Death Cure Found! At least for the Xbox 360

- hugznotthugzkid, on 10/11/2007, -103/+27Too bad it's only a temporary fix. Your best bet would be to use the towel trick and trade it in at Gamestop or EB to get some credit for it.
- charlescheese, on 10/11/2007, -14/+71If you're an unethical douche bag, that's what you'd do anyway.
- SfOwnsLa, on 10/11/2007, -34/+44Instead of a story on how to sorta fix a console, it would be great if M$ could make better long-lasting consoles.
- Ransomowris, on 10/11/2007, -4/+28There are a lot of problems which cause this red ring of death. This fix can't posssible fix all of them.
- schoate09, on 10/11/2007, -55/+10My fix: Toss it and get a PS3.
- Seifey, on 10/11/2007, -12/+43What is the "towel trick"?
Digg me down if this is a stupid question. - salmonmoose, on 10/11/2007, -3/+37I gather you wrap the 360 in a towel, switch it on, and let it burn out.
- gxcdesign, on 10/11/2007, -13/+21This is getting pathetic...our brand new Xbox 360 console at Best Buy to show off Guitar Hero 2 is already dead...and it's been used since the game has been out..why can't they design a reliable console?!
- supafuzz, on 10/11/2007, -4/+8http://thexboxdomain.net/2007/01/15/the-towel-trick-fixes-360s/
- PathDaemon, on 10/11/2007, -4/+14Beating the hell out of it only works with Wiis.
Seriously, I've fixed one permanently with that. - DeathBorn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+25OH MAN! I thought this article was about finding a cure for death. Then I realized, "fixing the 360? Way more important."
- Enixyle, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4The blogger did not 'discover' this trick, as stated in the description.
- kai05yang, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15@"This is getting pathetic...our brand new Xbox 360 console at Best Buy to show off Guitar Hero 2 is already dead...and it's been used since the game has been out..why can't they design a reliable console?!"
there is some stupid law in the U.S. that bans the sell of solder with lead to stuff sold to kids. so M.S. had to use unproven solder without lead to connect the gpu and cpu to the board.
speak to ur congressman, and tell him that this law is stupid, if kids want to eat lead solder and become "special", he/she should have the right to do so; this is a FREE country after all. - dbblondon, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3I had the 3 red lights, was advised to do this by a friend as what happens is the motherboard warps when it gets hot and the solder for the GPU pins melts and the chip pops out. If you bake it like this then the solder melts completely and the connections are re-made. To be honest it didn't work for me probably as I only left it in there for 8 mins.
- Lazerous, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13That's really the grand fix? You pay 400 dollars for something that stops working mysteriously, and to fix it....you wrap it in a towel? I love Gears of War and Dead Rising as much as the next guy, but seriously? A towel? I'm glad mine doesn't have that ring yet.
What's next?
"When the towel trick doesn't work, set up speakers on all sides of the 360 and play 'Head like a hole' by Nine Inch Nails backwards 7 times consecutively. Then, before turning your 400 dollar xbox360 back on, flip it upside down and cover the bottom with quarters. Hit the power button and voila!!!" - coit, on 10/11/2007, -0/+6All I can say is: Thank god for COSTCO!
Just exchanged mine for a new (and quieter) one yesterday. POS was not even 4 months old when I got the red ring of incompetent manufacturing. - droversoul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Death cure eh? Phoenix down?
- zoomtechtv, on 10/11/2007, -69/+12XBOX 360 is made out of dog crap!!!
- nousemerk, on 10/11/2007, -16/+62hahahah...please people, don't bash a respectable gaming device. I am a fan of the PS3 but I do think that the Xbox 360 does offer some great games and great features.
- nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -41/+14no, he's saying it's a good system, it's a shame it was made out of dog crap, it's terrible for the components. Seriously, no one can deny that they made the 360 kinda crappily, they shouldn't be failing this often (I'm on my 3rd)
- snakeplisskin, on 10/11/2007, -32/+10A ps3 fan, we will find a cure for you someday
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -25/+103OH, JESUS. Again, MS has less than 3% failure. They've said this publicly (corporations get sued into oblivion, the SEC cuts off yer nuts and other serious consequences of such malfesense if you are dishonest in your financials about such things (like, say, "the "Warrenty costs" item on their ***** financial filings etcetc) -- so, anyway, its about 3% failure -- in line with electronics of this type.
Why all the fuss on this website? Because maligning MS is a digg pastime. It "helps" apple (how, i dont know). It "helps" Nintendo (how, I dont know). So, MS has 12,000,000 (ish) in the hands of users for something more than 12 months. Thats like 300,000 expected failed -- and apparently every one of them is here on Digg?
What about the 11,700,000 users *NOT* on Digg saying "oh, my console is broken"? They're not.
Want more personal anecdotal information? I've bought 4 units. 2 I have (premiums both). 2 in for my nephews. All for 10-ish months. NOT ONE has had so much as a blip - no crashes, not a single issue. Dead. Rock. Solid. Just like the other 97+% of XBox 360 owners, the other 11,700,000 Completely Trouble Free XBox 360s.
Im thinking instead of "nreynolds" having had 3 Xbox 360s, Im thinking he has a PS*3*. - nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -34/+12what is that supposed to mean? I was saying 360 is a good system, but made poorly, which is pretty much a factual statement. PS3 is also a good system, but it was made higher quality (in terms of break-ing-ness).
- wageslaven, on 10/11/2007, -12/+23@nreynolds
"What does it mean"? I think it means that you'll find the PS3 has just as much failure (ie; Sony and Microsoft has no more or less ability to make "quality" electronics. 15 months from now, and/or when there are 12,000,000 consoles in the public, how many failures will there be? Unless Sony is some kind of magic company, it will be roughly 3%. Foxconn, ASUSTeK for SCEI makes the PS3. Just like MS, these are contract assembly shops (except SCEI obviously)...
There are plenty of PS3s with broken disc loaders. Others have mysterious screaming high-pitched whines. Others have been shipped just totally Dead-on-Arrival. _OF_COURSE_ there are going to be failures. - nreynolds, on 10/11/2007, -20/+16damn, ran out of time on edit.
@ wageslaven
I own a PS3, a 360, and a Wii, and I love the first two. I'll have to wait for some games to come out on Wii.
Also, where did you get that 3%? Maybe that's the new figure but of launch 360's it's much higher. My first one died after 2 months, got my next one for free because it was under warranty. That one died 5 months later and at first they wouldn't replace it because it only had a 90 day warranty but then they realized that 360's were breaking at a much higher rate than they should and gave everyone a 1-year warranty. But I don't hate 360 at all, I play it much more often than my PS3 (and will continue to do so until more games come out), I just hate that they didn't build a high-quality system (at least at first).
Despite what the number actually is, it's much larger than the failure rate of PS3 or Wii. We don't hear any stories of people's PS3's breaking (mines doing just fine) like we did for 360's.
UPDATE: would you like to wager that PS3 will have a lower failure rate? At this point in the 360's life cycle (when there were less 360's in customer's hands than there are PS3's now, yes, PS3 is outselling 360 in terms of lifecycle) we were hearing TONS of stories of broken 360's. Where are the thousands of stories of broken PS3's?
damn, why am I wasting my time with you? - quomen, on 10/11/2007, -9/+37fanboys are all douchebags.
- arbiterxero, on 10/11/2007, -11/+6you're missing the point. They have 3% failure within the warranty period which is what, 90 days?
The problem with ALL of them is that they know they're going to screw up, you just gotta make sure that it lasts the 90 day warranty.
3% in 90 days? I think I've only ever bought one thing that failed within 90 days and it was a quantum hard drive. 3% is a huge number considering the cost (TV's have at least a year warranty if not more and probably still hit below 3%)
Boo to melty 360's....not that I expect PS3's to be much better. It's all crap made by laborers that make less money than my shoes are worth.
