- whiteguysamurai, on 10/12/2007, -2/+27Halo 2 was not what they wanted it to be.
They never "hated" it, they just wanted more out of it. - dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12Yeah, that's a great reason to hate something. *rolls eyes*
You're the kinda guy that "hates" a great book he read 5 years ago, because all the sudden it becomes popular, and therefore removes your smug elite appreciative status. - oldtimegamer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10How many times is this going to be on digg.
- krakkinem, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Halo 2 was not what I wanted it to be, either. I see it as being like The Matrix Reloaded: good, but ultimately disappointing and incomplete as a sequel.
However, if Halo 3 turns out to be like Matrix Revolutions... that will be bad. I have faith in Bungie, though, and I'm sure they can correct the mistakes they made in the last game. - Nickatnite101, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Saying halo 2 is "overrated" is an understatment.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6"No. If they had, they should have said it when it was released"
And not make $125M within 24 hours? Of course they aren't going to say it's bad in their opinion or not up to par of the first Halo right away cause if the developers don't like it why would the consumer? - t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I played my fair share of PC FPS's before Halo. I was mostly a console gamer, but I played a little Doom, a little Tribes, and lots of Half-Life and Half-Life Deathmatch. I also played, of course, Goldeneye and Perfect Dark. Since them I've played Quake 3, Unreal Tournament 1, 2003 and 2004, Serious Sam, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Call of Duty 1 and 2, Half-Life 2, Counter-Strike 1 and Source, Day of Defeat, Doom 3, Medal of Honor: allied assault, Battlefield 1942, No One Lives Forever, Raindow Six Three, Brothers in Arms, FEAR, Marathon, Halo 2, Escape from Buther Bay, the FPSRPG's Deus Ex 1+2 and System Shock 2, and...
Well, you get the picture. Anyway, my point is, I've played my share of FPS's, and the original Halo is my favorite out of all of them. Believe it or not, it's possible to like Halo without being ignorant of PC FPS's. And, for the record, I do prefer a keyboard and mouse to dual thumbsticks.
So what do I like about Halo? A lot of things. The combat just feels right, and is rewarding and fun. It has a good speed, not overly plodding, like the older Rainbow 6 games, and not insanely fast, like Tribes or Unreal 2004. The weapons are all powerful, satisfying and reasonably well-balanced, and they don't feel gimmicky or over-the-top. The vehicles are fun to drive, and are integrated really well into the single-player campaign and multiplayer game.
The A.I. is excellent, probably the best ever in the genre at that point. The story is interesting and is told well throughout the game, and the graphics are beautiful, easily the best in any shooter at that point.
Levels like Halo, The Silent Cartographer and Assault on the Control Room have huge, vast, beautiful, open areas, something that I've never seen equaled in a shooter, and a great change of pace from something like Quake or Doom. And the game really ends on a high note with the race out of the collapsing Pillar of Autumn, infinitely more memorable that something like Halo 2 or Half-Life's lame boss fights, or Call of Duty 1 and 2's anti-climaxes.
And as for your accusation of it being a ripoff of PC first person shooters; well, that's just ridiculous. First, first-person shooters as a genre are very derivative of each other; if you're going to call Halo derivative, you've got to call every other FPS with the possible exception of Wolfenstein 3D derivative as well. Second, Halo really was original in some ways; not revolutionary, but definately evoltionary. Look at Halo's regenerating shield system, which has been aped in everything form Call of Duty 2 to Gears of War to Rainbow 6: Vegas. Or it's emphasis on powerful, fun-to-drive vehicles, which has certainly influenced games like Call of Duty, Resistance, and Half-Life 2. Or it's 2-weapon system, which has become the standard for relatively realistic first-person shooters.
Geez, that was really long. - ilselu1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Special Ed. DVD H2 even said that they had hoped for more, and that when the time came to ship that they weren't finished... So, no, Bungie doesn't hate Halo, they were just a bit disappointed when it came down to it.
