- LiquidChimera, on 10/11/2007, -2/+15I bought this new just for the FFXII demo and after a few months put in DQ8 and had a blast for all 80 hours. Fantastic game
- solemnraven, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13Umm, no.
Dragon's lair dude, FTW
that games was hilarious....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragons_lair - thatsmyaibo, on 10/11/2007, -1/+13Uhhh, have fun with that.
- darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I'm a little surprised at so many negative comments about DQ8... this is my kind of game... I just can't get into modern RPGs, and going old school like this makes me tear up just a tad. I'm very much looking forward to DQ9 on the DS!
- somesthetic, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Dragon Quest VIII was awesome. Hardcore old school RPG with a great visual look and really funny and likeable characters.
I even started to care about Medea, and she was a horse most of the game!
80+ hours to beat, and I've still got stuff to do if I wanted to go back.
That bingo healslime was totally cheating though. - darthsabbath, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5You are so wrong on that... I'm playing it in wide screen now.
- tchawla, on 10/11/2007, -3/+7I bought this game when it was at $20 and I found it to be a little drab. I'm not a huge fan of traditionalist RPGs (such as this one, with a bare bones turn based system and random battles). I played it for a little bit but found it was basically find town, find dungeon near town, do objective in dungeon, rinse, repeat. Found the battles to be pretty redundant too, and a lot of grinding necessary to increase levels.
That's not to say there's nothing good about the game, if you're a fan of traditional RPGs it is definitely worth a try, especially at $10, but be aware, there isn't much revolutionary going on here :) - NoHandle, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4I enjoyed the game, but the random battles drove me nuts. That and the 30 second into to each battle and another 30 seconds when you win. Don't get me wrong, playing the game for the story and battles was fun, watching the same 30 second scene over and over and over... not so fun
- MCGrunge1, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4Yes sir. Dragon Warrior was what the US version was called. It's always been Dragon Quest in Japan.
- ryllharu, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4There is an actual law in Japan that prevents Dragon Quest games from being released on a weekday. So many adults and children skipped work or school to get one of the games and there was some violence so the law was created. *That's* how popular these games are.
- crisisaverted, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That battle sequence video reminds me of the older games where it was *impossible* to kill metal slimes. Love the animation in this one. Price is right!

sorry, but the comment system is hating on my apostrophe so go copy paste it. - rotarychainsaw, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Dugg for a good game. I'm like 75 hours in, maybe it's time to finish it up.
- astyanax, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Yes, Miss Jessica's tatas alone are worth the $10 outlay; her animations make some of the dragging sections of the game worth it.
- SLSSNAKE, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I picked up this game last summer and it lasted me a good two months. Absolutely excellent, especially for those out of classes for a few months and need a game that will take up a large chunk of time. There's a lot to do in this game, you will definitely get your money's worth.
- bmdhacks, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Just wanted to add my agreement.
Dragon Quest VIII is probably my favorite game I've played for the PS2. I am very much an old-school RPG fan, but this game really brought back the wonder and enjoyment I'd felt when playing older games like Chrono Cross or the early Final Fantasies. What really makes this game great is the amount of polish. From the light hearted, but gorgeous cell-shaded graphics, to the exceptional character voice acting. This isn't really a game where they tried to break into a new paradigm, but instead make the very-best rendition of a classic game genre. Which is fine by me, since I really like the RPG genre. - iRoy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I'm thinking about getting this.
XII was the last great RPG I finished, I've been thinking about getting Oblivion for PS3 but I don't know Dragon Quest might be a better purchase. Easier on my wallet too. - manmademark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Help me Remember:
There was a game a long time ago for P.C. (I mean a really long time ago before duke nukem 3D) where it was animated and you were a knight (i think your name was alric) and you had to play through this ridiculous narrative where you had to like click on a rope, or an exit way at the right time or your character would die. I thought it was named Dragon quest.. but that is apparently what this article is about and is an entirely diffrent game. It was one of the most original RPGs ever. They made a port to the super nintendo some years later but it was this horribly shoddy side scrolling game that had nothing to do with its P.C. brother. I know this is really vauge and all but scratch your heads and help me out, much appreciated! - tEhKewleSt, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Sydicate by Bullfrog is one of my favorite games of all time. Miniguns FTW.
