Death by iPhone? Why Spore Means the End of the PSP
popularmechanics.com — The PSP had a great run. At least according to Sony—and its sales numbers.

- dbldn, on 07/16/2008, -5/+171Spore will kill PSP? I disagree completely. One game cannot kill a system. A new version of the DS... maybe.
- jellydoughnut21, on 07/17/2008, -0/+32Couldn't agree more, it's a ridiculous article
- infinitus64, on 07/17/2008, -2/+3The Ds is not going to have another revision till sales are slowing down and i wish people would stop perpetuating the rumor of a widescreen ds ; not saying that you are.
- nmnnotmyname, on 07/17/2008, -2/+7The DS was really cool because it was actually something new and not just a bunch of the same ideas thrown together with updated technology.
I hope they can pull that off again if they ever make a successor. - Aeomyr, on 07/17/2008, -13/+3What? The advance the SP and the DS all came out within like 3 seconds of each other and as far as I could tell nothing changed.
- worminater, on 07/17/2008, -3/+11touchscreen? nothing changed?
- nmnnotmyname, on 07/17/2008, -2/+7The DS was really cool because it was actually something new and not just a bunch of the same ideas thrown together with updated technology.
- edru, on 07/17/2008, -1/+20The only thing that keeps this from killing the PSP .... NO CONTROLS, ***** accelerometers, i want a thumb stick.
- bjornski, on 07/17/2008, -5/+20Steve hates buttons.
Steve says it's best.
So it's best. - scstraus, on 07/17/2008, -3/+11Exactly. I mean, how many games do you really think will benefit from a touchscreen and tilt interface? I'd say about 5% of the current catalog of games. There will be some spectacular games for the iPhone, but they will be few.
- bjornski, on 07/17/2008, -5/+20Steve hates buttons.
- scstraus, on 07/17/2008, -6/+6Exactly. I mean, how many games do you really think will benefit from a touchscreen and tilt interface? I'd say about 5% of the current catalog of games. There will be some spectacular games for the iPhone, but they will be few.
- MindStalker, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1I think you may be able to put a little dpad and a/b buttons on the touch screen, wonder how well that would work?
- ChaosIncarnate, on 07/17/2008, -2/+6One game cannot kill a system? So soon we forget E.T.
- KillsTheWeak, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4The E.T. comment is ***** funny, but not entirely accurate. Ya the game sucked balls, and they had to get rid of tons of left over carts. But the Video Game Crash was caused by to many game that were pretty much the same repetitive *****. Luckily every once awhile something unique comes out on a system to keep the video game industry afloat, it's usually Nintendo :P
- rpgmaker, on 07/17/2008, -0/+3Agreed, the article is sensationalism at its finest.
- crossmr, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Clearly with statements like this:
"The one major platform not invited to the party: the PlayStation Portable. "
I didn't see any mention of PS3 and XBox360 in the list of platforms..
- crossmr, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Clearly with statements like this:
- FranzySF, on 07/17/2008, -2/+8@Dbldn
You are right. This article is ***** stupid. Iphone can keep its crappy version of spore.- Archer007, on 07/18/2008, -8/+2Buried for "@"
- damnyooneek, on 07/18/2008, -6/+2didnt the DS already kill the psp in sales?
- ZenMojo, on 07/18/2008, -2/+3"Kill" as in "scratch painfully," of course. No one's even seen the graphics or gameplay of spore.
- fuzzymath007, on 07/18/2008, -3/+0Agreed, but also it's not looking good for the PSP.
- misterdrumz, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I just got a DS and have confirmed my thoughts that the PSP and DS fill two completely different niches.
DS has some pretty "fun" games like the marios and zeldas but doesn't really have the multimedia chops that the PSP does (uness you use a homebrew cart but that's cheating)
The PSP can do like for like consoles ports which is a good and a bad thing, invariably it's just a technological boon as it's pretty much a PS2 in your pocket but also means less dedicated games (like Locoroco
- LooterMcBeer, on 07/16/2008, -7/+68So just because spore isn't being made for the PSP its gonna to kill it? Seriously I know spore is going to be a hot game for the hardcore gamers but Ive yet to see anyone who isn't into hardcore gaming think spore looks even remotely fun. The thing that hurts the PSP is the cost. Most parents wont cut their kid loose with a $169 handheld. Sure the $129 DS is only $40 cheaper but its perception. The PSP also isn't nearly as kid friendly as the Nintendo DS. Sony is sitting on the verge of making the PSP explode and they have been forever they just wont do the things necessary to make it happen. Drop the PSP to $139 and drop the price of the games $10 and sales would more then likely skyrocket.
