- xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+31Nice time to get a 360.
1) I don't care about Guitar Hero II that much, but it's heading to the 360: http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/27/its-official-guitar-hero-ii-heading-to-xbox-360/
2) Microsoft pulled a Nintendo on us and got Doom out. Today.
3) Stunned us all with two seperate Halo titles, one of them Halo Wars. I am concerned about milking the franchise, though. Official Halo Wars trailer here: http://www.halowars.com/trailer.html
4) Banjo Kazooie: http://www.clubskill.com/Game_News/4410/Banjo%20Kazooie%203%20-%20First%20screencaps
5) Splinter Cell 5 (aka, Double Agent) to be exclusive to PC and 360: http://www.clubskill.com/Game_News/4405/X06%20-%20Splinter%20Cell%205%20to%20appear%20on%20360%20and%20PC%20only
6) Along with HD-DVD external drive pricing (a lower than expected price of $200), a free Universal Media remote and a HD DVD of Peter Jackson's King Kong will come free for a limited time: http://hhttp//www.clubskill.com/Game_News/4409/X06%20-%20HD%20DVD%20Drive%20package%20priced
They started off on the right foot. Waiting for updates on Forza Motorsport 2 and Ninja Gaiden 2. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+34Dude this is why Xbox 360 rocks right here...
- Reno582, on 10/12/2007, -0/+24Get your ass to Mars!!!!
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+21heard you the first TWO times, ilyag
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Dude co-op is the ***** on that game.
- Gryfft, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Which is why 360 has customizable soundtracks.
- theojanke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15How am I supposed to enter "iddqd" and "idkfa" without a keyboard?!
- ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13heard you the first time ilyag
- dukrous, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15You two comedians should ask yourself why you two don't have careers :P
(i'm so getting dugg down for this one...) - mobilehavoc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Having purchased it and played the first few levels of first chapter - this is a great port. Controls are responsive, faithful reproduction of graphics, 5.1 surround sound? (seems like it on my system). Online play has potential, a little laggy right now probably because of the mass amounts of the world's 360 population hitting the servers but can see it being fun.
All in all, not bad for $10. FYI..I played the original on a 486 when it first came out so I've played it plenty of times before.
Oh...and the shotgun rules. - chandler55, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10both are available for offline split screen and live online.
im not sure if you can play split screen online I havent tried yet - chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9OMG its only 800 points. quit your whining. the original doom was waaaaaaay more than that.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9NO
the shareware version with the first chapter was free. doom on 360 has all 4 chapters, and decent reliable online play. - ggriffit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12IT'S TRUE!!! Get online!
- godfa7h3r, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11They threw a new soundtrack on it which, IMHO, gets real annoying real fast.
- dukrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8Man, I was just sitting around pondering gettin a 360 for my birthday in Nov. Now I have a great reason to get me a few friends into a 360. The Live multiplayer support for Doom alone is fricken awesome.
- vagarach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7There is something to be said for having more of your favourite games in one place, able to be played on a TV...so at least there is some utility to this port.
- truspector, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9any word on coop, or deathmatch only via live?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8No but it looks a little more clearer.
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Not really updated but it looks fine on my 32" LCD HDTV.
Actually, all Arcade games look fine (Frogger, Galaga, etc) on large, widescreen, HD TVs. - ardellin, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8idspispopd?
- dukrous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I think the Live multiplayer support is worth the cost. Doom is still fun for a 12 year old game, and deathmatch is still great fun.
- chedabob, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5yeah, when i saw the doom announcement on joystiq, i fired up my 360, and i was grinnin like a fool in about 2 minutes flat.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The 360 version has multiplayer, and though the analog stick is clunky I downloaded and played the game for a good hour last night. Its as fun aas I remember Doom being, I think it will be one of the few Live Arcade games I actually finish
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Actually, Double Agent is going to be on almost every console. It's the one after that which is going to be exclusive to MS. I think it's going to be called SC: Conviction.
- thecray, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3That's not the next Ninja Gaiden, it's a remake of the Ninja Gaiden Black, with some bonus things thrown in for good measure.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3and the DS, and the PSP, and the PC and the snes and the....
