DS Lite leading in Time's Gadget of the Year race
joystiq.com — The lil' guy appeared out of its league in Time's Gadget of the Year race, but [at the time of this writing] DS Lite is leading the online ballot with 44% of the vote -- 27 percentage points ahead of Apple's MacBook Pro.

- HOTM, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23What makes this story better is what Sony just said today.
http://www.maxconsole.net/?mode=news&newsid=11624- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Currently there are no M-rated games for the Nintendo DS.
For some reason I don't mind it at all. - Diggtatorship, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25DS is currently leading with 59%
If this hits front page, I predict the DS will hit 75% easily. - Dustyb, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27I'm 17 and I use my DS Lite as my main gaming console. So does the other 6 or 7 17 to 18 year olds that hang out with me every day and LAN on DS. Whatever Sony.
- somerandomnerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+29Me too, and I'm 29.
- scratched, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14Sony seems like they have their heads firmly jammed up their rear ends lately.
Look at all of the mistakes Sony has made over the past year.
I don't think Sony will go down completely, but they certainly are in a slump for the time being.
Nintendo FTW! - floridiot, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9News Source: pspfanboy
el-oh-el - Aaronichi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7This is what Nintendo has always done well, tapping the casual gaming market.
That's why it's going to be the Gadget of the Year in Time Magazine, not the PSP. - skyshock21, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Nintendo DS or MacBookPro???
{digg users' head asplodes} - blackhalobender, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8me too. 27.
- freakygeeky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11I use my DS almost every day and I'm 33.
- Drivas, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Hmmm. Strange how Sony talk ALL the time, and it's always the same thing? Personally, I like Nintendo's approach, which is to let the games and consoles speak for themselves.
- lemorex, on 10/12/2007, -4/+23Currently there are no M-rated games for the Nintendo DS.
- rschenkel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Hey! Who let Mac fanboys read this post?? DS is down to 57% at the time I voted...
It will be interesting to see how the digg effect will affect this poll. - Adoozie, on 10/12/2007, -1/+12Now THIS is the race I'm really interested in.
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Definitely a great gadget
- Soapdish, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0I voted for the DS Lite, because it's the one gadget I actually own.
However, I've wanted a Macbook for a while (since it was the iBook), and those two logitech devices look really cool.
I wonder if the mouse works with linux...- AbaraiRenji, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2the mouse works great on linux. i absolutely love this mouse, so im afraid its got my vote instead of the DS
- gweedo767, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9DS is at 57% with the Mac Book at 28%. I think it is winning :)
- stukdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3It makes it difficult for fans of Apple products because there are two items to vote for from Apple. I think they tried to split the vote.
(PS, the Sanyo camera definitely doesn't deserve my vote. I owned one for two days before it went back to Amazon. http://www.freemacblog.com/a-sanyo-hd1a-and-a-mac/ ) - cglive99, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Only thing that bugs me is the other gadgets in the race. Sure the MacBook is a great machine (don't own one but it's still a nice piece of hardware) but the DS is the only unique item. I've seen plenty of laptops and mice before. Ok done complaining now :p Go Nintendo!!
- Xarou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Man, the DS Lite here and Wii winning Popular Science's "Best of Whats New" for Home Entertainment. Will Nintendo ever lose!? Survey says: NO!
- 98acura, on 10/12/2007, -17/+3i voted for the macbook just to spite all you stupid nintendo fanboys
- totorototoro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Yeah, that will teach those "fanboys" a real lesson.
- DRawkus, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1I voted for the MacBook Pro. Intel + Apple = GOTY, imo.
- PixelCloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15but its just a laptop!!
it shouldn't even be on that list IMHO - DRawkus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+2Gadget = portable technology.
- MikeSD34, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9Merriam-Webster defines a gadget as "an often small mechanical or electronic device with a practical use but often thought of as a novelty"
http://m-w.org/dictionary/gadget
I would hardly call a laptop a novelty, but that's just my personal opinion.
- PixelCloud, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15but its just a laptop!!
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Hell, I'm as big an Apple fanboy as anybody, and I had to vote for the DS Lite.