Lets be honest here also ill use Assassins creed as an example. You play it on the Xbox 360 then you go look at it for the DS...... Seriously... That game completely sucks on the DS. Thank the gaming gods for things like the cycloDS so i didnt actually waste money on that worthless game along with the hundreds of other completely pitiful games for the DS. The DS is perfectly suited for things like Brain Age, Petz, and kids games. The PSP on the other hand can handle alot better games and look good while doing it.- Katana314, on 07/17/2008, -3/+20Phoenix Wright is no kid's game.
"The victim was killed by twelve chainsaws, your honor." - acero47, on 07/17/2008, -11/+22Please stop using the same cliched stereotypes of PSP = great graphics for "grown up" hardcore games and DS = kiddy crap. There are plenty of excellent games on the DS that are far from kiddy (TWEWY, Trauma Center, Etrian Odyssey, the Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy remakes, Izuna, etc). We should be beyond this by now. Both systems have good games and both have crap. Real "hardcore" gamers can tell the difference and will enjoy the system(s) they have.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/17/2008, -6/+22I have both, they definitely do fit their stereotypes. That's what a stereotype is, a generalization. Of course there's an exception to the rule, but for the most part DS has a ton of ***** kid games.
- insidius, on 07/17/2008, -6/+12And the PSP just has a ton of ***** games full stop. I actually purchased a PSP first before purchasing a DS and other then the homebrew at the time (I had mine shipped from japan into australia) there was just no decent software for it. I still have it here and sometimes I go to EB and try looking for something that does not suck however the number of quality DS titles just heavily crushes what is able to be purchased for the PSP making it an easy choice of which one to buy software for.
- ShrimpCrackers, on 07/17/2008, -5/+11I'd sadly have to agree. As an owner of all three handhelds (iPhone included), the stereotype fits perfectly.
Where in Phoenix Wright for the DS you may get someone simply lightly describing a murder, in Manhunt 2 for the PSP, you see someone get hacked to pieces, blood flying everywhere, while the victim screams desperately for mercy.
Also the title of this article is fluff. it compares the graphics of a 2D game (Spore) versus Resistance which is a 3D FPS. What it should have done was compare Super Monkey Ball with say another platformer for the PSP such as Daxter (at which point you'll see that Daxter has much much better graphics).
So this prophecy will never happen. The iPhone needs buttons (Super Monkey Ball is neat but needs a LOT OF FIXES and the tilt sensor on the iPhone just doesn't cut it here) otherwise I will still play my RPGs / Advance Wars on the DS, and my PSP will still have all the other games. - twiztidsinz, on 07/17/2008, -5/+1TWEWY was SUCH a kids game...
They give you a challenge to solve then force you tap along while the characters make the solution themselves.
Lemme recap the whole thing for ya:
Day X
Girl: We need to figure out how to complete < objective here >
Guy: But how are we going to do that???
Girl: I dunno but im gonna go over here and be emo.
Guy: Ugh you're so emo!!!
Guy :to self: How will I ever solve this problem
Take two steps
Guy :to self: maybe she knows how to solve the problem
Girl: OK! Im not emo anymore! Maybe we should talk to < new character / object >
Girl or Guy: They seem to be having trouble lets scan them!
Guy or Girl: Hmm... gotta kill teh monstars *scratchscratchscratch taptaptap*
Girl: Lets implant an idea into their mind!
< implant wrong thought > Random character: Thats not right....
< implant correct thought > Random character: Of course!!
Girl: So THATS the solution to the challenge!!
Guy: ok lets go
Boss fight.. more scratching/tapping/drawing for combat.
End of Day X - Manudo, on 07/17/2008, -3/+2Personally, I think both handhelds have their pretty obvious pros and cons. I only have a DS, but I've seen the PSP in action... and yes, it has good graphics. But graphics don't necessarily make a game.
- Tahiri, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I hate retards who think PSPs advanced processing power/hardware only = advanced graphics.
- johnroth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3I have both. The DS is a great system, but the PSP just has more technical features that are very awesome that I really miss on the DS. (A screen brightness button, a sleep mode, a home button, memory card support) I really enjoy the DS and it has a lot of great games but so does the PSP. I think I like the PSP better. But I'm glad I have both.
