- Narrwald, on 12/06/2007, -3/+382Sega protecting the Dreamcast IP... Nothing more.
- djSyndrome, on 12/06/2007, -6/+316Doubtful - Sega has neither the capital, hardware R&D or the goodwill with the public to attempt another console. This is likely just to prevent DC knockoffs.
- Culex, on 12/06/2007, -21/+252It'll never happen, sadly.
- SEGA4life, on 12/06/2007, -11/+219O Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!
- slicecom, on 12/06/2007, -13/+109*DROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL*
- mCanada, on 12/06/2007, -1/+94Powerbook G5? Google Phone? Dukenukem Forever? Dreamcast 2?
- toxicityj, on 12/06/2007, -1/+65speculation is fun and all, but lets be real. its not happening.
- KingGoonie, on 12/06/2007, -1/+62Can this maybe mean DC games will find there way to XBLA, VC, or PSN maybe? Not sure if that has anything to do with anything lol, but its what my uninformed mind thought.
And I want Jet Grind Radio. - Rikushix, on 12/06/2007, -0/+48Yes, the argument was unspoken.
...I think you mean "moot". - benmakesmovies, on 12/06/2007, -4/+51The Dreamcast is my favorite system of all time... but that doesn't mean that a "Dreamcast 2" would be automatically good by the virtue of the fact that it was made by Sega. Just look at the Sega CD. And the 32X. And the Saturn.
- IdanE, on 12/06/2007, -0/+45This just isn't going to happen, for way too many reasons:
1. Creating the HW is costly, and I'm guessing that they'd have to front the money for the initial batch.
2. They're creating games with Nintendo characters, and letting Nintendo use their chars in Nintendo games (smash bros)
3. They would have to stop creating games for other consoles, which has proven a better model from a financial view.
4. They would have to get 3rd parties to develop games for their platform, when they are already stretched too thin developing for 3-7 platforms (PC, Wii, X360, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS).
All the evidence points to them staying a 3rd party. The renewal is pretty much them protecting their IP, and maybe eventually them re-releasing DC games - via VC, XBox Arcade, etc.
I wonder if the Genesis, SMS, GC, SNES, nomad, game gear and all those other name copy rights are being kept - I'm guessing those are probably in the same status (if possible).
It's a nice dream, but from a realistic view, it's simply not going to happen - they've got too much of their IPs on other platforms for it to make financial sense atm - perhaps in the next generation though ;) - missingnoh4x, on 12/06/2007, -0/+45I think they're just protecting the name so that they can later introduce Dreamcast games to XBLA, PSN, or the VC.
- heartless_, on 12/06/2007, -3/+33Sounds about right.
- estacado, on 12/06/2007, -4/+31Now I have to buy 4 consoles? This just sucks.
- felipecn, on 12/06/2007, -1/+28But there's not a Google Phone. Android is a platafform for mobile phones, not a phone :)
- NightStryke, on 12/06/2007, -0/+27baseballs retire?
- SmackMyMac, on 12/06/2007, -1/+27I was under the impression that the hardware section of sega was no more.
- Korexz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+20Umm... Sonic in the Olymipic game and Smash Bros...
I sense an alliance between Sega and Nintendo. Virtual Dreamcast 2... - CSharpSauce, on 12/06/2007, -1/+21See the Dreamcast 2 will ultimately be ahead of its time... so it'll die.
- Marcone, on 12/06/2007, -1/+19They gave up on the Dreamcast too quickly for me to ever buy a Sega branded console ever again.
- Abestar, on 12/06/2007, -0/+18I'd buy it.
- MarkOfTheDead, on 12/07/2007, -0/+18He said witty replies.
- timewarp424, on 12/06/2007, -1/+19Unlike a cave where one would expect to hear an echo, here, on Digg, it's annoying to see a comment repeated.
- hexydes, on 12/06/2007, -0/+18Sitting on the shelves of your local retailer. Why, do you want one?