It's just that good.- DRawkus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1The additions to the DS Lite vs. the original DS aren't GOTY material, IMHO.
- rufo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I dunno... I think I might disagree. It's much more comfortable to hold, the screen is much brighter and easier to see in all lighting conditions, and the industrial design of it is just a huge improvement. I think it's very much responsible for the move of the DS from something only the true gamers really wanted to something that was more acceptable to mainstream audiences. It's still not as big in the US as it is in Japan, but I don't think the original DS had anywhere near as much appeal as the DS Lite does.
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0I sold my DS a few days after I finished the new SuperMario Bros.
When Mario2 comes out, I'll buy it again. - aerofan897, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yoshi's Island DS came out today... goodbye life :D
- br0ck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I don't think you'll see it in stores in the US until next Tuesday: http://ds.ign.com/objects/826/826997.html
- jokeyjon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Suprised the Nike+ iPod isn't doing better - I can only guess it's because there aren't that many users. I have a DS Lite and the Nike+ kit and the latter seems a much more worthy winner.
- merdiesel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+19Sony has the nerve to still talk ***** about the DS...
Your little PSP didn't even make the list, it got beat out by a shoe. - linksdeity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+12DS deserves it. I'll admit, even as a huge Nintendo fan, it blew me away.
Sony's last line of deffence against the DS? Blame lackluster sales on there very own consumer base, saying they simply aren't ready for this new "adult" gaming hand held. ROFL
I'm thinking of sending Sony a letter with just three letters written on it.
"WTF" - macbookpromat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I had to vote for the MacBook Pro because I don't have a DS yet. One day I'll be playing on one of those but I need money!
- JohnFrisco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10I haven't owned or played a video game since 1991. Yes, I know I am old. I couldn't resist the DS and Mario and I love it too death! Now I have my eyes on the Wii.
Way to go Nintendo!! - smikelm, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0The competition isn't exactly stiff here.
- DanteDefiance, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I own a PSP and a DS, and I have to say the PSP is a stellar system. People complain that it's too expensive to own...the games, the system, the memory stick. You know what? I own TWO games for the damn thing. I own a ***** load of games for the DS. Why? Simple, the DS ***** rocks. It has all the best PORTABLE games. Nintendo understands we want a system to play on the go.
Sony seems bent on giving us a console experience on a handheld, which is all well and good however they scarified game play for graphics and a ***** multimedia player.
If the portable console battle was any indication, Nintendo is going to ass rape the competition.- vhold, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have both systems too and for me the main thing are the load times. Sitting there, holding a portable system in your hands.. as it loads.. for a minute or so, is just the worst experience ever.
- dinopio, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1DS lite is one device that cought my interest, especially when combined with DS-Xtreme Flash Cart with USB :)
home brew apps are just amazing
check http://forums.ds-xtreme.com/showthread.php?t=341 for big site reviews
The voip and wifi home brew apps just add tons of value to your DS :) (oh look I can use my DS to call people for free) :P - avktm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3i got the ds lite and mbp but i voted for the ds cause its more fun and way more portable
- untested, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Just got a ds two days ago and now I can understand why everyone loves it, nintendo focused on making the games fun above all else instead of worrying about graphics above all else.
Only have the new Super Mario Bros and was wondering what are some of the other good games diggers would recommend, any suggestions?- an0nymous, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Brain age

- wallyson, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@untested
Games I love:
Rocket Slim,
Club House Games,
Magical Starship (if you like RPG)
Final Fantasy III (when it comes out, again if you like RPG)
Elite Beats,
Sonic Rush (fun side scroller)
Mario Kart
Super mario 64 DS (if you never played it or want to play it again)
Metriod Prime Hunters (at first its a little complicated, but you get used to it)
Trauma Center: Under the Knife (Game takes good use of the stylus, kinda slow at times).
I thought highly recomend you hack your DS so that you can play mp3/movies/images/ and store games on it. - av4rice, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Uh, why is the VX Revolution on there instead of the MX Revolution? Looks like the former is the toned-down laptop version according to Logitech's site.
