Developer says PSP still has a lot of life left!
psp3d.xhardwarereviews.com — Well not really a retail developer (think GamesRadar), but one of the PSP scene's most respected homebrew developers, FreePlay, points out the faults of GameWorld's recent claim that the 'PSP is dead', as well as agrees with some of the reasons why Sony, did really, mess up, in his latest podcast.

- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+22If they can put some really good games on it and stop trying to kill homebrew, then yes it has a TON of life left in it.
- WhereAmI, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I agree. homebrew is awesome.
- carbine18, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3agreed
- downlo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Here, here! Homebrew will itself keep the system alive long after publishers stop producing games. Look at the Dreamcast.
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10I agree. I looooove my PSP, it's slick, it's sweet, it's an awesome peice of hardware.
There's just no freakin' content to keep my hooked... and it's frustrating... and since I can't do homebrew (2.80), it's sitting there on my desk, collecting dust... and from time to time, I load it up with some google video content.
NOT what I was expecting a year ago... - HOTM, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2They are not blocking homebrew. The 1.5 exploit is also being used to run ISO's from the memory stick. They are stoping piracy.
- cessax, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5in order for the psp to succeed, yes, sony has to stop patching the flaws that do more good then harm (homebrew). the only negative (in sony's eyes) to homebrew is the illegal ripping and playing of games...how to tackle that issue? how about an itunes for video games, perhaps??
- jonoxplor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Yes it seems something like that, but still the option to make your own games would b nice,it would be like a artist giving away music for free.
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -6/+9I sold mine due to lack of games, and now it seems to finally be improving. heh, I am happier with my DS lite anyway.
- Shorties, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I would of sold mine months ago if it wernt for the homebrew, and this is the first and only console I have ever run modded content on. (And I even owned a dreamcast so that puts in perspective how useless my PSP is to me)
- JCFlores, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Mine is taking dust after I finished GTA:LCS, can someone point out some good homebrew apps?
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5NES or SNES emulators are fun, but it's a bit ironic to have spent $250+ to play NES games...
- CGreen, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3No, there are none.
- Racer_S, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Im still waiting for Gran Turismo 4 Mobile, which was announced at launch... how can it be dead if the best games are still in development?!
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I believe Alanis Morisette put it like this :
It is like a death row pardon,
when all you need is a knife. - vlurk, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@gaijintendo
you mixed up two sentences here. It's either "It's a death row pardon two minutes too late" or "It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife". Good try though. - cohortq, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5BURY ME!
- gaijintendo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3I believe Alanis Morisette put it like this :
- cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"but one of the PSP scene's most respected homebrew developers, FreePlay,"...
And what has he "developed"? Meh, call me back when someone "real" proclaims this. FreePlay has done nothing apart from helping Skylark during the registry hack and fontmod.- Sniper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Exactly. Who cares what FreePlay thinks, its not like he made anything spectacular.
- MasterQ, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0FreePlay IS one of the most respected people in the PSP scene. He may not be the most credited person in the world, but he does contribute a lot to the scene and knows what he's talking about. If you don't believe me I'm sure other great devs like Fanjita can back him up.
- FreePlayPSP, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I may not have developed a lot on my own, but I've helped a lot of people work out the kinks in their own programs. Plus, I encourage new developers and help them figure out how to get started with PSP programming. I think I deserve to be called "respected." Mind if I ask what you've done?
- cyanid3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@FreePlayPSP:
I didn't mean to undermine your contribution. My point is that calling you "one of the PSP's most respected homebrew developers" is like calling me the right-hand man of the PSP's biggest hacker since I test his (NOPx86) stuff :)
- pathy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10Mmm, I feel the PSP is under appreciated.
Firstly, when you CAN use Homebrew, it's a great little device, and has quite a bit of use as... well, a lot of things. A remote with iR Shell, a way to stream shoutcasts, streaming music/video from your PC, maaaybe a little web browser if you're not going to use it for extended periods... and of course, games.
A lot of the games on the PSP are good - although most of them have another console counter part, true, unlike the DS which has a lot of DS only games (The control method, mostly), but that doesn't make them bad.
Syphon Filter stands out as one of the best, as well as Loco Roco, Def Jam, Winning Eleven (Although it comes down to taste.).
I'm really hoping, although I imagine it's unlikely, that Sony open up Homebrew atleast a little bit with the 3.0 Firmware (Which supposedly will have the PS1 Emulator.), ah well.- Racer_S, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1an official ps1 emulator? where'd you hear that? that would be pretty cool!
but i wonder how they would expect you to get the games on there. - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3News on the official emulator.

