Dan "Shoe" Hsu leaves the 1UP Network
joystiq.com — Dan "Shoe" Hsu, editorial director of Ziff Davis' 1UP Networks and former editor in chief of Electronic Gaming Monthly, announced today he will be leaving Ziff Davis. This is yet another in a long line of recent departures of top game journalists in the industry.

The exodus from Ziff Davis conitnues...
This sucks. Dan was awesome.- schizogony, on 04/12/2008, -3/+1Cnet and Ziff are just too big and too corporate to hold these talented people back.
- CommentPoster, on 04/12/2008, -2/+0Huh. Just a few hours ago I read "you're still stuck with me for some time to come!" in EGM. Granted it was November 2007's issue, but still.
- boarder4021, on 04/12/2008, -1/+34He was a very respectable editor and definitely earned the reputation of a notable magazine.
- r3m1x, on 04/12/2008, -1/+23My next issue of EGM won't be the same without Dan Hsu's mug. Yeah, Milky is the new EIC and all but the magazine still had that Dan Hsu stamp of approval.
Its hard to believe that two weeks ago, Dan was giving Fragile EAgle a hard time for leaving Ziff on EGM Live. Come next week, it'll be Dan's turn to give a farewell on EGM Live. Happy trails Dan Dan Fan Fan Hsu Hsu *winks* - Kobskid, on 04/12/2008, -2/+7Dan was a great editor, he will be missed and I hope he enjoys his time off.
- Charlieuk, on 04/12/2008, -15/+2wonder if someone will give him one in the gut?
- viewdrix, on 04/12/2008, -1/+26He was always, somehow, recognizable and likable in the usually bland gaming journalism crowd. I especially liked his editorials calling for integrity throughout the industry while exposing the seedier aspects.
I don't know. I liked the guy. He just seemed like a cornerstone and a constant.
He'll be missed.- terminal157, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1Hear ye, hear ye.
- Jenadae, on 04/12/2008, -2/+5Aww man hes been around since I was a kid. I never had a set editor I liked but if anyone asked I would've said him.
- mlwarrior, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1Yeah, I started reading EGM in 1992, and I remember the issue that he arrived, and I really liked him. He's one of the only guys I can remember off the top of my head besides sushi-x and his street fighter glory. Hope he's OK.
- Klisk, on 04/12/2008, -3/+19*****. I just subscribed to EGM *yesterday* because of Hsu.
- viewdrix, on 04/12/2008, -1/+7He left the EGM Editor-in-Chief position to become the 1UP Site Director back in January.
- piratearggghhh, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4I met Dan at the 360 launch party and he was a great guy (with a hot gf). I always respected him as an straight-shooter. I remember his controversial piece with sponsor money and other editors selling out. I'm sure he'll find success whereever he goes.
- distrachi, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1pics or it didn't happen.
- Dagreenman, on 04/12/2008, -2/+9This is a huge loss. But, he's moving on to bigger things. He will be missed from 1up, but we will see him again. Here's hoping his next great endevor is as awesome as his time with Ziff Davis.
ps: If Jeff Green goes, we are *****.- schizogony, on 04/12/2008, -4/+10If Jeff Green goes, I'm absolutely through with 1up and all its podcasts.
- UConnBBall, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1DON'T Say It!
- littlelives, on 04/12/2008, -2/+4Aww dang. For real? He's one of the personalities in the field I actually had respect for. I felt all of his editorials were spot on about the industry. Watching the podcast and reading the magazine is going to start to feel different, but I wish him luck in whatever it is he wishes to pursue in life.
- haterofps3, on 04/12/2008, -2/+6Is this the old guard leaving while we get the new marketing guys. I have a feeling that the market will suffer and we will see a lot of ***** games getting 10/10!
- sgtpppr, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3It's called free market. If sites give biased or ***** reviews, stop going there. I promise you'll see a change when their page views take a dive and they can't afford their swanky downtown SF offices.
- Tempest261, on 04/12/2008, -17/+3Dan seemed like a nice enough guy, but his reviews were horrible. Remember his Gears of War review? Perfect 10... and then he went on to explain everything wrong with it.
