- konekochan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+401Ugh. So disgusting to see people taking the opportunity of a tragedy to spout off with this kind of rubbish. Shut up and mourn politely and with some respect for a day day or so. Then blather about nonsense that is to blame later. Sheesh!
- Dpack1, on 10/12/2007, -7/+382Dont be ridiculous, of course Jack Thompson and Dr. Phil are right, didnt you know that nobody had ever committed murder before the invention of the video game.
/Sarcasm - CaptMonkey, on 10/12/2007, -3/+268I miss the days before video game violence when no one was ever murdered at school... well except for the guy who shot 16 people in 1966 at the University of Texas... and the guy who killed 7 people at California State University in 1976... and that guy who blew up a grade school in 1927 and killed 44 people. Those were the days.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+184You're talking about a man who used Oprah as a crutch to launch his career into daily sob-time sappy talk shows under the ruse of actually helping people with their ***** homelife.
All he does is point out the already obvious to people and say "YA NEED TA STOP THAT".
I don't know why video games get such a heavy handed blame in things like this. Who's to say he didnt like Tarantino movies or rap albums? Where does the blame end?
I hate people like Dr. Phil and Jack Thompson because they take the focus off of the parents/person responsible in heinous crimes and pin it right back on themselves: the media. - FTLJohnson, on 10/12/2007, -9/+181I think Imus is to blame for the Virginia Tech shootings...
(c'mon, this is an equally rational accusation isn't it?) - oddmanout, on 10/12/2007, -5/+175i agree with dr. phil. Last time I played solitaire it made me want to start stabbing people.
- LogicBomB, on 10/12/2007, -9/+174I suggest shows like Dr. Phil are the reason for poor IQ's and lack of exercise. I mean, why learn or excercize when you could be sitting on your ass watching reality tv?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -10/+103Does he also blame people screwing on PORN?
What a ***** fat idiot. - antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -1/+86I blame the asian guy with the two guns.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+79Korean? More likely to kill people with zerglings than bullets.
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+75First it was TV's fault, then it was Rock n' Roll's fault, now it's video games fault. Heaven forbid it might actually be parenting, or the lack thereof, or just the fact that some people are simply screwed up period.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+69Jack Thompson totally 1-up'd Dr. Phil. He was blaming video games YESTERDAY!
- DrewBledsoe, on 10/12/2007, -2/+63What ever happened to just being crazy?
- kraemer007, on 10/12/2007, -1/+60Charles Joseph Whitman, the UT sniper, didn't have video games. Neither did the son of sam, ed gein, Hitler, or Stalin.
Do you study history at all Dr Phil? How do you explain all these murderers that pre-date video games?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_murder#Mass_murderers
Dr. Phil, seriously, STFU. - ChagrinRiddle, on 10/12/2007, -3/+58Well, after watching that Mario mod video, it becomes so obvious.
- themarq, on 10/12/2007, -6/+58When I finally get around to shooting Dr Phil and Jack Thompson I am going to on CNN and say "the bible made me do it, if only they had banned the bible I would not have shot these two idiots."
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -5/+46People have been murdering each other for thousands of years. Video games have only existed for the past 20. Movies have only existed for the past 80 or so. What did society blame it on in the past? Theatre? Or did they just say 'the murderer was just a ***** up person, that's the extent of it'?
- Magistrate, on 10/12/2007, -2/+44I'll start blaming video games when murderers start writing notes saying, "The n00bs made me do it!!11!!"
- bemenaker, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43Go here and tell Dr Phil what you think:
http://www.drphil.com/plugger/respond/?plugID=9164 - WarpFox, on 10/12/2007, -9/+49If he's so damn smart, why is he bald?
- GasPoweredGnome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+37This person was obviously mentally unstable to commit such a crime. It doesn't matter how many ***** rounds of CS he played before hand... everyone loves abusing this kind of story for their own gain.
- nickerj1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+36Every single male college student plays video games. Do you see every college guy running around a shooting people? No.
- Artifez, on 10/12/2007, -8/+42Apparently he was South Korean so theres a 95% chance he did play video games. But I'm sure his own personal case of the crazies had nothing to do with it.
They will keep spouting this no matter what reality shows them, it's an irrational conviction. - Kbennett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+32I gotta be honest, I spent a lot of time growing up glued to Super Mario Brothers, and to this day I jump up and down on every mushroom I see, kick innocent turtles and watch them skid across the ground, and punch brick walls in hopes some loose change will spill out.
- ChagrinRiddle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+33A college prof. of mine read an article aloud once during a game design course that basically said that before videogames, rock, and television were invented, people blamed society's ills on the Waltz. That's the style of dancing. He read a quote from a guy that was the Dr. Phil of the Waltz era, and the quote said (and I translate to 2007 [Imus] language) "A classy woman shouldn't be acting like a nappy-headed ho." Essentially the Waltz was too sexual and "led to promiscuity."