- bmw@, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The PSP is very useful as the least expensive readily available wireless (WiFi) web browser to do remote control stuff. Who cares if it can do games? I sure don't. WiFi-enabled PDAs are nice if you need a PDA, but they are 2-3 times more expensive.
- Bibimbap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5PSP had one of the best launches ever.
Lumines and Wipeout.
Sadly after all this time, they're still basically the only games on the system worth having.- ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Agreed. I still play both, they're two of the best in their genres, even with ALL consoles considered. I liked Twisted Metal too, but it was no follow-up to Twisted Metal: Black.
- JohnyD, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3I agree with everyone else here. Homebrew on the PSP is fantastic and is the only good reason to buy a PSP. The games (for the most part) absosmurfly blow.
...of course now all my time is taken up with my DS Phat + SC. ;) My GF uses my PSP now. lol ***** you Sony...and all your FSFB's! =D - gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3The real problem with the PSP is that they are putting old PS1 games and crappy looking PS2 games on the PSP which makes every game have a polygon block texture that feels outdated. DS is winning because they create games that look smooth and textured and play well on the DS.
- gtvwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have these games for psp and NONE of them look blocky. Infact for a handheld they look ***** amazing.
Tony Hawks
Harry Potter:TGOF
LocoRoco
Fifa Street 2
Monster Hunter Freedom
GripShift
Prince of Persia
and a heap more. These games all look great and are good fun :) i love my psp, i also have a snes emulator on it with Super Mario, and a SMS emulator with some good old master system games. - ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true for a good majority of the lineup. Syphon Filter looks incredible, and Pursuit Force is pretty impressive. If you are counting Me and My Katamari as blocky though, you have no idea what you are talking about.
- gtvwill, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have these games for psp and NONE of them look blocky. Infact for a handheld they look ***** amazing.
- mark925, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4It says something about the quality of the games on the system when people want it for homebrew stuff more than anything.
- ZeonZumDeikun, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Not true. Homebrew is still a very small group of people, and plenty of people love the PSP for it's games. LocoRoco would simply suck on the DS or any other handheld.
- RedZeppelin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Just imagine how popular the PSP would be if Sony loosened their grip and let developers run wild. It's such a powerful device that truly talented people could be developing some fantastic (and most likely free) apps for it, such as Palm-like calendars and appointment books, network sniffers, e-book readers, PDF or Office viewers, etc.
I know some of those are available now, but only to those brave and smart enough to jump through all the hoops required to install homebrew on newer systems.- vlurk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The problem with using a PSP as an handheld computer is that there is no good human interface device for it: no keyboard, no touchscreen. Therefore, a lot of applications would probably be tedious to use. And keeping a usb keyboard+touchpad device with you would be quite unpractical for an handheld computer. Consequently, I don't think the market for that kind of upgrade (device+applications) would be that big. Oh well, what do I know after all...
Btw, it is possible to read PDF and Office documents by converting them to html first. It's not ideal to say the least, but it works and doesn't require any homebrew software on your PSP.

- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3My PSP is running on the 2.71 SE firmware which was released by Dark Alex about a week ago. Nothing touches that setup in any mobile gaming device as far as I am concerned. What's great is that at least 80% of PSP owners can convert to that firmware.
PSP dead? Bah, the scene is just getting warmed up! - IcerC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sony and damn DRM. The PSP is full of life still but could do with out...
UMD Game subscription service/game download service+buy games on SD.
That won't happen, but if it did the thing would be real popular. (and smaller) +cheaper to manufacture.
Right now, as you read this, 457 million people around the world are having sex!.... and you're on the damn computer! - atomicnoodle, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The psp never died! I take it everywhere i go. Yeah...there is a lack of games but the ones that are out aren't bad. Besides, LocoRoco just came out and that is the only game you need ;D.
- goman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Games to play on the PSP according to me.
Winning Eleven 9 - great game ( I like it better than the Xbox version) and go to gamefaqs.com to get the real kits and names for all the teams.
Syphon Filter - one of my favorite shooters of all time.
Loco Roco - simple pick up and play and fun. My daughter loved watching me play this one.
I am 31and I enjoy my PSP.
PS - 31 year olds don't have time or patience for RPGs anymore.- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I'm over 30 as well and quite enjoy the now very extensive PSP games lineup. The games suit the more mature gamer more than the competition as far as I am concerned.
- armyturtle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"PS - 31 year olds don't have time or patience for RPGs anymore."
I thought this point needed to be driven home a little more.
- MM005, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Yeah sure! And I will own MS and Sony in a couple years as well! Homebrew is also very popular on the DS so much for that being a PSP only thing.
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Homebrew is also very popular on the DS"
Good luck with the limited homebrew capabilities you have there. Ironically the Nintendo back catalog runs better on the PSP ^_^
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5"Homebrew is also very popular on the DS"
- PRlME, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2i would take a SEGA GameGear over ah PSP any day!
- zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Wow, can I play as well?!?! I'd rather an ATARI Lynx instead of a DS anyday!
- shampoovta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3 I do love my PSP too.