Boo-urns. - DanaLL, on 10/11/2007, -20/+3Worst. Console. Ever.
- NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -5/+35So let me get this straight...
Person A says: Be reasonable. Everything has some kind of failure rate.
Person B says: Yeah, but MY experience sucks, therefore it's a piece of garbage.
*The universe takes note of faulty syllogism #1*
Person C inserts thoughtless fanboy comment
Person D offers thoughtful logic on what the failure rate is, and notes the same as Person A - failures are expected.
Person B says: Yeah, but MY experience still sucked. Therefore, you're wrong.
*Universe notes second faulty syllogism*
Cycle continues until Person E interjects with a simple statement (fanboys are douchebags) that conveys three principles:
1. Arguing on the internet is pointless. In the end, no one cares.
2. Defending a specific console based on how much the other one sucks is pretty much the dumbest stance to take (politicians take note).
3. Pick something and stick with it because you like it, not because its predecessor did well or poorly.
You get the idea.
I hope this simplified view will help reveal how foolish all of this is. - Puffball, on 10/11/2007, -9/+3@nsmike
Don't you care? Or would you really be responding with this long comment on digg about fanboyism if you didn't? I care enough to get my point across with anonymous people just for the record, really.
And, 3% is a normal failure rate for a console, but why has the apocalypse started with the red ring of death? Where are all the hundreds of ***** up PS3 youtube videos? Why do more people I know *just so* happen to have dead consoles? It was pretty bad when the PS2 first launched, and yes, the PS3, as well as most, have their share of problems, especially at launch, but 1-2 years after its launch, even a 3% sounds a bit low for a console that's had its issues discussed on numerous tech sites, podcasts, and even magazines -- not just digg itself -- about it's failure. Seriously, what nreynolds is saying isn't too unreasonable, Microsoft used shoddy parts to build its console -- maybe to cut costs? Who knows! - ravage386, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9@nsmike
A golf clap for you, my good sir. - NSMike, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3@Puffball -
See my previous comment, principle #1.
- MaximusPaynicus, on 10/11/2007, -18/+14I love the 360. Hell, I have to -- I write for the site. But I will admit that the consoles ARE made rather cheaply.
- Brereton55, on 10/11/2007, -3/+11At least the repair center is decent well it was for me at least
- partyfavor, on 10/11/2007, -5/+1yeah now they r good, they even send u a box to ship it in

- zweben, on 10/11/2007, -6/+9Anyone have any idea why this works?
- Icebird, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6The heat re-solders points in the 360. Isn't it obvious?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/11/2007, -0/+9You should never be without your towel.
- beastlykings, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1did duggmirror get it?
- Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10From what i have heard the reason for the majority of failures is that the heat from the CPU causes the PCB to wark slightly and the BGA solder points come loose. This is remarkably similar to what happened with some apple laptops (i think it was the G3 iBook). The solution there was to heat the chip to the point that the solder points reconnected. Since the page is down now i have no way to see what the fix for the 360 is. Am i even close?
- hbeierg, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7I think that as something to do with it and the solder points disconnecting. my brother has fixed a mac book by taking a butane torch to it to fix the problem
- heme11, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0good tip!
- knodi, on 10/11/2007, -4/+15You can just call support. All Xbox 360 have a year warranty. If out of the year warranty they fix it for $75.
- dRuNk3nIrIsHmEn, on 10/11/2007, -0/+13$140

- englishganxta, on 10/11/2007, -10/+4Yeah, connect the xbox to the TV...
Seriously, I got a red ring because it was not connected and as soon as I connected it, it disappeared.- zzz@tkz, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2That's a different light pattern. They're kinda like DOS beeps, each one has its own meaning...
- phoque, on 10/11/2007, -1/+9You meant BIOS beeps.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5That's 4 lights. 3 lights is what you need to be worried about..