- t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hang 'em High was always my favorite Deathmatch map in Halo: Combat Evolved. They said that they ported it to Halo 2, but it just didn't work very well; whoever had the bases was invincible, the middle was an absolute deathtrap, and the only thing accurate enough to attack one base from the other was the sniper rifle. People would just camp in both bases, ducking behind cover whenever they took damage, and anyone who moved in the center would get destroyed. I bet it would have worked okay for free-for-all deathmatch regardless, but it sounds like the map was pretty miserable for everything else.

Halo > halo2
Halo 3 hasn't even been released. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"bungie" is not one person, so i'm sure not everyone who worked on the game is dissapointed
- Salgat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3All they are admitting is that they feel it wasn't up to its potential.
- GawtMilk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It sold more then 8 million copies worldwide. The only way they could hate it is if they were somehow trying to sell all their material possession and give away all their money and this was getting in their way.
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hate isn't the right word. They just wanted to do more with the game.
- KlayBorg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Here (about half way down) bungie reply's to this:
http://www.bungie.net/News/TopStory.aspx?cid=9474 - JoeCool1986, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3something was just perfect about the multiplayer in halo 1. I don't know what it was, but it was definitely there. Halo 2 didn't have that perfection to me and lost the sparkle the original had. I'm hoping Halo 3 will bring the serious around and be just as awesome (if not more awesome) than the first.
- Phr3aker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2h2 multiplayer blows asssssssss...h1 multiplayer owns allllllllllll
- HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2They don't hate it. They just wanted to get more and more publicity.
- UCFMark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"Disappointed" is different from "hate." Sure, many at Bungie have expressed disappointment with Halo 2- not because it was a bad game, but because it could have been much better in their opinion.
Also, does anyone not miss Hang 'em High? That was a great map. - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5because, IMO, console games weren't as refined as PC games before halo. but, just my opinion, feel free to digg down.
- fallenone05, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OK, they were not dissapointent with Halo 2, that title generated a lot of money, no disappointment there. As a company, they have no reason oto be dissapointed because of the amount of revenue that it generated, regardless of the quality of the product; if people were willing to buy it, that's all that matters.
Also, it's very convinient for them to bring to light the "dissapointment" thing when Halo 3's is close to shipping; just so people expect that they finally got it right with the 3rd one. - dustysquareback, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Bullseye, th3ninja. You said it, dead on.
About once a month I STILL fire up Halo1 to play through Assualt on the Control Room. And the beach landing on Silent Cartographer is better than any Normandy recreation I've ever played. - SoxFanNH, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1How people hate the 2nd is beyond me... Then again I've played 2750 Halo 2 matches online ;)
- onTheJDAR, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@DurkaMcDurk
Pistol-whore! - shlemielo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2you can't call someone a pistol-whore if everyone starts with a pistol, IMO. rocket-whore, sure, but pistols are fair
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Just wish they had been more upfront earlier, instead of this "Halo 2 wasn't great, but Halo THREE, COMING SOON, will be awesome". Just smacks of marketing *****.
- rolandpoulter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I've almost always felt the Halo, was a much better game in all aspects, then Halo 2. Halo 2 did add some cool stuff like, dual wielding but for the most part wasn't as good.
- bj00rn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1nevermind
- w33tz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The 1up site doesn't work for me atm :( , I wonder if its anything to do with the digg effect.
I have never played halo 2 as I thought halo was over hyped and didn't really enjoy halo. - vikinghammer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I don't doubt many of the Bungie developers didn't like Halo 2. I used to play Halo (a lot), and so did practically everyone I knew. A small group of my friends and I even traveled around and played in tournaments and did pretty well. (We usually placed behind the teams that were getting paid to play, and nobody else, so we felt pretty good about it.)
