- cplater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'd love to see this, but any real DVR fuctionality is going to take a much larger hard drive. My HD DVR from DirecTV has a 250GB hard drive, and only records about 20 hours of HD content.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0You knew this was coming, and I'm sure MS probably thought of this in the development stages of the XBox306. What would be better? "Sign up for DirecTV for 2 years and receive an Xbox 360 free". That's next, imo.
- MrsApril, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0or
BUY A UPGRADED 200GIG HARD DRIVE SO YOU CAN RECORD HD CONTENT!@ - warcry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That sounds great, but would you have to have direct tv to access the content?
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0cool
- aznboi04k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0we're definitely going to need a BIGGER hd if they want hdtv quality shows. i have a 160gb hd dedicated to recording hd and it's not enough!
- johnhummel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0An interesting idea, but is there a slot on the Xbox 360 for a cablecard? Or will this be a new add on?
- mwdqk3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0By not much money, I definately mean included in my xbox live subscription.
- SirPoonga, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I don't think this would make the 360 a DVR. Who would want a feature that will use up a good chunk of resources during gameplay? It sounds more like a blade to control a DirectTV box, kinda like how the 360 can control an MCE box.
For DirecTV users this is probably a cool thing. - mwdqk3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This would be seriously cool, assuming it doesn't cost a much money.
- galfridus73, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Interesting stuff. I am on the fence about the Xbox 360 at this point, but having HD DirecTV usability would be big. Very big. I am a DirecTiVo user right now, and that kind of ability could convince me to purchase a 360 around the end of the year.
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0According to my friend who works in the industry.........MS is planning to release a product that includes XBOX Live POINTS and a big Hard Drive in one bundle....
Points obviously for purchasing HD movies/shows. And the HDD for you know what...
SWEET! - Akram, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This will probably be announced along with a slew of new hard drives, 40gb, 80gb, 120gb and 200gb.
Probably with more products like the camera, the missing battery pack charger and new xbox live features.
who can say E3? - alecks, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Anyone know if there is/will be a way to transfer game saves and other content from one xbox hd to another once upgrades are available.. i'd hate to lose all my downloaded arcade games and such if I upgrade my hd.
- Shizlak, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0um.. I assume they mean Directv in branding only. The xbox360 cannot decode the Directv signal, and i DTV is so paranoid about their content being stolen, (no eithernet on DirecTivos cause people might hack the boxes, and other retarded anti connectivity decisions) plus there's no where to shove a dtv ID card. So at most it can be an iTunes style "taste" of directv, with like 10 shows available for download, but it will never have the hardware to replace a dtv box.
- JamesGHill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0If its just downloading content off the Internet, good.
If its some sort of connectivity between by DirecTV HD-Tivo and my 360, I'll never leave the house.
James Hill - Soccrmastr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0prolyl gonna have mad $$ to pay for it though eh?
- matt0817, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i hope they "piggyback" the hard drives so i don't loose all my live arcade games...
and by loose i mean have to download again... that was a PITA - kaz928, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I thought it was pretty obvious from the article that this isn't intended to turn you Xbox 360 into a DVR, but rather allow you to stream content from your DirecTV DVR, and DirecTivo users(myself included) don't count on having that functunality, i'm sure that will be reserved for DirecTV's DVR (their fairly new one, that does not have the tivo name attached)
- SwimTorrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't care to get DirecTV again, but if it's an iTunes-like function that would be badass.
- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I hope this goes where I think its going. Im not mad at MS for offering this either. I have the premium bundle with the hdd and i can see some people getting pissy but heres the deal. Nobody is forcing you to get a bigger HDD, nobody would force you to download HD content. Its no different then a PC, if you wanna do HD your gonna need a bigger drive. Hopefully these bigger drives are a better value, meaning they wont be $100 for every 20 gigs.
- SwimTorrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if it's not an iTunes model, what would be the point of just running content from the DirecTV box to the 360?
- SwimTorrent, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What if it's just streaming? Like pay-per-view HD and OnDemand does. That might lower the necessity for a big HDD.
- digitarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Who wants to bet that whatever they come up with, it'll involve requiring a Media Center Edition PC?
