- TheAttacks, on 10/12/2007, -3/+25I lived there for 2+ years and never once saw an Xbox on sale, but I saw GameCube and PSX all over. . . I wasn't surprised either is what I'm saying.
- SmoothHeavy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24Interesting, but that doesn’t really come as a surprise considering how poorly the Xbox is selling in Japan.

- chad78, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23makes me want to buy a used 360 from Japan on the CHEAP
- grenz, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18yeah but the shipping would kill. ordering from Japan has its premiums for heavy stuff
- blankoboy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13I just walked back into my office from the Yodobashi Camera next door....there are Xbox 360's there. I saw plenty of Xboxes over the last few years here in Tokyo as well so I don't know what you are talking about.
Mind you no one is buying any..... - Arramol, on 10/12/2007, -5/+16Atomic, what does Sony have to do with this? DS Lite is Nintendo, X-Box 360 is Microsoft.
- Sleepingbag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11You don't think it's interesting that a handheld is worth more to a Japanese gamestore now than a technology-packed console that retails for nearly triple the price? Of course the DS's competition is the PSP; the Xbox shouldn't even be comparable to the handheld at all. But for whatever reasons it is, and the news is revealing of what people are looking for when buy gaming devices.
In Japan, anyways. - Alphabet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7you can't do that. The reason why the ds lite is selling more than retail price is because stores in japan are always sold out on ds lites. Remember those huge lines for xbox360 last christmas? Well, think of that, but in japan...everyday...for every shipment of ds lites.
Apparently, the shortage of ds lites in japan finally ended at the end of last month. The article is old too, the price of the ds trade-in probably fell to regular levels now.
edit:damnit, beaten to post by unfinity. - monofonk25, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Xbox360's were never hard to find in japan...
- unfinity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Because you can't get them - they're sold out pretty much everywhere there. That's why they're going for more than the MSRP - supply & demand.
- frontbrain, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5The large dependence on mass-transit in Japan probably increases the demand for portable games/video devices. Since most people in the USA drive, their eyes are occupied during travel and therefore the demand for portable games/video is reduced. Although when I visited Chicago a couple of times, where many people use mass-transit, it seems you don't see too many people with portable games, but a lot of iPods. This is probably because I was just within a couple miles of downtown so the ratio of walking time to bus/train time would be greater, therefore a device that does not occupy your eyes is desirable because of the more walking. I wonder if people on longer train rides are more likely to watch video/play games.
That is my random rambling analysis - slimemonster, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6How exactly do tariffs figure in higher trade-in value? The reason they have higher trade-in value is because they have a track record of being more reliable and longer-running than American cars, which makes Japanese used cars more desirable.
- matatabe, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4they are still about 34,000Yen with a hard drive in Japan, and they arent going to play the majority of US games....
- prockcore, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Interesting that this is the 3rd place I've seen this story, and none of them mention that the DS trumps the *PSP*'s trade-in price as well.
- fatwreck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@sprae: Your post is obviously based off something you heard 5-10 years ago when Japan had money during the bubble. I lived there for 3 years and never saw any of that stuff. Even on "big garbage" day. The odd playstation maybe, but nothing like what I expected after hearing the same rumor. Times are too tight there nowadays.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Because they're sold out.
The manufacturer suggested retail price is just that, suggested. Stores have probably realized they can easily make more money by marking things up a bit and prices are probably $50 worth of Yen above the MSRP.
Arg, beaten to the punch. I wish I took that typing class. - knupso, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4It's not because the 360 is a poor console, It doesn't have the games that the Japanese like to play. They also have a great national pride, so in general they will buy a inferior Japanese product over a superior foreign one.

I live in Paris, France, where a _lot_ of people use public transports. Usually you'll see a lot of iPods, but very, /very/ few portable gaming devices. If you see someone playing, 90% of the time it will not be a portable console, but some kind of next-gen cellphone.
But that's not too surprising in a country whose people have been voted the most _boring_ by a European-wide survey :P (take THAT, Molvania ! Er... wait... never mind.) - Sprae, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3You obviously haven't see the rubbish Japanese throw out on a daily basis. There are mobiles, TVs and all sorts of tech that's less then 6-month old. For a Xbox 360 buyer who could be throwing it out, its better than zero yen!
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sony>Nintendo>Microsoft?
Yeah, maybe it went that way the last 5 years. This time I see it going
Nintendo>Microsoft>Sony - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I thought that the 360 was region-free.
Checked. Guess not
But, their non-region coded games list is nothing to sneeze at, either:

Wait! Let me call the Nintendo marketing department over so they can take notes. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Xbox 360s are no longer hard to find and will only be over stocked...
- StarWarsFever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I actually just got back from visiting a friend in Tokyo. Let me tell you, it was damn near impossible to find a DL-Lite.... 'bout the only way i was able to find one was through my friend's girlfriend who had connections through the electronic store she worked in. Other than that, i never saw one new for sale. I did, however, see two Navy Blue Lites for 24,800 Yen used (about $220.00).... w/ an average trade in of 15,800 yen.... hell, even normal DS's were netting 12,000 yen for trade ins and it was hard enough to even find those. Sucks to be back in the states :(
- Scopitone, on 10/12/2007, -10/+11Yeah, they're also going to be the primary buyers of PS3...
Then again, it IS the DS Lite we're talking about and damn near everyone should own one. - shaun944, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The key point of this article: In Japan.
Japanese have never supported the x-box so its no surprise that trade values for a box that isn't in demand is low. Whoopdedoo... x360s are sold out over most of the rest of the world. Sales in Japan don't mean anything in terms of hardware or games, only that a completely different culture doesn't have the same reaction to a product. - rolandrs, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yeah thats why non of them use windows, or eat at mcdonalds, or watch american films...
ooh wait that must be why memories of a geisha went down so well there too. *ahem*
I live in the UK and the only person i know that has a 360 plays on his PS2 more. The japanese, like everyone else outside of america just won't buy a new console when there are better games out for older ones.
Take note - dreamcast games are still being bought in japan. - reidypeidy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a $25 difference, but yeah you're right, he should have used another word.
- Moocat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Mmm, xbox didn't do good in Japan to begin with, why would it suddenly be a big seller now? It's not like they came out with anything worth buying unless your a sports fanatic.
- toliman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1yep, only in japan. its akin to asking why US stores dont sell n-gage or coleco games. or gizmondo's.
xbox never took off because there are no super hyped games for the 360. thats not the real reason though, sony/nintendo are japanese companies, they have an impreganable brand loyalty associated with national pride and honor, excellent local support, a great range of games and a following that otaku would be insane to try to ignore. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2@ WalterDirt
I understand your failure to understand the mod trends of your own comments.
In the past I pinged two guys, one for using the word "Sike" in a post and the other for using the word "Not", as in "I'll give you $500, Not!!!" I haven't heard this ***** talk since the 80's.
The funny thing was, my comments about the idots using these words got modded down and the comments that had the words "Sike" and Not!!" in them got modded up.
Go figure.....I guess the majority of people on digg are dorks that think it's still cool to use words like this. - dshPls, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2trumped is the wrong verb for a $10 difference...
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is the trade-in price, not what a 2nd-hand one would sell for. Oh, and Japanese stuff may be exxy overseas, but not in Japan.
- piratearggghhh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1At this point I don't even think the blue dragon studio games will help much. They're just too particular there with specific types of games.
- mrjava241, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Well sucks for those Japanese who aren't buying such a great machine. They miss out on great stuff because of their nationalistic trends.
- nightchrome, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They're still sold out of DS lites everywhere. I've been trying to get one for awhile now. :(
- Stwo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I just don't get it
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1You've obviously never had yakisoba~ (The stuff proves they know something... :p )
- ikiryou, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"Nationalistic trends" for Japanese people are equal to "seeking the highest quality products available".
The Crashbox 360 unfortunately doesn't meet their high level of standards. - TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2That's because of tariffs.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2ook.. why not buy 1000 ds lites and trade them in.. sounds like a good way to make 10,000 dollars.. :p
- captainjy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2Who really cares, nimrod? Stop instigating and get a life.
- valan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1http://digg.com/gaming/DS_Lite:_Trade-in_value_eclipses_original_MSRP_and_Xbox_360_in_Japan
- Ilyanep, on 10/12/2007, -16/+5Another way to make a million dollars, anyone?
I think I'm going to patent this :P - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4SPLOOGE! ..wow, its even prettier now than it was before..
- T3rry, on 10/12/2007, -17/+5*FwaP*FwaP*DS lite*FwaP*FwaP*
- drakethegreat, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4I fail to see how they can sell them for that cheap unless the Japanese enjoy loosing money by buying them and then selling them for less then half their original value. I'm still skeptical because the Japanese are usually so good at over pricing everything, just look at Sony.
- b0rk, on 10/12/2007, -15/+3It's like cars. Trade in values of Japanese > American cars.