- kefs, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2http://www.hardcoreware.net/dragons-lair-blu-ray-java-review/
Dragon's Lair.. on Blu-Ray... Playable with your BDPlayer/PS3 Remote.. ftw? - littlesquall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2@apoc06
Actually, it didn't regain the name Dragon Quest in North America until Dragon Quest VIII on PS2. Dragon Quest VII on PSone was released as Dragon Warrior VII in North America. - ComradeCreed, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy compliment each other quite well. While Final Fantasy goes for innovation in both gameplay and story, it's sometimes fails...and sadly it sometimes fails on both counts (I'm not going to name titles, but I think you know which ones I mean.) But Dragon Quest, while simple, is amazingly consistent. Whenever I get a Dragon Quest game, I know what I'm getting.
And for those who don't like the game, you might just not be in the right frame of mind while playing it. Dragon Quest games (especially Dragon Quest VIII) are meant to be explored. That's why the level arcs are so high. It's so that you wont become over-leveled while exploring the world. If you feel as though you must "grind" levels while playing Dragon Quest, it's because you are in the "Leave point A, go to point B" frame of mind set by other, much more linear RPGs. - JayRD, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Already played it and loved every second of it. I've clocked about 200 combined(2 saves) hours on it. My friend tried it but he hated because it was too "childish". His loss.
- Yez70, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2I so rocked at Dragon's Lair at the arcade. Man, I feel old...
- littlesquall, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Interesting tidbit from the article that I did not know. Dragon Quest IX is going to be on 2 DS cards. Wonder how save games will work with the swapping. What's the largest capacity of the DS card so far?
- jdoo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This is really one of the great RPG's for PS2. If you are a fan at all of old school combat style RPG's then this game is for you. I put over 70 hours into this one and loved every minute of it.
- spyrochaete, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Is Dragon Quest the same series as Dragon Warrior?
- Almadiel, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is one of my favorite recent RPGs. Also find it interesting that the original japanese version had no voice acting and no orchestrated music, best localization ever.
- timpkmn89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1EDIT: wrong spot
- manmademark, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1yes, thanks! Dragon's Lair. KQV & KQVI are still great though, have them on my P.C. still, along with all the Larry's and syndiate by bullfrog.
- timpkmn89, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1@ryllharu
Actually it's not a law. The government just asked them to release it on Sundays - apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1originally it was released as dragon quest in japan. it sold well, so they decided to bring it to the states. since back then american console players were turned off by rpgs for the most part [they pretty much stayed that way until FFVII], they pushed it with a massive ad campaign in nintendo power and tv.
when they brought it across the ocean, there was another game called draqon quest, so they renamed it dragon warrior. the series didnt regain the name dragon quest until DQ VII on the playstation. - caddyalan, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Well, the old Nintendo games were made in the 8-bit era. In fact, the first one was created in 1986, which is probably why the towns and castles have odd appearances on the overworld.
I'm an old school RPG junkie. Even though I didn't exactly pine for Dragon Quest games during the seven year period when none of them were translated, I slowly got back into them. For me, discovering the fan translations of the 16-bit games Dragon Quest V and VI was a great experience. Those two games represent the three year period in which the series slowly went from "current, maybe even trend-setting" to "old school."
As far as I'm concerned, DQ8 is much, much better than DQ7... but neither of them are for *everyone.* I wanted to like DQ7, but I gave up. I also wanted to like DQ8, and I did, but it didn't have enough customization, and I slowly got tired of it. - rodrigo74, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1This is the funniest RPG I've ever played on PS2. I was starting to get a bit annoyed with all the emo overtones and "my father hates me" dialogues from FFX (haven't purchased FFXII yet...will wait for a price drop or buy it used).
DQ8 is pure RPG fun, without the pretension of FF. "Back to be basics" was the idea I got from the game. The animations and the voice acting are also spot on, and really comical at times.