Good riddance. - Daggity, on 04/12/2008, -4/+3Who is John Galt?
- LUElinks, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Why do people say this?
It doesn't mean anything.- Daggity, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Read Atlas Shrugged, and you'll know exactly what it means.
- LUElinks, on 04/14/2008, -0/+2I was trying to capture the spirit of dagney taggard and her initial confusion about John Galt.
- metric7, on 04/13/2008, -0/+2google?
- Daggity, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Read Atlas Shrugged, and you'll know exactly what it means.
- LUElinks, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Why do people say this?
- kratos, on 04/12/2008, -22/+4***** him that guy was a douche. Who really cares he left
- terminal157, on 04/12/2008, -2/+5I care.
- killbert24, on 04/12/2008, -1/+4Wow. This is actually sad. I remember when I was young and would collect my EGM mags and read through them over and over. Shoe was always one of my favorite reviewers/writers. Then he moved to 1up and I kind of followed him there, but now he has truly left to pursue new things. The end of an era. We all move on I suppose. Good luck Shoe!!!
- kratos, on 04/12/2008, -21/+3Why would anybody be sad? Do people still actually read EGM how old are you?
- Klisk, on 04/12/2008, -1/+6I know you're just trolling, but I'm over 30 and I read EGM.
Oh, and so y'know, magazines are still in the lead for gaming news. Yeah, even superior to the internet. They get exclusives and news straight from the source, something most online sites don't get at all yet.
- Klisk, on 04/12/2008, -1/+6I know you're just trolling, but I'm over 30 and I read EGM.
- Jeffler, on 04/12/2008, -4/+4Doubt it, but could he be joining the ex-Gamespotee's at Giant Bomb?
- dhVyse, on 04/12/2008, -9/+2Who?
- albotasinc, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3Wow... sucks. He was a huge inspiration to me and his integrity is part of what drives me as a journalist. Good luck, buddy.
- kratos, on 04/12/2008, -11/+3Oh my god how could this happen. I love Shoe so much what am I going to do now. This is the saddest day in my life. Now who am I supposed to jerk off to!?!? I am so sad for real.
- killbert24, on 04/12/2008, -2/+0Two words: Brian Lam.
- Repeater2000, on 04/12/2008, -3/+11Look at Neogaf's thread.. pathetic. Admins and mods encouraging their fanbase to bash and ridicule a man who has dedicated a good chunk to EGM.
- troopa, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2NeoGAF as a whole is pathetic. When I look at their off-topic discussions, they all sound like a bunch of retards.
- DarkoKun, on 04/12/2008, -11/+3R.I.P he will be missed.
- Thorpe, on 04/12/2008, -5/+1He's dead?
- indiancompanion, on 04/12/2008, -3/+3no
- Thorpe, on 04/15/2008, -1/+1Someone doesn't understand sarcasm. *sigh*
- indiancompanion, on 04/12/2008, -3/+3no
- DarkoKun, on 04/12/2008, -3/+1Someone doesnt have to be dead to rest in peace.
- Thorpe, on 04/12/2008, -5/+1He's dead?
- GodsHand, on 04/12/2008, -9/+1Here is a video dedicated to Dan "Shoe" Hsu leaving... it was made a few years ago but it predicted the demise of EGM, the demise of Ziff Davis, and the demise of Jennifer Tsao.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OLlRp-WTREM- ryansimbalist, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1Who cares...Everyone leaves their job at some point
- terminal157, on 04/12/2008, -2/+2This is very much a sign of integrity being jettisoned from the industry. It's a terrible pity.
- killermk, on 04/12/2008, -1/+5Dan "Shoe" Hsu will be missed. One of the greatest editors out there, Ziff Davis will never be the same. I wish good luck with his future plans.
- UConnBBall, on 04/12/2008, -6/+1Dan should become a College Professor he would be an awesome one.
Look at the difference between 1up.com and gamespot.com on Alexia. Its a HUGE difference! Gamespot has never been more popular?????? What gives? I hope the GFW and Shu team up again to form a new gaming journalism company.- geoffg, on 04/12/2008, -5/+0It's called search.
- ryansimbalist, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Do some research before you post lame comments like these.