- yensed, on 10/11/2007, -1/+4Here is a video I found on youtube:http://youtube.com/watch?v=hjjinHmEoss
The one posted in the article was much better and was also on youtube. But I can't seem to find it. - Xpoc, on 10/11/2007, -2/+6There are several reasons why the 360's have been breaking. My guess that this fix will only work on the consoles that have warped mobo's because of the deat. Because the mobo warps, it often disconnects the GPU from it's heat sink. There was also a nifty fix that required opening up the console and placing small erasers under the mobo to push it back together with the heat sink.
I love my 360 but I will admit that it is not built too well. Some friends and I won 6 of them back before launch in the hex 168 contest. Out of the six that we won, 4 of them have failed so far. by my count, that's a 66% failure rate. Although I doubt it is this high in actuality, it is definitely higher than 3%. That number applied to launch.- Xpoc, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Whoops, forgot to say that us was the towels that must heat the 360 up enough to a point where the mobo warps again to come back into contact with the GPU heat sink. Seems like a nifty trick and I might try it if my second console dies.
- frygar, on 10/11/2007, -20/+3That 3% failure is a bald-faced lie and you're a shill for repeating it. The 360 has a worse track record than the gen 1 PS2 and it's not improving any - that's saying a lot (especially since, unlike my 360, I'm still on the same PS2 I bought launch day). My fix? Buy a PS3 and/or a Wii. They're both better in terms of games, graphics and durability, and if enough people start voting with their pocketbook -maybe- MS will get the idea that chewing gum and hamster wheels do not a sturdy console make.
- HP844182, on 10/11/2007, -5/+20The Wii is better at graphics than the 360?
- Icebird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+14Did you just say the PS3 is better in terms of games? And that the Wii is better in graphics? ......
- TheProtested, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2if people are voting with their pocket books...wont the 360 be winning?
- handheldchimp, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Anyone have a mirror? The site is down :p
- HaxorTheWorld, on 10/14/2007, -6/+2My 360 has never overheated, then again, that's probably because I don't ***** ABUSE it. I keep it in a nice open area, and give it decent ventilation (window). The only time I got the red rings of death is when I kicked the cord. Even then, I still just turned it off then back on and it works.
- zzz@tkz, on 10/14/2007, -0/+6...they're not all "rings of death". They're the console's way of displaying errors.
- someguy9, on 10/11/2007, -12/+2http://duggmirror.com
- StingerMS, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7Why do people always do that?
- frygar, on 10/11/2007, -17/+2The Wii is better than the 360. The NES is better than the 360.

Is there a mirror somwhere? - orlyfactor, on 10/11/2007, -2/+3Erkel fixed my xbox!!
- Dialsoft, on 10/11/2007, -8/+6I own a video game store and would like to share some information. Id say the 360 breaks the most in the current generation. I had 2 personal machines break. One is the store demo machine and one is mine at home. PLus my partners broke and a friend of mines broke. As far as the ps3 goes, none broken from any of my customers but then again the PS3 doenst sell. Its considered a flop in the industry. Im lucky to sell 2 consoles a month. I fix more ps2s and sell more ps2s as replacement machines than anything. The wii controllers are often dead on arrival, the consoles sometimes have hard times with gamecube games. Which machine is best? Well for the family and for people who want great interactivity amongst local console players, Id say the Wii. For those interested in playing real hardcore games with excellent global gameplay and excellent graphics and great controllers, The xbox 360. For those of you who want to play ps2 games, get a ps3.
Marc- Ctrice, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Did any of you take a step back and realize just how ridiculious it is that you're having to fix a 400 dollar console with a ***** towel? If you can shrug that off and still manage to convince yourself that the 360 isn't shoddily made then congratulations, you're a fanboy.
Oh and that "Hey none of my friends have trouble with their 360's so there's no possible way that this could be happening to a significant amount of people." ***** just doesn't fly. Microsoft tells you it's only 3%, and you're quite happy to believe that. Until it happens to you.