- Katana314, on 07/17/2008, -3/+20Phoenix Wright is no kid's game.
- InRussetShadows, on 07/16/2008, -4/+60No one game makes or breaks a platform anymore.
- Insanitation, on 07/17/2008, -5/+2Anymore?...i did not know it ever did?
- lordtyros, on 07/17/2008, -4/+25Halo made the Xbox.
- InorganicMatter, on 07/17/2008, -8/+6Yes it does, just ask the PS3 drones about MGS4.
- mywhitenoise, on 07/17/2008, -11/+2MGS4 is the best title on there, but that didn't stop me from buying a PS3 for other exclusives like Ratchet, Uncharted, and Warhawk. Resistance 2, LBP, SOCOM, InFamous, and God of War III will be nice in the next year.
Stop being a dick, what great exclusives does 360 have? Don't name any titles I can find on PC. - Radan, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1Seriously, say what you want about the PS3, but there are still alot of people, and I really mean alot, who solely buys it for MGS4.
I don't really blame them though, MGS4 was indeed a very good game. - Elranzer, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1mywhitenoise... stop advertising for Sony. You almost make me wanna sell my PS3 and PSP.
- jjhuddle, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.... Halo made xbox rich. fact.
- Insanitation, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Microsoft was rich way before xbox was ever around.
- geneticlone, on 07/17/2008, -3/+4Final Fantasy XIII could have well just killed future PS3 sales...
- PopASquatt, on 07/18/2008, -2/+1What's so great about Final Fantasy? The only titles from the franchise worth buying were 7,8,10 and Crisis Core.
- Insanitation, on 07/17/2008, -5/+2Anymore?...i did not know it ever did?
- 3sicasity, on 07/16/2008, -1/+128Wow ,look at the thumbnail. Spore looks amazing!
- gmprunner, on 07/17/2008, -2/+13And on a handheld, too!
- santaliqueur, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Pff, it's a cutscene.
- tykwondingo, on 07/17/2008, -8/+1Haha, different game, buddy... close though!
- elr0y7, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0I think he got that, it called sarcasm :)
- tykwondingo, on 07/17/2008, -8/+1Haha, different game, buddy... close though!
- MrFisty, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I was looking at it thinking "*****, these guys building recreations of famous game characters are getting really good".
- rmeddy, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4Someone created a brumak. and a Marcus and Dom.
- mugicha, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1That's gotta be pre-rendered. There's no way the PSP has graphics that good. Plus I don't think you can make creatures like that in Spore...or can you?
- elr0y7, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0Lol, oh yeah man, you can make anything in Spore. But their Brumak has nothing on my recreation of the Sistine Chapel ;)
- pktgumby, on 07/16/2008, -0/+16Oh, I get it, we're going off of the Mayan Calendar or something like that, in which this is April Fool's Day, right? Can't think of any other reason for this joke of an article.
- ruddy, on 07/17/2008, -5/+34PSP killer?! PSP sells to kids who can't afford $70 a month. Completely different user base.
- jdaniel284, on 07/17/2008, -7/+1I am literally a millionaire, and I will not pay $70 a month for an iPhone. Then again, that is one of the reasons I'm a millionaire.
Enjoy your iPhone and your iDebt.- santaliqueur, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Literally a millionaire? Adam Carolla?
iDebt. I see what you did there. Not original at all, but I get it. - lolupissed, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5Dude I thought I was the only millionaire on Digg
- jdaniel284, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6I am a Zimbabwe millionaire.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/4765187.stm - eyefork2, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2Hay guiz, I'm a millionaire too! Whaddup?
- panickedthumb, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Hello good sirs:
I am a Nigerian millionaire, but due to circumstances beyond my control, I must move some of this money to a US bank account. If you assist me, you will be greatly rewarded with $250,000. Please respond to me with your account information so that I may wire you the money, and send an initial fee of $250 to cover the cost of overseas wire transfer.
P.S.- I will not pay $70 a month for an iPhone
- santaliqueur, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Literally a millionaire? Adam Carolla?
- corygreenwell, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2um...also works for iPod touch...in case you didn't read that part....of course they mentioned the iPhone being the PSP killer because it's a better buzzword and the Touch just uses the hand-me-down iPhone technology...
