- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Old news. Everybody knows Sony hates cripples.
- Flynn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Digg comments, you never find a more wretched hive of scum, villainy, misspelling and complete lack of empathy.
- allthewhile, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5They don't have to, but we as consumers SHOULD encourage them to do so. I can't imagine the solace that gaming would bring me if I were paralyzed.
- Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Another case of people not putting themselves in other people's situations. I think Sony sould accomodate the man. Are any of you disabled. Do you know what it's like? I doubt it. Fixing it isn't exactly going to bankrupt them. Compassion seems to be a rare thing on the internet. How dare you pass judgement on someone less fortunate.
- afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Ok, wow, I really don't know what to say here.
Look at this objectively people. You have a person, who is isolated from the rest of the world because of a disability. He then finds a way to socialize in Star Wars Galaxies, a game for which in the last 2 and a half years, he was able to play, build relationships, and have fun. In the process, he probably invested a great amount of time and money (if he's been playing since release...we're talking $500). Through no fault of his own, the way the game is played is changed, and he can't play anymore.
Yes, Sony has the right to change their game, there are plenty of disclaimers when you buy MMOs that the experience may change. But everyone here isn't just leaving it at that. This guy did not buy Half-Life 2 or F.E.A.R. and then start bitching that he couldn't play it. He was perfectly capable of playing the game for 2 and a half years! Think about it people! He has every right to be angry. Not to mention that it isn't just a game once you develop friendships in it. I just can't believe the absolute stupidity exhibited in some of the comments here. While I have a huge dislike for Sony at this point in time, I'm not blaming them for this. But this sucks--big time. Try looking at the world through someone else's eyes for a second, you might learn something. - multifaceted, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"should have thought of that before he made the decision to be disabled"
*takes a deep breath*
You annoying worthless waste of space! No one decides to be disabled.
People like you just make me want to give up on humanity and find the BORG sign-up sheet. - Kanani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Now, I feel bad for the guy, but he has to understand three things:
1. SOE is not discriminating him/screwing him over intentionally;
2. SOE does have a duty to accommodate a tiny minority of its players; and
3. A suit on the grounds that SOE discriminated against the disabled when it changed the game play of SWG, would have no basis, and would be dismissed on its face.
SOE deserves a bad rap, however, for this scenario its totally uncalled for.
On a separate note,
I feel sorry for DC Fans, I heard SOE bought the right to develop a MMO based on DC characters ! ouch!! *sends cookies* - PrezKennedy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"The Internets is serius business!
Some people, like myself, choose to go to an extreme to make a point, it's nothing personal."
Neither is the -3 I just gave you. Just the Internets at work friend, nothing personal. - NickDupree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3This is not the needs of the few vs. the wants of the masses; I can't stress this enough: I don't want to change other people's keymap, I don't want "one size fits all" and I don't want to "ruin it for everyone else" like I was flamed mercilessly for on slashdot.org. I just want previous customization back.
I'm sorry you diddn't read the article, you all are more disabled in reading comprehension than me.
Nick

- Stjerne, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Wow...all I can say is wow to the IQ level of some of these posts. But then again I shouldn't be surprised since your anonymity allows you to be an ass.
OK that's not all I'm going to say, can't resist. For those that are bitching about the 'special treatment' people with disabilities get in your eyes; 1) it's the law so get over it and 2)what?...there is some reason YOU can't walk that extra 30 ft from your car that you have to hold a grudge against people that it takes 10 times as long just to get out of that car?!?!? You lazy SOB's.
If any of you MENSA candidates would have taken 2 minutes to maybe do a search on the web and found out something about Nick, you probably would not have posted at all. I noticed most stopped once he got on here. What, afraid he is going to beat you to death with your own ignorant words? Which he will.
SWG - From my point of view the issue is not whether a game should be handicapped accessible from the beginning, that is a dev decision when they develop a game. The point is that it was and is no longer. The semi-coherent posters have all said the other stuff I feel.
Oh and by the way nyrol not capitalizing is a typo...but I understand, easier to attack someone for a typo than pressing the shift key yourself...idiot. - HighDecibel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Well I'm pissed at sony for so many reasons, and I figure why let this get past my list of things to be angry about. I myself am physically disabled, and it sucks when you can't go places, cos theres a step. It's when theres just one single step, and you're thinking, why did they bother, for just one step? The thing about it is, corporations think to make things disabled friendly costs lots of money. I've seen cases where banks have put big expensive lifts, for literally a set of 6 steps, when a single ramp, cheap to make would do. Its cheaper, and doesn't make the person the center of attention.