I'm not saying that you are a fanboy. I Just like the picture. - gravelocity, on 10/11/2007, -3/+2I agree with the 360 problems. I am another soul who had the ring of death, and it sucks because it was past the warranty period. I love some of the games on the 360, but i feel like the Next Gen consoles are not as good as they SHOULD BE. When is the last time that a truly great game has come along? and don't say Gears Of War because if you stack it up to Goldeneye when it came out for the N64 GEARS doesn't even come close.
Maybe the PS3 will have some promise in the near future when it's price drops.- eezzzz, on 10/11/2007, -6/+3You're in big trouble now dude... NEVER (!!) bring up Goldeneye here! Halo invented the good console FPS damnit!
- cebbs, on 10/31/2007, -6/+4Funny how none of my friends or I have had any problems with our 360s
- Mars10, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I try this trick but i just cant get it to work. As soon as i turn on the 360, which is plugged into the TV, the lights start flashing and then the fans spin up and then the power brick, which normally shows a green light when the Xbox is on, goes yellow and the box never produces any heat. Any Ideas?
- HeatVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No one I knew had a console die, then a friend's console went down and 3 weeks later my brother-in-law's console broke as well.
Suddenly out of the 8 people I know in real life that have 360s, 2 of them had their consoles bricked, and I realized that this is what people have been bitching about.
- HeatVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2No one I knew had a console die, then a friend's console went down and 3 weeks later my brother-in-law's console broke as well.
- rooftopsuicide, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0i just bought my first 360 last week. it doesn't even say premium on the box anymore. is that new? i'm keeping a tower fan on high next to it every time it's on to help dissapate heat (it does get pretty hot.) i've always been a PC gamer, and i hope i got a 'good' xbox. if it does get the 3rlod's, however, i'm totally trying this. i love taking stuff apart anyway. thanks for posting this.
- handheldchimp, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Ya, everyone i know has not had a problem with their 360's...so either everyone here is making up stories about going through mass amounts of them, or my friends dont talk in person anymore, rather on xbox live :)

- Crash87, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0I've had my 360 overheat before, but it doesn't turn off because it's broken. It has a heat sensor inside and turns itself off to prevent damage. I rearranged my setup to get it more airflow and it's fine now.
- ratboy4001, on 10/11/2007, -1/+1All I see here is a bunch of "blah blah blah"...."this is better than that"...."stop bitchin, its true"..."yadda yadda yadda"...
Stop bitching and starting playing, thats what I'm doing.
*Disclaimer: This comment is not for those users who commented but did not bitch. - raiderj, on 10/11/2007, -0/+11I have successfully fixed a 360 with the red rings. The problem is partly due to the X-clamps, and partly due to a poor heatsink/fan shroud design. Essentially, the clamps cause a slight bend in the board, which coupled with poor heat dissipation on the GPU, leads to desoldered connections and the red rings.
The fix that I did took $5 in nuts and bolts from Lowe's, and $0.10 in aluminum tape. Replaced the X-clamps with the bolts, then placed some aluminum tape over the CPU/GPU to allow the fan shroud to pull air over the entire heatsink. Now the system runs great and pulls out much more hot air. Ever pulled out a game disc that feels like it's on fire? That's due to the poor fan shroud. With the fix, the discs are just barely warm to the touch.
Say what you will, but MS really designed the cooling system poorly. If they had made the shroud big enough to cover the entire heatsink, you'd not see any of these failures.- rogue352, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Still rather sad that you technically modded your console to fix the problem.. why microsoft couldnt have done all this themselves is beyond our knowledge.
- mike17032, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I gotta say that the 360 isnt the most durable, thats for sure. I have had just about every game system ever made, and NEVER had one die on me. Even the ones I abused the ***** out of. But my 2nd 360 just died, and they have been treated like gold. Never moved, well ventalted, ect.
If it breaks right around the time they do a daskboard update, you can use that as an excuse to get it fixed for free. So at least its not costing me anything more than a few weeks without my system.
I do love the thing though, other than breaking its an awsome system. - elcaminos, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now if I could only get the 3 rings on purpose, I could use my best buy warranty to send it in and get an elite 360.