- jdaniel284, on 07/17/2008, -7/+1I am literally a millionaire, and I will not pay $70 a month for an iPhone. Then again, that is one of the reasons I'm a millionaire.
- IrvineKinneas50, on 07/17/2008, -4/+65Wake me up when my iPhone plays thousands of SNES, Sega, and Nintendo games like my PSP does.
- mechcon, on 07/17/2008, -10/+4wake up!
Installer.app had emulators available for the snes, sega and nes. :)- IrvineKinneas50, on 07/17/2008, -0/+15And they run like garbage and the controls are on a touchscreen. Trust me, I've tried them, and they suck.
- VVCephei, on 07/18/2008, -3/+0Why are people digging you down? You answered his question.
Sure they may not play That well on an Iphone.... But you're forgetting that Iphone isn't a gaming machine. It's a phone... And to even be able to run those games (even if poorly) is still quite impressive.
- NGliam, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2I haven't used any homebrew on my PSP since they fixed the GTA loading thing, but the PSP was perfect for emulators. There weren't any good homebrew games, but I had a tonne of brilliant SNES and Mega Drive games that I played more than my PSP games :p Now I mostly use my PSP for remote play, wifi internet, music and films =D
- johnroth, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1What emulator do you use for SNES? It runs so sloooow! I would love to play me some Earthbound hacks...
- mechcon, on 07/17/2008, -10/+4wake up!
- roxya, on 07/17/2008, -1/+28Call me when Patapon 2 comes out on iPhone.
- revjustin2, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5PATAPON ROCKS IT!
- chadadams, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5POM!- POM!- PATAPON!!!
- JayD16, on 07/18/2008, -0/+4Patapon pata-pwns...
- GeorgeStone2, on 07/17/2008, -3/+56Buried for obvious reason.
- Gee1004, on 07/17/2008, -5/+1Filter it
- B1663r, on 07/17/2008, -5/+13The iPhone fans are lowering their expectations... It is no longer the all in one device that is going to replace computers...
- neocitron, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1well... not yet.
- Migito, on 07/17/2008, -3/+5It's nearing the end of the PSP and DS life cycles anyway, so I sort of doubt it.
- MWilson1992, on 07/17/2008, -0/+48I don't own a PSP, but this article sucks.
- Insanitation, on 07/17/2008, -0/+27How does this artical have any + diggs?
- mywhitenoise, on 07/17/2008, -0/+16because it's "iPhone".
- wexmajor, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Because it's a pain in the ass to go back and bury an article you've already dugg.
- Sairgem, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3I'd say a couple hundred belong to Nintendo fanboys having an orgasm over seeing the words "end of PSP".
- Brew, on 07/17/2008, -0/+24Who takes game industry speculation from popular mechanics? seriously.
- trackerbishop, on 07/17/2008, -15/+11popular mechanics = propaganda site linked to bush
buried.- jerrycurley, on 07/17/2008, -6/+16HILARIOUS! You hate popular mechanics becuase of how thoruoughly, and accurately, they debunked all your ***** 9/11 conspiracies. Awesome!
- Atomic05, on 07/17/2008, -5/+4I read that article once and thought it was quite good. Then I read up on the theories and made my own decisions. I went back to the article and found that they really only debunked the easy stuff: puffs of smoke and the like that even I found outlandish. The really questionable stuff they don't even mention, and their article is far from comprehensive.
What about the molten metal? The cut support beams? The complete and sudden retardation of our air defense network? The free-fall speed of the collapse? The totality of the destruction? The absolute lack of true investigation? The immediate removal and disposal of any evidence? The seizure of video recordings of the Pentagon impact?
Questions like the above and more are what make me doubt 9/11 and it's official story. There are too many holes for me to buy it. - jerrycurley, on 07/17/2008, -4/+0You OBVIOUSLY diodn't think for yourself. The collapse was not even CLOSE to free fall. You may have noticed that before the collapse, part of hte facade fell away. It landed LONG before the rest of the building. So, unless you are claiming that the facade had a jet pack and was accelerating faster than free fall, the building did not fall at free fall speeds.
The fact that you brought that up meakes it clear that there is no reason to care about what you have to say on the subject. - ZenMojo, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I think he hates it because the editor at the time was Michael Chertoff's nephew.
- covertbadger, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1"The collapse was not even CLOSE to free fall"
The whole free-fall thing is absolutely the most retarded truther argument - except possibly the lasers-from-space thing. It demonstrates willful selective observation and an utter failure to understand the basic concept of acceleration. When a truther mentions free-fall, you know they've got nothing and can be safely dismissed.
- Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -2/+9Well said, Its what all delusional people will say when you show them solid evidence and logical arguments the only things they can say is its propaganda or its part of the conspiracy.
There is no link between the 2 popular mechanics has come down hard on republicans before in regards to many policies and decisions.
- jerrycurley, on 07/17/2008, -6/+16HILARIOUS! You hate popular mechanics becuase of how thoruoughly, and accurately, they debunked all your ***** 9/11 conspiracies. Awesome!
- iamsmooth, on 07/17/2008, -2/+45Burried for being retarded. In that logic, Spore for PC should kill PS3, 360, and the Wii...
- BlueSkyfish, on 07/17/2008, -11/+1It coming out for Wii too
- iamsmooth, on 07/17/2008, -3/+4A different crap version is coming out for Wii. It's a different game with a different (crappy) concept. Basically it's just trying to use the name "Spore" to make money off of Nintendo fans. In short, don't buy it...
- JasonHaley, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3How short does your attention span have to be that you get distracted before you even read the last word of his comment?
- BlueSkyfish, on 07/17/2008, -11/+1It coming out for Wii too
- spookyttws, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6I get that they want to sell a lot of games, but does it really need to be released on every platform invented?
- johnroth, on 07/18/2008, -0/+3Yes. Yes it does.
- shutaro, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9It was smashed by an iBrick...
- Eparause, on 07/17/2008, -11/+0If anyone should know, it would be Popular Mechanics. Dugg for truth
- Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1Would learn english speak correctly get more respect maybe would for dumbass comments.
- bjornski, on 07/17/2008, -0/+1Yeah, because nobody understands the gaming market like PM.
- Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -2/+1Would learn english speak correctly get more respect maybe would for dumbass comments.
- jtbndy, on 07/17/2008, -1/+20191 diggs for this garbage article? Thats a lot of msaleem digg whores.
- revjustin2, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4Anything submitted by msaleem should be seriously questioned. They are a PR person who games Digg on behalf of clients. Please un-friend msaleem and stop the manipulations.
- phoenixp3k, on 07/17/2008, -1/+14Wait... what? iPhone + Spore = diggs ??
How can a game that comes out on the 3rd year of a platform be considered life giving or ending?? So if Spore came to the PSP they would sell like "hot cakes"? Japan only needs to hear Monster Hunter and Final Fantasy to go "ape *****" about something.
You know what... now I'm pissed off. How can you start an article and proclaim the PSP dead? "The PSP had a great run." - jerrycurley, on 07/17/2008, -3/+8God I love it when people with no knowledge of a topic decide to write an article on that topic.
Do they honestly not realize that even using Apple's RIDICULOUSLY high 10 million prediciton, that it doe vn come close to being a significant player in the gaming industry. (Especialy since not all iPhone buyers give a flying ***** about playing games on it.) And using more realistic projections for iPhones sold, it will not matter at all. - Iztikeit, on 07/17/2008, -0/+16Spore =/= determining factor of ANYTHING
- schoate09, on 07/17/2008, -10/+4The PSP was ever alive?
(PSP/PS3 owner)- volacide, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5You clearly don't homebrew. 8gb memory stick ftw. Super Metroid. PS1 classics. Everything and anything.
- Elranzer, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Justifying your PSP purchase with SNES games is both ironic and unnatural.
- volacide, on 07/18/2008, -1/+1You couldn't be more wrong. What other system are you able to carry around in your pocket and play Super Metroid, Super Mario, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy VII-IX, Resident Evils, and any other PS1 game available. As well as all SNES, NES, and tons of Sega games. Seriously. You're missing out.
- pktgumby, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8Nowhere near as alive as Johnny Five!!!
- Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6There's allot of good games on the psp now.
God of war, Wipeout Pulse, Patapon, Echochrome, just to name a couple off the top of my head.
- volacide, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5You clearly don't homebrew. 8gb memory stick ftw. Super Metroid. PS1 classics. Everything and anything.
- Rudegar, on 07/17/2008, -5/+1hope iphone games will use opengl can as such move more general stuff to opengl all around
- jwchen, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4the PSP is actually quite popular in asia, especially places like singapore, taiwan, and hong kong. japan i'd say is split 50/50 between the psp and nintendo ds. trust me, the psp won't be "dying" anytime soon.