Then Halo 2 came out, and we were all really excited. We picked up the game, and were baffled that they'd release something like this. The levels were all way too big unless you're playing with 12+ people, the controls seemed a bit mushier than the original, and the guns were no good. Within weeks, everyone who was good at Halo 1 had decided that Halo 2 was a bust, and refused to even play it. On the other hand, everyone who hadn't been good at Halo 1 loved Halo 2 because they were doing better. The strategy of removing the skill necessity by destroying the game's balance may have sold a lot of copies and made the lesser players feel better about the fact that they have a 1/10 chance of spawning next to the sword, but it alienated every single good Halo player I know. - n00bst3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Yea, I don't understand how something that has been done hundreds of times before on PC can be so worshiped on a console.
- guitarh3ro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Regarding Hang Em High:
It was only good with Snipers. - jake8689, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1something was off with the muti in halo2 it wasent bad it just felt off
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As the boys at Penny Arcade put it you can't blame them, instead of making the game better they were too busy playing beta versions of it.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2005/20050318l.jpg - drummer1189, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it works for me
- shlemielo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I did the same thing with my friends in college. We went to some national tournaments for Halo 1, but never really took it to the professional level. We reserved our dorm lounge for an all-nighter the night of Halo 2's release, and I remember just feeling really *confused* the whole night. Halo 2 is different in so many ways, and I just find the whole experience to be a lot less rewarding than the first game.
- ragonamuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1there is only 1 place for first person shooters, that is the computer. This may change on the Wii though...
- ragonamuffin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Marathon all the way!
- superjenn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Krymore, the entry at Bungie to which you refer simply announces and links back to this very same article, so...
- DiggityDugged, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1this has been the most drawn out piece of news ive ever seen on digg. first some digger found the news, then some site reported it and no one else did, then one big site editor read it on dig and put it on their site, then no one else cared, then someone found it on digg with halo 3 in the title and put it up on their site, 1up picked it up, and a week or two later here we are. the end
- eN1X, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I hate Halo 2 and that's all that really matters...
Halo 1 was so awesome..then what the hell happened? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The thousands of 9 year olds who play this game are emo because it's "disappointing".
No, it just sucks. - meatmcguffin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Huh....no comments saying that Edge is the greatest gaming magazine in the world, only equalled by Famitsu?
Well in that case, Edge is the greatest gaming magazine in the world, only equalled by Famitsu. - nbcivic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0they're just saying this to lead you to believe that halo 3 will be sooooooooo much better.
- bj00rn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Oops, I buried it thinking it was a dupe from 1-2 weeks ago. I'm an idiot, I'm sorry :(
- AXNeXus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Another important problem I heard of with Hang Em' High was that part of the original feel the map gave which makes it so liked came from the fall damage element. There were always those precarious moments on the walkways above where you didn't want to fall off because of the damage you'd take. When they removed fall damage, which I think was one of the cooler changes in Halo 2, the map didn't feel quite the same though. For some random plugs: Battle Rifle>Pistol; funner isn't a word; worst first-person shooters don't usually have record first day sales and maintain top ranking among Live titles, so that has to be a fluke; it's a fact that Bungie was rushed with Halo 2 so it isn't reflective of their max quality, and that said it (Halo 2) wasn't bad, you just have to have the patch and do some rule edits; finally, I think people forget all the good things they changed: no fall damage, getting rid of the health bar, boarding, multiplayer model customization, and an actual diversity among the maps all were good changes. My point being, what few things people are dissatisfied with, and they are few in number when you actually think about it, are generally the result of Bungie not having enough time to really smooth it out. They say they are taking all the time they need to make Halo 3 the best, and I'll take their word. They are making it really obvious their first concern is addressing what people disliked before, and that's enough to alleviate my concerns. People would do well to be patient.
- DurkaMcDurk, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3"What's with everyone and Hang 'Em High?"
It was the best map in Halo1. Let me guess.. you were a big fan of blood gulch and sidewinder... - DansFloyd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Halo 2 = Worst First Person Shooter EVER! Doom was funner then Halo 2...
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I know I do...
