- Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -4/+41The Xbox crew are so awesome. Who said MS was evil? :)
Also, I think they're dropping a bit of a clue that the update will be released tomorrow ::crosses fingers:: - phore, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15The Xbox division in Microsoft is probably the best thing thats happened to the company in a while. Ever since Xbox Live debuted for the Xbox 1 I've been hooked on Xbox. I can't wait until the video camera is introduced into the mix.
- gk128, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13I can't wait for this update. Booting to the dashboard with a disc in the drive is the greatest addition yet.
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11I agree, Lumiras. While Nintendo is being more innovative with their newest console (unless it turns out I'm wrong), MS seems to be most in-tune with their customers' desires. Optional HD, fully-realized online play, and a slick dashboard interface that integrates home media and online content are a few arguments for my opinion.

It's an arms race. No one really wins initially, but the competitor with the fat wallets spends the opposition into the ground.
When no one forks out the $600 for the PS3, MS will be laughing all the way to the bank. - liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8That along with background downloading, both will be great and will make my experience a lot more fluid! You wouldn't believe how many downloads I've cancelled just because I got bored and just simply wanted to get started on a game.
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7boot to dash and background dl'ing are great, but i like the fact your music will always keep playing. from one game, to the ui, and to another games, you music just keeps kicking out the grooves! now i can listen to Peter, Paul, and Mary ALL THE TIME!
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Just wait until you make a friend, accept a friends request THEN lay your eyes on his unmentionable.
- liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6The current lineup of games don't "Suck" as you put it. If you don't like any of the 360 lineup games then I'm sure you are impossible to please.
I do agree with the mediacenter. To dumb it down I simply wish I could play/stream a movie without having to own the windows media center. - estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6alright, the question that's been bugging [and scaring] us all since the announcement of the camera..
you CAN take photos, and you CAN attach them to your gamertag, but they're only 'Personal photos' and only your friends will be able to see them, so NO, you can't take a picture of anything and you use as your gamertag icon thing.
.. otherwise, so many [small] changes, especially fast forward/rewind videos, background downloading and seeing which song is playing and the progress of that song are awesome. - aresef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6And because of family settings, MS can take no responsibility if LittleJohnny accepts a friend request from DEEZNUTS1337 and views the personal picture.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Not to mention the XBox Live revenue... I mean, how many paying Live members are there? Like 3 million or so? Well if each one payed about ~$5/mo for Live Gold, that's $15million a month....
Microsoft makes up there loses in other ways.... - chuckythe2651, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I hate their OS (I'm a Mac guy) but damn the Xbox is great! I think they are going to hit 99% of the problems I had with the dashboard. Now if we could just get them to enable Divx and Xvid decoding...then it would be perfect!
- anarchocap, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know, background downloading, so you can go make a sandwich. HAHAH
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5@ Hickeroar
The only company that didn't lose money on selling its consoles was Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft both lost money every time one was sold. The gap is even larger this generation but once again Nintendo is still making a profit on selling its consoles AND its games.
Do you really think they'd still be considered competition if the Gamecube was sold at a loss? The company would have gone the way of Sega and its Dreamcast.
PS : Do you really see yourself playing a 40 hour RPG on Wii with your arms swinging around all the time? Different games for different people, my friend. - rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5I am relieved that the pics are friends only, I was worried about playing halo 3 and seeing a picture little johnny took of his unmentionable area.
- lukeo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6I thought the xbox team was the directx team? Or at least, some of the people in the directx team were key players in the design of the xbox... so yes, good work xbox and directx people.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I didn't know you could do that (Ctrl U). Thanks, that was awesome. I'll probably get modded down just for thanking you, too.
- Meshyf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Got to disagree with you ronnyek.
The xbox360 has a lot of good games going for it. Oblivion, Kameo (I enjoyed it even though it was fairly short), PGR3, GRAW (The online mode is insanely fun), Burnout Revenge.
Go to gamefly, get a subscription and try this stuff out man.
The mediacenter is crippled though, I agree 110%. I own a media center and the connection the xbox360 is iffy at best. Reconfiguring everything works but it can still be incredibly cumbersome. Once its up and running though it can still be pretty awesome except not being able to stream AVI's or any other really good video format. - stormbine, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4what about when 100 articles pop up showing the same 3 pictures of the new mac book, or whatever piece of hardware jobs is set to realease next.... does that upset you as well ? or is that cool ?
- KingAdrock, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8What about the DirectX team? I think those guys need props -- as much as anyone complains about MS you can always say to them "get down on your knees and worship directX"
- jordan1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I seem to play more Xbox live arcade games (Zuma and Uno) than my regular 360 games.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The fact that there is a demo of the new software is news... Most of the stuff you submit isn't anywhere close to news if you're getting picky. Go and whine somewhere else.
- Sagarian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4They need meta-ratings... like "probably a sore loser" tag for folks who have a higher propensity to rep ding when they lose.
- davidkain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ sinembarg0 - Is a loss of $300 a valid number? No sarcasm or smartass here, I'm actually curious as to whether that number is (roughly) accurate, and what you based your estimate on.
Other things to consider:
-- Microsoft has deep pockets, and can afford to lose a lot at the outset to make gains in the future (hence their much earlier release)
-- Production costs reduce with time, so the loss Microsoft takes goes down as well (no idea how much it would reduce over time, however, so this could be negligible) - fani, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I love the dashboard. I was never a fan of online gaming but this Xbox dashboard with easy access to Xbox live is superb. I now regularly go online and download demos, trailers, themes etc.