GFW is not leaving 1up, the print mag will shut down but they will continue putting article on the website.
Please never use the words gaming and journalism in the same sentence. "Gaming Journalism" is so infantile and poor it shouldn't be considered
- Thorpe, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1Damn. Seemed like a great job.
- ryansimbalist, on 04/12/2008, -3/+8These comments suck....so does mine.
- stevenk87, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2WTF? Shoe's awesome, this is too bad. I think he managed to steer EGM well during his tenure despite the rise of gaming sites. Thanks to him, EGM has complementary features and commentary that still make it relevant in the gaming industry despite the "dying" industry that is magazines. Hopefully the staff can continue the good work in his absence.
- tehbored, on 04/12/2008, -2/+3Oh man, Shoe is awesome. I hope EGM doesn't go down the toilet because of this.
- geoffg, on 04/12/2008, -5/+0It's always been about the games not the editorial staff.
- olbap, on 04/12/2008, -3/+4Awwwww maybe now he'll actually have to go out and get a real job. I kid! I kid!
- kingUssop, on 04/12/2008, -2/+2A big loss imo, gaming news is starting to slip off the precipice into total marketing *****, and he was one of the honest stalwarts against that.
- llllDrGONZOllll, on 04/12/2008, -2/+1This is a trend that will soon become more common. With the social sites like digg and the popularity of blog sites, magazines are having difficult time keeping their ***** together. Dan will no doubt do well no matter where he goes, and I wish the best of him. Any one who subscribes to gaming magazines knows that they are becoming thinner and thinner. With most articles I read I know most of the content. I do hope that Andy from Game Informer does not leave or I will be truly losing hope in medium of the magazine.
- thedez, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1** "price is right" fail music **
- martin993, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2Good luck to the guy. Anybody else feel like The 1up Show has lost a lot of its personality since that load of people left? It used to be quite funny and interesting even if they were talking about some boring looking games. Lately I don't watch it unless I'm interested in the games in the contents list.
That said, 1up Yours is still awesome. - bangerznmash, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2At least we still have jennifer tsao, and those two guys who kinda look alike.
- loves2spooge, on 04/12/2008, -1/+2Miss him already =(
- spartanblue, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1He will be missed.
- AtheismFTW, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1:(
- pwnerofnoobs, on 04/12/2008, -1/+3Good riddence. I never liked his faggy voice on the advertisement for EGM that plays during 1upyours and GFW podcast.
'Your the best around.. now sweep the legs.." that is annoying as ***** and its not funny. I believe the real reason he left was because of that ad. They were going to fire his ass for being pathetic. - Vash3001, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -Vader
- PinkFloydFan, on 04/12/2008, -0/+2Is it just me, or is EGM currently in a downward spiral? I've been a subscriber for 10+ years and the magazine seems like one big advertisement. PLUS they changed their ratings system last month from the 0-10 scale (which was great) and replaced it with an A,B,C, etc... scale that is completely lame and intended merely to mask games that would normally score a 6-7 and make them look better than they are. (The difference between a 6 and a 7 is clear, the difference between a C- and a C is not so much)
Dan, you will be missed, and unfortunately my long time relationship with EGM is coming to a close:(
On a side note, remember Sushi X? - metric7, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1yawn
- mistergoodburge, on 04/13/2008, -1/+1Talk about a midlife crisis...i just spent 11 years of my life playing videogames, time for the future
- jsin1276, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Well hopefully he is on to something new and better. Good luck to him.
- joser916, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1so does that mean my next issue of egm is gonna suck ass?
- trizzlelv, on 04/14/2008, -0/+1Awesome, maybe I can start subscribing to EGM again. Shu and his publication have sucked for many years... it will be good to get some fresh creativity in there and hopefully make a magazine worth reading again. Game Informer is by far the best video game mag out there right now.
- BubbaArmy420, on 06/12/2008, -0/+0whatever.... elitest socialist snob. maybe he can move to china or cuba where they love communists like him.
egm jumped the shark when they made a "succer" game game of the month. (rolling eyes) yeah, a succer game.... I bet madden sells more copies in 2 seconds after release than all the succer games the last 20 years combined.