- gweedo767, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Want three rings? Fine, Towel fix your non-broken Xbox360. Most likely you will pop those solder points!
- Darkrageofwar, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1if you look at one of the original our colony videos, the 360 was supposed to have liquid cooling. this coupled with the fact that the system was supposed to run 65-nm chips shows that MS pushed the envelope with the heat design specs. whether this was for cost issues or simply because they needed to make more systems at the launch, clearly the current design doesn't reflect that of the original engineering.
Now i love my 360. for all of the reasons stated above (by others) and before, but i know of 4 different people that are on their 3rd or higher failure, two others who have seen their console fail, and i myself saw my console fail. if you read anandtech i think all of the writers there have had their systems fail. hell one of the Forza Motorsport devs on their message boards said "you systems about to die"[paraphrase] to someone who's system shutdown when they played the demo a few days ago.
Like i said i love my 360, but i have to say that im kinda scared to play it.
Should i really be this worried about a console that i payed 400 for. (also i shelled out 400 more for the second) - AVigorVermin, on 10/11/2007, -2/+11Are you guys seriously saying the 360 does not fail that often? Think about it...Microsoft installed a red ring of DEATH so that when it fails...you know about it. What other console manufacturer has spent money on letting people know when their product breaks?

That comment was not only true, but ***** hilarious as well. Couldn't have said it better myself. - HeatVision, on 10/11/2007, -0/+8Actually, I think it's really smart to have diagnostic lights on the 360. Dell has it on their computers, it's damn handy if you have to fix those things.
- TDR25, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6@avigorvermin
- JustinZz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I thought this was all BS; until my friend's 360 bought in dec died this month
and it was very well ventilated with nothing around it in a 2 foot radius
...but my launch 360 is still fine?- Icebird, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have a launch 360 that's fine too, but two of my friends with launch 360s got the rings of death and the only difference in use from them to me was that they always had their 360 vertically oriented. I've always had mine horizontal, but I doubt that has anything to do with anything.
- XdigitalXdeathX, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1I have one launch system, and one system circa December 06
Both of them work. Launch system has never had any problems (besides dust in the heat sink = major overheating prob, but fine after cleaned) and I keep both 360s vertically oriented.
- DELTAsnake, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1THis has been knowen about for a while now. Old news.
- juicys, on 10/11/2007, -0/+4i thought this conversation was supposed to be about the article. maybe i was wrong?
- TocsinFilms, on 10/11/2007, -2/+2Alright how is this news? This was found out OVER a year ago! You people are acting like it's something amazing, when he even wrote "when the towel trick idea came up..." This is ***** lame. It's old! Anybody who has a Xbox 360 and had the lights like I did would have search and found the towel trick. It's not something spectacular.
- innocentsinner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0This isn't about the towel trick
- innocentsinner, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Ah crap, digg me down. I assumed mcatrage's was the main story -.-
- gwolf, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1It's news because I have never heard of it.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2This has been known for a while, im surprised it made to to the front page.
However, another fix was discovered, I saw a post about it on the GameFaqs forums. So far people have gotten their 360 that were dead to work and stay working for months with this, but it will void your warranty. Basically it involves opening up the 360 and replacing clamps on the heatsinks with screwes. Apparently the reason it eventually dies is the clamps don't hold after a while and the heatsink falls out of place.

/sarcasm - nhprm, on 10/11/2007, -1/+2Does no one else love that he says he 'got a chubby' when he saw the green?
- SharkyTech, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1The fact that this trick works on these 360s makes me think that at least some of these problems might be caused by moisture, and heating the console in this way causes the moisture to evaporate. Just a thought, but it seems a better explanation than the cold-solder theory, as the reports seem to be that the console will still turn on after its been allowed to cool down.
- AcidCrashX, on 10/11/2007, -3/+0i just kicked mine.. seemed to work after that
- Sarzec, on 10/11/2007, -2/+1Ive had a 360 since January and it works fine. I had it crash once playing Lost Planet but that's it.
