn't grab this game by the balls and make it tame.
- arcooke, on 12/20/2007, -1/+40DNF doesn't need to blow us away. All it has to do is bring back what Duke Nukem used to be, with more updated technology.
Look at Doom3. Don't get me wrong, Doom3 was a great game.. but it didn't feel like Doom. They made it darker, scarier, and more serious than it used to feel. It just didn't seem like Doom anymore, and I don't want that to happen to DNF. - sanman, on 12/20/2007, -2/+33Duke Nukem 1 took 1 year to make.
Duke Nukem 2 took 2 years to make.
Duke Nukem Forever is gonna take...? - mlerner, on 12/20/2007, -3/+30Guns and naked strippers are all we need in a game.
- BrandonMills, on 12/20/2007, -2/+28Be a great co-op FPS. Co-op FPS games are rare and awesome.
- inactive, on 12/20/2007, -0/+17Can you imagine getting paid to work on the same project for 10 years, I mean really.
- bmson, on 12/20/2007, -1/+17Now they are gonna read this article and start working on it again...
- holysocks, on 12/20/2007, -0/+15What Duke3D had was interactivity, personality, and awesome level/weapon designs. IMHO, even compared with today's best fps games on those categories, it can hold it's own quite well, if not better. All Duke Nukem Forever needs to do is build on that and give us more of what made the original great.
- ShogunWarPig, on 12/20/2007, -1/+14Coming out on the PC (where it belongs) before the new NVIDIA 36-gillions release.
- mikecc, on 12/20/2007, -7/+18Im almost 19 now and I still love the potty humor. I'm gonna rip off your neck and ***** down your throat!!!!!
- L4WL3RS34L, on 12/20/2007, -6/+16If you think graphics is what makes a good game, you shouldn't be allowed to play games.
- belfastga, on 12/20/2007, -1/+11I'd agree, but it really comes down to how the subject material is presented. I love South Park, but can't stand Drawn Together, for instance. Some just do it right, and I'm hoping DNF will be one of those things.
- soganess, on 12/20/2007, -6/+16By actually coming out.
There, I fixed it for you. - dngermouse, on 12/20/2007, -3/+12by existing
- accessviolation, on 12/20/2007, -0/+9Duke Nukem 3D had co-op.
- GoKings, on 12/20/2007, -2/+11I can't tell you how many times as a kid I clicked on those strippers in Duke Nukem 3D to see them flash their boobs with tassels on them.
Checklist:
-Big Ass Guns
-Strippers
-Shrink Ray
-Cool One Liners
-Lots and lots of blood
-Coming out on 360 before there's an XBOX 1080
What more could a man ask for? - Fracture98, on 12/20/2007, -0/+9That statement is either backwards or really deep.
- TheFiestyFaun, on 12/20/2007, -5/+13It could blow us away by not coming out in 2015.
- dvsbastard, on 12/20/2007, -1/+9Considering the first comment is a standard generic statement which adds nothing to the topic... and it was posted by the "Founder, Editor, Illustrator, and Designer behind ripten.com" (from the user profile) AND it was followed by a few more generic comments... Are you surprised they were getting buried?!
- SlappyMc, on 12/20/2007, -1/+8I think they were buried because they all look like lame spam posts.. They look like they were paid a few cents to say something positive about the article so it could make front page.
- belfastga, on 12/20/2007, -0/+6Yeah, but there's only one Duke!
- Jereso, on 12/20/2007, -1/+7It can blow it out your ass.
- Xsecrets, on 12/20/2007, -1/+6LMAO!!
I know we've switched engines three times, but now we have to start over again this article gave me some new ideas - zeptobyte, on 12/20/2007, -3/+7It can blow me away by.. oh I don't know.. being released?
- epyon8282, on 12/20/2007, -0/+4i dont even care if its good or not. I just wanna see if they'll release it, lol....10 years in the making, it had better be the best damm game since pong....
- Disease, on 12/20/2007, -1/+5Way to mess up the quote.
- saltinekracka20, on 12/20/2007, -4/+8Buried for typical digger use of the word "elitest".