Now I've noticed some rather bitchy comments with this. Things such as get over it, play another game, touch crap. Then someone drew on the fact that only being able to use two fingers, must mean the guy is retarded...retardation is a mental condition. Whoa a writer and disabled activist, pretty good for a mentally retarded person. Then someone said "That's what life with a disability is, finding ways around obstacles". The mere fact is theres no way you can go up steps in a standard wheelchair. You can find a way around it. You can not go into a building, you can not go clubs, have a social life, or anything. Thats a way around an obstacle. However complaining and make the source of grief solve a problem that is their legal duty to is what should happen. Whats funny is if it doesn't affect someone, they don't give a *****.
I say screw sony and all the ignorant posts here.
An MMORPG with no customisable movement keys?! - BanditJing, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What's the harm in making some of the keys bindable? Last I checked, like EVERY game does that.
I'm not disabled but I would like the ability to change what my keys do. Disabled people have no choice sometimes. I have a friend who quit Galaxies because of this enhancement. - Karyyk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, it's a shame the consensus is that the game BLOWS more than it ever did due to these, ahem, ENHANCEMENTS.
They took a game with depth and made it shallow and ultimately no fun (cut the classes in half) for those who had been devoted to the game from its start, all in the name of accessibility. Now it's a simple hack and slash game, with no challenge (at least as far as becoming a Jedi, now anyone can). Thing is, most people interested in this kind of gameplay 1) have superior outlets (Guild Wars) and won't stop playing that anytime soon, and 2) will quickly get bored of SWG.
Thanks Sony, you've done it again...SWG will now die a premature death. - hitman619, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was a loyal fan of SWG for over 2 yrs. Day-1 player, post-CU jedi, Master Armorsmith and I have since cancelled my account because the NGE is not fun and I TRULY feel SOE has ruined a what was a very fun game by trying to appeal to the n00b (ie. non-mmo) fan base. I seen Julio Torres (lead producer for SWG) on AOTS (Attack of the Show on G4) and I was pretty disgusted. I mean the he basically said, "yeah we don't care about the players who quit, they'll be back - they always come back". and that kinda pissed me off. I feel for this guy who can't play - but I honestly feel SOE doesn't care considering what they've already done to ruin the game.

Kickback Bade (BRIA) - daonlyfreez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3He should try AutoHotkey
http://www.autohotkey.com - lamprey187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4To whomever thinks that companies should not accommodate people with disabilities, I would not wish a disability upon you, merely I would suggest I hope you never become disabled and then would have to reap what you sow. I suppose the same people that are griping about this guy, would also like to see handicap access ramps removed from public buildings. Seriously, the people on Digg are making me sick on whole new level at this point. These comments are at an all time low. You people are truly lower than filth. As for the decent folks with a shred of compassion, please disregard this comment.
- fallingstars, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3"Newsflash: Double amputees shut out of track and field competitions." -hammerattack
Actually, there are world-record holders that are lower-limb amputees, for the simple reason that they're not constrained by feet. If your legs were made of carbon-fiber, I bet you'd be a world-class runner too.
The fact is: the game was accessible before, now it's not. The guy has a valid gripe against the developers (though I doubt it was intentional on their part), and I hope they hear it and at least build in a way to customize your controls. - Sixcolors, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Ditch SWG and play a good game like WoW.
"Saw a lady on TV, she was born without arms. That's sad, but then they said, "Lola does not know the meaning of the word 'can't'." That, to me, is even worse in a way. Not only is she missing arms, but she doesn't understand simple contractions. It's easy, Lola - you just take two words, put them together, take out the middle letters, put in a comma, and you raise it up!
-Mitch Hedberg"
LMAO. This is why I loved that guy. - sniper668, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The developers arn't [sic] going to change a game that millions play just so one or two cripples can play with 2 fingers."
You're absolutely right. The developers changed it so they can't. - ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Noone can seriously hate sony for changing a game so it can't be played by people with only two fingers. Circumstances such as that simply aren't something that a company (particuarly a videogames company) can think about.
I have every sympathy for those affected, but come on, there are a lot of things that Sony does that are much more worthy of our hatred. - ThisGeek, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Lets have a bit more sensitivity please.
Sony cannot degrade the quality of their games in order to accomodate a tiny minority of it's players, that is simply not possible.
Having said that, there's no need to be horrible. For all you guys know you could have really upset someone, and I know that you are sick of the PC parade ruining things in the name of encompassing minorities, but come on, no one likes a jack ass. - getabused, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2can we PLEASE stop digging storys about SWG, yes its ruined and SOE did it... big whoop, move on with your life
- dralter, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2SWG will be updated with mouse only play:
"Our new fast-action combat control scheme inadvertently presented a hardship for some without the use of both hands; for this reason we are introducing mouse-only play which allows all movements and abilities to be controlled through the mouse exclusively. This is live in the game right now and can be accessed through the options menu.