I dunno. I'll believe this when I see it, just because there are so many problems involved. Bandwidth (HD == BIG), DRM, the fact that MS is doing it... I'd love the pristine idea of downloadable HD, but I really don't expect some kind of HD nirvana out of this thing. - craterburnsu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"DVR (i.e., TiVo) functions"
Not really a DVR or Tivo unless it has inputs in my opinion. - digitarius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Everybody should remember, too, that even though OXM *is* the "Official" Xbox Magazine, sometimes that doesn't mean much. Go back and read some of their pre-launch issues and you'll see what I mean. They're more like a rag dedicated to Xbox than some group with spcecial inside access.
Nobody get your hopes up. Microsoft has so far managed to blunt all the "Wow! Cool!" feature possibilities with the 360. Somehow I doubt they'll change their tune and release something truly smokin' and innovative.
That said, I still love the damn thing. - ricodued, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Know what would be BAD ASS?
If this is an iTunes-like purchasing-of-content style.. Imagine if you could plug in your PSP or iPod via USB, and then the Xbox 360 would give you the option of converting your purchased content to the format of your choosing.
It's got three ~3Ghz PowerPC cores for a reason, and it could definitely utilize them.
Come on, that would be one killer feature. - mlock2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0yeah grat idea but my god the 360 i think is running a little hot now i mean temp wise i think there will be alot more heat issues running all these other apps that they are dropping on the system.Ok for instance do you guys ever feel behind your 360 after playing for even an hour it feel hot as hell i think. maybe i am wrong but it seem to be turning into a pc like machine.
- kali25, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So now it all makes sense. I could not understand why DirecTV would dump TiVo, since their new DVR sucks. Microsoft probably made them do it for this deal. TiVo is Linux and $300 DVR. Window Media Center is Windows and $2000 DVR. Xbox the next UlitmateTV? No thanks. I have a 200gb in my TiVo, can't do that with Xbox.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I just got a DirecTV DVR+ (DTV brand dvr), and by looking at the back of the box, only thing I would see reasonable for the connectivity would be through the USB port.
Seeing as how both the 360 and DVR has one. But then again would that really work, being able to stream the content from the DVR to the 360 over USB?
If not, then more than likely there will be a coaxial connection type addon to the 360. Unless the addon they have in mind is some kind of box for the DVR which adds ethernet capability. Makes sense, since Microsoft is pushing wireless/wired connectivity to/from a MCE PC. - suMMx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0seriously the dvr functions and the iptv functionallity are huge with the 360, seriously if they threw diggnation or something similar up on the marketplace it would be awesome. There is no reason why Microsoft cant use the 360 as an iptv portal
- Legondaree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0if this is true it will be pretty cool, the same as itunes pretty much. the thing about the 360 is even though it only has a 20 gig hdd, most of the things you get on "live" can be re downloaded at any time without having to pay again. but 2 things they will need to do for this to work....background and scheduling downloads, and bigger hdd bundles
- staticten, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"What if it's just streaming?"
No way....! but i'm not saying they'll never do it.....it'll just suck in quality if it was streaming.....with the bandwith we all have. - buffymcmuffy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0No Digg until companies realise there is life outside the US.
- zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This makes no sense whats so ever.
My only guess is that this is part of there IpTV deal video on demand.
(look up the deal between AT&T and Microsoft for IPtv.)
I'm sure you have to have a media center PC.
So video will be streamed over to your xbox using it as some type of video head for pay per view and the like. oh and I'm sure it will only support DRM'ed Windows Media files.
The Xbox 2, sorry Xbox 360 has a very small hd. So trying to use it as a pvr make
no sense. Stupid, Monkey headed, expensive. - trunkster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0That's cool if you have directv.
I have comcast, and my dvr is even made by microsoft... (only residents of WA have this guide version). No Xbox 360 support though, it would only make sense though sense the box does have network abilities. - vlsi0n, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0^ Thats a no brainer- MS is already there while apple is still only next to the PC..
- supergwiz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+01st major offensive in the impending Apple vs. M$ Livingroom War.
- ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0Has an Xbox 360 even been for sale in the U.S. since November?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0old news, saw this last night.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0one less box in the clutter, hope its true.