- astrotrain, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3This whole Duke Nuk'em thing needs to be part of a Futurama episode, where Fry finds the 3DRealms programmers heads in a jar still working on the game.
- MrsFisty, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4Totally agree with the point of 3D Realms needing to do something new and bold with this one. Last thing we want is another Doom 3 exercise.
By the way, anyone else think Duke bears an uncanny resemblance to Mickey Rourke? - rezist, on 12/20/2007, -2/+5apparently everyone else likes blowing $50-60 on a six hour experience
- Wang, on 12/20/2007, -1/+4Let's be honest....after the time it's taken (and may still take) to arrive....no, there is no way that it is going to be worth it or perhaps even "blow us away" in the same way that other games have in the past. However, in my opinion...you shouldn't expect this game to blow you away, it's really just meant to be a bit of fun and (for most of us) a blast from the past to remind us of younger years spent laughing at his quotes :) Just enjoy the game when it comes out, and don't worry about whether it's "killer" or whether it "blows you away". That's all I will be doing, enjoying it.
- Cornrider, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Speak for yourself, 3DRealms doesn't have to prove anything to me. I will always love Duke Nukem and don't care waiting 20 years more. As soon as it comes out I'll buy it and enjoy it. Don't care about anything jaded gaming critics have to say.
- terminalpariah, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3It's been delayed so many times because they've been trying to blow us away. I don't think they have the talent to keep up with the rest of the industry.
That's why I think 3drealms should put out DLC for existing games that inserts Duke as the main character.
Duke visits Rapture
Duke versus the Combine
Call of Duke 4
Get Jon St. John to record some pop culture quips, hack together a wacky shrink gun, and put it on Marketplace for 800 points. - RyanElston, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Prey - Native American angle + jetpack + shrink ray + strippers + bigger guns = Duke Nukem Forever
- Megatog615, on 12/20/2007, -0/+32nd player is a hot stripper.
- rtgordon, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3I don't need to be blown away. I just want the game to be fun.
- conkers209, on 12/20/2007, -0/+3Just release the game and that will blow me away.
- BearinG, on 12/20/2007, -1/+39000 is the limit allowed for forever.
- h0ly, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2- An easy-to-use level editor, like the old one was.
It was so much fun creating your own maps and inviting friends to play on it! - ozanweb, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't worry about it. If that happened, it wouldn't be "this game" in the first place. I would be the first one to reject a clean and tame Duke Nukem as a Duke Nukem and wait in line for the actual Duke Nukem to come out.
- belfastga, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3Some people have suggested Bruce Willis, but I could see Mickey Rourke done up like Marv from Sin City.
- rezist, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3I was going to speak to that with a long response but I'm just so dissapointed...
- qwertydvorak, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2i agree. i wasn't impressed with quake or unreal tournament in online play near as much as duke 3d. nothing beats the laser trip mines.
- johnny23, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2Holoduke!
- fuzzynyanko, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2It'll blow us away just by releasing on time in 2009.
- Archaic1, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2There's something odd about alien pig cops and getting health from taking a leak too. The more Duke the better imo
- Cerebral, on 12/20/2007, -0/+2I could see a game that is gritty like Gears of War with Duke. Hell I would love Gears with Duke in it :)
- Archaic1, on 12/21/2007, -0/+2Excellent, that leaves them free for other stuff. ... like eating ...
- belfastga, on 12/20/2007, -1/+3If you'll give me a moment to clarify, I was emphasizing that the most important thing Duke Nukem Forever could do was feel like a logical update to the series. Let's say we'd gotten DNF in '97 or 2000 (or any other time that would've been reasonable for a game's development). What kind of game would we have now? DNF2? DNF3? What kinds of evolutions would've taken place for this particular series with each new iteration?
Instead, we could end up with a game that comes out in 2008, but feels like it was really made a decade ago. Duke Nukem Forever really does need to incorporate at least some of the general advances that have been made to the genre in recent years, but it should not compromise its own direction. Half-Life's got its story, HALO's got its AI and multiplayer. Duke's niche is being an over-the-top badass, and it's going to have the keep that up in order to make itself stand out in today's world, because there aren't many games that pull that kind of character off very well.
Evolution, not compromise, is the key. -
