- rebotfc, on 12/02/2007, -1/+198Well I think they have lost any credibility now, I feel sorry for all the staffers left there. Basically they are all working under the threat that any bad review for a high profile advertiser will get them sacked.
As a gamer how can i trust any of their reviews now? - Chaoticfist, on 12/02/2007, -2/+83They sure did, i am never going back to the site, a lot of people have moved to 1up.com, as well a lot of people have canceled their subscriptions......bad move game spot...very bad move...
- Meus1, on 12/02/2007, -9/+56Nice way of firing him as well. His old profile page on gamespot:
http://www.gamespot.com/pages/profile/index.php?us ...
Picture above userinformation says "You are dead" and there is a big "GAME OVER THIS USER IS BANNED NO CONTINUES" all over. - spudnic, on 12/02/2007, -0/+33It's worse than that for the remaining reviewers though, if they stay and don't get fired, they're going to lose all credibility. Even if they haven't done anything.
- MasterInsan0, on 12/02/2007, -2/+29Gerstmann was the last cool reviewer they had (Alex Navarro moved on to editor, I think). So, yeah, even if they didn't fire him for the review, they still ***** up.
- redrock34, on 12/02/2007, -1/+23I can only imagine the type of corporate culture Gamespot has manifested with the firing of Jeff.
- tehzombie, on 12/02/2007, -11/+31Gamespot fired Jeff Gerstmann?
- Intangible360, on 12/02/2007, -1/+17Here's the problem, we have multiple sources corroborating the story as most people understand it, and even if Gamespot denies it we obviously cannot trust them for it. The only thing we could trust from them at this point was an admission of guilt closely paralleling what we already believe we know.
- ares041, on 12/02/2007, -1/+16this will definitely come back to bite them in the ass
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 12/03/2007, -0/+14I canceled my subscription.
- bethlagarrison, on 12/02/2007, -6/+19What's this "Gamespot"?
- Meus1, on 12/02/2007, -0/+13Whops, my bad seems this was his profilepage http://www.gamespot.com/users/Jeff/
Kinda weird tho haha - silentdragoon, on 12/02/2007, -5/+18Short answer: Yes
Long answer: Yes, we need a story on the front page every ten minutes telling us how poor a decision it was. - bizsumpark182, on 12/02/2007, -0/+11Gamespot...you have lost me forever
- chris9902, on 12/02/2007, -1/+12I used to watch Gamespot's video reviews. I already know the games I want to buy so reviews don't sway me but they were fun to watch. I may still pop over if it's a high profile game but everyday use of the site has ended for me. I'm just not interested in what they have to say.
- NateTheApe21, on 12/02/2007, -1/+11Gamespot has killed all of there on-line credibility and with so many game sites out there, with most offering better services, gamespot forecast doesn't look good, something tells me they will be re-branded in about a year
- juniorb, on 12/02/2007, -0/+9Not only will I never trust a Gamespot review from here on out, but forget CNET too. I used that place a million times as a jumping off point when searching for top-rated electronics. If this is true, I'll never go there again.
- nnagflar, on 12/02/2007, -2/+11...and fewer lame comments from mrdude272.
- tehzombie, on 12/02/2007, -1/+10I was being sarcastic, I thought it was blatant--guess not. :P
- NSMike, on 12/02/2007, -0/+8The sources are anonymous to us, but the people they told (e.g. Penny Arcade) knew who they were talking to and could be trusted not to out them.
- gypsi, on 12/02/2007, -0/+8don't forget cnet. what a dirty operation those chimps are running. i can't wait for the "official sanitized media spin" to come out on monday.
- scojerroc, on 12/03/2007, -0/+7paying member since 2002. cancelled this morning.
- inactive, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6I dont think that was ever his profile. It looks like one that was banned a long time ago for impersonating a gamespot employee. The banned profile was last online in 2006.
- DAaaMan64, on 12/02/2007, -6/+12LOL Gamespot committed suicide by SUCKING don't glorify them by giving them this.
- tsigo, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6Yes, they have. There, that was easy.
It doesn't matter if the truth comes out and it was a completely valid reason. They didn't get in front of this, so anyone that cares about the issue at all will always remember the first, more heinous reason. - thenet411, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6What are you smoking? He was fired because a major Gamespot advertiser didn't like the review or the score. On top of that, you put idiots in suits at the helm and you have a recipe for disaster. The current head of GS actually thinks the sales and marketing team should have input on a review.
Bottom line: Gamespot is dead. Nice going idiots in suits. - estacado, on 12/02/2007, -1/+7I expect them not to read from the text review word for word.
- native, on 12/03/2007, -1/+7Glen Beck is on CNN.
- jonnyeh, on 12/02/2007, -0/+6I agree, regardless of the reason, firing him was dumb. Firing him because they didn't like his review is even more maddening!
- DivisibleByZero, on 12/02/2007, -4/+9Don't be ridiculous. You'll all forget about this in another week.
- Bootes, on 12/02/2007, -1/+6I doubt that was made specifically for him. It's probably the default thing that happens when they disable an account which is usually because of spam or other things no one likes.
- Weather, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4/drama queen
- lalanis, on 12/03/2007, -0/+4You are two years ahead....
- enicholas, on 12/02/2007, -0/+4Six figures? That's nothing. If this doesn't hit seven figures it's just a blip.
- aladrin, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3In the end, it doesn't matter whether the rumors are true or not. GameSpot denied them without giving a real reason, which only fuels the fire. Either it's true or they are legally barred from telling the truth, and it doesn't really matter which. The 'rumor' validates a long and widely held feeling: That the reviewers take money for their reviews.
- ChooChoo3000, on 12/03/2007, -0/+3Sweet Jesus, I just saw a picture of John Larson and I must say he really does look like a total douchebag. Nice hair gel, you big pussy.
- zdiddy85, on 12/02/2007, -0/+3If you feel like arguing with 12 year olds all day.
- capiCrimm, on 12/03/2007, -1/+3not much difference
- darnit, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2http://www.penny-arcade.com/images/2007/20071129.j ...
- Tantrum, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2What they did was out their policy to let financials dictate their reviews and review scores. Basically what they've said is that their review tone and scores can be bought, that's exactly what firing Jeff has outed them for. Now that I know that, I know not to bother going to Gamespot to read reviews because i know they're jaded according to how much advertising revenue the publisher is giving them.
- Vigilo, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2yup i've already taken it out of my favs and not missing it much to be honest. There are just too many sites its easy to forget one.
- cecinestpasvrai, on 12/02/2007, -1/+3I don't think you get how digg works. If people are interested in a story or want to comment on it, it gets put on the front page. It isn't up to you or what you think should happen, it's everyone. If this isn't ok with you, Leave.
- Sytebutcher, on 12/02/2007, -1/+3All topics concerning this are getting locked right now on there forums
- Oomsoup, on 12/03/2007, -0/+2True, they aren't helping themselves at all with the way this is being handled.
- somesthetic, on 12/02/2007, -1/+2the editors are the reviewers. jeff was the editorial director technically.
- TheGreger, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Yeah, the same 1up that pulled that Neverwinter Nights 2 review...
- P5ycHo, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Answer: Yes.
- ReeseKaine, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1Meh. I'd suspect that Gamefaqs is all that Gamespot really had going for them.
BTW, someone should buy that from them. - shreyans, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1digg is user driven. It is what we make it, so I guess this story does have a reason to be on the front page.
- inactive, on 12/03/2007, -0/+1The only dude that keeps me going to GameSpot page. Well one less user for you gamespot