Having said that, it's an insanely long game, I've spent months playing it and I might still have 40% to go...hopefully I'll find the time to finish it until the end of the year :P
Highly recommended! - apoc06, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2ffxii makes up for ffx's shortcomings. worth a look if youre tired of the usual turn based RPG.

http://www.alnebras.com/topic/ - crisisaverted, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1does seem like the fight scenes drag on a bit. this is why I will never ever play FF games with long summon sequences again ;-)
- Kaosu, on 10/11/2007, -5/+4I find myself in the same boat. Long ago I found my self enthralled with FFVII and the countless of other jRPGs that utilized the TBS, but as I have matured along side RPGs I have found myself drifting from turned based into the more active ones. I find myself a huge fan of FFXII, the kingdom hearts series and the other active RPGs I have played. This I tried DQ8 a few months ago and quickly got bored with it before I reached the first save point. I'll go back to this game during the summer break because I know it is one of the best Turned based RPGs in the market.
P.S: Everyone check out a game called Odin Sphere. That game NEEDS publicity. - Joeshie, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I really enjoyed DQ8 when it first came out because it was so different than the kind of RPGs I'm used to playing (naming Final Fantasy). While it was really fun at first, the game really started to suffer from repetitive game play. I found myself using the exact some combination of attacks for almost every enemy. It was fun for awhile, but the shine really wore off.
I can understand why some people might like this, but I'll take a more complex game like Final Fantasy over DQ next time. I will say though, the visuals were fantastic for the game. Toriyama's art style and cell shading worked out perfectly. - themastersb, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I bought Dragon Quest VIII a couple months after it came out and played it for 5 hours then got bored with it. :/
- h3ndrix, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I was excited to play an old school rpg, but it didnt take long to remind me why they are 'old school'
- mendicant, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1I just finished it a month or two ago, but I have to say that near the end things got very reptitive and very simple. Actually, this isn't entirely true. I haven't played through the last part for the real ending, but with the amount of time that I have to play games these days, I don't think I will.
I guess the part I find odd about this review is that I disagree with it's assessment of some things. Most notably, the voice acting, which I thought was sub-par at the best of times. The accents feel forced and poorly done. Many of the voices feel out of place for the characters.
The length was an issue as well. It's great that it's 70+ hours, but truth be told, by the time I was about 60-70% through the game things just started feeling repetitive and I felt like I was finishing it for the sake of finishing it (much like Dark Cloud 2).
However, some of the things that add to the length are great. Alchemy (think Inventions in Dark Cloud 2) and the Monster Arena are pretty cool and can get really in depth if you want them to.
Near the end, the battle system was just boring. It was simple-minded and easy to kill enemies because they did the same thing over and over. Very seldomly you'd run into trouble with being knocked out or put to sleep, but this was few and far between. Some boss battles were epic and great, but the random encounters were pretty blah at best.
I dunno. I can see why people liked it, and it was a pretty dang good RPG, but it's far from the best. - kunikos, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0Yep, it's about as exciting as belt-sanding your ballsaq.
- Nysul, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1I'm awaiting some massive digging down, but DQ VIII was one of the worst games I've played in the past 4 years. First, it tried to capture that old school RPG feel, but kept the tactics dumbed down, so essentially it left you with boring combat and almost meaningless level system. Second, the NPCs were so annoying, I don't see how anyone could have not backstabbed the king 30 hours into the game and just left for their own. Third, the game's main quest was essentially a bunch of side quests, and the entire time I felt like I'd rather be doing almost anything else.
- zetamilk, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1Played it for about 40 hours and tried to enjoy it. But the dull, repetitive soundtrack and bland visuals (well, maybe not Jessica) put me to sleep.
- devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -5/+2I liked it for a while, but it was so incredibly repetitive that I had to sell it after like 30 hours of play.
- riskybeats, on 10/11/2007, -4/+190 hours later, I realized I would never get those 90 hours back.
50% later... - devindotcom, on 10/11/2007, -4/+1dude I agree with you one thousand percent. it was fun for a while but it was really repetitive.