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@ilyag
jesus, take a hint! - sLydE, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If anyone is interested, there are a few extremely active original Doom/Heretic/Hexen communities out there:
http://www.newdoom.com
http://www.doomworld.com
There are also a great many sourceports for every platform thinkable available for free. These add features such as opengl acceleration, high res textures, 3d models, mouse look, jumping, 3d slopes, room over room, etc. etc. Here is a comprehensive list of these ports, seperated by platform, with links to find the communities and downloads, as well as a brief description of the ports' features:
http://www.doomworld.com/classicdoom/ports/
I personally suggest anyone who has a decent pc check out the Doomsday Engine:
http://www.doomsdayhq.com - john2kx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7$10 for a 15+ year-old game? I mean, it _is_ doom and all, but damn.. it's not like it isn't freely available anywhere now..
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually, no. Splinter Cell Double Agent is not coming to the PS3.
- Psygnosis, on 10/12/2007, -6/+7$10 for a 13 year old game that I currently have 2 versions of on PC and one more that came with Doom 3 on the xbox? As much as I love the game I think I'll pass on this. It's not even much of a trial, they only let you play the first level and you can finish that in under 15 seconds.
- JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed! I was blown away by the 800 MP cost.... Street Fighter II HF... I can see that for 800 (mainly cause I bought it). But Doom? Comon.... they should be practically giving these titles away to gather up more market share!
- 9mmCensor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1game is sweet.
- piper999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait till you hear the sound of the doors sliding open and the nostalgia will hit you good and hard...
- Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1its so fun, I got it and it was funnnn
- foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Did they upgrade the graphics? Atleast to not look so ugly on a humongous screen?
- UrlorJkron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1speed runs
- thevaw, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2As E. Gauger says in the page comments, the shot comes from a modified doom where each monster is a unix process and killing them also kills that process. This very shot came from http://www.cs.unm.edu/~dlchao/flake/doom/
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I remember playing it on the Atari Jaguar...co-op mode was cool
- quickcomment, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0For some reason, your #6 link opens to a totally unrelated political PDF.
- bouche, on 10/12/2007, -6/+6Is nostalgia worth 10 bucks? Actually, can Doom even evoke a nostalgic feeling so soon? I looked at the vid, and it made me feel a tiny bit of nostalgia, but I doubt I'd play it longer than 10 minutes.
- MalDON, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I'm going to go download it right now.
- wilsonics, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Gotta love it. They'll get you to pay for that game that we've all played a thousand times over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again. Go m$ft! Hey it's a fun game, but It's DOOM! *****, I'd probably get sick of it in like 2min.
- gamerzworld, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5800 points??? Meh, wayyyy tooo much. I'll stick to the computer version.
- millixaw, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1Unfortunately, it seems like the next Ninja Gaiden is headed to PS3. As per the Tokyo Game Show 2006...
- Stratacaster, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3That's a very good point, why the hell does Dane Cook have a career?
- hvatsun, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3hey, nostalgia is one of the jucier markets out there. Why do you think Dane Cook has a career?
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2ZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
Doom was free to download the first time around! Now it costs $10?
(Doom was shareware, Doom II cost money up front.) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -20/+10I'm going to go out on a limb here and say:
Lame.
I love Doom. Infact, I've probably played thousands of hours of Doom, Doom II, Final Doom and WADs of mods. But Doom on the Xbox 360 doesn't interest me the slightest bit or make me want to spend my points.
Reason 1:
No Keyboard and Mouse.
Yeah yeah I know, the PC gamers always complain about this. But honestly I can't see myself playing Doom with the Xbox 360 Gamepad. If you're going to try to charge me $10 for 1994 Nostalgia you better let me use the control scheme I'm used to.
Reason 2:
Doom has long since gone from "Retro Classic" to just "Old".
The source for this was released years ago. We've had BOOM, ZDoom, Doom Legacy, Doomsday. We've had the death, the rebirth, the death, the rebirth of Doom infinite times over. I never played it but if I recall right, someone's even ported Doom 1 into the Doom 3 engine.
Reason 3:
Closed Model of Xbox 360
The great thing about the release of the source on this project was it spawned tons of awesome Doom Mods - something the Xbox 360 architecture and closed model specifically do not encourage.
Classic WAD Authors - here's your chance to approach Microsoft and make a few bucks off your old designs. I can only guess that MS will attempt to feed us "map packs" for 200 points with bad or unoriginal designs. The WAD community created THOUSANDS of amazing maps, some of which completely top the ID Content.
This reeks of nothing more then a cheap grab for cash without innovation. Xbox Live Multiplayer? Come on guys, we were doing that over 14.4 (or less) modems in 1994. Let Doom die the peaceful death it deserves and fade into gaming legend. -