- SonnyW, on 12/06/2007, -3/+20Not to be overly critical here, but would another gaming system even make a difference? Besides three consoles and the PC, what would this new console have to offer we don't already have? Especially considering so many games are multi-system already and the differences between consoles and even pc are shrinking (except maybe whe Wii, which is trying something different and can't handle many current-gen games).
The only possible benefit I can see from a Dreamcast 2 is giving SEGA an incentive to make some games, but they don't need their very own console to do that. - AirRaven, on 12/06/2007, -0/+15And Sonic Heroes.
- plizard, on 12/06/2007, -1/+16this has been a rumor since 2002. and yet sega continues to say no
- exscind, on 12/06/2007, -2/+17While that is likely true, it's possible that this could signal something.
For example, it could point to a "Dreamcast Classics" branded line of Wii games. This would be in line with the announcement of Sega Bass Fishing for Wii. Other properties like House of the Dead and Samba de Amigo are being revisited in various capacities, so you never know. The Dreamcast had a few peripherals which could translate over to the Wii remote (mouse, light gun, fishing rod, microphone, maracas). There are two more fishing Sega games from the DC lineup, as well as a number of light games and original Sega IP titles, not to mention third party Dreamcast exclusives.
Theory #2: The Dreamcast is a weapon/item in the new Smash Bros. I kid. - Laughto, on 12/06/2007, -1/+15Following the 360 from the sounds of it?
- Nat3r, on 12/06/2007, -1/+14the first dreamcast was amazing
people just didnt buy it - zeejay, on 12/06/2007, -0/+13Maybe this is what Capcom's been waiting for to release PowerStone 3. One can dream.
- wolvyne, on 12/06/2007, -0/+13I still play my old dreamcast. Power Stone!
- polymyxin, on 12/06/2007, -0/+13Dude, you're on Digg.
- NickyBatts, on 12/06/2007, -4/+16Oh man... this rules... what they should do though, is release the Saturn as the 2D world beater it was meant to be...
- krisscofield, on 12/06/2007, -3/+15I can't believe this is news. There will never be a DreamCast 2. That's like hoping for a follow up console to TurboGraffix16.
- Shaflugi, on 12/06/2007, -2/+14I don't think the Wii has the powah to emulate Dreamcast games.
- Step1Mark, on 12/06/2007, -1/+13games aren't coded in CE... thats just the micro OS that was used to get online and such.
- samfishercell, on 12/06/2007, -8/+20It would be fun and all, but four systems = no. Then again, the PS3 is hobbling around on one tiny leg and a crutch, maybe the Dreamcast2 could give it a leg-sweep :)
- alexiel, on 12/06/2007, -1/+13I think Sega learned their lesson from their past loss, regardless of how great DC was. In any case...I'd buy a DC2.
- Korexz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11Obviously someone never had a Dreamcast... bitter?
- wolfzombie, on 12/06/2007, -1/+12I was one of the suckers that bought into the 32X hype. I think those who bought one should be able to trade it in for a free Dreamcast 2, or at least $150 off if it does come out...
- Walgreenz, on 12/06/2007, -0/+11In the PC gaming industry it is very easy to pirate games. Its still around.
- balance07, on 12/06/2007, -0/+10hoping for something that has existed for 13 years (in japan)?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC-FX - iRoy, on 12/06/2007, -3/+13LOL, Joke of the day right here.
- inactive, on 12/06/2007, -2/+12MS can afford to run at a loss, sega cant. Just thought Id bring you upto speed since your woefully ignorant.
- justice7, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10Simple, dont buy every damn console out there.
Wii60 makes sense... but not PSWii60. - Shaflugi, on 12/06/2007, -4/+13Well we can ***** hope
- edicius, on 12/06/2007, -4/+13Probably not, but if there is one I will buy it. Hell, I'll even donate to help them produce it.
- MerryMortician, on 12/06/2007, -1/+10SoulCalibur! ftw.
- sonycam, on 12/06/2007, -0/+9I hate you for saying it, but it's the truth.