So hell, if the Waltz can be blamed for unmarried sex, videogames can be blamed for violence. Videogames are the Waltz of this generation. Videogames will persist as an art & entertainment form, but sooner or later something else will be invented that other people can blame society's problems on. We'll keep playing games, and using it as a scapegoat will go away. There's no way videogames will be banned or censored, and clowns like Dr. Phil and Jock Thompson should be ignored. - gharding, on 10/12/2007, -1/+30@cerialthriller:
Sweet! We get to blame immigration!! - jgo6d, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Is anyone the least bit surprised by this? When something like this happens, as Americans, it's our responsibility to grossly overreact, recklessly assign blame to advance our pet causes, and begin to assault civil liberties. It's sort of our thing.
- byronne, on 10/12/2007, -3/+32I think some people have a hard time distinguishing between Dr. Phil and reality...
- waynemr, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29I thought all of the violent crime rates in the US had been going down, according to FBI statistics, since the introduction of mass-marketed video games.
- rdquelle, on 10/12/2007, -4/+29According to Jack Thompson, it was actually a copy of "CS: Halflife" that the killer played. Please, get your facts right.
- Otto, on 10/12/2007, -2/+26Yes, but the talking heads on the TV can't let those pesky facts get in the way, now can they?
- Incom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+25People only listen to him because of Oprah and her regime.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 10/12/2007, -4/+27You know, before video games there was no gun violence what-so-ever. Thanks to companies like Rockstar, shooting people are common nowadays. Its time to step up and stop them before more violence continues!
/Sarcasm
Realistically, even with yesterdays violence, the chances of getting violently killed are far slimmer than ever. Back in the middle ages in Europe it was like 49/1000, now its about 6/1000 chance. - aw2131, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24It seems everyone is quick to blame everything and anything but the one actually responsible, the shooter.
- checksumz, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Dr. Phil is a retard, everyone knows this.
- DCGaymer, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21Personally I blame opinionated loudmouth infotainment therapists who drive more people away from therapy than they help.
- Cerialthriller, on 10/12/2007, -12/+28@tizz
no they just said it was in the name of god and it was ok. still works today as well. - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18IF you contact Dr. Phil please do so polietly and civilly, last thing anyone needs is him waving a stack of emails talkign about the threats and obscenities coming from video game supporters.
Oh and don't shy away from historical facts such as the Valentines Day Massacre, the Holocaust, WWI, WWII, The Civil War, etc. etc. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18Slam video games for being violent all you want, I'll bet you're the same people who think its ok for an 8 year old to see the Passion of the Christ
- orian76, on 10/12/2007, -2/+17Dr Phil is an "F"ing idiot, and he needs to stop using video games as a scapegoat for the fact that sometimes crazy people do crazy sh*t.
- SirNoobius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14anyone who plays CS:S knows how much glocks suck and therefore could not possibly plan on killing people with a glock
- kwago, on 10/12/2007, -6/+20There's no way, NO FRIGGIN WAY he could of been a gamer. Any true South Korean male would of never left his dorm as he'd be too busy on Battle.net working on his APM. South Korean males get dead playing games countless hours at a time. The only way a South Korean gamer would get up and that shoot someone is if someone stole some rare item from his Lineage 2 character... and I very much doubt there is a Lineage 2 guild of 60 something people at VT...
- Phyter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+14Nuh uh. He's absolutely right. I haven't seen a duck in my neighborhood since the 80's.
- gharding, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Even though I wish for the same thing, there's no way it could happen. You know the media is going to end up blaming SOMETHING entertainment-related. THE TVS HE WALKED BY AT SEARS HAD VIOLENT IMAGES ON THEM! I BLAME THEM!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15How about, it's near the end of the school year, A student is having trouble coping with low grades/stress/test anxiety/etc/etc/etc and throws a cog, buys a gun, and proceeds to blow off a little steam.
In fact, if he had played MORE video games, he would have had a safer and more controlled enviroment to ease his stress.
I don't know about any of you, but nothing soothes a stressful days work like a 3 hour frag-fest - asoap69, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I don't know why bobthegreat1224 is being dugg down, he brings up a very valid point.
FTA: "You take that and mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness, add in a dose of rage, the suggestability is just too high."
While I am in no way a fan of Dr. Phil, actually I really do despise him, he does bring up a valid point. It's not that violent video games/movies/music are the sole reason why people go on a killing spree, it __can__ be a part of the problem. Dr. Phil is saying it takes a mixture of things, mental illness, social problems, being an outcast, etc, etc.. For somebody that is not stable, violent video games can fuel these killing spree fantasies suicides. This does not mean in any way that these things should be banned, as they are not the root cause. The root cause being mental illness or society as a whole and those are the harder and more difficult issues to tackle.
It seems like these school shootings are nothing more then glorified suicides. "I'm gonna kill myself and take out as many people with me, so that others will share my suffering." - lasombragh, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13One problem is that it's easier to scapegoat away than - oh, I don't know - have real people take responsibility for their actions or lake thereof.
Maybe instead of making up reasons to crusade against an industry, people should be taking long hard looks in the mirror first. - macaddct1984, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19"Will somebody please think of the children?" - Helen Lovejoy
- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13parenthood? noooooo, parents are not supposed to raise their kids, that's the job of TV and videogames
- bobthegreat1224, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12"mix it with a psychopath, a sociopath, or someone suffering from mental illness"
He's not talking about your average 12 year old boy the way Thompson is. Just a point of note. -