How to enable Mouse-Only Play:
1. Open your Options menu (press "O").
2. Click the button that says, "Keymap".
3. On the bottom half of the Keymap window, you will see a list of options.
4. Check the boxes that say:
"Middle mouse drives movement" and
"Scroll through default actions with mouse."
5. Click the button that says, "Apply" and then "Ok".
Now your mouse-only play feature will be enabled!
Here's how it works:
1. Left click is still used to fire your weapon.
2. Right click is still used to trigger your specials.
3. The middle mouse wheel will scroll through the abilities on your toolbar.
4. Holding down the middle mouse button will move you in the direction that you are facing.
5. You can use the "+" and "-" keys on your keyboard to control your camera zoom.

Community Relations Manager" - Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2So by your logic, we shouldn't have ramps for people in wheelchairs and they should just live with it. We shouldn't accomodate people of lesser means at all?
- sparkmonkeyz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1i agree with the guy who says that we should just stop buying sony products, there like the opposite of apple, they take a good idea and f**** it up
- steamynachos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It would be cool to develop some device that lets you control games with brainwaves or something
- salmonmoose, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Just STOP buying SONY products Does this game connect to the Internet and call home also?"
Well, it's a MMO, so one would hope so, or it would be rather dull :) - takdiego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I mean come on... you really can't blame big bad SOE, I used to be a GM there...the effort really is to better the game for all, we all know SWG has had it's fair share of issues, but my character is still around, and it's still around..
I dunno..I'm bias I suppose. - Lsvcake, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1uhh i'm not reading over 88 comments but uhh... you can rebind keys in swg, didnt wired figure that one out ?
- b04155, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It would be cool to develop some device that lets you control games with brainwaves or something"
I'm sure Nintendo would come up with it first, and the response would be: 'aw man, now i gottas THINK while i play. they be makin' things so damn hard yo. - Ruckgesicht, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Biggest piece of ***** in the world... That man is now saving $15 a month. I don't see the problem here.
- Chaos12, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1SWG used to be so damn good, its a 100% completely different game now :0(
- Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1So that's why they shouldn't be allowed to do anything at all...as you said?
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1steamy,
there is, dunno how expensive that device is or how well they can interface it with out commands or programs/games. And this was back before 2000. - moiety, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You mean people still play that game?
- Blue_Eon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Ever heard of an ccident? People can get their fingers cut off. You don't have to only be retarded to only have two fingers.
- glitchbit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1second of all how hard is it to get a custom made keyboard with a trackball built in? with a left and right click button? Shoot if I knew the guy I could mod a keyboard for him. Not that hard to figure out.
- mstar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Come on. This makes it sound like Lucas Arts said "We hate disabled people lets mess with them"... They changed the way the game was played - thats all... It was probably a lucky coincidence that the original setup allowed Nick to play in the first place.
I think someone (the poster) is just angry for changes in general to the game. - abeerge30, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When first reading this, I thought a sabatour shut down the servers by disabling the Fans.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hope all the people here that are being jerks get their arms cut off tomorrow. No more WoW for you then, you ***** self-centered geek jackasses!
I know they don't HAVE to change the game for him, but come on, at least be respectful. - jwa131, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen
- Massif, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm looking forward to the new gameplay. I gave up on SWG but maybe this will bring me back.
- Elxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Exactly. I think there's definitely a way for him to be able to still play without needing the game to be changed. Somebody could figure it out.
- comrademikhail, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"Sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen"
A lawsuit is completely unnecessary. Game devs can't think of everything. I highly doubt they sat there and planned this out to screw and disabled players out of the deal, but I also highly doubt they even thought about "Will someone with only the ability to use 2 fingers will be able to play this game?". I feel bad for him and all, but it's not like they intentionally tried to screw him. - keepitreal05, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Just STOP buying SONY products Does this game connect to the Internet and call home also?
- capajc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I'll bet Sony's shareholders applaud anything SOE does to try to increase their customer base. If the enhancements gain them more people than they lose, then I can't fault them. They're a business.
- mynameisob3l, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1uhh... yeah. and world of warcraft is not this way?
- subject117, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This is ridiculous. There are tons of games that disabled players can't play. They make up a very small percentage of gamers. The old adage comes into play: "You can please some people some of the time, but you can't please all people all of the time."
- etruscan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well I tend to agree with ThisGeek - Sony does a lot of things that are worthy of my anger and mistrust, but I can't seriously be upset with them for changing a game and making it less accessible to those with disabilities. I'm sure they didn't do this on purpose.
Sadly, the reality is that video game manufacturer's cannot be expected to design their games for every conceivable configuration of human being (be they blind, deaf, have a lack of mobility, lack of manual dexterity, etc). They would be doing themselves a favour by doing what they can to accomodate them, but that's all. -