- blackrave, on 07/17/2008, -0/+2I read some time ago that in Scandinavia, the PSP is doing slightly better than the DS, as one of the few "places" in the world. I've got one. My sister bought her DS in France, so that won't count on the sales numbers.
- revjustin2, on 07/17/2008, -2/+2Here we go again with the gamers declaring death of something or another. I officially declare the death of declaring things that were never living to begin with dead.
- FSTRM, on 07/17/2008, -6/+1you cant kill psp, people either have one, or dont, spore sucks complete dick.
SPORE SUCKS I MEAN WTF.
okay, so all the old gay people will be playing spore on their iphone?
wow, what a threat, monster hunter is the only game worth getting the psp for anyways, i have my copy, and then so im set, ***** spore, ***** iphone. - l800LEMMINGS, on 07/17/2008, -3/+3i don't think that spore will kill the psp, but psp is dying slowly on its own, i loved the psp but it's failure to adapt to the marketplace and most importantly consumer demands will lead to it's extinction
- shinythingy, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2Sales in Japan beg to differ. It has just exploded this year.

- BigPapi, on 07/17/2008, -3/+9Can't Digg go 30 minutes without a goddamn iPhone story on the front page? Buried!
- magic6435, on 07/17/2008, -4/+6the iphone has no buttons.............................
- SystemError51, on 07/17/2008, -5/+2Wrong: it does have the Home Button, Sleep/Wake Button, and Volume +/-. While these may be slightly inconvenient for any game or even software, I might point out that the multitouch screen can display any button you want and as much buttons as you want, which you can all touch at the same time. Maybe it's just me, but I find that really cool.
- Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -1/+6Yapp that alone is going to make it hard to get good control execution out of for many styles of games.
I'm sure it will have some cool games though but its not going to be killing nintendo or sony's handhelds any time soon.- doctordbx, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Tactile response is an important part of gaming.
Think about it, people rubbish the XBox's D-PAD because it lacks tactile response, what are they going to say about the iPhone?
- doctordbx, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1Tactile response is an important part of gaming.
- dhVyse, on 07/17/2008, -9/+1PFFFFT Nintendo DS > Sony PSP thank you very much. Just recently I've put about 70 hours into Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and STILL GOING.
- Tahiri, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I love FFTA 1 and 2, but play Jeanne d'Arc and you'll think Square should have tried harder.
DS is in no way > PSP.
- Tahiri, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1I love FFTA 1 and 2, but play Jeanne d'Arc and you'll think Square should have tried harder.
- fani, on 07/17/2008, -1/+9Idiotic writers give rise to idiotic articles.
Buried. PSP is alive and well with some great games I enjoy. Nice looking/playing GTA anyone ? Patapon ? VT3 ? - AparoidX, on 07/17/2008, -1/+8The iPhone doesn't even have buttons! BUTTONS! How can it outclass the PSP in the gaming aspect? You can only go so far with motion sensing (which isn't exactly precise) and multi-touch surface when it comes to developing games.
And it's not like Apple has some well-known and loved franchises to back them up, either. Sony has Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, MGS, and tons of other great franchises to keep the system rolling. Apple has the type of games you'd play on a train ride, but nothing hardcore.
And Spore? Sure, it's looking to be great game and all, but just because PSP doesn't have it, doesn't mean the entire system is going to lose to Apple's product. msaleem, this is the 2nd topic that's made popular by you that I think is ridiculous. How much are you paying Digg? - Yage2006, on 07/17/2008, -0/+8I am really getting tired of these iphone will kill the ds/psp articles.
First off the nintendo ds or the psp wont cost you 2000+$ over the next 2 years.
The ipod touch should be given more credit if any to this theory because it costs allot less.
Secondly Though the touchscreen and accelerometers are nice many types of games are not going to be well executed on it.
Lastly in regard to the psp I have yet to see anything as nice looking as wipeout pulse or god of war just to name a few running on it nor do I doubt it can handle it.
It's a nice device and all but stop blowing it out of proportion.

- SirRigby, on 07/17/2008, -0/+4First of all, if anyone has seen the Spore for the iPhone, its pretty much FlOw with a Spore skin. What is that going to do? Nothing. Noone here needs to go into detail about the obvious things like when I buy a PSP for $169 I am done. The iPhone 3G costs $2000 over 2 years. Or how the iPhone doesn't have buttons so it is really only suited to casual games and not necessarily full gaming experiences. Buried for utter stupidity.