Its turned me into an online gamer.
Also, love how PGR3 keeps track of my solo career performance with cool online stats.
I can race offline and it'll still download and show my ranking compared to other drivers after an offline race.
Well done MS. - brasilcaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Adding a peripheral to the same concept of games doesn't necessarily make it fun either. "What's the world with yet another 1st person shooter?" Well, what's with the world with another Super Smash Brothers? I'm sure another Mario Kart is in the works also.
- 8ight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i think the fixed every one of my complaints. i just signed on to live about two weeks ago and these were the things i noticed in that time. i know the long time live gamers have really noticed these shortcomings. but it is very nice to see these things fixed. too bad major didn't say anything about the firmware hack =b that's something that is going to be interesting. great video! can't wait...
- linus7, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Yes ? ... No ?
Either way, if your looking in the source, it'll be the .mp4 (Ctrl. F. after pressing Ctrl. U. in Firefox while viewing page...)
http://download.microsoft.com/download/a/2/b/a2bb08f3-3efa-467e-a9d7-ef955bf61526/XboxLiveUpdate_s_on10.mp4 - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Hm. This console is looking more and more attractive. I haven't seen anything about a PS3 showing of this kind of technology on their system... Could this be another bungle on their part? XBox live has been around since the first XBox, and I've been on it since I've owned my XBox... This is a major foot in the door, I think. I may end up picking one of these suckers up before long.
- Allanon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Microsoft makes money from the Xbox 360 in so many ways that selling it at a loss in not a big deal. Microsoft owns and publishes a lot of the games so they are making a profit from them. Microsoft sells the tools needed to build games for the Xbox 360. Microsoft gets the money from Xbox Live subscriptions. Microsoft gets licensing fees for the use of their game trademarks, if someone wants to use the likeness of Master Chief then Microsoft gets money. Microsoft gets money from other publishers that want their game to work with Xbox Live. Microsoft gets money from peripherals such as extra controllers, cables, and the new webcam.
I don't think Microsoft is hurting by sell the Xbox 360 for a loss, it just looks like a loss on paper for tax reasons. - Superfito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If Microsoft was dumb, on the business side of things, they wouldn't have billions of dollars to put into the Xbox division. Yeah, I realize that Microsoft lost 4 billion dollars on the Xbox, but Microsoft doesn't care. The sole purpose of the Xbox was to break into the console market which it successfully (luckily?) did. With the 360, Microsoft is really starting from scratch, and if they become successful in this market, that 4 billion in losses is going to be made up over the next "x" amount of years. It's a long term plan and with Microsoft's huge foundation: Windows, Live, 360, MSN Messenger, PC gaming etc. they are going to make a lot of money from software integration alone.
- tizz66, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm really happy to see MS are doing some good these days. It seems just about every development team there is doing some good stuff. I was really impressed with Dashboard when I got my 360, the improvements look great.
- quanta88, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You can copy your old savedgames/themes from your old profile to the new Live-enabled one via the Memory option in the purple blade. Unfortunately, you will lose all your achievements and Gamerscore. :(
- estvir, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2err, just hit little download arrow and it will give you 3 options, ipod, psp & wmv.. personally i chose .wmv then streamed it to my x360 via media centre.
- patnakajima, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'm not gonna trade my xbox360 for a wii, but I do know what you mean. However, within the next year, a lot of really cool games are coming, and by the 2007 holiday season, the xbox360's line up is going to be incredible.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2should be great!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I wouldn't say it stealing, media center ways made to stream these kinds of files around the house.
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3If not, it probably won't be till next Monday, since no new stuff on Fridays....
So cross those fingers even tighter.... - spyder91, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@sinembarg0
Not to confirm that number but I'm sure no one bought any games to play on Live, never downloaded a single thing from XBL Marketplace, never bought any accessories, nor did they give MS a chance to make up whatever loss the 360 caused buying any other high margin products. I'm sure none of that happened. - swaxhog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Puff, puff!
- mattb19us, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Holy damn! I downloaded it from that link Linus7 gave. I've never seen my connection that fast. I downloaded it at 11 megs. That was insane!!!!
- mdowney00, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@Meshyf
You have to get Transcode360, it has fixed all my complaints about what types of videos the Xbox will stream from mediacenter. AVI, Xvid, Divx...this will let you do them all. It works by transcoding on the fly to the format that the Xbox allows. - jedi0utkast, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You can choose not to read, digg or reply to any post... maybe you are just in search for someone to pay attention to you, like a kid when grown ups are having a conversation.. Stop whining and go ride your bike.
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wouldn't call it stealing either. It's want the customers wanted, not to mention it's really not that innovative of a feature. It's just nice to have.
- redneckblues, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You could hijack Xbox Live... But otherwise, no. Unless you want to setup another box with a live account and point the camera at your computer screen and watch it over live.
- macko, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@ronnyek
They didn't just add 3d and better graphics...the extra processing power can now go towards better physics and AI engines. To me, these two are what a lot of the newer games absolutely fun. The game I got most time out of was Need For Speed: Most Wanted and I thought the physics were amazing. - schwegler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Is There a way to send my Xbox360 Video w/o a WMCPC?
- coldfusion1970, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah that was great.
Well i guess it is downloading in the background IF you're in the kitchen doing something else. - liquilife, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yes, very true. Gosh though, what are they to do? Plenty of people will love the personal picture gamertile. I am sure a lot of innocent fun will be gotten out of it. It's just the inevitability of seeing something we don't want to see that will garnish the most attention. Should be interesting.