- TheBlackLotus, on 07/18/2008, -1/+0Again, the Iphone DOES have buttons. and just because it doesn't have buttons that you would use 'for gaming', doesn't mean it has to get bashed for such.
- Almadiel, on 07/17/2008, -0/+5Uhuh, and playing fast action games on a device where your hand covers half the screen is a lot of fun. And the accelerometer has pretty low response times. 90% of the games on PSP would be unplayable on it. Hell, even most DS games would be unplayable despide the similarities in interface.
- Fallout911, on 07/17/2008, -5/+4***** the iPhone the only thing it's good for is to jack off in the bathroom.
- Gee1004, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1and bring out the iPhone haters that can't use the filter
- username7410, on 07/17/2008, -1/+2Really? Going have to try this. Ever since buying it I've been trying to figure out what its actually good for. Jacking off in the bathroom, noted.
- NCg8r, on 07/18/2008, -0/+0You know... you don't HAVE to go into the bathroom to utilize this functionality.
- Fallout911, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1When you have a wife you do.
- shiben, on 07/17/2008, -2/+5seriously who all digged this crap? 273 people? some Iphone owners?
dudes, ur phone rox, it does really, but it doesnt mean u digg meaningless articles.
Ask urself, what is the connection between "owner of a good phone" and "meaningless article digger".. you got it rite, there is no connection... and thus, don't digg such articles plz - mnsisgreen, on 07/17/2008, -1/+14Next on Digg: The iPhone heals cancer, study shows; Global warming solved thanks to the iPhone; (insert whatever gadget name here) has it's days numbered, watch out for the iPhone; Funny: cat tries to unlock iPhone (I CAN HAS IPHONE);

- bungoman, on 07/17/2008, -0/+6Seeing as how the PSP is still selling thousands of units a week in Japan and that the Japanese don't give a ***** about the iPhone I'm gonna go ahead and say that this is *****.
- FredFredrickson, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4The iPhone isn't going to kill the PSP.
I've felt like buying a PSP from time to time (I already own a DS), but every time I'm about to take the plunge, I stop and ask myself why I want it, and I can't really answer that question.
I don't really want it for games - the DS has got me mostly covered there, and the thought of the batteries dying a quick death at the hand of a spinning UMD doesn't thrill me.
I've got an iPod, so I don't need it for music.
I might be interested in the mobile internet, but without any touch controls, typing on it sounds like the *****, and I don't have wireless at my apartment, so I wouldn't use it for that at home.
UMD movies just make me laugh.
So I'm stuck on the fence. I like having new gadgets now and then, and I wouldn't mind playing with a PSP, especially as far as the homebrew stuff goes, but... well... yeah. The iPhone definitely isn't going to kill the PSP though. I mean, wouldn't the original iPhone have done that already, if this really were the case?- TiE23, on 07/18/2008, -0/+2You'll need to find games that you're interested in. It's all about the games first. The other things are just great extra perks.
- Zippo, on 07/17/2008, -1/+5As much as I like the iPhone/touch, it's not a gaming console and will not be able to compete with even the PSP.
- Owwmykneecap, on 07/17/2008, -2/+7Hahahaha, the single dumbest iphone spam yet.
well done. - dning88, on 07/17/2008, -1/+1I don't know about you but I'm brushing the dust off my PSP when Gran Turismo comes out for the hand held.
- slickrate, on 07/17/2008, -1/+4This is pretty silly. Tilting and tapping will never replace physical buttons on a handheld gaming console. Furthermore a gimped version of a home console game will never kill any platform.
- getatmedigg, on 07/17/2008, -1/+7shenanigans
- Changa, on 07/17/2008, -10/+2They still make the PSP?
- Kbiscu1t, on 07/17/2008, -2/+4The PSP's huge homebrew community will keep the PSP alive.
- LucerinRed, on 07/17/2008, -0/+7I"m sorry, but for active gaming, I like Buttons,.Touch screen and tilt sensitivity are great, but it wont' be a major gaming device along the levels of DS and PSP. This is why the DS didn't go without them.
- jacksons98, on 07/18/2008, -0/+1This reminds me of about 10 years ago when everyone was saying Palm handhelds were going to be the next big thing in gaming. I agree, lack of buttons or controls really limit what developers can do in terms of gaming.
